The 30 front

I thought the use of the 30 front last week was garbage, and the Broncos got away from it quickly.  Today, however, it worked very well, and they used it a lot.  On the one hand the Broncos have the wrong kind of personnel for a 3-4 look.  The linebackers and Elvis Dumervil are smaller than you'd like for it, and Dewayne Robertson is not really a NT, which is why we got him for a bag of footballs from the Jets.  On the other hand, it's undoubtedly easier to find 4 good LBs on the Broncos than it is to find 4 good D-Linemen.

For one thing, Dumervil seems to be back.  He dominated Jeremy Trueblood today.  The LBs and Safeties also tackled much better today.  The soundness of the defense and the patience of the offense combined to win today.  I'm very pleased with what I saw.

offense and defense

looked like two sides of the same coin, instead of competing currencies this week. Very satisfying victory.

We did.

We also played 4-3. In both instances we used a lot of zone blitzing. I’ll be watching to see if the zone blitz is what Slowik was easing the team into all of this time.

About that blitz from Champ

I saw some comments that thought the blitz from Champ that knocked Greise out was a planned blitz. I don’t think so. When you watch the replay, Champ was watching for coverage, he started to move to his right, but when he saw Greise looking back to the left he just took off toward him. It was delayed, and so the Tampa O-line never picked him up. So credit Champ for the speed and the smarts to get that hit, but I don’t believe it was a blitz called by Slowik.

I could be wrong...

…but I’m guessing the play was called. It would be very unusual for a CB to be cleared to blitz on his own intitiatve, even at the pro level. Such a move would open up the defense terribly to good scheming by an offensive coordinator.

What may have happened is that he had a “broken read”, where he’s assigned a certain responsibilty until he sees something that gives him the go ahead to make the blitz (not to be confused with a “broken play”, which is when a play goes bad and a player has a fall back assignment. “Broken read” sounds like a negative thing because of the word broken, but it’s just another technique used by coordinators. Sometimes also called a “fall-back read”).

Still, I imagine the intitial move that Bailey made was to ensure that one of the RBs (the HB or the FB) pivoted to pick up Bly’s blitz. With Bailey being th faster of the two, Bly would have been set up to force the pass block, while Bailey went for the principal (the QB). My guess is that this was the case, and not a broken read.

But I could be wrong too. I’ve obviously never coached at the pro level. It just seems hard to believe that a player could move from a man or zone coverage on his own initiative without the risk of being marked by an offensive coordinator for a set-up.

Don't forget about ST.

They kept things in check and Prater nailed another 50+ yard FG.

Here is a quote from Gruden on our ST.

he just shook his head and laughed when Prater kicked the 55 yarder with 20 yards to spare!

I feel

That the Bronco defense showed up. Last week it was like they didnt care, thinking they would dominate KC just by showing up. It was nice to see the defense playing aggresive and good. DJ is a beast. 11 tackles. I am so glad Denver has him locked up.
