Broncos Add Chad Jackson, Announce Several More Moves
The Denver Broncos on Monday announced several roster transactions, including the additions of free-agent wide receiver Chad Jackson and tackle Matt Murphy to their active roster.
Denver also on Monday signed cornerback Josh Bell to its active roster from its practice squad while adding center Greg Eslinger and cornerback Rashod Moulton to its practice squad.
Jackson (6-foot-1, 215 pounds) is a third-year wide receiver who spent his first two professional seasons with New England, which selected him in the second round (36th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft from the University of Florida. He competed in training camp with the Patriots this season but was waived on Aug. 31.
In 14 career games (1 start), Jackson has totaled 13 receptions for 152 yards (11.7 avg.) with three touchdowns along with four rushes for 22 yards (5.5 avg.). He owns five career punt returns for 83 yards (16.6 avg.) and six kickoff returns for 106 yards (17.7 avg.). The wide receiver also has appeared in three career playoff games, returning four kickoffs for 78 yards (19.5 avg.) and adding one special-teams stop.
Jackson was a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award (nation's top receiver) and a first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection as a junior at Florida. He attended Hoover High School in Hoover, Ala., and was born on March 6, 1985.
Murphy (6-foot-5, 264 pounds) is a seventh-year tackle who spent the last two seasons with Buffalo after playing for Houston (2003-05) and Detroit (2002). Selected by the Lions in the seventh round (253rd overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft from the University of Maryland, Murphy has appeared in 28 career games (3 starts) at both the tackle and tight end positions.
Murphy, who started a career-high two games with the Texans in 2005, was inactive for Buffalo's 2008 season opener before the club released him on Sept. 13.
A tight end and defensive end at Maryland, Murphy attended New Haven High School in New Haven, Mich., and was born on Feb. 23, 1980.
Bell (5-foot-11, 177 pounds) is a rookie cornerback who spent the last five weeks on Denver's practice squad after joining the club on Sept. 24. He entered the NFL with the Chargers on May 2 as a college free agent from Baylor University but was waived by San Diego on Aug. 31.
During four seasons at Baylor, Bell totaled 94 career tackles and 12 pass breakups. A first-team all-district selection at Skyline High School in Dallas, Bell was born on Jan. 8, 1985.
Eslinger (6-foot-3, 291 pounds) is a third-year center who begins his second stint with the Broncos, who selected him in the sixth round (198th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft from the University of Minnesota.
He signed with Cleveland's active roster from Denver's practice squad on Nov. 14, 2007, but was inactive for all four games with the Browns. Eslinger finished that season on Houston's practice squad and competed in its 2008 training camp before he was waived on Aug. 30.
A consensus All-American who received the Outland Trophy (nation's best interior lineman) as a senior at Minnesota, Eslinger attended Bismarck High School in Bismarck, N.D., and was born on April 23, 1983.
Moulton (5-foot-11, 184 pounds) is a first-year cornerback who joins the Broncos from Jacksonville, which released him from its practice squad on Sept. 1. He entered the NFL with the Jaguars on May 14, 2007, as a college free agent from Fort Valley State University and spent his entire rookie campaign on the club's practice squad.
Moulton played defensive back, running back and wide receiver at Fort Valley State, where he also returned kickoffs and punts. He posted five interceptions while averaging 7.9 yards (19-151) on punt returns as a senior.
A three-year starter at Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg, Fla., Moulton was born on Nov. 6, 1980.

Oh where oh where is a safety or two in this crop
I am glad to see Eslinger back, hopefully he can stick, Jackson maybe is worth a shot, the others I have no idea who or how long they will be Broncos. Obviously we need some CB with Champ going down, but interesting we didn’t look at bringing in some depth at LB with Boss on the shelf. Maybe that signals a move for Larson back to playing LB.
I will say this, I hope that Torain is the running back I think he is, if he can be the true feature back then that will go a long way to curing some of Denver’s problems. Long sustained drives with no turn-overs and points will help the Defense and allow it to bring pressure to the opposing QB.

