Injury Update: Bailey to IR, Bailey out for a month
Looks like Boss damaged his knee bad enough to require microfracture surgery in the next couple of days, thus likely sending him to IR for the year. That means he will fulfill his most significant worry coming into the season: he hasn't and never will stay healthy.
The same story from the Post reports that Champ can be expected to miss some time too:
Champ Bailey, who suffered a groin injury in the first half of Monday's game, went for a magnetic resonance imaging exam Tuesday and is expected to miss at least a month and possibly longer.
Rookie Jack Williams, who played in place of Champ Bailey Monday night, is expected to move into the left cornerback position after the team's bye week.
The broncos also still have a roster spot left over from the Shaw suspension, and they recently cleared two spots on their practice squad, by releasing Stephen Harris (DT) and PJ Pope(RB).
I think Woodyard is going to get some playing time, and I bet that is going to make a lot of you guys excited. I know, because i am excited too, but let's keep our feet on the ground here, and realize that Woodyard won't be half as good as Boss was. But I think Woodyard's attitude will lend a spark to the defense while he learns. But I am getting ahead of myself... K2 is another possible starter which would have Nate moving back outside to man Boss' SLB position. Fiddling around with Moss is also a possibility, but don't expect it. He still lines up with a hand in the dirt, so the OLB experiment hasn't come to pass with moss yet.
We need Champ back ASAP, but Williams can use the experience. In the big scheme of things, the loss of Champ for a little while should help, so he needs to take his time and get fully healthy before trying to return.

Will be interesting to see the adjustments
Replacing Champ is not easy, but the decision is pretty simple – JMFW or Paymah.
Boss is a different story. I don’t think Denver will mess with Moss as his play at DE has improved the past few weeks. Based on the fact that he was the extra LB in the 3-4 I think it will be Winborn in base packages. But then I don’t know who the 4th LB in the 3-4 becomes. I think Louis Green was playing there over Niko in the New England game since DJ has been playing more as one of the two inside LB’s in the 3-4. They could move Niko intot he middle in the 3-4 and slide DJ back outside or maybe this will lead to scrapping the 3-4 experiment altogether.

I keep forgetting about Green
And you keep reminding me. :)

In your defense, Green was hurt at the start of the year :)
Will also be interesting to see if they are ready to give Woodyard a shot yet. I assume that Boss’s roster spot will go to our new #4 CB for the next few weeks. They have Josh Bell on the practice squad or they could resign Tyrone Poole or go elsewhere.
Random note from the Pats game. In the first two drives for the Broncos which ended in Hall fumbles, Mike Pittman had 9 carries for 52 yards. After that point (and it was only 6-0 on the scoreboard) he had 11 carries for 36 yards. More interestingly, the first two drives were: pass, 3 consecutive Pittman runs, pass, pass, 4 more Pittman runs, pass, Hall fumble, Pittman run, pass, Pittman run, Hall fumble (meaning Pittman carried 9 of the first 16 plays). But after the second Hall fumble Pittman never touched it on two straight plays and no more than three times in a drive (and Hall never touched it again on offense). The lack of a third RB on the roster was an obvious problem.

so 11 of 16
or 69-31% playcalling balance favoring the run. That is anything except a random note. We were going to establish the run in this game, but fate had a different idea.
HT seems to indicate that we are too aggressive in the playcalling department,a nd have departed from the run.
I indicated that I thought we were worried about our RB depth going into the second half of the season and favored pass over run to keep the backs fresh.
I think the answer lies in the middle, and your numbers there seem to prove it. I think Denver has a very aggressive philosophy on how to dictate the pace and rythym of a game, and that it involves scoring early and scoring fast. I think they do this because they favor the passing strengths of the team, and because they want to alleviate the 60 minute burden on the running game, and reduce the running game to a “cleanup” role for now, in an effort to preserve the depth at the RB position.
Going forward, I think our defense leaves open the question about which offenses we face will be highscorers: at this point they all look like high scorers to us. RB depth and trying to slow the game down a little (being less aggressive on offense) would look pretty good, I think, to both HT and I.

Except
JC hurt his index finger on the first pass play. I think that chnaged the playcalling early. I dont believe that was going to be the goal, especially the way SD killed them in the air

True
but if I was a betting man, i would say the origianl plan was probably pretty close to 50-50 run-pass based on HT’s Chalk Talk before the game.
As the game went on, I think Cutler got better with his throws, especially after the half, when they found out it wasn’t broken. i think he can grit his teeth with the best of them, and all he needed was the assurance that he wasn’t making it worse by fighting through it.
But those accurate middle and deep outs, and most deeper passes were probably struck fromt he playbook for the night after that first play.

Minus the Hall fumbles...
…I wonder if we would have been rewarded by Pittman’s running?

I think we would have been rewarded with Pittman's running
if it weren’t for the fumbles which followed Pittman going out of the game due to being injured. I still don’t know what happened to him but the front page Injury Report shows him as having a neck/rib injury.
Before the first fumble, it sure looked like he injured his ribs. I remember watching him trying to get up but couldn’t sit up and when Kuper tried to help him up, you could tell he was in pain. Of course, with the Brady Lovefest going on, the ESPN idiots didn’t bother to mention what happened to him (even though it was enough of an injury to have to go to commercial).
Before the second fumble it must have been his neck (or that came later) because he took himself out right before Hall fumbled #2.
After that, I think we started playing catch-up and forgot about the way we were advancing the ball using the run with Pittman.

It appears
that this season is exactly what we thought it was: a re-building year. While we can continue to have high hopes, and the Broncos still may make the play-offs, the reality of the situation is that we’re not real continders for any titles this year. This is a good opportunity for the young’uns to get some vital experience, in order to prepare them for a real push in the next year or two.

