Week 7 NFL Power Rankings

Here are the Main Stream Media(MSM) Power Rankings around the web this week.  Below that you can find MHR's own Power Rankings for Week 7.  Feel free to discuss and even post your own rankings for this week.

Yahoo! Sports -- Ranked 10th, Last Week 8th

Sporting News -- Ranked 8th, Last Week 9th

ESPN -- Ranked 12th, Last Week 7th

Fox Sports -- Ranked (Lazy bastards, screw 'em!)th, Last Week 7th

CBS Sportsline -- Ranked 12th, Last Week 7th

Covers.com -- Ranked 11th, Last Week 8th

Sports Illustrated, Dr. Z -- Ranked 14th, Last Week 8th

Bill Williamson has proven he is a Charger fan.  The dude just can't help but rank them ahead of the Broncos after every Charger win and Bronco loss.  Dr. Z has also proven he is completely without credibility.  He moves the Chargers from 23rd to 8th in one week.  That just seems totally absurd to me.  The Broncos, predictably, plummeted in the power rankings around the web.  They were consistently the second lowest ranked four win team in the league, with several 3 win teams ranked ahead of them.  Rodney Dangerfield is coming back from the grave saying, "No respect I tell ya, no respect!"

Last week, the Broncos average rank was a deflated 7.7, but a man handling by the Jaguars made the critics come back out in droves.  As a result, our average rank dropped to 11.2. Now it's time to review the rankings of MileHighReport.com.

NOTE: I made a slight change in the MHR ranking system again this week.  I will keep a running tally of points of the entire year starting from two weeks ago.  That way, rankings will not swing wildly from week to week based on emotional response.  It should make for a more reasonable gain or loss in rankings.  No more 12 point jumps or plummets after just a single game.  In the points field, you will see the total points for the year with this week's totals in parenthesis directly below that.  After three more weeks, I will also start removing the high/lows from the season totals in the final tally to increase the accuracy even more.

I also added a trend field.  This graphic indicates whether the team improved over the course of the last two weeks.  For this week, teams may have moved up in the overall rankings even though they went down the trends and vise verse.  This will correct itself by next week, so I apologize for the confusion there.  The good news is -- This should be the final tweak for the year.  Enjoy!

i hate to defend pork chop

But in his Blog he ranked Denver 11 and SD 14. The espn power rankings are a total of all the assclowns on espn ranking the teams then taking the average. If you look at the breakdown over there at the 4 letter denver was ranked as high as 5 and as low as 15. Too me thats ok, screw em. Too me the only ranking that really matters is the one in the AFC West. Right now that is #1. To win the west is a guaranteed home playoff game no matter what

I agree...Though I hope you think that the assclowns here at MHR do a better job than the assclowns at ESPN...lol

What is an assclown? I think it’s going to replace the phrase “buck wheat” as my new favorite belittling word.

there are no assclowns here on MHR. I respect what everyone says or does, even if I disagree. But ESPN, SI. you name THOSE people are complete assclowns (like socialists). I had to change to assclown because what I use to say would be frowned upon here. =) (remember fmr sailor – i do have a salty vocabulary)

I only consider The Sporting News' rankings.

Michael Fabiano really knows nothing about football outside of regression analysis and stat extrapolation. If it doesn’t have to do with fantasy football, his opinion is worthless.

Giants at two?

They beat the Redskins 16-7 at home in the opener, before the Reds got organized under Zorn. Their opponents since then have a combined record of 4-18. They got really stomped at Cleveland.

Things must work themselves out....

can’t just knock the Giants all the way down after one loss. I got pissed when it happened to Denver, so a much more gradual decline is far better I think than the roller coaster rides of the assclowns at other websites. ;-)

I prefer that teams earn their way up or down…it will become more apparent in another two-three weeks who are the real contenders and who are the real pretenders.

My thinking on the Giants.

And feel free to disagree…

If we rank purely on merit, and not gut, we would have to go by the NFL’s tie break rankings. Currently, the NYGs are ranked #3 in the official NFL standings, and 1st in the NFC. That’s based on what gets a team into the playoffs, and what seed they would have. Opponents strength is down the list of tie break issues. If the playoffs were today, the NYGs would have first seed in the NFC.

On the other hand, the NYGs also rank high on “gut” instinct too. They are (after all) the defending SB champions. They have only lost one game. They lead their division and conference. Only the Bills and Titans have a better record (in tie break). They play well on both sides of the ball. They aren’t hampered by injuries. Regardless of when they beat the Redskins, they still beat ’em, and the Skins need to prove they are better withan actual win.

All in all, I think the Giants are an easy team to defend for the #2 ranking.

I agreed on the Giants..

…until Monday night. I was aware of their opponent’s weak record, and also their 26-23 win over the Bengals (in New York!) and still felt that, well, they’re the champs until they aren’t. But Monday night was a revelation. Call it the SB slump, maybe. We’ll see if they put it together.

Dallas

They do have a lot of injuries, including punter and TO’s ego. They signed Sam Paulescu to replace Mat McBriar at punter.

NFC Least.

