The Guru and Friends Predict Week 5
Each year, I have given my thoughts and expertise a run for their money by publicly making my picks for each game every week. To add a twist, the fine contributors of MileHighReport have agreed to do the same, along with my lovely wife, with the winner laying claim to the Title of "Best Game Picker On MHR Until Next Year..." or something like that.
My thanks to Styg50, HoosierTeacher, Zappa, MDierk and Melissa for agreeing to partake in a little bit of fun. Without further ado, the picks --

Steelers have some injury problems and the 49ers match up well against the run deficient Patriots.

I guess I could see it, but I really don't like any NFC West team playing outside their division

I toyed with the idea of picking that upset, but then I realized that Arizona has no backbone.

A few things
It seems as Melissa’s totals are of by 13 games. Could you put the prior weeks records above your guys overall one. Cuz I am curious how you guys ended up last week, especially Styg. I think the Ravens and Ariz are going to win their home games this week. Just a feeling. I feel Ariz is playing at home after spending the past 2 weeks on the least coast. Plus I think the Ravens with their defense and the fact that Tenn will real conservative in their offensive game plan will work towards the Ravens

…was a killer for me to pick. I hated having to pick that one.

intial cap
of the TENvBAL game was 24-10 Tennessee. After factoring in as many of the intangibles as I could think of, I had a score of 16-18 Baltimore. I thought about it for a long time and decided that the home advantage for Baltimore simply isn’t established enough, and that a FG swing in favor of TEN was better than a 50-50 chance. So I am going with 19-18 TEN.
And I am pretty sure I did crappy last week, well below .500. I went into the Sunday night game with a chance to either finish one behind HT or 3 behind, and of course I tanked.
My initial cap of the ARI game was 27-22 BUF, so it is far from a sure BUF win, but I can’t really give ARI much of a homefield advantage right now, and I just don’t think that team has the stones to respond to their east coast losing streak. Also I think that BUF gets pretty good work out of its defense on the road, so I would give them a +2 road advantage, which more than likely cancels out most any other advantage that ARI will bring to the table.
It is still a one score game though, far from certain.

I'd take Baltimore in that one too.
I’m having a vision… Joe Flacco plays efficiently and throws a fourth quarter TD as the Ravens beat the Titans 16-10…
After seeing what Ray Lewis did to Rashard Mendenhall last week, I’d watch out if I were Chris Johnson. Man, the Ravens can play D. To go on the road at Pitt and play that well speaks volumes for what this team can do.
Watch out for Philadelphia-Washington also. Jason Campbell can play.
3-1.

Are you comparing notes?
All too in step… For having six people choose the games there are only four unique opinions and of those only one differs by more than just one team selection. Kudos to the Gu for swinging out away from the pack and choosing the Cards. There are a couple divisional matchups up there… DC vs. Philly and Chi vs. Detroit… After last week we all know that in “sure thing” interdivisional matchups things rarely play out as they should… How can there be such uniformity!? Schenanigans!
Seriously… No cheating off each other next time.

And another thing!
Green Bay has been decimated by injuries! You all picked them to win? What about Aaron Rodgers?! What about Jenkins their DE that’s out?
You have angered the Jezru.

I guess with Rodgers health still up in th air, I figured there would be at least someone going for ATL

Guru told us we could change picks for injuries up until an hour before games.
With Rodgers being a game time decision, I’m guessing he plays. Jenkins is a loss, but the overall defense still looks effective to me.

I neither read other peoples picks...
…nor do I send mine to anyone but Guru. I think each of us makes our own decisions as best we can, and independent of each other. This week was easier to pick than most.

Looks like...
You guys seem to all be in sync this week. I do think it is funny though how we would never thought that the 49ers would beat the Pats this decade. Here we are now and I think the niners will win lol.

