Chiefs @ Broncos - Game Day Open Thread - 2nd Quarter

     @

Date: Sunday, December 9, 2007

Time: 2:05 p.m. MST

Teams: Kansas City Chiefs (4-8, 4th in AFC West) at Denver Broncos (5-7, 2nd Place in AFC West)

Location: Invesco Field @ Mile High - Denver, CO

Chiefs Fourth Drive -

--More sweet goodness from Hamza, playing Bowe perfectly...
--Nate Webster, playing perfect gap defense, stuffs something called a Gilbert Harris on the running play...
--3rd and 5, there's a flag. The Broncos are off-sides again, and it's Doom. The Broncos need to do something about all of these offsides penalties. Two of them give the Chiefs their first first down of the game.
--Gilbert Harris runs softly on 2nd and 1 and Webster makes the stop again for no-gain..
--3rd and one, the Chiefs run it again and the Broncos stuff it again. This time it is Bailey making the stop...
--4th and less than 1....Chiefs run and pick up the first...
--Easily the best game the Broncos linebackers have played this year. They are not missing their assignment and not over-playing in pursuit...
--IAN GOLD WITH THE SACK. Drilling Croyle, along with Dumervil
--Third and long sees a reception to Tony Gonzalez leaves a 4th and 2...
--Chiefs go for it again...run, and get it...The Broncos had it stuffed but D.J. Williams could not get Kolby Smith down...
--Very close to a fumble, Dwayne Bowe had it but couldn't hang on...
--Drive approaching 7 minutes....and the Chiefs pick up a Delay of Game penalty, bringing up 2nd and 15...
--A 3rd and 6 upcoming, and Croyle gets sacked again, and Dumervil breaks his sack drought. His 9th on the season, and the Chiefs will have to go for it again...
--On 4th and 13 the Broncos sit back and let Brodie Croyle sit back there all day. First Down Chiefs. Bad Play Broncos...
--False Start will back the Chiefs up again...
--The Chiefs are 3/3 on 4th down on this drive..
--Horrible tackling, first by Dre Bly, then by the rest of the Broncos defense, allows Tony Gonzalez to walk into the endzone...Touchdown Chiefs....BRONCOS 14 - Chiefs 7

Broncos Fifth Drive --

The Chiefs hold the ball for nearly 9 minutes and cut the Broncos lead in half. Can the Broncos offense find it's rhythm??
--Broncos will start near the 30, looking to get their mojo back...
--Daniel Graham having a huge day and the Broncos are to mid-field.
--The 9-minute drive has taken the oomph out of the crowd, that's for sure...
--Selvin Young has the Broncos down to the 30, and just like that the Broncos are back in scoring position...
--Young already over 100 yards, now at 113 for the day...
--Tony Scheffler runs alot like a receiver. He lines up out there, catches teh quick pass and runs for another Broncos first down...
--TWO-MINUTE WARNING -- BRONCOS 14 - CHIEFS 7
--THOUCHDOWN BRONCOS!!! Brandon Marshall is wide-open for the score...Then the worst officiating crew in football calls Marshall for a 15-yard penalty for throwing snow in the air. Guys, get a life!!! BRONCOS 21 - Chiefs 7

Chiefs Fifth Drive --

--The penalty helps the Chiefs get out to mid-field...
--Chiefs run the ball and bust inside Broncos territory...
--No-huddle for the Chiefs, and quickly the Chiefs are looking at 3rd and long...
--Just like that the Chiefs go three and out. The Broncos will have 1:18 and all three timeouts to try and extend the lead...

Broncos Sixth Drive --

--Starting at their own 16, the Broncos run it to Selvin Young and he switches fields and get the ball all the way down to mid-field. Selvin young is a playa. Timeout Denver...
--Brandon Marshall on the pitch this time, and he gains 12 yards. Timeout Denver...
--Scheffler with the catch. He stay in bounds, however, and the clock continues to move...
--Marshall this time, then again. The Broncos just do get a timeout, with 1 second to go, and the Broncos have a chance to extend the lead...
--The final play of the first half is a Jason Elam field goal...Solid first half by the Broncos....

END OF FIRST HALF - BRONCOS 24 - Chiefs 7

We have to get
better at stringing things together, like plays, first downs, wins, etc.

Denver penalty
shortens the initial 1 and 10 to a 1 and 5 situation.

by Silverblood on Dec 9, 2007 2:51 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Another penalty
this one on Dumervil, gives the Chiefs a first down. No, do not do that.

by Silverblood on Dec 9, 2007 2:53 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, doom
don't doom us doom, it will be our doom.

We're doomed to mediocrity.  KC gets a their first first down right from us.

by Jeremy Bolander on Dec 9, 2007 2:54 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Somewhat OT:
Sportscenter just got their highlight. Brady threw a 63-yard TD pass to Moss, and the Patriots are leading 14-3.

by Silverblood on Dec 9, 2007 2:55 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Sounds like DJ
is getting MLB down.  That was fundamental and solid play right there.

That's right, D
Make 'em go backwards.

Followed by Gold
coming with speed from the outside.

Who do they think they are kidding?

