(rookie Cadillac Williams was out)  --  see these runs they show, and offtopic look at Chambers one handed grab wow, but Pittman shows good speed and power here.

Chefs @ Bucs 2004 -

Chttp://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d803b9812 check out his run @ 1:09 a little after the Eddie Quitterson fumblerooskie , he had 3 rushing TDs on the day and 15 carries for 128 yds.

Who said Pittman was slow? looks fast enough to breakaway.

Yeah hes hold but he doesn't really have much carries on him, so lets run him give him the rock and let him run people over.

hes also really great on screen passes.

Any chance he starts over Hall with Young out this week?

My Sentiments Exactly

I’ve posted several very similar comments within the past week.

I agree that he is faster than people give him credit for, perhaps faster than Hall.

I also agree that, although he is an 11 yr vet, his body has taken the abuse of a 7 or 8 yr vet.

This is not to say that I want Pittman to be the full time runner for the long term. I would be happy if he got 15-20 carries per game until we see what Torain has to offer.

Good stuff KJ3!

I think Pittman

will get increased reps this week for sure. I don’t know if that makes him the first back to come into the game or whether his name will be ahead of Young or Hall on any lists, but I am sure that Shanny is gameplanning more opportunities for Pittman against JAX.

I really like the way Pittman runs, and I really like that he will likely be rewarded for his determination and effort. I worry about his age only inasmuch as I think he will be surprised at how quickly he will get worn down when he is getting primary back hits. But I do think he will be effective as the primary ball carrier, and that it will help Denver win in the games ahead.

That being said: I don’t like it. He was exceptionally effective just the way he was, but I recognize that that wasn’t going to last. Selvin and Andre simply aren’t getting it done, and that was going to start causing problems for Pittman’s production down the line. If Shanny bumps Pittman’s carries it will be an indictment of Selvin Young, and even of Hall to some extent. But i think we pretty much saw this coming. I was hoping we could hold out at least until after the bye, but that probably won’t be the case.

The thing to watch out for is that this is a last ditch effort to get a spark out of the running game and give us a chance to get a little more offensive balance. This is truly our last option. If this doesn’t work out, then we will be waiting for Torain and playing unbalanced on offense, and that will come back to haunt us down the line. Good teams can’t afford to be one dimensional.

But I’m not saying the sky is falling. I still think we can win, even as a one dimensional team, because that one dimension is pretty darn good, and the backs can step up even if they aren’t playing well. But I think the wins will be very, very scary.

I disagree with the thought that Young isn't getting it done

He’s averaging 5.7 yards per carry, which is excellent. He projects to rush for 851 yards on 150 carries, and that is good production from a guy who is part of a tandem. His aggregate production is mostly a function of the frequency with which he has been given the ball, which is a function of the team’s evaluation that he is best when his carries are limited, and that you get into diminishing returns with him as his workload increases.

By comparison, Hall is getting 4.5 per carry, and Pittman 4.1. I like Pittman doing exactly what he is doing, and I hope we can keep him in that role until his wheels fall off. He is a great short-yardage and 3rd down back. I’ve still never seen Ryan Torain carry a football, so I don’t fully share in the widespread optimism about him. I hope he is as good as he is imagined to be, and can fit somewhere into this rotation, and be effective.

This team isn’t going to be balanced, because the coaching staff has (correctly, IMO) determined that their best path to the end zone is to attack with the passing game. Smarter teams the past 5 years or so have built leads by passing in the first half of games, and then protected those leads by running more in the second half. I think that is the idea of what we’re trying to do this season, and I agree with it.

Being a

Texas Longhorns fan (2nd to CU), I have seen Young play for quite some time now. He is a great change of pace back (and very similar to Aldrige so I don’t know if we need both of those guys), but not a primary back. He was hurt too much at UT and has been hurt during his short time with the Broncs. Although he is averaging 5.7 yards per carry, I would be curious as to how many runs he has in obvious running situations and what his average is on those downs. I feel that his high yards per carry are a product of him being used in situations when the Broncos could either run or pass.

Pittman is just the opposite. He runs the ball primarily in obvious running situations (short yardage and goal line) and therefore has a lower yards per carry. I think he deserves the chance to prove that he can be a primary back and can withstand the workload of 15-20 carries per game, at least until Torain returns.

And, again, my opinion of Hall is that he is a decent special teamer, nothing more or less.

Diminishing returns is a fair argument

and I am still on Selvin’s side. He seemed extremely motivated at the start of the season. I am going to look into those numbers you provided, see what the story is…