I need some fantasy advice.
I’m currently carrying 3 QB’s. I drafted Ben Roethlisberger to be my number one guy, but with the emergence of Aaron Rodgers, I’ve been sitting him since week 2 and loving it. Now both are questionable with shoulder injuries, and seeing as you use your shoulder to throw…..
Basically what I’m asking is if anyone knows how serious their injuries are. Ben’s had his for a couple of weeks and been fine, but Rodgers probably isn’t as tough (who is?) and the injury might have a different effect on him.
I was looking through the names of available QB’s and one of the names that jumped out at me was Brian Griese, mostly of course because he’s playing us. I need to know, should I start him even if Rodgers or Roethlisberger can go? What if only one of them is hurt? At this point I’m leaning towards starting Griese after seeing what Russell, Rivers, Brees, and Huard have done to our secondary (each had at least a TD, and only Rivers threw a pick— holy crap, we only have one pick all year long?! Boo!!) but I have a bad feeling about it…
Anyone out there want to help me? Besides Zappa.. I don’t accept “advice” from division rivals.
3-1.

I would start Griese. lol
If not him, then Rodgers against Atlanta.

Dammit I said NOT you.
But I will accet your advice and not start Roethlisberger, whatever happens. Maybe I can package him with Jamal Lewis and see if anybody jumps…
3-1.

I would cut roethlisberger
and also rodgers. Then just wait a while and think it over, take a couple of days to scan the waiver wires…

I was thinking about cutting Roethlisberger
but not Rodgers. He’s been amazing up until he got hurt. The thing about our league, though, is that there’s no one on the wires that’s any good, besides Griese, and he throws too many picks to be a reliable option to start every week… I guess I’ll carry three until I decide whoch one’s the best… lol. Rodgers at least has the best receivers by far.
3-1.

Rogers/Roethlisberger
Rogers has a dislocated or sprained shoulder and has only been ablt to toss a few tennis balls this week. If he plays, I doubt he’ll be effective. Ben had to have an injection in his shoulder on Wednesday or Thursday. Steelers lost a starting guard, Simmons, for the year (from a really bad O line) and they are down to their 4th RB. Ben’s gonna get killed.

Thanks... I'll trade him to Zappa. HEH.
I guess I’ll keep Rodgers/ Griese, with Griese as my indefinite starter until Rodgers gets healthy. Thanks!

Of course you will, your starting QB is Derek Anderson.

Don't Cut Either
At this point it might be a mistake. If either makes a comback both of which are likely you will regret it. Start Rodgers it is less serious. But he is still a game time decsion.

My Picks.
Just for fun: CHI, SD, WAS, TEN, ATL, NYG, CAR, IND, DAL, BUF, NE, DEN, JAX and MIN. Maybe I’m a bit too upset minded, but it’s been a wacky season. Go Broncos!

The biggest problem I see---is that none of you seem to accept that we have a bad team..............
I don’t like it any more than you—but I am very nervouse this game—in fact I am in doubt (big-time). I guess I come from the old school when defense is what made each why it happened. We are at home (such an advantage) I hope Cutler, Brandon, Royal, and our defense step up. We will not win this game if all aspects of our positives do not show up.
The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.

I will not pick against Denver until we face Favre.
You need to take a vacation in La La Land Mike…I too started to have doubts, but it feels so much better to wrap yourself in a nice warm and cozy Bronco only blanket!

you give NY
way too much credit. Granted denvers defense sucks right now but it is better than Ny’s. Favre is so effing overrated its not even funny. If he is soooooooooooooooooo good why couldnt he do more against SD’s defense? Nobody has answered that, instead are sucking up to that piece of crap. I hope Denver goes in and beats them 50-7

I Wouldn't Say "Bad"...
I know I’ve been pretty negative and pessamistic lately (perhaps a reaction to what I feel is an overly optimistic majority) so I’m glad I can be on this side of that fence for one. We’re a flawed team, perhaps fatally so, but we’re dangerous and should be on the right side of .500 when it’s all said and done. I’m nervous about the game against the Bucs as well, but I think we can win and, even if we don’t, we’ll still be in good shape overall. I thought we’d be onyl a notch above or below .500 after five games, so we’re right on track at worst in my book. Go Broncos!
