Can You Please Explain This To Me?
“When Shanahan left me, he went to Denver. He was there for about four or five years as an assistant and they fired him for insubordination,” Davis said. “Dan Reeves and he had a big battle. He went to the 49ers and he learned their style of football and when Dan Reeves failed in Denver, the first guy they had was Wade Phillips, I think, then he brought Shanahan back. And Shanahan had success. But Shanahan has an asterisk next to those two Super Bowls, because they were caught cheating.”
I was not aware that the Broncos cheated.

Al...
….is probably referring to the slary cap problems the Broncos got into. Broncos were fined by the league. I forget the details, but it’s pretty clear the Broncos SB teams did not benefit from the mistakes made by some guy in the front office.

There's been a few other fanposts on the question.

Finally, here’s an article from the Washington Post that people have brought up before which basically says the accounting issues arose due to difficulties the Broncos were having with cash flow after building the new stadium. The article mentions Al’s beef as well.

Just consider the source....
I happened to catch a little tv coverage of the Raiders press conference to announce their new coach (Ithink his name is Tom Cable, who has been the O line coach). At any rate, the camera and mike catch Davis, before the conference starts, saying “Who’s going to introduce him? I don’t know anything about him.”

That sounds about right
I simply have no respect for Davis.

Davis...
…according to usatoday, accused the Patriots of tampering with Randy Moss prior to last year’s trade. Davis is really something.
BTW, Tom Cable joined the Raiders as O line coash in 2007.

I guess the microphones caught a lot
the SF chronicle’s Nancy Gay noted this:
At the end of the formal outing and trashing of Kiffin, Davis engaged in a customary chat with the Bay Area media. Before that began, a Fox television camera caught audio of Davis exchanging these words with his main consigliere, John Herrera:
“Did I call him a liar enough?”
Given the way he treats those who coach for him, The Raiders will never get a top flight coach as long as Davis is in charge.

from the SF Chronicle
Then again, he [Davis] took Flores back after Flores’ years in Seattle, so maybe what we’re actually talking about here is Davis liking and supporting two coaches in his 45 years running the Raiders – himself and John Madden.

He is still obsessed with Shanny
Al is a fool, and he keeps throwing good coaches under the bus. Lombardi was on Cowherd this morning and said Kiffen was set ip to fail. Kiffen wasnt allowed to speak with Lombardi at all. Kiffen when hired was not even a finalist for the U of Minnesota heach coaching job. Al gets what he deserves. Lombardi left because, dare he, disagrees with Al 1 time too many. He said he had a good 4-5 years there and the last 3-4 were HELL.

Al Davis is just a stupid b**tard. :P
Shanny has as many rings as Al Davis does…hahahaha Sorry Saint, but Al Davis is off his rocks as usual and full of crap as usual. Al Davis is mad as hell and isn’t going to take this anymore! At least until he fires his next coach next season…

al davis
posed as a reporter once, asking a bronco db(off the record) about exactly how they were going to play the raiders on sunday. he was an assistant with oakland at the time. that is cheating, my friend. al said it best when asked if he thought he would have to pay kiffin. “i will prevail, otherwise i wouldn’t have done it”. shows you where his head is at, doesn’t it? god, i love it. thank you, al!

You got that right Zappa
The same Al Davis who has his players cheat as often as possible back in the good ole days….
And then Davis said
""When Shanahan left me, he went to Denver. He was there for about four or five years as an assistant and they fired him for insubordination,"
I guess if you call Elway and Shanahans relationship insubordination on Shannys part. Ha! Reeves didnt like Elway and Shanny talking behind Reeves back, so he fired Shanahan. And Mr. Davis, it was only three years not 4 or 5, before Shanahan was released.
And then you could see how long Reeves lasted without Shanahan. One year without Shanahan, then Reeves was released by Bowlen. If there was ever a Head Coach with an ego, it was Reeves. Shanahan gets that a lot, but Reeves was worse. Remember the front page that said “Reeves, the most Powerful Man in Denver”? That got to his head.

As long he is there running things I think they will lose. And that is fine with me.

Thats what I am saying
Al Davis (the current incarnation) is the best man for running the raiders into the ground, something all Denver fans want to see. I hope he lives to be 130.

Right on Jibbons! Keep letting Al run the Raiders into the Ocean
The San Andreas fault piacticaly runs right thru Oakland. A San Andreas Earthquake could very well take Oakland out when half of California drops into the ocean.
“Hey! There’s a good pool question.”
What will push the Raiders into San Francisco Bay first? Al Davis or a SAF Earthquake?

Insubordinate?
I guess when someone is as mentaly ill as Al Davis (major paranoia issues going on there), EVERYONE is insubordinate.
Those statements come off as sour grapes. I think Al is getting harder and harder for oakland fans to defend. He’s clearly in decline mentaly.
As for the salary issues, I think the controversy was put to bed in the coments that Nburns linked (under “Shanahan a cheater”).

This may be a dumb Question
What if Shanny brought in Lane to work for us free on the offense as an assistant or something, not really sure what position. Any way this would stick it to Al Davis and get a young mind to help out. I think Lane could help and piss Al off at the same time. I love it cuz Al would be paying him to work for our Team and gives Lane time until that college coaching gig comes up.. Just a thought..

I have no doubt...
…that Denver is sending out feelers to Kiffen. He has a lot of intel on oakland, and is really a sharp cookie who didn’t have a bat’s chance in heck working under Davis. Davis nixed every good idea Kiffen had, then blamed Kiffen for the team failing.
I bet Shanny would love to stick it to oakland by getting Kiffen.

I may put up a fanpost if I have time
but I really am not interested in Kiffin, and not jsut because I don’t think we have a spot for him. He exhibits a lot of physical and attitude characteristics of someone who isn’t trustworthy.
Maybe that is just because of the situation he is coming out of, but I don’t think Shanahan is fond of him either…

Lane handled the situation poorly
He’s young and a bit impetuous. But from everything I’ve seen I honestly think that he felt forced into doing what he was doing, that he did it out of frustration and not spite. I don’t think he had any lines of communication with Al so he took his gripe to the media. It was wrong, but you’d want to vent a little too if your owner couldn’t get you enough corners to run 1 on 1 drills.
It’s hard to say because of all the drama, but Lane might not be quite ready to handle all of the responsibilites of a head coach. But theres no doubt he’s got a good football mind and could benefit an NFL team right now .
And you know Shanahan would bring in anyone, even an Art Shell, just to spite Al.
by RaiderPete on Oct 1, 2008 7:27 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Pete, I think we agree.
Lane was surely frustrated, but it’s the mark of a young man to take his gripes public. I think Kiffen was in the right (he wasn’t given the decision making skills to run his team the way he needed to), but that’s no excuse for airing the laundry in public, no matter how right he was.
I’m interested in seeing what Styg has to say on the matter. There may certainly be a maturity factor in play. Still, Al’s handling of the entire matter didn’t put young Kiffen in a position to suceed (nor the raider’s by extension).
Clearly, I’m no fan of the raiders. But I do think (all rivalry aside) that Al Davis is mentaly ill, and his deteriorating situation is dragging down his organization. He has said that he will pass the team to his wife after he dies, but I don’t know if that will help matters. His daughter also has some behavioral issues too.
While I can’t say I want the raiders to be winners, I don’t want a storied franchise in the NFL to be dragged down by one, sick old man either.

When Oakland comes to town in November, it would be pretty sweet if Kiffin and Shanny were on the sideline together.
