New D-coordinator in San Diego

www.chargers.com/news/headlines/rivera-promoted-to.htm Well the Chargers did it, the fired Ted Cottrell. Replaced him with Ron Rivera. That could be a reactionary move or could be a sign of things to come in the offseason here in SD. I still dont think it will change anything. The Chargers are not getting to the QB, and their secodnary is suspect this year. I wonder how much this has to do with losing Merriman to the injury

How are you today Bfanstinsd ?

Thanks` for the news I really was wondering what happened to this team ? It seems
they completely fell off a cliff like scary fast . They never got started this season at all.
Now they look like panic set in makeing changes to solve something fast .
The AFC west is begging the broncos to win it .The chargers blew recent chances
to steal it away from the broncos . what more motivation do the broncos need .

I really question that move

Cotrell is a good 3-4 d-coordinator, Rivera is a Tampa 2 coordinator, but I agree San Diego production has not meet with their talent level.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!

According to Albery Einstein, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Ted Cotrell did the same things over and over again in San Diego, none of them worked, so he did them some more and expected them to work. Therefore, according to my narrow logic and reasoning, Ted Cotrell is insane, and I do not want an insane person running our defense.

I don't think he would be a good fit in Denver

But we should pick him up

steal his secrets and then fire him.

I don't think that's a factor.

Contrary to popular perception, I don’t believe defensive coordinators should be classified as “3-4” or “4-3” people. The formation is more a prouct of the personnel available than the coaching philosophy. (As an aside, you can run a Tampa 2 out of a 3-4, though not a Phillips out of a 3-4).

I agree that's how it should be

and that would explain why Bates isn’t here anymore. Trying to force your philosophy on personnel that don’t fit it resulted in what happened last year (not that this year is any better) and ended with his quick departure.

I think it would have behooved him to transition to the run-contain system by slowly getting the players he had to work toward that direction and bring in the personnel he needed to get it fully implemented. Monday Morning Quarterbacking says that Shanahan should have required a “transition plan” from Bates to show how he was going to get there from here (I love Monday Morning Quarterbacking!).

I think there were several comments at MHR to the same tune.

Frankly, I can’t imagine a transistion more difficult than going from the universe of “man” and “zone” coverages to using contain lanes. It’s almost like another sport, the differences are so vast.

Can we hire him?

I’m sure we can find something for him to do… Help with the defense… Sell programs… Clean the stadium after games…

br........sd, Funny SD seems to be going through what we are going through---finding a defense.

It will be fun to see who makes the right moves first.

The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.

It's funny because a Charger fan I work with

was giving me crap about our defense. Now I can just tell him to look in the mirror……hahaha

I have only known him for about a couple years

so I can’t really say. However, he is annoying and I really enjoy it when he is quiet after they lose.
