Moss may play linebacker!

Strangely enough I had this same conversation with someone before the Tampa Game--I think it was Denvejhawk--I think.

I got this from the Denver post--and couldn't agree more with the move!

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan on Monday said that defensive end Jarvis Moss, the team's first-round draft pick in 2007, could play at outside linebacker.

"He's right there in the 240 range and he still has his speed," Shanahan said. "You may see him some as a defensive end and some as an outside linebacker, so we've got the abilities to do some things with Jarvis that we haven't done in the past."

Moss has been a healthy scratch in three of the Broncos' five games this season, including Sunday's win against Tampa. He does not fit as well into the 3-4 scheme the team has used at times in the past few games.

Moss, officially listed at 265 pounds, played in six games in 2007 before breaking his right leg. He has one career sack.

Sounds like Patrick Chuchura (sp?)

Basically a LB/DE tweener more fit for a 3-4 scheme, which may be interesting idea except I don’t think we have the D lineman to fit the scheme, basically the reason Ekuban and Robertson are here is because they aren’t 3-4 lineman.

Maybe not.

Robertson was playing a two gap 3-4 NT for the NYJs, but could play a one gap NT for a zone blitz in Denver. Ekuban is more of a run stuffer, and could fit in well. (His high sack rate may be more of a credit to his ability to get through the OL as opposed to any kind of speed and agility).

Terrell Suggs of Baltimore. Really, there are a lot of player who do this… not very many get attention for it though. I believe many Cowboys OLBs also play DE and vice-versa

Crowder was saying during preseason that he’d never learned so much about pass rushing until he started listening to Ek. Here’s hoping that he was listening, but apparently Ek really knows a great deal about it.

I believe we were talking about this as it related to Matt Roth’s move that was so often talked about during the Chargers v. Dolphins game.

And it was about Miami’s Matt Roth—that guy was an animal in the SD Miami game—I wonder if Moss has some ‘animal’ in him.?

It seems to me that we are trans-muting into a 3-4 defense.

Another sign of Denver moving towards a zone blitz system?

It’s adding up folks. The more I look at it, the more it looks like Slowik has been slowly bringing the defense along all of this time.

So now we like him? I'm so confused...

Lol, I have to agree. We have a lot of young players and if they can play with the same high-energy and trust they did on Sunday, we will go places.

However, and I hate to be negative, we have to be CONSISTENT. Playing good D 2 out of 5 weeks is not good enough. I want to make it hard for the opposing offense every single week. IHowever, I do think we took some huge strides last week against the Bucs.

Lets keep in mind the changes

and that it takes time to gel. We have 3 players resuming their starting roles from last season: DOOM, Champ, and Bly. Everybody else is either new, back from injury, or playing at a different position. On top of that, we’ve had 3 defensive coordinators and 3(.5?) schemes over the past 3 years. I don’t think you can have much more turnover than that. So lets bear in mind that the defense has to learn how to play together and we shouldn’t have expected them to come out of the gates playing like a well oiled machine.

I am excited with the progress they showed against Tampa and look forward to their continued improvement. I’m also glad to see that Slowik CAN scheme and appears to have been keeping things simple to help the players develop communication and trust. Now that we are starting to see our D look like it’s the real deal, I’m excited with where they go from here. I also think it’s real cool that Slowik is adjusting the D to fit the players, the total opposite of what Bates did.

I just thought of something!!

I’m really proud of myself :P

WHAT IF SLOWIK IS INVENTING A WHLOE NEW TYPE OF DEFENSE!!!! Like the “46” defense of the ’85 Bears or the “Tampa 2” of the ’02 Bucs! We could be witnessing a whole new pseudo 3-4 zone blitz defense with emphasis on stopping the run… for the first time ever!!!!

Unless, of course, someone has already thought of that.

Sorry Mike.

What we saw Sunday looked a lot like a zone blitz to me. I’m thinking we’ve been playing kind of vanilla to ease the team into the system. Still, you get an A+ for the comment that Slowik is easing us into (what is perhaps) a zone blitz.

The show blitz

Honestly, the show blitz system of Coyer was the most beautiful—if I may be permitted that word—defense I have ever seen. It was very eloquent, a tempo all its own and very obvious to the untrained eye. As the game went on it stepped up in intensity until it was at a crescendo.