One good thing about the Denver draft in the past couple of years
is we didnt select Chad Jackson. He was slotted as a Bronco in a lot of mocks and now we get him for nothing. I am with Broncoman though, where is the safety and aren’t we regretting moving Foxworth now? The defensive problems are at every position other than the one occupied by Champ so it probably doesn’t matter anyway.

I dont think they are regretting Foxworth
he cant even get on the field in Atlanta. But it is telling that no other safety can get promoted. I wonder why.

I dont
we laready have CBs who allow Wr’s to catch the ball in front of them. Plus I would rather have Williams in the line of fire than Foxworth. Williams is the reason Foxworth is gone

Very true on Chad Jackson
I remember him being slotted to Denver’s pick, so we basically get a 2nd rounder for free to see if he can play.

Josh Barrett
Where is Josh Barrett. The guy is like 6’2’’ and 225 lbs. He runs a 4.3 40. He is big, fast and hits like a ton of bricks. There is not way any of our current safeties are any better right now. Our current guys can not tackle. At least is Barrett misses blowing someone up he can get up and run them down. I was really impressed by this kid in the preseason. He was always around the ball. He almost had a couple of picks. I think we should also bring of R Rodgers and put him and Barrett at the 2 Safety spots. We need to see what we have in these guys. If have a gem then we need to draft a safety, among other thing, in the next draft. We can not see what they have when they are sitting at home watching the game on TV. THIS IS A JOKE. Our coaching staff has lost it.

i disagree
There are reasons why Barrett hasnt been promoted. Just because we scream and yell for him here, doesnt mean that he is NFL ready. There are reasons that I am sure the public doesnt know, why he is still on the PS. If he was so good why is he still on the PS? You cant tell me no other team would have tried to sign him if he is ready.

Yes, he got around the ball sometimes in the preseason
But there were also times when he was completely out of position to make any sort of play. What did he do in the Dallas game? Not much. He let one of their receivers (Austin?) blow right by him for what should have been an easy touchdown.
If we brought him up now, he’d be lost and confused. He would constantly be out of position (yes- more even than Lowry and Manuel.) And the constant poor play, combined with the poor play of the defense, would break his psyche. It would probably destroy his career. He’s too young. In 3 years, he could be reminiscent of the late Sean Taylor, but for now he should focus on honing his immense pgysical skills into football greatness.

OMG, Fragile Psyche!
This guy is a football player, either he can play or he can’t, it’s not like starting him is going to ruin him, if anything, hopefully he would learn from his mistakes. The thing is you can’t coach size and speed, both of which Barrett has, if Slowvik is such a great DB coach, then coach this dude up, but I have a hard time with all the we have to bring him along slowly stuff, throw him out there and see how he does, he can’t be worse than what we got. It’s not like the kid has only been playing football for a year, he has been playing for many years, he should understand basic coverage concepts and support techniques by now.
I will agree with bronco fan stuck in SD though, something must be wrong if he isn’t starting. Maybe he is all athlete and no brains, I really don’t know, but I still would at least like to see what he can or can’t do, the guys we have in there have no potential for any upside, they are limited athletically and you are getting what you would expect from them, at least Barret or even Woodyard you could say that you have upside.

I'm not worried about his psyche as I am about his development.
The purpose of the practice squad is to iron out a player’s technique, fundamentals, and overall knowledge of the games. If we threw him to the wolves, he would develop a propensity for bad decision making, and it would most likely plague him for the rest of his career. The kid has incredible alent and I would hate to see it wasted because we were impatient.

And he was raw even in college
he had a long ways to go, even in agreat defensive scheme, or with great defensive teachers. That he is here, in a dysfunctional defensive environement, is all the more reason to be patient. Good points papi.
My one worry is that it has been years since Denver made the Safety position a priority. They may not care about the safeties as a matter of basic football philosophy, and if that is the case, nothing will get better, regardless of the players used. That isn’t to say the defense will always be terrible, just that if you like to watch safeties play, well, Denver probably isn’t the team for you.
Sad, because we used to have some of the best…

AGREED, confidence counts
The mental aspects of the game are more important in many cases than the physical aspects. As they say of the CB position, “you need to have a short memory.” Safety appears to require both a thorough understanding of the game AND a short memory. Emphasis on physical metrics tends to miss the attributes that are truly important for success.

