Value for draft picks

How would it benefit the Broncos to move down in the draft?  If the players they are targeting in the first round are not available, they might get more value for their pick by trading their 1st rounder for 2nd &/or 3rd round picks.  The Broncos have had more success with player development when they have moved around to target specific players in the 1st round such as Moss, Cutler, and D.J. Williams than when they took the best player available (BPA) at a position of need (Nash, Middlebrooks, Lelie, Foster).

2nd round players are usually just as athletically capable as mid to late 1st  rounders, they might have dropped due to more questions or playing a position that doesn't have a lot of immediate need for most teams or they have specialized skills that need to be mated up with the right system or salary cap structure.

The positions that Denver needs to get immediate upgrades at via the draft, LB, DT and Safety, in my opinion, usually have a lot of good value in rounds other than the 1st round.  For the last 5-6 years, there have been many reaches on DTs (Ryan Sims, Jonathan Sullivan, Ryan Pickett, etc.) due to team needs and the annual shortages of big bodies.  Most of the big DTs are difficult to evaluate for several reasons such as: needing more time to grow into their bodies, more time to develop stamina and the difficulty in determining the legitimate need for resting their big bodies versus lack of desire.  There were no reaches on DTs during last years 1st round.  Usually only 3 to 5 LBs are taken in the first round and since the Broncos won't be competing with teams that use 3-4 defenses for big LBs their chances of getting value in the 2nd round for fast run-containment-system LBs are high.  It is rare to see more than 2 safeties drafted in the 1st round, so the chance to get good value in the subsequent rounds is usually not a problem for this position.

The Draft Trade Value Chart from the Great Blue North Draft Report site, http://www.gbnreport.com/index.htm, gives approximate numerical values of picks.  Sorry that the chart has some html conversion glitches, for easier viewing check out the GBN site.  Keep in mind that this is just a generalization of value, any item's price is ultimately determined by what the individual seller and buyer agree on.  An example of that is Denver trading a 2008 3rd round pick to Minnesota for their 2007 4th round pick.  That was done to get Marcus Thomas and looks like it was a productive trade.

If Denver finishes in the 17 to 21 range, their pick will have a value of 950 to 800 points.  Miami's 2nd and their other 2nd (from San Diego for Chris Chambers) have values of 580 and approximately 420 to 360, based on San Diego finishing within an overall range of 17th to 22nd.  The total value of 780 could be spiced up with a late round pick or two.  Miami is desperate for immediate help and could probably get better results with another 1st round pick rather than two 2nd rounders and a couple of late rounders.  Having three 2nd rounders could bring some really quick talent upgrades to the defense.

What if San Francisco wants to make up for the disastrous trade of their 1st rounder to New England and wants to get value from the pick they got from Indianapolis?  The Indy pick will be in the 27 to 31 range (600 to 680), add the SF 3rd rounder at about 245 for a total value of 845 to 925 and you have a deal!  A late 1st and an early 3rd might be good fits for the positions of need for Denver and would really create some exciting options.

What are your ideas for the draft, what are your recommendations?

I wish...
No one would give up two 2nd round picks for a low 1st round pick. The value just isn't there. A player picked 20th is just as likely to be a bust as a player picked 35th or 45th. A team such as Miami would do much better with a couple of 2nd round players to go along with the numbre 1 pick in the draft.

The only time it makes sense to make moves like what you describe is for early picks where the player is seen as high impact. Or when a team really really likes a particular player that might not last untill they have a chance to get him in the 2nd round.

Miami might give up a 2nd this year and a 2nd next year for a 1st round pick like ours would be, but only if there is someone they really like.

Orange County is hot. Really! Haven't you seen the weather report?

Losing teams
might have immediate needs and openings for 1st round picks.  If I was the GM for Miami, NYJ, SL and a few others I would be looking for immediate talent upgrades and I would be glad to have two 1st round picks.

Bustability of 2nd round picks equal to that of 1st rounders?  Sounds like a good research topic, maybe later this winter I will work at it.

Naturally the salary cap would be a factor, but I don't have any information on salary caps nor do I understand the nuances of salary cap economics.

I will add
that Miami has almost NO talent on their team, and will probably be looking to stockpile picks in every round, as per their Chambers trade.  But that is totally an outsider's view of the Dolphins.  For all I know they might have a ton of young guys rarin' to go, and just feel the need for some key additions.

My feelings are that we have 8 picks spread around in the draft and we should probably take a shot on a player with each one.  But that is a very conservative outlook, and the Broncos have been anything but conservative in their past two successful drafts.

Our most pressing need is DT but I agree with you that we would be better off looking in the fourth round or so for our DT (and OT while we're at it.  Maybe someone will slip here)  Therefore I think we might look at trading up in either the first or second round.  A dream trade gets us up above 9th (maybe a trade with CIN?) where Laurinatis might be available, and a good trade gets us up to 12 or better where we can get Dan Conner (MIN trade maybe?).  I think we get a safety in the final rds or as a CFA, and wait til next year when the pool will be much richer (Mays, Harris, etc.) with true SS from bigtime programs.  Or we could probably get Keith Rivers where we will be picking, though it might be too high (but if he is who we want then we should just take him).

How about this:  Trade our 1st(900+ points)from this year and our 3rd next year to move up about four spots or so to 12 or 11 and take Dan Conner.  Then trade our second and one of our 4th rd picks to move up to the front of rd two and take Keith Rivers.  That would be a MLB and an OLB, so we would have options with DJ, but one of them wouldn't have to start right away.  Then take DT or OL with the other fourth and spend the rest shoring those picks up.  We really need another solid DT, but I agree that we can draft them late and expect them to make an impact in 09.

Is it too early to be having this much fun with mock drafts?

Or....
Trade Javon Walker for a 4th rd pick this year and a fifth the next.  (Or just a fourth, but I think we could convince someone to overpay.)  This hinges of course on extending Stokely's contract, maybe for like 3yrs.  Now we have another 4th round pick to go after a OL AND a DT.

Or am I getting greedy?...

The draft
First, I like a point that Sundquist made.  There are more UFA players out of college with active time in the NFL than 5, 6, or 7th rounders.

So let's always bundle those picks and trade them to teams with GMs not as smart at Sundquist.  : )

One idea would be this year's 5,6,7 for next year's 4.

Also, I still want to keep Walker.  He's a little banged up, but he was great last year.  Let's see if he comes back when healthy.

I think my motto will be:  If you trade down - don't go below a fourth round.  No matter what you do, don't get left with any 5,6,7s.  Anything worth a 5,6,7 can be found (and cheaper) UFA.
