The 2007 NFL Draft Day Open Thread and Diary -- ROUNDS 4 & 5

The Broncos don't have a pick in the 4th or 5th round, so I'll open this thread up for both rounds.

BREAKING NEWS

The Raiders and Patriots have agreed to a trade that would send Randy Moss to New England for a 4th round selction, pending a physical.  This deal has been discussed for a while now, and the Pats finally decided to make the deal when Moss agreed to re-do his current contract, scheduled to pay him $20 mil over the next two years.

I know the Broncos have had a productive off-season, but not nearly as effective as the Pats who added the top defensive player available and now Moss, who when he wants to play can still be the best in the NFL.

Talk about the trade, and the 4th and 5th rounds here!

Michael Bush
to the Raiders. It seems fitting that the Raiders take him to open the second day.

by Russ on Apr 29, 2007 9:11 AM MDT   0 recs

After further review
I like our picks yesterday and think the Broncos really improved the team.  I am sold on both Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder and think they will contribute both next year and for year's to come.  It is hard to argue with Denver's philosophy of targeting the player they want and then moving to grab him, but when you compare what Denver did at 21 with what Dallas did at 22 it seems that our aggressiveness hurt us.

We most likely would not have been able to get Moss had we done that although it was a possibility if he slipped a bit and Denver was able to trade back up with Philly as Dallas did.  The more likely scenario would have been getting T Crowder at 36 (Cleveland's pick), Q Moses at 56 (Oakland took him at 65), R Harris at 70 (no change) and then we would have the 86th pick, the 198th pick and Cleveland's first rounder next year.

Obviously there are no guarantees that things would have worked out that way and we don't know how Moses will compare to Moss as a pro.  But even though I am happy with the the way things turned out, I am a bit disappointed when I think about what could have been.

Vikings trade their pick
to the Broncos, for what I'm not sure yet.

Add another Gator to the Broncos roster as they selected Marcus Thomas. Hope the character issues don't come back to hurt anyone.

by Russ on Apr 29, 2007 10:28 AM MDT   0 recs

Marcus Thomas
The DT from Florida, who got booted from the team...Very talented, but questions about attitude...

by TheSportsGuru on Apr 29, 2007 10:30 AM MDT   0 recs

Not a terrible risk at this point
We gave up our last two picks in this draft plus our third next year.  I would have preferred to give up the Skins 4th, but what can you do.  If Thomas gets his act together, this is a great pick.  If he is another Maurice Clarett, the Broncos haven't given up that much.

The only unfortunate thing is that it leaves Denver without a pick to grab everyone's favorite sleeper, safety Brandon Harrison.

by MattR on Apr 29, 2007 10:34 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Pray he falls to UDFA
There should be some adequate safeties available after the draft, as usual.

by WABronco on Apr 29, 2007 10:38 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Harrison just got drafted
not surprised it was Houston and Kubiak screwing us :)

Oh well.  Denver usually does a good job with undrafted rookies.  I'm just gonna try not to think of anyone else I want to slide to avoid the jinx.

by MattR on Apr 29, 2007 11:19 AM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Ahhh
Sorry for being late. I caught the Broncos pick of Marcus Thomas. I think it could really pay off if things go well, kind of like Michael Bush in Oakland (albeit the concerns are very different).

Anybody know trade details yet?

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 10:32 AM MDT   0 recs

Wowwww
Making a move for a guy like Marcus Thomas is very intriguing.  We give up our last two picks today plus a 3rd next year, and I still like it.

Frankly, I see this as a low risk, high reward move.  Shanny's already shown that he's willing to axe his pet projects (MoClo), so I don't think there's a reason to worry that Thomas becomes a sideshow, at least right away.

And, actually, I'd rather have a guy that likes the gonja than a guy who assaulted a cop, anyways...

by WABronco on Apr 29, 2007 10:37 AM MDT   0 recs

It's interesting
that since we don't have any picks left, I'm just identifying guys and hoping they keep sliding to UDFA.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 10:40 AM MDT   0 recs

I just got in
and if you want Guru, I'll do a Thomas write up

it's up in the diary section
if you want it.

