My Post of the Week
As I've told the Guru, I've had a hectic couple of weeks and haven't been on as much but things will settle down on Monday and I'll be back at it but as that's three days from now, I just wanted to get my thoughts out while they're fresh. Please don't take what I say in a wrong or "negative way". I'm playing both sides of the fence even though I'm still vocal about preparing for next year and keeping the young guys in along with protecting Cutler and Bailey.
First off, the Titans game was one I think can be a little misleading as if Roydell Williams could catch a pass, or if Brandon Jones could, that game would have been totally different. Now, I haven't been able to read through the comments but, I'm sure that some of you are bouncing off of the walls in glee that we're tied for the division lead and that we'd be in the playoffs. Let me put some facts into your head for both sides of the fence. First the positive/good guy ones.
Hey, we're in first place. WOOOOOO!!!
Our young qb looks like a very capable quarterback.
Our running game has mad some strides with new players.
We've seen the emergence of 2 wr's behind Walker.
And, we have the best fire drill kicker in the league.
Now for the other side
Look where the TEXANS would be in our division and their's is far superior.
We have been riddled by injuies to the guys who are key components to this team in Bailey and Cutler.
Our number one receiver can't get healthy.
Our top two running backs are ailing.
Bailey is playing hurt and the initial defensive plan has been chucked out the window.
We have struggled and I stress struggled to our record.
Now I'm not counting the playing of guys like Hamz or Thomas or Crowder because they haven't had consistent playing time. Granted, we all get high on the highs and low on the lows, but I'm worried about the future instead. To me, our goal should be to protect our guys and let next year's important guys who are not this year(so far) in Thomas and Hamz and whoever else it may be take on those key situations.
This brings me to something I'm sure you all find touchy and that's the retiring of our older guys. I will put money in the bank on it now. JOHN LYNCH, TOM NALEN, AND ROD SMITH WILL NOT BE DENVER BRONCOS NEXT YEAR If they are, I will be utterly dissapointed with Shanahan. I like players, but loyalty stops when a guy can't get on the field and isn't helping his team. Look at our man Brett Favre. He's chucking and chucking. Now he is stunting they're qb postition growth giving the Pack only a couple years if that for him to take them all the way, but he's performing at a high level still and he takes losing the hardest of anyone in the league. When we lose we hear the some old crap over and over. The guys I mentioned above will not be the best on our team next year and it's time for Shanny to take that into his hands and work that out with them.
I have to address our crackpot rb and the mini me guy who is his back-up. Henry should not be a Denver Bronco next year. It's simple. You broke the rules, we were your 3rd shot. You're done. Young is going to need a compliment. I don't see him having the size to take a pounding. I love him as a Tatum Bell guy with more ability but we need a Mike Anderson to be the goalline and tough yards guy. As some have said, we can not invest these huge contracts in guys that have a troubled past. Look at what the Pats do. The sign a guy to a 1 or 2 year deal, let him explode and get his money but they DON'T resign him because they know he will explode again. I doubt Randy Moss will forever be a Pat because of money, so don't start with that stuff.(16 td's. Are you kidding me?).
What I'm trying to get at here is that although we have positives and I guess you could say we are growing, we have nagging things now that will pose as large problems in the next 2-3 years as the older guys fade out on the lines and secondaries. We will not be able to keep Foxy. It's time to make those tough decisions now about who you do/don't want or we'll falter and Cutler will have a career like a certain Dolphins quarterback.
HT does a great job with the articles he does, but I pose 1 question to you guys. Lets say we keep this trend going and Lynch n crew stay around for 2 more years, where will we be at then? Bailey and Bly are the best tandem out there, but they way some of you are talking, they're going to be playing at this level in 8 or 9 years when we "actually get going". They won't be. You guys want to live and die every year. I don't. It's time to plan now to get a run with an extremely good team in a few years rather than try to be mediocre and get hot.
I do agree that the Bears are going to give us problems, and I'm going to favor the Broncos by only 3 points, but before I end my rant, I am going to pose the questions that I want everyone to answer, but you're answers must be as one and can't contradict.
If Cutler gets hurt, who will carry us?
If Bailey gets hurt, who will carry us?
If Bailey and Cuter get hurt, who will carry us?
Elam is not a possibility. You guys should recognize my point. We have no other dominant forces on this football team right now and we need to work at those areas.