The NFC East is wildly overrated. The Bengals took the Giants to OT and pushed the Cowboys to the brink in regulation. The Browns blew out the Giants. The Rams beat the Redskins. Dig a little deeper and their records look far less impressive.

The NFC period is overrated...except maybe the NFC South.

AFC is still the dominate league between the two…regardless of record.

Nits to Pick.

The Skins and Giants lose to two of the worst teams in pro football, but remain in the top three ahead of comparable powers with equal or better records? The Cowboys have no DBs and a back-up QB at the helm, but they’re still so highly regarded; by the way, they’re ranked 11 slots higher than the team with the same record that just beat them at closer to full strength than they are now. The Broncos beat the Bucs who in turn defeated the Panthers, yet their ranked in the inverse order expected. The Falcons are 4-2 after dropping the Bears to 3-3 (in a game they controlled for all but 10 seconds) and yet they’re seven slots behind. I’m tired of shifting through this, but I’m sure there’s more…

Here we go again: http://thefulldeck.blogspot.com/

The disparity will equal out within 2-3 weeks...

I just created this 3 weeks ago and I’ve been tweaking it every week. I think I’ve found the best set up, but the only problem is that the increased accuracy doesn’t start to show up until Week 8-9. If you want to know where we truly ranked these teams this week, check the point totals in parenthesis. You’ll notice the teams with the red arrow have worse marks than the teams with the green arrow.

A few points Ejru

First, even when a top ranked team loses a game to a bad team, that is not (in itself) a reason to drop a team. I recall the Patriots losing to the Dolphins at the start of a season a few years ago, but they still dominated the League.

As Zappa points out, teams shouldn’t rocket up and down the poll based on a single game.

Last, you can’t really argue that team A beat team B who beat team C who beat team A. The problem is circular. At some point, the worst team in the League may have beaten the best team in the League by stringing together enough variables. Also, what do you do when you have a case where team A beats itself (as in the algerbra example at the start of this paragraph)?

To me, the NYGs are the easiest to defend. I wrote in another comment:

If we rank purely on merit, and not gut, we would have to go by the NFL’s tie break rankings. Currently, the NYGs are ranked #3 in the official NFL standings, and 1st in the NFC. That’s based on what gets a team into the playoffs, and what seed they would have. Opponents strength is down the list of tie break issues. If the playoffs were today, the NYGs would have first seed in the NFC.

On the other hand, the NYGs also rank high on "gut" instinct too.

I think that the Skins are ranked a bit high in the poll, but I imagine some of the staff can justify their reasoning as well.

Remember too, this is all opinion and just for fun. None of us are experts. The difference between the MHR staff and some of the media types is that we know we aren’t experts, just highly informed fans that know more than a bunch of journalists. (And let’s not forget that some of them do a good job too).

If you check the scores in paranthesis you can see which teams are dropping rapidly...which is why I added the trend section.

If Washington continues to trend down they will fall fairly rapidly over the next few weeks. I think I have finally worked out all the kinks in this system and soon it will be as accurate as humanly possible when dealing with opinions. ;-)

Waiting for the tide to start going out here

so I have about twenty minutes to spare to put up some thoughts on the current status of the power rankings…(I will go in the order that I personally had them ranked, so the refer to Zappa’s post above for the official MHR rankings).

TEN: Not only are they the only undefeated team but they have been doing EXACTLY what they needed to do. That said, they have one of the weaker opponent records, so in my mind, they haven’t faced a real tough test.
TB: These guys, on the other hand, have one of the toughest adjusted opponents records, and have been competitive in every one, keeping the score close either by keeping the game low scoring or keeping up on offense. When Denver beat them, Denver was ranked one point ahead of them, but TB put away a team on a roll this week, and we lost to a team on the ropes. We can’t do that and expect to hang in there with the big boys.
ARI: These guys are hot, hot, hot! They have the best opponents record by far, and though they were up and down, their play has been getting better pretty consistently. This is one team that I fully expect to maintain a spot in the top ten at the end of the year.
NYG: I agree with Ejruiz, strength of opponent for this team is easily in the bottom quarter of the league. But the wins they got were beyond convincing. The loss hits them hard and shows that staying at the top of the power poll isn’t a gift. Ya gotta earn it!
WAS: Watch this team slip right out of the top ten. They have played worse every week, from the previous game, including their Dallas win, adn it caught up with them in losing to the Rams. I expect a rally, but I don’t expect it to last long enough for this team to be considered a top team at the end of the year. They have a good strength of opponent score, and it has taken its toll on them. They need a couple of cupcakes to get their mojo back, but they already whiffed on the first one. Not a good sign.
BUF: Another team that started strong but has been declining from week to week. Another week like week five and they will be out of the top ten.
DAL: This team is a worse version of Buffalo, dropping just slightly faster, and with more serious problems. I have them on a 4 week slide right now, and it will be a real test to see if they can play even slightly better next week.
ATL: This team plays better every week. Every new challenge they have gone up against they have responded to positively. A loss in the coming weeks wouldn’t even be much of a setback since they still have room for improvement in their play, and can make forward strides even in a loss. Good time to be an ATL fan.
PHI: They have a strong schedule and do a good job of staying with opponents, so major drops and rises shouldn’t be expected with this team. Losses to teams that are playing well shouldn’t destroy teams, it should make them stronger.
CAR: Still playing much better than they were even just three weeks ago. A divisional loss hurts them bad in the standings, but not so much ina power poll.