Too bad Coyer couldn’t keep it going with adjustments…. perhaps he was just getting too old? Not to insult the man, but a certain level of invigoration and resltess energy is probably required to maintain oneself in such a high state of focus all the time… Still, he could have assigned adjustment duties to specific position coaches…

My thinking

Is Shanny cut him loose to early. Denver had injuries at the end of 2006. Plus losing Wilson didnt help. My thinking is if they would have kept Coyer and maybe had Slo start to gradually take over the defense, IMO, would not have regressed as it has.

Coyer was the most surprising D-Coord. that we have cut in recent years, that is for sure….

There's a difference.

There are zone blitz plays (every team has them in the playbook) and the actual zone blitz system. I am refering to the latter.

HT I really didn't think about it--but you are right.

If we do go more to a 3-4, with a zone blitz, with Moss as a line backer—do you think he can make the transition?

by Mike Clark on Oct 7, 2008 8:27 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't know.

I’m not a fan of tweaking DEs and OLBs, but it happens and when it works well it works well. I have no idea if Moss can make the adjustment. (BTW, the transition to DE is easier than to OLB).

WOW looks good to me! Unfortunately Robertson wanted out of New York because he....

didn’t fit well as the NT in a 3-4 defense. I think Shanny brought in Robertson to sure up our 4-3 defense until Slowik transformed us into something different.

Robertson didn't fit into the Jets 2 gap 3-4 (Fairbanks-Bullough System).

He could still play in a Phillips or a (one gap version) of the Zone Blitz.

I should have Ekuban and Elvis switched, Ekuban’s the better run stopper for a LE. Why do you want to put Elvis at linebacker, though? Or DJ as a down lineman?

I don't know about DRob at NT

Peterson had a pretty good game at NT against Tampa so maybe he would be better there.

I also think that DOOM is better on the line. It is intriguing to see how he would blow up the poor sap playing Tackle if he had a 3 yard running start!

Robertson can play a 1-technique...

and he and Thomas both basically do right now, in the 40 front, but he struggles a bit trying to two-gap straight over a center. If he is one-gapping, he is fine.

Moss and Roth

I mentioned this in a different thread, but Roth was also an undersized DE that never fit due to the dreaded tweener issue. Miami had the prescience to see that he would be a great 3-4 LB. Presto! He spent the day making Rivers life miserable and brushed LT aside like a bad snowflake. I’m not sure that Moss can be that good – his issues with strength concern me. But still – we could use another big, fast LB. It’s a great idea.

As to the birth of a new scheme – I hope that’s true. It’s been coming for a while, and our personnel is unique. HT pointed out in his great discourse on the Modern 3-4 Defense something to the effect that each DC should be scheming for his personnel (I’m paraphrasing, but I think that’s about right) rather than some etched in stone idea. Slowik has a great opportunity and some fine players to work with.

The monster lineup above – Moss, DJ, Boss, Doom at LB – is one option, although I wouldn’t move Doom – he’s happy and very effective where he is and we can and will rotate players (I saw Peterson do some damage this game and it’s nice to see). Our coverage LBs include Woodyard, and Winborn is playing his heart out. Depth is a great thing!

I have often wondered how well Moss would fit into the 3-4 system AS a LB rather than a DE...

he has a pass rushing ability that could be utilized well from the LB position and his size makes it possible for him to play in coverage as well. Slowik needs to get on the ball and get Moss’ learning curve up to speed on the LB position. I’d rather have him play LB than play for another team.

Scones are breadier than sopapillas, but very similar otherwise.

And you have to be careful; scones in the Colorado area (and probably most of the U.S.) are as Mike described. However, scones in England are quite different. They’re heavier and often filled with something like fruit – kind of a dry pastry/biscuity type of thing.

And yes, now you two have me quite hungry for a scone. Either kind!

Moss has fast-twitch explosiveness...

and good short-area speed. He needs to be going forward to be effective, so you’d really only use him as a pass-rusher at linebacker. I could see him being used like the Giants use Mathias Kiwanuka.

