A Sneak Peek At The Packers

Time: 6:00 p.m. MST

Teams: Green Bay Packers (5-1) at Denver Broncos (3-3)

Location: Invesco Field @ MileHigh - Denver, CO

That's enough celebrating the win over the Steelers.  We have another decent football team coming to town next Monday night and I'm not talking about the Boston Red Sox.  Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers coming to town.  Here are some early Notes and Nuggets --

BRONCOS VS. PACKERS POINTS OF INTEREST

The Broncos own a 5-4-1 all-time regular-season record against the Packers, including a 5-0 mark at home...

Denver also defeated Green Bay 31-24 in Super Bowl XXXII during the 1997 season to capture its first-ever World Championship...

Denver K Jason Elam is the only player from the Broncos who appeared in that game that is expected to play against the Packers on Monday...

The Broncos' 5-0 home record against Green Bay makes the Packers one of four teams the club has never lost to at home in the regular season with the others being Arizona (4-0), Carolina (2-0) and Houston (1-0)...

Green Bay will make its first-ever visit to INVESCO Field at Mile High (opened in 2001) this week, and the Packers join Dallas, Tampa Bay and Minnesota (will play in Denver on Dec. 30) as one of four current teams to have yet to play at the Broncos' current stadium...

Denver is set to appear on Monday Night Football for the 16th consecutive year, marking the longest current streak in the NFL and fifth longest all-time...

The Broncos own a 24-29-1 (.454) record on Monday nights, including a 19-8-1 (.696) mark in those games at home that is the fourth-best in the NFL (min. 10 games), and have won their last two MNF games...

Under Head Coach Mike Shanahan (1995-Pres.), the Broncos are 12-10 on Monday nights (10-3 at home)...

This week's game against the Packers is the first of three Broncos Monday Night Football appearances in 2007, and that total ties with Baltimore for the most in the league in 2007 as well as the most in club history for a season--Denver also appeared on MNF three times during the 1999, '98, '97, '87 and '80 seasons...

Broncos K Jason Elam ranks second in NFL history in field goals made (43) and third in points scored (183) on Monday Night Football and leads all active players in those categories...

Denver is one of three cities (Baltimore and Pittsburgh) that Packers QB Brett Favre has yet to throw a TD pass in during regular season or postseason play--He has played in Denver once (1999)...

Favre's 51.8 career completion percentage in four regular-season games against the Broncos is his lowest among teams he has faced at least three times...

Monday's game marks the second consecutive week that the Broncos' opponent will be coming off its bye week (first such back-to-back stretch for Denver since 1997)...

The Broncos have the NFL's best home record (76-24) since 1995...

Green Bay will be Denver's first NFC opponent of 2007... The Broncos are averaging a club-record 6.02 yards per play and rank fifth in the NFL in total offense (358.3 ypg.)...

Denver's 70.0 (7-of-10) success rate on third downs against Pittsburgh last week was its highest in a game since 10/3/93 vs. Indianapolis (10-of-14 / 71.4%), and the Broncos rank third in the league (50.7%) in third down success this year...

The Broncos lead the NFL in pass defense (164.7 ypg.)...

Denver's defensive line has accounted for four of its nine takeaways this year with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries...

Broncos QB Jay Cutler ranks second in the NFL in both passer rating (116.0) and completion percentage (77.4) on third downs, and he has completed at least 60 percent of his passes in each of Denver's last five games... RB Travis Henry is sixth in the NFL in rushing (549 yds.)...

P Todd Sauerbrun leads the NFL in gross punting average (51.3 yds.) and has recorded a gross average of at least 50 yards and a net average of at least 40 yards in each of Denver's last five games (both are the longest streaks of his career)...

Elam last week against Pittsburgh became one of seven NFL kickers since 1990 to make at least three walk-off field goals in the same year...

DE Elvis Dumervil has recorded three multiple-sack games this year, increasing his career total to five such games, and is tied for sixth in the league in sacks this year...

LB D.J. Williams leads Denver in defensive tackles with 70 (48 solo) while CB Champ Bailey has a club-high five special-teams stops.

Not to be cocky...
This is not so much about how awesome the Broncos are, but more about the roll the Packers HAD been on. I think the shine has begun to come off the Packers a little bit. I'm glad they didn't have this game scheduled a couple weeks ago. Now, I think the Broncos can get it done. The Packers' run game is pretty sketchy at best and Favre has begun to cool off. Their defense is for real, but after the Broncos' showing against Pitt, I feel fairly confident.

Please, please, please go with the BLUE PANTS again, though!!!!

I share that confidence.
And what's the story about UFA Michael Turner I read about in your sigs?

I've been meaning to ask.

Michael Turner
LT's backup for the Chargers is an Unrestricted Free Agent this coming off-season. I've always been impressed with his combination of speed and power and just think he would be ideal in our offense. Plus, he's a quality person (unlike our boy, Henry) having sat contentedly behind LT without griping or complaining and he's also low-mileage. I just think the Broncos should make a serious run at him this off-season.

Not sure
He's definitely downhill, though. He doesn't mess around going east-west and dancing and all that. He gets going forward and goes.

A quick look...
It looks to be strength vs. strength in this game, the arm of Favre vs. the #1 pass defense in the league.  Or weakness vs. weakness, as the worst running game goes up against the worst rush defense.

I like the Broncos there.  The Packers lack a feature running back, and the Broncos run D was much improved against a tough back in Parker.  I see them keeping the running game in check.  I'd love to see them put the same kind of pressure on Favre that they hounded Ben R. with, and hopefully get him to force some bad passes.

I think you summed it just right.
You hit the nail on the head.  I took a few hundred words in my story (posted under "What to watch for against GB on MNF) to say what you did in just a few sentences.

We'll see how it ends up, but I agree that the strength against strength and weakness against weakness is the way to break it down.

Good call bro.