But look at the other rookies we have
Clady – Starting LT the hardest position on the line and usally nobody starts as a rookie lineman in Denver, they didn’t seemed worried about his cofindence.
Royal – Starting WR, a difficult position to learn, especially coming from a college team that ran a completely different offense, not worried about his confidence.
Larsen – Starting FB, he never even played FB until this year, yet we are willing to put him in a difficult role of blitz pick-up and protection of the QB.
So I ask, is it really that hard to play safety as a rookie, Atwater did it, Smith did it, Lynch did it, in fact most of the top safeties did it, so can it really be that hard or is Barrett that dumb?
"Me fail english, that unpossible" - Ralph Wiggum
by Broncoman on Oct 28, 2008 4:22 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
He has good football instincts
but his problem has always been motivation. He doesn’t have the drive of the great players you mentioned, or even of the rookies you listed. Royal is extrememly motivated, as is Larsen. Clady is the most physically gifted and talented LT that denver has probably ever drafted.
Barrett is a guy with motivation issues that got passed up by every team in the league until we pounced with a seventh round flyer. He can develop motivation, and in turn apply that motivation to getting on the field, but I agree with bfsisd here: if he were ready to contribute to what the Broncos plan on doing we would have moved him up by now.
But I will bring up -again- my one caveat in any discussion of Broncos safeties: the Broncos under Shanahan have never prioritized the use of safeties as safeties. We may never know why, or even if that is really the case.

Plus My Biggest Point Is
Our Safeties now are horrible and are not going to get it done. Now with champ out they are going to look even worse. These guys are sorry. They should keep Mcree and Manuel. Cut Lowry and Fox. Bring up Barrett and Rodgers as the back ups. If anyone gets injured then they can step in.
by gnarlybroncodude on Oct 27, 2008 4:13 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
here is my point
Lowry blows we all agree, but there is a reason he hasnt been brought up. He may have HUGE potential but for all the problems the secondary has he is still on the PS.

I can't argue for or against...I am willing to try anything at this point.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Barrett for a few weeks just to see if he is indeed as bad as coaches think he is. I wouldn’t say BAD, but just “not ready” to start.

I wasn't that impressed with him either...
though I see enormous potential…he just has a big learning curve. Some guys just take longer to transition from college to the pros. And remember, Safety has to be able to read and guage what the offense is doing and react to it fairly quickly. I am thinking Shanny doesn’t want any more blown coverages than he already has.

That is true
But there is going to be a lot more blown coverages with Champ out. Our secondary is going to be torn apart without Champ. Really my biggest point is he can not be worse then anything we have now. I do worry though if they bring him up for just a couple of games and then release him someone might claim him off waivers before we can resign him to our PS
by gnarlybroncodude on Oct 27, 2008 5:01 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
that also must play into Shanny's thought processes. Barrett will unlikely escape onto the PS again.

Zappa speaks the truth.
He just isn’t ready to comandeer a defense at the pro level. Remember that, while the linebackers are responsible for making line checks and backer checks, the free safety has to be the one to make sure the guys in the secondary are in the right position. With his inexperience, we’d have even more guys out of position than with Champ out.
Maybe we could bring him up when Champ gets back. That way, he’d only have to cover half the field.

Barrett
The Barrett situation is tricky. You don’t want to bring him up too early, but, it is like the old Buc coach John Mckay said “You don’t learn a thing by sitting on the bench. You might learn to drink Kool-Aid or water or something, but nothing else”. But, when they do bring him up, I get the impression that other Bronco fans love him so much that they will have a keg party when they bring him up from the PS. This guy has been touted as the next Dennis Smith.
By the way, papigrande, you said that the FS has to be keep the secondary in the right position. Wouldn’t Barrett play SS, however?
I just would like to know what was wrong with Hamza. Oh, well, look on the bright side. We didn’t sign that journeyman scrub Chris Crocker.