Me of course...

by Jeremy Bolander on Dec 9, 2007 2:58 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Ahhh
I hate that O-line help crap...

by Jeremy Bolander on Dec 9, 2007 2:59 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Webster continues to improve
...and leads Denver in tackles (again).  Gold is also making some plays, trying to make up for weakness earlier this season.  Is it too little too late for Webster?

Too little too late
to salvage himself in Denver.  He will earn a chance to get beat out by a FA or first year guy in training camp.  At best he earns a trade for a low draft pick.

At worst he plays for MIA next year...

by Jeremy Bolander on Dec 9, 2007 3:01 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

The chiefs
should not be able to convert 4th down against us.

They have way to many problems right now.

by Jeremy Bolander on Dec 9, 2007 3:00 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

It WAS only two yards.
With that penalty though they might have taken themsleves out of FG range.  dummies!

2 and 15
Stop them, guys. Can't be too hard, right...?

by Silverblood on Dec 9, 2007 3:01 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

That is better doom.
Here's hoping you get double digits this year!!

*clink*

by Jeremy Bolander on Dec 9, 2007 3:02 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Back in FG range.
And I agree.  Webster goes.  I don't expect him in training camp next year.  If he is (somehow) he won't be a starter.

gaaah....
what kind of a completion was that?

by Jeremy Bolander on Dec 9, 2007 3:03 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

4th downs
How many times you going to let them convert on 4th down? the first two I can understand, but not on 4th and 12.

by dpurvis on Dec 9, 2007 3:03 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

WHAT?
Come on now, allowing a 22-yard pass to them when you'd just pushed them possibly out of FG range? Bad.

by Silverblood on Dec 9, 2007 3:03 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Was
that Bowe completion stoppable by a set of good safeties?  Did we give them that or did they outplay us for it?

by Jeremy Bolander on Dec 9, 2007 3:04 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Bah, 4th and long and the Chiefs make it.
OK, the Chiefs move themselves back with a penalty.

That was embarrassing
Chiefs TD... crap. Ever hear of stopping 4th down conversions, guys?

by Silverblood on Dec 9, 2007 3:04 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

9 minute drive
Now the offense needs to respond with a long drive of their own, give that defense a breather.

by dpurvis on Dec 9, 2007 3:04 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Does our defense
have any character?

We will find out.  They have no reason to care what KC does here except as a matter of pride, so...

Let's see what you got boys.

by Jeremy Bolander on Dec 9, 2007 3:05 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Styg
I think Lynch is in.  We really need a second coverage guy to split that endzone in two.  Hamza can't do it all, especialy with a (slow) Lynch up in the box.

Somebody tell Champ
that Croyle is looking at Gonzalez on every play.

We should be able to make that work for us and put KC out of its misery.

KC is only making it worse for both of us...

PITT closes the gap with NE.
PITT has 10, NE 14.

Roethlisberger
decided to show that he too could do long passes... threw a 32-yarder.

by Silverblood on Dec 9, 2007 3:09 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Worthlessburger
is playing second best QB to Brady this year.  He really ahs a handle on that offense they run in PIT

by Jeremy Bolander on Dec 9, 2007 3:11 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm
A halfway decent kick return by Martinez. Come on, offense, let the D have a breather...

by Silverblood on Dec 9, 2007 3:08 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Is Bailey on Gonzales?
If not the coaches need to put him there.  Paymah can cover at WR.

Another point for the need of a coverage safety.  Hamza could zone deep when Bailey covers a Gates or a Gonzales.  The other safety could double with Paymah.  Lynch can't cover anyone in pass at this point.

Gamecast says Marshall passed to Graham!?!?!
...for 25 yards?!?!?!?

That's my man Graham again.  And Marshall with the arm?

I hope I get to see that on film somewhere!  Marshall to Graham!  WOW!!!!

The running game
is really working with Young today. Which is nice to see...

by Silverblood on Dec 9, 2007 3:12 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

And Marshall does it again!
Now Jay has to learn how to play WR to keep up with him...

by Silverblood on Dec 9, 2007 3:12 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Or not
Now Gamecast is saying the 25-yarder was, in fact, by Cutler.

by Silverblood on Dec 9, 2007 3:14 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Young is ripping them to shreds.
It's a little early to talk about a PITT-like run for sixth seed and a superbowl, so I won't go there.  It WOULD be nice to finish strong so we can be excited about next year.

MARSHALL PASSES to SCHEFF!
This is crazy!  We have become the Harlem Globetrotters of football!  Sounds like they are playing some nice finesse ball out there.

Wish I could see it!

Gamecast can't make up its mind
Now it's saying those were by Cutler. I'm hoping not, because it would be great to have Marshall with that tool to line up as a QB...

by Silverblood on Dec 9, 2007 3:15 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

There wasn't
any Marshall-Pass in this game so far...

by DjBroncos on Dec 9, 2007 3:15 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

now gameday
says Cutler made the passes....whoever is watching, what happened?

by Donkey on Dec 9, 2007 3:16 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Dumb ass gamecast!
I had a sinking feeling that gamecast blew it again.  This happens every week.

Still, Cutler continues to look good and is in no danger of losing his job to a receiver.  The TEs are playing great catch and run too.

But that wasn't what you were asking, methinks...

Did we get a penalty for someone throwing snow?
I can't trust gamecast, but it hasn't mentioned the penalty yet.  Anyone?