Bruce, please escort Boss Bailey to the infirmary

Man, I’m going to miss all those injury timeout breaks with Bailey gone now. Who’s gonna step up and fill that role?

What about signing Roosevelt Colvin to replace Boss?
We’ll probably need to pick up another defensive player anyway to make room for his IR-ment and Josh Shaw’s suspension, so why not try to bring in a veteran guy with playoff experience who could be a locker room presence to augment his play on the field? Or, has he regressed enough that this would be a repeat of the Simeon Rice move?

Ransey on IR
According to the DP, Patrick Ramsey will go on the IR because he re-injured his elbow, which he had injured in training camp. Hackney to be signed off the PS
Also, Erik Pears will undergo an appendectomy and be out for “an extended period”.

Let us no forget...
That spurrior himself was not quarterback enough to make the Broncos during training camp of the 77 season… He was cut.

In all fairness to Spurrier
He had been in the NFl since 1967. He played from 1967-75 at SF then he was the QB in 1976 for the Bucs. He was at the end of his career when he came to Denver. He was a long shot to make that Denver 1977 team. Plus the Bucs in 1976 almost got him killed.
Now being a pro coach is 100% different than being college coach. Ramsey was a stretch at #32 when he came out.

Re: Ramsey
I don’t wish injury on anybody, however now that Hackney will be promoted to take his spot, I hope we get rid of Ramsey now. His an absolute joke as a QB. I can’t say one good thing about him.

Injurie bug still here
I am not surprised that Boss will be out for the year because I was a bit leary when I heard about his knee problem when we got him. This gives somebody a shot and a chance to change things up on defense for the better.
Champ on the other hand will really be missed and will hurt since our defense isn’t good. Hopefully Jack WIlliams will take full advantage of the situation and be able to make some plays. We all know from preseason that the ball somehow gets in his hands.
The good news is that all of our injuries on offense will get two weeks to get better and if Champ is out for a month then he will only miss two games. Well, the bye came at just the right time.

Ramsey
I am not a fan of his either, but he knows the system very well. I am not sold on hackney or bringing in someone like Culpepper. This is a very important. Especially knowing the system. Hopefully Denver will never need to use the backup, unless its a mop up duty when the Broncos are up by 40. Never underestimate a back up QB. Look at Dallas right now. Last year back ups started or played significate time over 60 times. Losing Boss is sad, I think he shows promise. Now Jamie Winborn has a shot to shine. Losing Champ is gonna be HUGE. If its 4 weeks at the least thats 3 games. But the saving grace is 2 of the next 3 opponents are not a pass first team. (Miami and Atlanta.) But he is awesome against the run. Well everyone we all wanted Williams to play. In a perfect world he plays awesome and when Champ comes back Bly gets relegated to the nickelback

I like Hackney
He has shown some good leadership skills and has improved his ball skills, will he ever be a starter in the league, no, but I think he can be a good backup. As for the system, then we might as well bring in Simms or call Bradley Van Pelt.

Nope
For a QB that has never ran in Shannys system. Simms is use to Chuckys system and its different than Shannys. As a former QB, its difficult to run a new system right away. Look at how someone as gifted as Favre is having in the Jets system. (granted he should have spent week studying than calling the Lions). That just goes to prove a QB needs to be comfy in a system before he can be good. Thats why it take a QB 3 years to understand and execute Shannys offense good. I am not sold on Hackney. If he was that good why is he still on the practice squad. There are reasons why back ups are back up and PS guys are on the PS

I think Simms would be decent
I think there are three open roster spots. We will probably grab a CB to replace Boss on the roster since we need a 4th CB while Champ is hurt and we already had plenty of LB’s. Hackney will probably be promoted to take Ramsey’s spot. And then I would not be shocked to see Denver use Pears’s slot to sign a third QB. Simms is a pretty decent option. He may not know Shanny’s exact system, but he is known as a pretty intelligent QB who has been around football (and QBs in particular) all his life. I think Simms would pick up the Denver playbook much quicker than Favre has picked up the Jets offense. And Simms played with Kyle Shanahan at Texas so there may be some familiarity there as well.
Semi related, but I wonder if Simms being a lefty has been a strike against him as he tries to find work as a backup. I can understand a team not wanting to have to reverse/adjust their blocking scheme, etc in mid game or mid season (while they would be willing to do that for someone they considered a long term solution)

ehh
Not a Simms fan. remeber watching him a Texas. He wasnt even the best QB on that UT team. he may be a smart guy. But I am not sold on him coming into the season. Now if he is here for all of the OTA’s, training camp and pre-season you are probably correct. But I just wonder why he hasnt been picked up. KC just signed Quinn Gray. Why would Gray be signed before Simms or Culpepper. When teams a putrid as KC dont go after these guys that makes wonder why. There has to be a reason why. Just my 2 cents

well, culpepper has said he is retired now
And I do wonder if the lefty thing is an issue for Simms. I know what you are saying about KC passing, but do we really want to make personnel decisions based on the Chiefs judgement :) No matter what happens, the team is pretty screwed if Cutler and Hackney both go down to injuries.

Brodie Croyle
KC’s current and former starter at QB. I’m guessing that with their selection of Croyle as their started (when he’s not injured) shows the chefs ability to spot QB talent.

Post is already correct
Williams is going off of memory and his notes from when he was here, you know, the ones with the coffee stain and the cream cheese frosting blob in the corner?
Williams came in for Champ against NE and when Bly went out and in the nickel they brought in Paymah. We WILL see more of Paymah, but JMFW is the man.
