SBNation Mock Draft Pick #86 -- Denver Broncos
With the 86th pick in the 2007 SBNation Mock NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select....

John Wendling, Safety (Wyoming)
This was easily the toughest selection yet. The Broncos probably could use some depth on the O-Line, or Wide Receiver, or Linebacker, in my mind, and I can understand those who don't agree, Safety is a huge need on this defense. John Lynch isn't getting any younger, and there are huge questions about Nick Ferguson and Sam Brandon, each trying to come back off of knee surgery. Hamza Abdullah has promise, but can't be considered a sure thing. The Broncos need to add some depth at Safety, and while it is a bit of a risk taking Wendling here I believe he has the tools physically, and more importantly, mentally to become a solid Pro.
For me it came down to Wendling and Josh Gattis. After looking at both of them there is just something about Gattis that rubs me the wrong way. I can't pin-point it, but for some reason I just don't think he'll translate well to the next level.
Wendling is bigger, faster, and the topper for me, very intelligent. I will probably get flamed for it, but when I see Wendling I think of John Lynch, another guy that was too slow, too big, not instinctive. What Lynch did have, however, was intelligence and alot of it. He also loved to hit people, something Wendling loves to do as well. Wendling is smart enough to read offenses, and like Lynch will overcome his physical limitations by putting himself and his teammates in the right places to make plays. How often have we seen Lynch shoot a gap and make a play in the backfield? That's knowing where to be and when to be there. I think Wendling can bring that.
What clinched it for me was an interview I heard with Wendling on NFL Radio last week. He was very impressive to listen to. He had offers to play at other schools but decided on Wyoming because of academics, and to be close to home. I repsect guys who sacrifice something for their beliefs.
That's my take. Go ahead and fire away. This one I will take the heat for on my own!

I can't complain
Not sure who here has already seen this Wendling video, but it's pretty amazing.

Because I have to be honest...
An average safety will have a hard time making this team. Lynch is a lock, Brandon and Ferguson should bounce back from what has become routine surgeries (though I could see a situation where Ferguson is let go), Abdullah is a favorite of the staff, and Curome Cox is needed for his cover skills.
For a safety to make the team, he has to exhibit a skill that is unique to the safeties on the roster. It would be nice if that unique skill is deep coverage.
Sadly, Wendling lacks the most in this department. He was moved off of free safety last year because he was deemed a better run defender than in coverage, for Wyoming's standards. He makes tackles, but as has been noted, he isn't a hitter, but a drag down type. Most scouts also don't believe he plays to his timed speed.
I'll give him pluses for instincts and mentality, but he doesn't bring anything unique to the table, and won't solve the biggest deficiency, which is coverage in the deep half. He probably could handle special teams, earning him a job, but he'll only be an average pro, and the type of player teams are always looking to upgrade. I don't see where Wendling upgrades the defense now, or later for that matter.
If the biggest issue is depth behind those returning from injuries, similar safeties abound in rounds six through seven, namely Harrison of Stanford, who is a good athlete in his own right and a much better hitter.
Michael Johnson of Arizona is a known centerfield type that might have been able to push Ferguson and Brandon early, and could be a third down safety. Coe of Arkansas State is more of a fourth rounder, but could be of similar value.
As I've stated before, safety depth isn't necessarily the issue here, and just an average safety may struggle to make this roster. Wendling may have the instincts to get past this, but he doesn't figure to help now, or a great deal much later...
Since you were bracing for it, I had to do it...

It's cool...
If anyone can teach a guy like Wendling how to play with that kind of toolset it is Lynch. Someone in this draft is going to surprise some poeple, I took a chance that JW will do it...

re: unique skill
Just kidding. I agree with your analysis of the Broncos safety situation but I am a bit more worried about Brandon and Ferguson returning from injuries, so I don't mind them taking a shot here.

Alright.....
While Safety was not a surprise, taking Wendling here is a little. But that is how it goes when you think outside the box. Good job Guru....
This SB Nation mock draft turned out great. Hopefully we'll get to do it again next year....

great job...
I doubt Shanny would address all defense on day 1. In 2001 he went all-defense on Day 1, and it's considered by many (including yourself it seems) to be his worst draft. Especially when you consider the receivers this year. This WR class is deep, and I don't think he can help but stick his hand in that candy jar on Day 1.
Overall, great picks.
