Week 9 NFL Power Rankings

After a Week off, the Power Rankings have returned to Mile High Report.

Here are the Main Stream Media(MSM) Power Rankings around the web this week.  Below that you can find MHR's own Power Rankings for Week 9.  Feel free to discuss and even post your own rankings for this week.

Yahoo! Sports -- Ranked 16th, Two weeks ago 10th

Sporting News -- Ranked 14th, Two weeks ago 8th

ESPN -- Ranked 15th, Last Week 18th

Fox Sports -- Ranked 13th, Last Week 10th

CBS Sportsline -- Ranked 20th, Last Week 15th

Sports Illustrated, Dr. Z -- Ranked 18th, Last Week 18th

Our average ranking is about 16th right now.

NOTE: The total points for the year is how each team is ranked.  If you want to know how each team fared for this week, check the smaller number in the parenthesis beneath the yearly total.  You can also see the trends for each team from a week to week basis.  Because of the break I took on the Bye week, the point totals were combined for the last two weeks.

Re the Eagles – don’t you mean Brian Westbrook?

We admire in the sea’s rages the total lack of reason and justice, the blindness to all but the laws of it’s own nature;
And quite naturally, since similar feelings and desires lurk deep inside our own minds. A wrecking sea is part of what we all dream ourselves to be every night.

Michael Westbrook…why does that name sound familiar?

I'm not exactly sure we should be a spot above the Patriots..

I mean… well, you know.

I’d put us at about #15 right now, but if Shanny can light a fire under our team’s collective asses and get us off to a winning streak, then a top 10 finish (and, most importantly, a division title and a home playoff game) would be in order.

The Patriots look good

I would rank us 12th

look at the point level in paranethesis. The Broncos have just 81 points...compared to the others.

The Broncos actually ranked 18-19th in points over the past two weeks…which is why they get the double down arrow. These are the overall rankings for the entire year, not really based on the week by week basis. But the Broncos are indeed falling hard and fast, it just hasn’t started to show yet.

Point levels?

I have never really paid too much attention to them until now. What are they and how did we get 81?

The point levels are the combined total (minus the high and low) of each score received from the MHR staff contributers.

So for the past two weeks, there were 7-8 totals to combine. So 1st place gets 32 points, last gets 1 point. I take away the high and the low and add up the rest. 81 would work out to about 16 points per vote…which puts the Broncos at about 17th in the overall rankings for the past two weeks. Then I add that 81 points to the yearly total which was an inflated 213 points…meanwhile, the Patriots had a yearly total of only 164 points, but they got a massive 120 point bump to put them just 10 points away from passing us.

I found the slower road adds to the accuracy in the long run. I got tired of seeing wild swings every week and it seems based on pure emotion rather than logic. So now it takes a week or two for a team to fall from grace rather than just one blowout loss. Or two in our case. lol

Well, look at the trends. You will notice that the Patriots are rapidly rising while we are rapidly falling...

by next week the Broncos will NOT be ranked above the Patriots. So long as the Pats win, but even if they lose it will be close.

53---schedule does not get easier.

We are simply going to not drop the ball—we will not give another game away—we are Broncos.

The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.

in a sense you are correct

4 of the next 6 that the Broncos play do have losing records. But the last 3, 2 are division leaders right now. So it is and isnt

YOU GUYS KNOW.......

That NE beat us 41-7 right? And you rank us above them?

Michael Fabiano really knows nothing about football outside of regression analysis and stat extrapolation. If it doesn’t have to do with fantasy football, his opinion is worthless.

by kwool79 on Oct 29, 2008 5:21 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

kwool, please read my comment above about the points system I have devised.

And notice the trends. Denver is falling hard, NE is rising quickly. If you want to know where we ranked Denver THIS week…it was 18th. :)

The above rankings are a year long endeavor.

Zappa I really think our offense will step up

I’m really tired, as are you, of the fumbles and int’s that have killed us. Think of how our offense must feel. They know they need to score points, they know they gave up points the last four games, they will step up.

The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.

POLL:

Would you prefer I go back to WEEK-TO-WEEK rankings? Or do you want me to keep my current YEAR-TO-DATE rankings? It appears that what I am doing might be too confusing…

The only problem with year to date is...

that it does confuse people who are looking for a snapshot of where teams are right now. To get a gauge of where the teams are over the course of a season, one need only look at record. (I also imagine it is more work for you in the current form). In the current model, despite the up and down arrows, one may still get the idea that certain teams are “better” in the eyes of the staff when they actually aren’t. The skew occurs when the participants are choosing the teams based on where the teams are this week, but the methodology for assigning points has a different aim.

A good statistics method (and an easy one) to prevent too much fluctuation would be to just drop the top and bottom scores for each each team.

I am starting to think you might be right....

if anything, my trial and errors this year will be worked out so that next season it will be consistent all year long. I apologize to all for the changes. lol

They beat us in our house, rather convincingly as well.