Wendling is still on the board.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 11:33 AM MDT   0 recs

I love technology
I am very much looking forward to coming back to these threads in the months and years ahead to see what an idiot I am.

by MattR on Apr 29, 2007 11:54 AM MDT   0 recs

Aha
Oh yeah. I'm already pumped for Jarvis Moss to shred his knee on the second snap in training camp.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 12:09 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Crosby still on board
as KC snatches up Justin Medlock.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 12:12 PM MDT   0 recs

Very surprised
granted Crosby did not consistently show accuracy as a senior, the leg strength plays at sea level (see Miami game) and for as much press as returners are getting, why would teams not jump at a guy that eliminates kick returns?

by ohnokoolaid on Apr 29, 2007 12:23 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Annndd
Goodbye Frampton

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 12:18 PM MDT   0 recs

Denver could deal back in
if they felt they had openings for a few sliding players. Brandon Siler makes sense as a playmaker against the run and depth at all three linebacker positions.  I like Earl Everett, but not enough to trade in for, as he could fall out of the draft based on workouts.  Can you really have too many Gators from that amazing defense?

I'm a fan of both Michael Johnson and Michael Coe as ballhawking safeties, coe may slip out of the draft.

Louis Leonard has the size to set in two gaps, and could make sense in round seven if the deal is right.

I'm 90% positive that Quintin Echols will be a Bronco.  He likely won't be drafted, wants to be here, and fits the scheme.  I'm expecting him as a UFA.

Juwan Simpson and KaMichael Hall are two weakside candidates that could convert to strong safety or add depth to special teams.  Both should get drafted, but...

Thomas Clayton and Jon Cornish are two running backs that fit the scheme, though they may also take a peak at Darius Walker if he falls, since he has the skills to play on third downs and could get a shot as a returner.

Chansi Stuckey of Clemson is better than his workouts indicate, and could fit as a returner/slot type.

...scratch Michael Coe...

by ohnokoolaid on Apr 29, 2007 12:36 PM MDT   0 recs

We seem to pickup solid guys
every year that go undrafted. I'd really be satisfied with a Brandon Siler or Earl Everett. If I had a choice, I'd take Darius Walker over both Clayton and Cornish. Chansi Stuckey would be a really sly pickup if we could find a way to bring him in.

Actually, now I'm really excited to see who we get as undrafted FA

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 12:50 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Gwrawr
Wendling to Buffalo.

Another dream dies.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 12:59 PM MDT   0 recs

Safety...
Obviously is not a concern to Shanny.  True, you can't address every need, every draft.

Hopefully Abdullah is as good as Lynchie thinks he is...

by TheSportsGuru on Apr 29, 2007 1:15 PM MDT   0 recs

I think it came down to
what I've been saying, and average to above average safety would have a hard time making this team.  Lynch, Ferguson, and Brandon are the big three here, and as has been mentioned, the team really likes Abdullah.

by ohnokoolaid on Apr 29, 2007 1:22 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Crosby to GB
I wondered with 3 straight picks if they might take him.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 1:25 PM MDT   0 recs

What does the pubic not know
about Brandon Siler?

Now that Bishop of Cal has been taken over him, there must be a major red flag with Siler, since Bishop is an inferior athlete with little to no upside.  Is there a big injury risk found in a physical?  Character issues that have yet to come to the surface?  He doesn't speak English and only reads hierogliphics?

by ohnokoolaid on Apr 29, 2007 1:25 PM MDT   0 recs

I have NO earhtly idea
But I'm absolutely mystified by Siler still being here when guys like the aforementioned Bishop are being scooped up. If a guy like Rory Johnson goes before Siler, I'm publicly declaring shenanigans.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 1:28 PM MDT   0 recs

Dallas just traded up for a FB
It's tough to really complain about the Broncos draft when I see a team trading up for fullbacks. So goofy.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 1:33 PM MDT   0 recs

Damn
There goes Courtney Taylor.  Seattle's had a real nice draft so far, even without a first rounder...

by WABronco on Apr 29, 2007 1:41 PM MDT   0 recs

Siler/Walker still there
I could see Denver going to get a WR after the draft.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 1:46 PM MDT   0 recs

Odd tidbit
Hawaii has had 5 players drafted today. Bet that doesn't happen every year.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 1:50 PM MDT   0 recs

They would have had six
if the highly overrated Colt Brennan left school as several assumed.  He would have dueled Troy Smith for most "shocking" day two slide for quarterbacks.

by ohnokoolaid on Apr 29, 2007 1:53 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Thought about that
It would have been interesting. I don't see why people who consider themselves "draftniks" ask questions like, "WHY HASN'T CHRIS LEAK BEEN DRAFTED? HE WON THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP." It's really frustrating. This was the first year that I quit scouring the net for mock drafts and people's opinions and did all of my own work. It'd really be an upset if Leak was drafted at all. I could see Zabransky going before Leak, if anything.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 1:58 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Heh
Remember all the Jackie Battle hype going into the draft?