One problem with Moss though

Granted he has very good strait line speed, but to me a LB has to be good at change in direction and being able to take on blockers, neither of which I would say Moss has right now, to me it just seems like Denver is looking at him physically and saying, OK you are too small to be lined up in a three point lets move you to LB because that is what your body type is, to me there is a lot more to it than simply changing position, LB takes instincts and for someone who has never played it, there would be a steep learning curve, basically you would be starting from square one again and wasting the season one him since he will have to learn alot of different responsibilities on coverage and run support.

by 53guys on Oct 7, 2008 6:38 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The conversation started referencing Matt Roth of the Dolphins and...

his switch to linebacker…if you watched that game he was used primarily as and end/backer that would blitz or play a zone defense so providing coverage in zone blitz coverage. Moss if in this position wouldn’t necessarily be lining up as a traditional linebacker so I think your concerns could be addressed.

Was the orginal LT much more than a blitzer?

Not to compare Moss to LT, but as I remember it, LT was basically an animal at blitzing, but was he still competent in coverage?

Could we potentially have the next Lawrence Taylor?

by DesertBroncoFan on Oct 7, 2008 8:55 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's a big stretch

LT was one physcially stronger than Moss, he basically could run around a blocker or over him, you watched the tape of him and basically they needed either a very gifted LT (which wasn’t a premium back in the day) or two blockers, problem is Moss is not that strong and once he is engaged he can’t break free, in addition, LT played well in space and had incredible instincts of where the play was going, neither of which I would attribute to Moss.

by Broncoman on Oct 7, 2008 11:09 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree that it's a stretch

but the real question I had was whether LT was any good in coverage. Everyone knows that he was a lights out blitzer, but I don’t recall much talk about his coverage skills.

by DesertBroncoFan on Oct 7, 2008 11:53 AM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree that's quite the stretch.

I remember onw play where LT was getting blocked by a tackle, and he basically picked him up and threw him out of the way and then sacked the quarterback, forcing a fumble. I dunno if Jarvis could do that. LT was all right in coverage, I believe. But he didn’t have to be. I mean, he’s LT, he can do pretty much whatever he wants.

4-1.

Interesting video footage in locker room after the Tampa game....

I saw a WHOLE defensive team that was COMPLETELY behind DC Bob Slowik. They even handed him the game ball.
I REALLY like the comment that perhaps he is nursing this team thru.
Hawk, great comments, and HT, as normal, great input.
A question for you, from all this reading it looks like we HAVE the personnel for the one gap 3-4 hybrid style defense. It seems to me that this would actually play to the strengths of Thomas and Robertson, and open up opportunities particularly for guys like Boss Bailey and Jarvis Moss at OLB. Do you see it this way?
There is NO way I am giving up on Jarvis Moss. He is a player and an athlete and we have to learn how to use him.
The defense looked GREAT on the weekend, with less assignment mistakes and some passion. I am liking where we are heading.
Once again, the “experts” say it was a better perormanc by us but that Tampa has no offense (yeah…what ever) but I would rather listen to the knowledgable experts on this site.
Kudos to everyone and GREAT GREAT post Mike Clark!

Hang tough with Moss

The naysayers have valid points and can’t be dismissed out of hand, but know you are in good company on Moss! He may be the rawest player to ever enter the NFL. I say that in total seriousness, too.

Bringing up an old argument

The whole situation with Moss and even Crowder raises the argument for consistency at the coordinator level. These guys were drafted as Bates-type players and now they don’t necessarily fit the new scheme. While Slowik appears to be showing encouraging signs that he can adapt his system to fit the players, the Broncos need to stick with him long enough to get and establish players that fit the mold he likes….. even through the growing pains.

Or so I'm told.

by MN Bronco on Oct 7, 2008 8:33 AM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed

great point, but unfortunately I think the biggest problem with the Bate’s experiment is going to be the amount of time it takes to filter back to a more Bronco-ish set of players. Slo will adapt a scheme to fit this mongrel group, but the guys they will be drafting and signing will force us to adapt that scheme as well, and probably again, another time after that.

Lets hope that Slo is feeling particularly creative for the next several years! :)

better learn quick.

He needs to if he wants to stay on the field. Mixing it up would confuse a lot of teams left on the schedule.

by precisiontint on Oct 7, 2008 8:34 AM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think Moss will fit this scheme great....

