What Boss and Shanny Had to Say

This link is to an article in the DP a few days ago concerning what Boss had to say about the 34 defense, as well as what Shanny had to say about the fumble by Marcus Thomas (hilarious).  Sorry if the faithful members have already seen this.  I don't visit the DP near as much as I used to before finding MHR.

Only reason I post this is to further encourage discussion on possible movement to the 34 as the base defense.  I've been for this for some time now.

Question for someone more knowledgeable than me...Out of the past 10 SB winners, how many have run the 34 as a base defense?

With Jarvis Moss possibly moving to OLB makes the 3-4 a much more promising proposition.

Patriots = 3 Super Bowls
Steelers = 1 Super Bowl

I’m not sure if there were any others…none I know of anyway. Baltimore is a 4-3 I think, if not then you can add them to the above list. I know Indy, TB, NYG, or Rams were not 3-4s

It might be better to look at home 3-4 defenses are in the playoffs each year.

Baltimore ran a base 4-3 in 2000

though they dabbled with some 3-4 stuff when Mike Nolan was there later on. A 30 front is not inherently better than a 40 front, or vice-versa. They each have their own benefits and costs. You can definitely win with either.

Rec'd comment.

This is why I love reading Ted’s take on anything X’s and O’s. Too many folks make the assumption that a formation or a system is just “better”. Like everything else in football, there is a trade off involved. Each has weaknesses and strengths. It’s much more about how well a team executes what they are running.

So 4 out of 10

Not too bad but less than I might have thought. But far more teams run a 43. I just think it is much easier to get pressure on the qb with a 34 zone blitz, especially if you don’t have a stud pash rusher like Michael Strahan or Mario Williams.

Many teams run both

Baltimore, New England and Dallas (I believe) at least ran both lats year, not sure if they still do this year…

I am not convinced they are going to run exclusively a 3-4.

I think Slowik is just trying to mix it up as much as possible. I think they will eventually do a lot of different things to be as unpredictable as possible.

I'm not convinced either.

But I am convinced that a majority of our fan base will love the 3-4 formation when we win and hate it when we lose.

Moss is too lanky for LB

I hate to say it but Jarvis will never be able to cover, he is fast but that is straight line speed. I would love to see it work but I am skeptical of that move. Smells like desperation, which I hear is a stinky cologne. How many 6-6 linebackers are there?

53 Thanks for the post--I had already read the article but had not seen the humor in it.

It is fun to know that we have a 300 pound tackle that can drop back and cover. In this really strange case—and only in this case do I not agree with Shanny. Marcus…if you read this…go for it!!!! 300 pound tackles that can drop back in coverage and intercept a pass deserve a touchdown someday.

Go Marcus!!!

The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.

Yeah just protect the ball better

I heard Thomas was lobbying for some carries in goal line situations. He may have lost his opportunity. He’s “slow”.

LOL

I really like this team

for some reason

The reason

is because they are the best franchise on the planet, and we would all slowly suffocate without our orange and blue oxygen!!
