Bell #30!!?!?

WTF?!

http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_5579573

Mike Bell will be paid 10k from Travis Henry and gets to wear TD's number...

Apparently Bell asked TD if it was ok and "he was cool" with it, but COME ON!  that number should be retired!

--------------------------------------------
In the eighth grade, Mike Bell wore a No. 30 Broncos jersey to school every day.

It's 10 years later, and Bell will wear that same number to work every day. But he felt the need for permission from Terrell Davis, the man who made that number famous in Denver.

"T.D. said it's OK, so I'm going to wear 30," Bell said Monday.

A rookie running back for the Broncos last season, Bell has agreed to sell the No. 20 he wore to free-agent pickup Travis Henry. Henry stuck to a previous offer that he would pay $10,000 for the right to take the number he wore while playing at Tennessee. Bottom line: Bell gets the cash and the opportunity to wear the number Davis wore from 1995-2001.

"I think he was surprised that I asked him," Bell said of Davis. "But he was cool about it, and I appreciate it."

I 100% Agree
Even if #30 isn't "officially" retired, it should be "un-officially".  I would have reservations about a #1 draft pick taking 30, but Mike Bell?  I like the guy and all, but come on!!!

And like Bell said, I think TD WAS surprised, surprised that a virtual no-name asked to wear his number....

Can you retire a number for 2 players?
I know it's kind of off-topic, but...

If there was ever a reason to retire a number for two separate players, 27 shouldn't be worn by a Bronco again.  The number belongs to BOTH Atwater and Dwill.

On-topic: I think "a virtual no-name" is a little harsh, Mike Bell could be our next non-drafted star.  But I agree, he shouldn't wear 30.  TD to the Hall!

yeah...
a bit, but the point was he is an undrafted player, and if he would ever become the type of player TD was it would be an even bigger story than TD...

I just think the fact he wore 30 in high school is none the reason for him to wear it for the Broncos...

As for 27, I agree, and even if it is never "officially" retired I'd imagine no one will be too eager to wear it in the near future...

save #30 for those who deserve to wear it
Mike Bell is just not at that point right now.  If he rushes for 1250 yards next year, then he can wear it.

In fact, that is my new rule.  Any RB that can get 1250 yds in a season can wear #30 the next year.  (One day, in the distant future, we will have a similar rule for any CB who can get 10 INTs)

I still don't buy
Bowlen's argument that TD belongs in the HoF but not in the Ring Of Fame/having his number retired.

From a practical standpoint I can understand why the NFL doesn't want teams to retire too many numbers but without Davis how many championships would the franchise have?
