Around SBN: Keith Hernandez Reacts To Gary Carter's Passing

Slightly disturbing trend...

I may be over reacting a bit, but it appears that our offense is reverting to old ways and leaving a lot of points out on the field.  Take a look at this trend: 41, 39, 34, 19, 16.  That's our point total from Week 1 to Week 5.  I'm not saying the reversion is complete, but our coaching staff needs to work on the red zone some more and get this offense back into scoring dominance.  If we don't score more points than we have in the past two weeks, this game will be very difficult to win.  See you guys tomorrow...GO BRONCOS!

I was thinking the same thing.

The offense is starting to look like the ‘07 version. I’ll say that the past 2 weeks have been a blessing in disguise. The Chief’s game was definitely a wake-up call. Last week’s game was the kind of game that the Broncos needed…so that they could have the confidence that they could grind out a win. I agree wholeheartedly though, that the red-zone offense needs to be more efficient. They need to pour on the points against the Jags defense. From a fantasy perspective, I would love to see Cutler air it out to Marshall for tons of scores…they killed me last week. LOL. GO BRONCOS!!!

I drafted...

Jay Cutler, Selvin Young, Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal, Tony Scheffler, and Andre Hall, just to see what would happen. I am 5 – 0 in that league and in the league where I drafted according to ESPN’s rankings i am 1-4.

I picked up

Cutler, Marshall, Scheff in the draft. Then picked up Royal, Prater, and Pittman off of waivers. I also just added Torain so no one else could get him once he is in the lineup. I started out 3-0, but have lost the last 2 by a combined 17 total points. We definately need to get our offence back to scoring 40 a game.

I did the same thing with torain

someone picked up Pittman as soon as it looked like he would be the feature back…little do they know the power of the Torain (or so I hope)

I got Torrain as well. Just missed Pittman though.

Some system issues.

TB and KC both ran cover two systems (Tampa-2 in TB’s case). These require more conservative play calling in the passing game.

and even at that we left points on the field against them

I would say against TB we were a 24 point team, enough to beat a lot of teams in this league. Also, regarding the trend itself, I think just about everyone is feeling something similar. Offenses generally get off to better starts than the defense, at least it appears that way to me….

Yes, the Broncos will continue to see lots of cover 2.

Cause teams found out the first three weeks that our OL, WRs, and QB are too good to play man coverage. Teams are going to try and force us to dink and dunk and convert more 3rd downs.

But JC showed much improvement in his approach last week. And our running game showed improvement. Plus we missed a long TD to Royal. Shanny is right that if we just convert more of our 3rd downs that we could have scored a lot more. Plus, with the way Prater is kicking, we can easily get 15 points a game just from field goals. Throw in a couple of TDs and that is 29.

Despite the defensive approach, I think we are going to break through this week on this defense. I see 30+ points again.

True that HT

Cutler struggled with the KC Cover 2, but learned from it and adjust last week against the Bucs. That shows me that he’s maturing as a QB. I think he’s going to tear the Jags up tomorrow.

If Cutler continues to get good protection...

…from the Jax front 7, I agree that Cutler tears it up. The key for Jax is that they MUST get to Cutler. The banged up secondary of JAX couldn’t handle DEN if healthy. It all depends on Jax’s front 7.

dont forget

against KC Denver had 4 turnovers and had a bad RZ day. Against Tampa they were taking what TB was giving them. Plus TB has a real good defense. I can see Denver putting 24+ points on Jax. There pass defense sucks and they got no pressure on Ben R. He tore up the Jax secondary and I feel JC is a better QB than him, with better weapons

I'm not too concerned with this right now

If we don’t put up many (21+) points this week I might BEGIN to worry about this.

Zappa--I share your concern

I’m not really sure if our rediculous showing in KC scared Shanny back to the basics—or teams have seen something in films that show a glaring weakness. If we have a glaring weakness in our offense—it could be our offensive line. As young as we are, and as fine a job as they have done in pass protection—they may be struggling in the zone-block for runs. If this is the case we become a one dimension team that is easily defensed. I hope this not the case.

My real thought however is that we went into KC with a wide open crush mentality, got hurt early with turnovers, and shook up our very young offense. With the previous three games no other aspect of our team had to step up. They just sat back—did a mediocre to poor job—and watched Jay and friends pull the win out of the fire.

Shanny is smart. Against Tampa I think he put the leash on Jay and friends forcing everyone else to step up.

My one fear this weekend is when we were proclaiming ‘13-3 baby’ as most of the site played ‘ney-sayers’ this is one of my three predicted losses—I hope I haven’t cursed us.

If we win this weekend I think I will bring back the orange n blue Koolaide-man avatar that Silverblood so kindly made—-because I think we can take new England the following Monday.

The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.

Hey

Jags CB Florence is back, whiich means Marshall and whoever else is stuffed by Jax’s corners. Cutler won’t get anything off on this tough Jax D and Garrard steamrolls over the even worse Denver D. Jags win.

doubtful

Florence and maethis are good, but not the equivalent of the oakland DBs, and the denver passing game dominated those two because the oakland front seven was unable to effectively pressure Cutler. That same oakland dline dominated SD a few weeks later, crushing phyllis rivers and making the corners look great.

If the JAX front seven can be effective, JAX will have a chance. If they don’t bring it, it doesn’t matter who you have in the secondary, the Denver offense has too many passing threats to cover them all.

Zappa, your concerns are proven RIGHT....

We are being schemed well because our Offense has become pass first and very one dimensional.
As well as our run game workred today, we did not stick with it, and could not get the job done….lets hope Ryan Torain is ha;f as good as we think….we need to get back to pounding games out, opening up the pass game and helping our defense out.

by boydy2669 on Oct 12, 2008 7:58 PM MDT reply actions

Pittman gave us a 100 yard effort....yesterday was all about

poor game planning and poor execution. The one bright mark was Pittman’s 100 yard rushing day. I doubt Torain could have changed the outcome. We were manhandled yet again

Great foresight on the points decline!

I agree with the game planning issue too. We need to stop being overly aggressive. (Yes, I hated the idea of going for it at the end of the first half when a simple FG would have tied the game. Too many throws equals turnovers, and we need to be confident enough in the running game to pound ahead in the redzone instead of predictably throwing all of the time).

Thanks HT

I hope this means a return to traditional Bronco football and a limited role for the new spread offense we had been toying with. We just don’t have the maturity of experience to run that kind of offense yet. I have no doubts that Cutler will eventually master the spread offense, but he is still young and prone to telegraphing his throws…better to keep the offensive attack balanced. That will end up giving Cutler more opportunities down field in the end. In my opinion anyway.