Welcome back dude!
If Cutler gets hurt, who will carry us?
If Bailey gets hurt, who will carry us?
If Bailey and Cuter get hurt, who will carry us?
This is somewhat of a false dichotomy, which is where we are given two false options to choose from when a third, viable, option exists.
First off, the question implies two things:
- The first implication is that Cutler and Bailey are, or will be, carrying us.
- The second implication is that we need carrying.
- Cutler is no doubt having a tremendous year in what is effectively his rookie campaign. He is a bit tit-for-tat with his INTs and TDs, but it is better than any of us really expected (except Guru and his 2-1 lock for Cutler. BTW, when are you going to update us again on your locks Guru? Dude only has so much room in his sig, after all) and a case could be made for the strides he is making right now, I believe 2 full games with no INTs, and a third where he was off to a great start before getting whacked in his leg. But I would argue that he is in no way carrying the team. The last second wins in BUF and OAK could be attributed to Elam, but I think they are more appropriately given to Cutler and Walker, who were huge on those final drives, and even Shanahan who started a trend in the NFL with his "icing-the-kicker" TO. But even with giving credit to Cutler for the wins, he also made mistakes in those games that made them closer than they needed to be. And you could even point out here that Walker may have been on your list with Cutler and Bailey had he not been injured, which just adds more credence to the idea that we don't really have anyone carrying the whole team, as he has been out for a while now, and our passing game hardly seems to have suffered at all. Cutler, in fact, seems to have gotten better in Javon's absence. That part is just my opinion though. Moving on to Bailey. Even though his stats aren't as gaudy as last year, there is no doubt he is still elite. More than anything, I have noticed that he is more frustrated this year, but I don't know if the extra (even for Champ) cushion he is giving up is a result of being slowed by his quad, part of playing a safety-like role in this scheme, or just Bailey trying to adjust to his frustration by giving himself more room to work. Regardless, I would argue that it is actually Bly who has been our most productive DB this year, followed by Foxy who has been seeing a ton of action from his nickel/safety vantage point and has been very solid, even filling in for Champ with no noticeable drop-off. Having said that, Champ has had some stunning second halves, absolutely shutting down his side of the field, especially the GB game. Regardless, his inconsistency this year has been part of what is plaguing the Broncos, and thus I would say he is not carrying the team. But I think you are also indicating that even if they aren't carrying us now, they could carry us at some point in the future. This is a classic rephrasing of a common (albeit silly) philosphical quandary: "Do the ends justify the means." This question gives people headaches, and again it is because of the notion of a false-dichotomy. In reality, the question is meaningless. For the philosophical question, the answer is that: the ends are the means. Or more specifically, that means are the ends in progress. Like the mind-body split, you simply can't divide the two ideas and then pit them against eachother and declare a winner. They are the same thing. (I would love to discuss this more, but this is hardly the place). In regards to the question of Cutler and Champ carrying us at some point in the future, the answer is that: whether now or later, if they can carry this team, than they should carry this team. They can't split their ability to carry the team from when they choose to do it. If they can, they must. (One could also argue that Cutler can't carry them now but could in the future, purely from the point of view of ability, but that merely supports him staying in and growing, or he will never get there.
- The other implication of the question is that the team requires carrying by someone. All I can think of when I consider this, is Elway losing three superbowls. Not the Broncos losing three superbowls, but Elway. He truly carried those past teams. He made up for his and everyone elses mistakes in those seasons, and truly made everyone else play better. But when the Superbowl victories finally came, and we had a team that could truly dominate an opponent, it was just that: A Team. Sure, we had stars at all the key positions, but we also had a somewhat unheralded defense, solid STs, and a fantabulous coaching staff. One or two guys can't carry a team in the AFC anymore, but in order to avoid a contradiction (you did after all, demand no contradictions) I will let point 1 do most of the talking, and merely say that if anyone is responsible for carrying this team, whether now or in the forseeable future, that that person is Shanahan. He is part of every aspect of this team, he is involved in his players and how and when they play, it will be Shanahan evaluating and starting the guy who goes in if Cutler or Champ gets hurt, and he is also the Bronco least likely to be injured, which is sort of the crux of this whole argument.

carry me was the wrong term
Right.
You say "JOHN LYNCH, TOM NALEN, AND ROD SMITH WILL NOT BE DENVER BRONCOS NEXT YEAR. If they are, I will be utterly dissapointed with Shanahan."
There is a huge difference between saying they "won't be" here next year and saying "they shouldn't" be here next year. By following the comment with an indication of your moral appraisal (dissapointment), I would guess that you believe both, that they shouldn't and won't be here.
I think Rod is a case of won't more than shouldn't from my opinion, because if he was willing to accept a role as depth behind 3 and maybe even four guys (martinez could get hurt returning punts, especially with the all-out way he runs, so depth would be nice) I think that would be huge. It is predicated on his health, which is why I agree that he WON'T be here next year (as a player). But if he is healthy I say he SHOULD be here.
I have mixed feelings on Nalen. On the one hand he is one of the best centers to ever play the game. On the other hand, the next center who is going to be one of the best ever won't get on the field as long as Nalen is hanging tough. I lean towards hoping Nalen retires, in that I think between hamilton's past work and Myer's current stand-out effort, the drop off wouldn't be severe, and the next generation can capitalize on the growth they are getting right now. So Nalen probably WON'T be here, and I don't think he SHOULD be here next year.
Lynch has me in a real mess. I actually was angry at him when he went out of the TEN game. That is totally unreasonable, I know, but I couldn't help it. I thought to myself that he should be taking better care of himself if he is going to go around being such a huge part of this defense. I suppose that is my answer right there. I'm getting upset when the local geriatric (who is having another great year, and seems to be a major energy-LYNCH-pin for the play of the Defense) tumbles out of his wheelchair. I think Lynch rocks, and if he does one thing this year, I hope that it will be that he brings more brain than brawn to the final games of the season, stays healthy for his and his family's sake, and that he seriously contemplate retiring and announcing it while Denver has plenty of time to craft a suitable warroom strategy. If Denver is committed to a starting safety in the draft, I wouldn't be surprised if they have to make trades to get the guy they want. So Lynch probably WILL be back, but I think he SHOULDN'T push too hard at this point. I would love to see him as an assistant coach someday, just like Rod, but Alas, he dreams of the silverish screen...

Here comes the Hoosierteacher!
I also tip my hat to Styg50 for his counter. Solid job to both of you. But guys, you know I couldn't read this article without jumping in, especially if I get a mention in it! lol
So here's what I'm going to do. Because the diary is long (in a good way) and makes so many point I'm going to write a contradicting diary. I'm shooting for it to be done later this afternoon or (more likely) this evening. I can't fit all of my comments in a "comment section".
Again, while I don't fully agree with the diary, Dude does an excellent job making some points and putting together a solid storyline that we should all take seriously. Great job Dude, and I for one am thrilled to know we'll be reading more of your stuff now that you're freed up.
