Grady Jackson

Just read that Atlanta released starting their DT, 350 lb Grady Jackson. Obviously, he's not going to be a long term solution, but this guy could be a godsend for the Broncos run defense for the rest of this season: a big, veteran run-stopper. This would basically be adding another Sam Adams to the lineup.

Any other thoughts on this?

I won't go down the retread discussion line, but I will note that Bates and Shanny seem ready to give Thomas a long, hard look.  They probably feel like they have depth at the position, with contracts hanging over their heads to not cut guys like gordon and burton.  Not to mention that Ekuban will have a shot to make the team next year as well.  Jackson might be too little, too late.

Too little?
Grady Jackson might be too late, but at 350 lbs. he is definitely not too little!

Another question is..
was Jackson a cancer in the locker room?  After having a cancer in Simeon Rice, why add to the problem with another?

by mdierk on Oct 24, 2007 9:24 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Good question
That is definitely a valid concern. The article I read made it sound like he had issues with the front office. He had filed a lawsuit against the Falcons for releasing some information from his medical records that he claimed had damaged him in free agency. So, I don't think he'd have an issue with the Broncos' front office. As far as locker room stuff? I really couldn't tell you.

Simeon Rice...
I don't think this guy is a cancer.  He might have made a mistake voicing his frustrations publicly, but it sounded to me like all the guy wants is to play and HELP the team.

I hope he starts next week so he can back up his talk.  He used to be one of the most dominant players at his position, so I say we got to give him a chance to succeed here.  He's been hurt, but is getting healed and let's find out how good he really is before we lay judgement down upon him.

The media of course has blown this situation out of hand.  No doubt the coaches and Simeon are all on the same page now and I doubt he is causing problems in the locker room.

And didn't those comments...
come during the week after the worst home defeat we've suffered in 40 years?  Of course we are going to have some pissed off players, especially the ones who felt they were good to go but were benched and forced to watch his teammates get their asses whooped.  I'd be pretty peeved too..

It sounds like I'm less forgiving than you are.
I know we disagreed on Marshall too.  But with Rice my problem isn't so much talking outside of the locker room.

Sure, talking outside of the locker room by promoting yourself and putting down your team mates isn't cool.  But my gripe with Rice runs deeper.  As a military veteran I had a real tough time swallowing the comment Rice made about a very brave ARZ Cardinal that gave up millions to serve his country and died for it.  Rice's explanation made things worse.

Because of that episode Rice starts with 3 strikes and 3 outs in my book.  He needs to play stellar football and keep his mouth shut for me to give him much credit.

Dude, you and I would make an excellent good cop / bad cop routine!  We should get together and go to cop school.  LOL

That's the thing...
It's not like he was stinking up the place. It sounds like he just had a pretty sharp disagreement with management over the whole medical records thing. Jackson, in rotation with or next to Adams would be a plus. He's a perfect fit for Bates' system, willing to be fairly unnoticed clogging up the middle.

Just say no.
Apparently, any guy who is about 340+ is a perfect guy for this system. BAAAAAAAAAHHHHH

wow.
I'm underwhelmed, dude. Let's see your arguments:
  1. Add sucks to the title.
  2. RRREEETTTRRREEAAADD.
Brilliant. Got any more? How about an answer to this?
  1. He led the league in tackles for loss last year.
  2. In his 3 seasons with the Packers, his best one by far was his 3rd, 2005, the year he played for Jim Bates.
Maybe you could have your Daddy log in with you next time and have him help you post something intelligible. Now run along, junior.

Well,
I am. Lets use some logic here. If he got cut by the Falcons...

I addmmitt sucks wasn't the right way to go, but he doesn't really fit this team. There is no need to bring in older d-lineman when you spent most of the draft on them.

By the way, my dad has been dead for 7 years. Thanks.

And
as I hit post, I realized you would probably want to know how he died. A common way. Car crash. Drunk truck driver at 65 t-boned him. Lost 80 percent of his blood. Real nice, huh?

So what you're saying is...
You haven't really read others' posts here or figured out exactly who Jackson is?

Your "logic" makes no sense:

  1. He was cut by the Falcons in what is widely regarded as a big surprise given he was starting and playing well, even having racked up a sack. Turns out it didn't really have anything to do with his play, but rather a squabble with management.
  2. He doesn't really fit this team. You mean the team with the D-coord. that he had one of his best years playing under? The team that plays the system of defense he's best suited for?
  3. And there's no need to bring in older d-linemen when you spent most of the draft on them. Again, I hate to rehash this, but since you're not reading what others are saying... he's clearly not a long term solution, but is Amon Gordon? Or Antwon Burton? Or Alvin McKinley? But, giving the guy a one year flier makes sense. I don't see this team as ready to throw in the towel on this season and play only for the future. Jackson already knows the system and would provide more of the beef that Bates likes up front.

Open up the tunnel vision.
He doesn't fit if he gipes. He also stunts the growth of our young d-lineman. Yea, he's a stop-gap. He was good 2 years ago. It's what have you done lately, how you stack up and your attitude. He doesn't stack up very good with the rest of our team and apparently neither does his attitude. Keep him away.

If you still want to flame me for planning for the future instead of a playoff loss and for wanting to build through the draft instead of signing aging vets that will not help us at all, then head on over to my diary.

Ok
I have 1 word to add to your title:

Grady Jackson sucks.

Look at our roster
We're not dying for tackles at DT, but Sam Adams is on track to tally 8 for the year (he has 3 so far).

No other DT has more than 9.

Grady Jackson has 19.  Leads the league, again, in tackles for loss.

Looking at our roster now, I would say he is an immediate upgrade over everyone but Marcus Thomas.  Better than Adams.  Better than Gordon, Burton.  McKinley looked great last week, but I'd still say he's better than him.  He may be old, but he's still productive, and I'd love to see him in orange and blue.

BTW, the community you've got here TSG is outstanding - keep up the good work.