Reserve/Non-Football Injury list ???
i heard erik pears was placed on this
what is it
by RiG on Oct 27, 2008 10:52 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
It is just like
IR, except that players need to sustain the injury in a non-football related way. The “Non-Football” designation is used to exempt a team from either paying for the treatment of the injury, or from paying the salary of the injured player. There is a unique situation where a player who is out for the year with a NF-I (non-football injury) and who happens to be in the last year of his contract can have his contract ‘tolled.’ I am unfamiliar with the use of the term toll in regards to an NFL contract, but it is a standard term for manufacturing contracts, where the contract specifically indicates that no purchase of materials is required by the contract, such as when someone is transporting a product.
Anyone with info on this aspect of Pears’ case (he is in his final year of his contract, so ‘tolling’ applies to him) might add it here. My best guess is that the Broncos have the right to “purchase” his contract at a better rate than paying him…

by Jeremy Bolander on Oct 28, 2008 5:16 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
A not-so-quick
check of the CBA gains the following: Pears’ contract WILL be tolled, it isn’t an option, as he is in his final contract year. Tolling appears to be a process of suspending the contract, as opposed to normal NF-I procedure, which is to not pay the player during the time of his injury, even though the contract year continues on.
When Pears’ is eligible to return to football (healthy at the beginning of next season), his contract will come off of its ‘toll’ status (during which time he isn’t being paid, but his contract year isn’t counting down either), and will continue on.
But the issue is still murky. It seems that we are getting Pears for an additional year, which seems kind of odd. What time is it on the East Coast? Is MattR up yet?? :)

by Jeremy Bolander on Oct 28, 2008 5:46 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Digging further
it seems that if a contract is tolled then the player will still have the number of full seasons left on his contract at the time the tolling started. How do they define a full season? Why, any season still left on the contract that is over eight games. Assuming Pears was tolled this week (why wouldn’t he be?) that means his contract was tolled with 9 games left, and thus he is eligible to play for a full year next year as a Bronco under his current contract.
Funny how everything seemed to line up there…

to continue the thought...
Pears knew something was up but he couldn’t put his finger on it… The questions from the coaching staff lately were…well…odd. Just yesterday Shanahan had asked him out of the blue if he had ever had his appendix out. Of course, Pears answered, he hadn’t. Shanny gave the slightest hint of a smile, and asked, “Would you like to?”
The uncomfortable pause that followed was perhaps a millisecond too long.
Than Shanny let out an abrupt laugh, indicated he was just joking, and left Pears to his lunch. But Shanny’s eyes flashed as he turned away, and the steely glint within them reflected a kernel of fear deep inside Pears own soul.
What was Shanny planning??

I am up now
I hope you were still awake when you posted that and were not waking up for an early, early morning in Alaska. Unfortunately, my exact quote upon hearing the news about Pears was " I have to admit I am stumped on this one. Is Pears eligible to return to the active roster this year?" I would have to do some reading on the football/non-injury list although what you have written makes sense, kinda. At the same time, it seems a bit weird that they can not pay a player due to a medical illness.
I actually wonder if contract issues have something to do with Barrett still sitting on the practice squad. I am doing this off memory, but I think as long as he is not on the 53 man roster for six games this year he is still practice squad eligible next year. If Shanahan thought Barrett could help this year, I don’t think he would let PS eligibility affect his decision. But if it was a tossup between Barrett and Lowry I can see it being the tiebreaker in the decision to give Lowry the first look.

No Hackney included in this list
Josh Shaw is off the suspension list so one of the new guys (or someone else) must go befire Sunday when Hackney is activated.. I am thinking Josh Bell is safe since he would be the 4th CB on the roster. Chad Johnson’s position is dependent on Stokely’s health. Tackle Matt ‘Guitar’ Murphy is there to replace Pears and could be a casualty if he is not needed but Chad Jackson is. Another possibility is Chad Mustard if Scheffler is healthy. Or there could be a surprise cut like Andre Hall or a DL.

The end of last year was a roller coaster for the roster, and the only thing we really gained from all of it was Nic Clemons, and even that can be disputed some…