Being a tweener…i think this new scheme will be great for him.
It seems to me we are moving to a fast paced 3-4 scheme that brings pressure from the OLB’s behind the pressure of the front 3.
Once Moss matures, he will be hard to handle.
I totally agree with MN….we need to stick it out with Slowik……he has the full support of his squad and they know better than us!

by boydy2669 on Oct 7, 2008 9:28 AM MDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Slowik

I love that way the players are behind Slowik. I knew that they wanted him over Bates last year and despite some assignment/communication problems early, they are playing their hearts out for him. Passion can make a good ball team great.

Interesting reading this thread there suddenly seems to be a lot of optimism regarding the D...my question is...

If we in fact make a switch like this in scheme…what is our biggest draft need…still MLB or maybe are we more focused at the safety position???

If we have another draft like we had this year...

We can get all those guys all at once!!

I think our biggest need is at safety. I like William Moore better than anyone else in college right now, and I would love to see him in the orange and blue. I’d also like more D-linemen (never can have enough of those) and possibly a replacement MLB if Webster stays inconsistent. Here’s my mock draft (trades are not taken into account, except the one we use to move up and get Moore)

1- William Moore S Missouri
2- DT
3- LB
4- DL
5 and beyond- whoever we have rated highest

4-1.

by papigrande on Oct 7, 2008 2:26 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Moore would certainly fit the bill as hard hitting safety...

just curious and I don’t mean this as a slight but is he somewhat responsible for the pass coverage woes early in your eason or does the blame lie elsewhere.

I think depth on the D-line

For us to switch to a 3-4 we need a dominate NT, those are hard to find, we also need some more stout DE, and I still think a hard hitting safety would be nice. In addition to depth at LB

I haven't seen tape yet

but he looks like a 2 gapper. Not saying we wouldn’t be interested, but it doesn’t complement the rest of the Dline.

Also, I am unfamiliar with all the rules regarding eligibility, but won’t he be ineligible for the draft until 2010? Or does he have the option of declaring, despite only one full year so far, with one more to come?

This is a 100% example of a 2 gapper.

Cody is a superhuman beast in terms of height and weight. With pro level conditioning, this guy could dominate on the DL (easily demanding triple teams). For every advantage in football, there is a disadvantage. Cody would very likely play few downs. His endurance would be low, and he would be targeted by no huddle offenses.

Still, if dominant enough, a team could take him and “build the defense around a player”. He would be hard to pass up unless the pro level scouts know something we don’t.

Terrance Cody...

He’s the Nose Tackle for Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide. This guy is HUGE!!! If you get a chance to watch Alabama at all this year check him out…you can’t miss him. It’s somewhat comical because running up the middle is virtually a non option with him in there and he typically draws a double team and 9.9 times out of 10 the two guys double teaming him are on roller skates moving backwards…he’s just a man all around…Think Gilbert Brown but maybe bigger.

As long as they can keep this guy in shape then I am fine with it

I think you take a risk anytime you get one of these big guys that can eat themselves out of the NFL (Gilbert Brown, Sam Adams, Ted Washington, Shaun Rogers, William Perry), but you really can’t coach size, speed, and natural strength, I think it just takes a good contract so they know they have to keep themeselves in shape and coaching to keep them motivated, and then you have a monster.

moss may move again

after the lb experiment, back outside-the organization! sorry, had to do it. this reeks of the move to wr by deltha o’neal. remember that? he is not built for a 3-4 ‘backer, and this d in general isn’t a 3-4, either. i doubt you’re going to see it much, outside of the continually frustrating 3-man rush alignment that always yields a first down, anyway. this team runs a 4-3/4-4 on early/running downs, so i really don’t know where all the 3-4 talk is coming from, outside of the pass-rush/passing downs. a weak d-line doesn’t make the 3-4 a good option to compensate for it, with lighter/faster players. don’t like it, not with these guys

Sources in Denver aren’t buying into the Broncos’ public flirtation with moving DE Jarvis Moss to outside linebacker. Moss has been a major disappointment since the team spent its first-round pick, 17th overall, on the Florida product in 2007, and close observers are skeptical that the coaching staff is serious about a position change. The Broncos are happy with their top four linebackers, and Moss, who missed 10 games last season after he broke his shin, can’t even be counted amongst the squad’s top seven defensive linemen, we hear. He hasn’t even suited up in three of Denver’s five games during a period in which the team has been starved for an improved pass rush. Coaches must not have seen enough from Moss to even give him a chance. Moss is built more like a linebacker than a defensive end, but he doesn’t seem to fit at either position.