That is the top ten. i’ll give my thoughts on some of the other teams a bit later. Off to work!

You've got the Broncos as the worst 4-2 team in the league...

but that is no different than most everyone else. lol

We beat TB, TB destroys CAR, CAR is still considered better than DEN. The logic of power rankings can drive one mad…

Please do not put too much stock into this week’s power rankings, I went in a radical new direction and it will take at least two more weeks for things to start to work the way I intended them to work. I say radical, though at the time it seemed like a minor tweak. lol

Guru brings up a good point.

Each of the pollers look at something different. When you mix us together, you get a blend of perspectives.

Guru doesn’t look at record, he looks at what he sees on the field. I on the other hand, take into account where a team is ranked based on tie break, then tweak the positions based on injuries, head to head match-ups, and my gut for how well a team is playing (which is the factor that figures the most for Guru, except he isn’t using his "gut"). Styg explaines his philosophy with his top ten list, and Zappa and Mdierk explain their thinking through various comments as well.

FWIW, I ranked the Broncos in the top ten. They are 4th in the AFC, and 9th in the NFL in the NFL’s official tie break rankings. The game against the PATs will tell me a lot.

agreed

I think our personal preferences for ranking comes down to what it is we are trying to accomplish with the ranking.

For example, my goal is to show which teams have played the best football through the course of the season. Thus teams that lose still have a chance to move up the board if they played well, and vice versa.

Others might think of the power poll as who should be the most feared going forward, sort of like saying “these are the most dangerous teams right now.” That is what Guru’s list looks like to me.

Your criteria seem to indicate a desire to show what a team has earned for itself, to this point in the season, by weighing what position they have put themselves in for the playoff hunt.

We all supplement our fundamental motivations with adjustments meant to describe a current state, and voila! Power rankings!

Mountains, forest, sea: these render man fierce, but yet do not destroy the man.

It's Only Fair...

I went ahead and made my own Power Rankings because I hate to raise questions without providing solutions. I based mine on team record (losses, really), average final margin (points in favor minus points against divided by games played), and key games (max of two wins and two losses). I tried to make sure that teams would not be ranked below teams that they defeated so long as they had similar records. I was surprised by some of the results and I’d love to have you guys tear them apart! Have at it:

1) Tennessee Titans
2) Buffalo Bills
3) Pittsburgh Steelers
4) New York Giants
5) Denver Broncos
6) Tampa Bay Bucaneers
7) Washington Redskins
8) New England Patriots
9) New York Jets
10) Arizona Cardinals
11) Dallas Cowboys
12) Carolina Panthers
13) Atlanta Falcons
14) Indianapolis Colts

Yeah...

I had to put the Broncos above the Bucs, who are a solid team straight up. I had to put the Chargers below the Dolphins, and they’re not a very good team. Honestly, the thing I hate about my list is the Jags, who have played a ridiculously brutal schedule and survived. Other than that, everything feels fine but not quite right. Go Broncos!

Ouch!!

Us 5th? I don’t think so.

The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.

Sorry for all the confusion. I will make sure to clear things up much better for next week's rankings.

This is my perfectionist part of me that is always looking for ways to make something better. I think I found perfection, but it will be another few weeks before it starts to show. ;-) lol oh something like that…

I take off my Bronco hat once a week to do these rankings...even then I slyly slip the Broncos up a spot or two from

where I honestly think they are. lol Even so, I ranked them 10th, they were actually 11th. No harm right? ;-) heheh

11th is perfect right now!!

Although I don’t think anyone should overlook us anymore—maybe some will.

The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.

I hope he hates all the way to the Super Bowl.

Dr. Z...

I have always enjoyed reading Dr. Z’s articles. However I have found a trend over the years that suggests he has a personal dislike of Denver. There was an article 2 years ago or so he did about Champ (the year Champ made 2 or 3 interceptions in the end zone in as many games) where he said he had always felt Champ was over rated and maybe he would have to rethink that. He has also stated many, many times that he just doesn’t “get that feeling” about Denver. Every year. He has also said how much he dislikes the zone blocking scheme because he feels it is cheap. Denver being the poster boys for the zone scheme…

Again, I like Dr. Z, I just don’t take any stock in his opinion of Denver. I will say however that this week’s rankings made me a little mad considering he has 2 team ahead of us we beat and 5 teams ahead of us who have a worse record. But, whatever…

Yea...like I said, he has no credibility with me anymore.

Well he had your respect at one point

I have never ever like that blowhard. I remember the lead up to SB 21 and he said Elway was overrated. I wish he and the redhead would friggin retire. Heck anyone here could write better articles than that clown

I misspoke. I 'pretended' he had my respect so I could dis him even more.

Much like he pretends to be impartial while dissing the Broncos.
