Post Loss Good News for Broncos.

- So far the Broncos have only been beaten by themselves this year.

- The Broncos Defense forced a couple of turnovers.

- The Broncos Defense had a couple of sacks (almost three).

- Broncos running game continues to get better.

- Once again another game where JC does not get sacked.

- No big special team returns allowed allowed this game.

- Prater continues to be very reliable.

- Despite being double teamed, BM still had 9 catches.

- Back up players got a chance to play and develop (Martinez, Jackson, etc.)

- Moss actually got to play, and seemed to pressure the pocket a few times.

- Crowder was also seen on the field.

- The loss gives the young Broncos more impetus to learn from.

- The Broncos will continue to be over-looked, due to being viewed as over-rated.

- No serious injuries, and Broncos should get some weapons back for N.E.

- 5-2 Still sounds good, and is as good, if not better than most expected.

- The Broncos still lead the AFC West.

- Despite a couple of bad calls, the Broncos won't blame the refs, like S.D. or N.O.

Yeah, but...

this loss was a total team effort. JC should be mature enough to look off his receivers by now, but he doesn’t. He should be mature enough to check down when he knows BM is double teamed, but he doesn’t. Too many times I’ve heard JC and others refer to the “dink and dunk” as a bad thing, when this is exactly how their opponents are beating them. While the “dink and dunk” may not be pretty, it eats up the clock and tires the opposing defense almost as much as a dominating running game, yet we seem to be above that style of play. Teams have already figured out they can stop JC/BM with the cover 2. And the turn overs have got to stop!

The D didn’t get aggressive until the last quarter, and by then the Broncs had lost all momentum. When they were aggressive, it forced Garrard to throw sooner than he was comfortable with and the DBs were able to make plays on the ball. What a concept! Webster is a liability, as well as the safeties. Webster, McCree and Manuel may be fast, but all too often they are wreckless: missed assignments, missed tackles, over-pursuing the play, etc. Webster’s play is downright sloppy- all too often he’s going for the big hit and not the sure stop. They’re making the rest of the great players on D look bad. Yes, the D line is weak, but they appear to be getting better, and at least they are not sloppy like these three.

I doubt Shanny will make any significant changes while we still have a winning record and while we still lead the division, though.

Great post love the positive spin..

I tend to dwell on the negative and find myself in a bitch fest, before i know it i have bitched the season away and have missed out on the True Fun of the game.

Good points.

The one I really have to differ on is the injury to Stokley (conc). We’re carrying a small number of WRs, and Stokley is our best option at slot. I wouldn’t say we avoided any major injuries.

I do agree that we continue to show improvements in several areas of the game. Still, the loss shows me we aren’t yet a team dominant enough to go deep in a playoff run.

A concussion is usually not that bad.

Although on occasion it can turn out like Hamilton’s.

You’re right if the playoffs were to start right now, we would be in but, but not go far.
But the key to playoff success is how you finish and how much you improve over the year. And that is one of my points about this loss. It serves as a better impetus to improve, and to get better, and to have a better chance for success at the end of the year, when it really matters most.

by The Gun Young on Oct 13, 2008 8:02 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Concussions always scare me.

You make a great point on improvement. At the start of the season my goal was to see a team that was getting better and built around youth. making it to the playoffs was 50/50 in my book, and would just be icing on the cake. The nice thing is that we are young, and we are improving. My goal is a powerful team going into next year, and I think we are on schedule.

I think we have a good shot at finishing strong this year, and we can build on that going into ’09.

Concussions

Usually aren’t that bad, but when they are bad they’re REAL bad. Just ask Ben Hamilton, Bill Romanowski or Troy Aikman!

Defense improves....

But is let dwon by the same players on a consistent basis. Nate Webster is an ABSOLUTE liability, as is Marquand Manuel. Dre Bly is getting there though he played better in spurts.
Jay Cutler’s play is my BIGGEST concern. He is getting flustered, and when that happens he locks onto BM as his security blanket….this has now cost us 2 games.
We should have blown out the Jags and been up by 17 at the half but were sloppy, inept in stupid in all facets of our Offensive play from coaches to QB (excluding our O Line who are awesome and must be pissed that the greatest QB in the world managed to throw away another sure win!)
Awesome comments BornOrange…totally agree!
Cutler was our biggest liability yesterday!

you mean 4-2 right?

beating NEP will be tough as always on the road. 17-7 last time, tho, ;)

N.E. has lost it's confidence after the drumming by SD.