Yea, so much for that.

by WABronco on Apr 29, 2007 2:10 PM MDT   0 recs

I saw him play in person
can't say I came away stunned...

by ohnokoolaid on Apr 29, 2007 2:15 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Marcus Thomas' conference call...
On denverbroncos.com

Really bad audio though.  Sounds like a nice, sociable guy.

by WABronco on Apr 29, 2007 2:18 PM MDT   0 recs

Chase Pittman
finally goes off the board. I swear Oakland tried to pick him at the top of Round 2.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 2:27 PM MDT   0 recs

lol - was just thinking about that
182 picks between LSU players

by MattR on Apr 29, 2007 2:31 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Houston
drafts Zach Diles. Siler still sitting there. I feel for the kid.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 2:37 PM MDT   0 recs

at this point he would probably not be drafted
and get to choose where he goes as a free agent.  I can't imagine the money difference between a 7th rounder and a UDFA is that big.

by MattR on Apr 29, 2007 2:39 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

If Denver wants him
I wonder if the drafting of Thomas and Moss could play a role in swaying him, not to mention an opening on the starting unit.

by ohnokoolaid on Apr 29, 2007 2:41 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

The run on kids not named SIler
but playing the same position continues. This is getting fun.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 2:43 PM MDT   0 recs

Siler must've interviewed poorly
THere has to be some "draftable" value in the kind of run defense he brings.  I mean, Jeremiah Trotter has a starting job...

by WABronco on Apr 29, 2007 2:51 PM MDT   0 recs

Damn
Michael Johnson fell this far?  Wow.  Solid value and athlete.

by WABronco on Apr 29, 2007 2:51 PM MDT   0 recs

Ron Jaworski
is allllll over Matt Moore.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 2:51 PM MDT   0 recs

Heeeey
How about getting David Ball as an UFA.

I'm still giddy about the Rox turning a triple play.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 3:11 PM MDT   0 recs

Ahahahahahaha
Just as I saw SD come up on the clock, I thought outloud "I bet they take Siler, just to piss me off." Then they did.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 3:30 PM MDT   0 recs

And down the stretch we come
Only 13 compensatory picks left so no more trading.  There are still 8 players undrafted from Pro Football Weekly's top 150 with CB Kenny Scott the highest rated at 98.

by MattR on Apr 29, 2007 3:37 PM MDT   0 recs

Great draft companions
It was a helluva lotta fun to go through two grueling days with ya'll. Thanks to OhNo, TSG, MattR, WABronco, broncodude793, and KTempest for all of the back and forth over the last few days.

Memorable draft. Already can't wait for next year's go-round.

by BroncoManiac44 on Apr 29, 2007 4:12 PM MDT   0 recs

It was fun as always
I'd keep checking over here in the next few days, as I'm sure there's plenty of draft wrap up left to do, maybe a handicapping of player's chances to make the team, start, produce, etc.

by ohnokoolaid on Apr 29, 2007 4:32 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Well
Interesting UDFA:

Rod Rogers, S, Wisconsin
JD Nelson, S, Oregon
Willis Barringer, S, Michigan

Tim Mixon, CB/KR, California

Earl Everett, OLB, Florida
KaMichael Hall, OLB, G. Tech
Tony Taylor, OLB, Georgia

Louis Leonard, DT, Fresno St.
Larry Birdine, DE, Oklahoma

Alonzo Coleman, RB, Hampton
Darius Walker, RB, Notre Dame
Ronnie McGill, RB, North Carolina
Selvin Young, RB, Texas

Matt Trannon, WR, Michigan State
Rhema McKnight, WR, Notre Dame

Not a whole lot of skill position talent still available...

by WABronco on Apr 29, 2007 4:25 PM MDT   0 recs

My vote goes to Earl Everett.
Signing him would make a trifecta of Gators, plus he is an Anthropology major, like Thomas.  Those of us who majored in Anthropology need to stick together!

by Arctic Bronco on Apr 29, 2007 5:26 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Everett has been a big Thomas supporter
And would probably be worth signing (and maybe even keeping on the practice squad) just for his influence over Marcus.

by MattR on Apr 29, 2007 11:40 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

You know you're a serious fan when
you start breaking down the scrap heap and figuring where some of these guys fit in. I love this part.