If we can get up early, and NOT turn the ball over, than we should coast to a victory.

by The Gun Young on Oct 13, 2008 7:58 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the Broncos have had a similar mindset.

The problem is, in the NFL you rarely coast to victory. If you look at the two 21-3 leads, as well as the ease with which the offense was moving the ball in the first quarter yesterday, I get the feeling like this team has a tendency to show up for the first 5 minutes, have success, and expect the rest of the game to continue that way. A lot of that can probably be attributed to youth, but they are going to have to learn to learn to maintain their intensity for the entire game.

Good post Gun Young

I agree that it is a good sign that the two games we lost we beat ourselves in. That is something you can fix. I’m also really syked that we, once again, gave up no sacks. Ryan Clady is a stone cold pimp! Our special teams did a MUCH better job. And it is very important to remember we are a young team.

Regarding Webster, I have been a Webster supporter. I felt like even tho he gives up some big plays, he is passionate, he is fast and he generally comes away from each game with a decent amount of tackles. But after this last game, I feel his inconsistency is too much of a liability for this defense. I seem to remember reading a quote from DWILL somewhere in the offseason where he stated that they are a better defense with K2. I also seem to remember Champ basically echoing that statement. I would be willing to bet that unless Webster has a stellar game on Monday, when we come out of the bye we will see K2 in at MLB. Infact I would say that any sizable changes will be made over the bye. That is Shannahan’s MO. Will be interesting to see how he shakes things up. I bet a lot will depend on the game next Monday.

Webster

I’m still on the fence. I love the intensity he brings. The hit on Taylor yesterday was lights-out and resulted in a huge play. Whenever they put a closeup on him, whether on the field or on the sidelines, he’s always jawing, always slapping someone on the helmet. I think our defense needs that intensity. DJ is not that guy. I don’t know if K2 is either. I agree though, the bye week this year will be interesting, always is.

by ButteBronco on Oct 13, 2008 11:28 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Intensity

only accomplishes so much. He needs to be more consistent. The hit on Taylor was beautifuly viscious, but I think that kind of play only encourages him to go for the kill every time, resulting in too many blown plays. His intensity may get the D fired up at the beginning, but if he continues to miss assignments and tackles, his lack of consistency may hinder the D as the game goes on. I think K2 deserves a chance- He’s more technically sound and could be a firey leader with some experience and confidence. Also, Shanny has also been known to send a message to an under-achiever (Web) by replacing him for a game or 2. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I missed the game

but the only clips I saw of Webster were him chasing Jones-Drew on the long TD run and whiffing on him when he came flying through a gap and tried to tackle his head instead of going lower on his body like he should have. Instead, he just slid right off Jones-Drew and didn’t even get him to change directions!

I would like to think that K2 would be able to get through that gap and actually make the tackle, if not knock him off balance a little.

Yes, good post, Young Gun

I didn’t mean to totally ignore your positives – I was just a bit frustrated after the game yesterday. I need to remember that this is a young team, coming off some major overhauls this past pre-season. They’re doing MUCH better than most gave them credit for prior to the season starting. It is still a building year, even if they make it to the playoffs like Shanny promised. This team is going to be DEADLY and DOMINANT over the next few years.

I have many of the same thoughts

Try to stay positive, it’s a long season and provided they improve from the lose, then that’s all you can hope for.

Excellent post

Its better than the bitching on how bad the play calling is or crap like that. I would not trade the Broncos start, seeing this is a YOUNG team and will only get better. Losing Stokley hurt, but the other WR’s have to step up.

somethings wrong, Trying to conquer these fears i thought were gone. And it's been so long, I'm dying to live in a world i don't belong

We are

in better shape than we should. We’re 3-2 in toss up games with a blowout of Oakland. I’ll take it. Better that then getting smashed by San Diego and New Orleans and beating the guys we should have. We have to push foward this year.

I wish Cutler didn't have tunnel vision.
