Injuries at WORST possible time....LOOK FOR A VERY CREATIVE GAME PLAN FROM BRONCOS!!!!
The injuries to Eddie Royal, Tony Scheffler and Selvin Young could not come at a worse possible time for the offense of the Broncos.
We are coming into a game that once again, has "BEWARE" written all over it.
The Jags have been very susceptible against the pass, being banged up in the secondary with Nelson and Florence not predicted to start,
If Eddie Royal and Tony Scheffler were fit, we would have had the chance to run up the score quickly, with enough in our running game to take it out.
BUT....with ER and TS likely out, we now have to rely on Nate Jackson (who I like but has NEVER put up any numbers to make me think he will have an effect like TS) and Darrell Jackson (who is a proven #2 but who is till limited at practice with his calf injury and only 50/50 to play).
This could leave us with Brandon Stokley as our #2 which worries me as he will take punishment and we need him for the season, and sees the worlds shakiest player, Glenn Martinez as our #3. Nate Jackson and Dan Graham at TE. This makes easy game planning for the Jags, even with a dinged up DB corps. Double team Marshall, play Stokley in front of you and force Jay Cutler to beat you with short passes to the TE's and Glenn Martinez.
This would mean we now have to rely on the run game. No worries, with Selvin Young and Michael Pittman. Wait, Selvin is injured. Even if he goes, he will not be 100%.
I dont see Andre Hall scaring anyone. He is pretty ineffective and a a good ST player at best. This will then seeing us need big plays from 33 year old Pittman. he can do it, but do we want to risk him for the rest of the season? How much of a load can ne carry?
I would be stoked to hear your guys solutions and game plans for this weekend with the above scenarios.
I have some thoughts:
Look for Shanahan to activate Spencer Larsen AND Peyton Hillis. I think Peyton will see some time at RB, and some packages will be created to use his skills out of the back field as a catcher. Michael Pittman will be used in a rotation with Andre Hall, and I actually see him and Hillis getting more touches than Andre Hall.
Look for Daniel Graham to have more of a role in the passing game. I can foresee him and Chad Mustard in on "running" plays and him being the recipient of some designed passes from Jay Cutler. many of us forget that Graham is a good athlete, fairly quick and a good receiver.
By employing the above schemes, it will put the Jags D on the backfoot, and will open up some opportunities later in the game for Brandon Stokley and Brandon Marshall.
I am looking for a VERY creative game plan from Mr Shanahan and Mr Bates.
Lets see how good our offense really is as we will need some great schemes to get it done this week on offense.
Hit me back with your thoughts!!!!!

Two Words.
Brandon Marshall. I’m sure he’ll once again be the focal point of our offense like he was against San Diego. I wonder how he’ll fare against Rasheen Mathis, who I believe is one of the more underrated corners in the league, but I fully expect Marshall to get a ton of looks and make his fair share of plays.
Bottomline, our defense will have to step up once against like it did against Tampa and, more importantly perhaps, the special teams will have to be just as special.

I think a surprise is coming..................
First off, we don’t know yet how much the current injuries will affect Young, Scheff, and Royal. One or all could still be available. I don’t see Pittman as a workhorse at his age, however for him to get 15 carries this game might not be a bad thing as his tough running style will be necessary against the physical Jag D. That being said, the Jag’s have been susceptible to the run this year, so our running game may be able to get some good things done. If that is the case, we may be able to throw it down field if the Jag’s start keying on the run. If we can slow down their vaunted running game, we will be in good shape. I don’t think Gerrard is good enough to beat us. As far as the offensive game plan, I am interested to see what Shanny and Bates come up with. It is my understanding that Hillis was not injured but attending a funeral last week so he should be back for the Jag’s. I like our chances in this game.
The player who thinks he can and the player who knows he can are two different players, which one are you???

I think Hillis could be big in this game...
Peyton Hillis gives us so many attacking options: as a RB, as an H Back, as a TE in certain looks and as a catching FB/RB.
That kid will come up big for us before the season is done.
He already has when he took the dump off pass from Jay Cutler for 14 yards when we were on our own 1…..thats the type of play he brings to the table.
Thanks Broncofan.

Coach Bates
has been able to show creativity so far this season. From shootouts to dumpoffs. I am All Ready!

Mustard signing signals more emphasis on the run.
Also, our defense will need some rest, as the Jags will have some time possession drives, so it is important our offense also possess the ball, and of course score. Pittman and Stokely will be big again in the move the chains plays, and Marshall will be big in the red zone.

Don't underestimate Hall
I am a big fan of Andre Hall’s. He is a small, compact, bowling-ball type runner with speed to boot. He makes quick cuts and then gets downhill. Pittman will be used but I honestly don’t think he will have a big game as he played his heart out last week and the Jags are a very physical team. Speed is what is needed and, with young hurt, Hall is not only our best option for speed, but also a very good option. He also runs very hard and pushes for the extra yard on every touch.
That being said, I think we will see alot of quick hits to Stokely and Marshall as well as a TE. Also look for RBs getting the dump off out of the backfield as well as quite a few screens. Once the Jags start moving in towards the line to stop the run and dump offs, expect the mis-direction bootlegs with stokely in the middle, the TE towards the sideline and BMarsh going deep on the double moves. Mathis is a great CB who also has some size (6’1" 190) but BMarsh has exceptional size and is one of the best route runners in the game and will get Mathis on the double move atleast twice in this game.

Keep your mind open
to Pittman having a big game against the Jags. Signs are pointing to increased early reps for him, and the Jags have been dismal against the run.
If Selvin is a no go, I think Hall provides the best breakaway threat, if we can just soften up the Jags a little bit first…

I agree again styg50
I know everyone is worried about Pittman’s age. As I’ve suggested before, he may be an 11 yr vet but, with him being a part-timer his whole career, he is more like a 7 yr vet with regard to the amount of hits he has taken. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was faster than Hall. I may be wrong there, but he definately is more physical and has that fiery attitude that this team needs. Pittman said himself that he wants more carries but that he won’t go to Sahnny to ask for them because he is a team guy. Give him 15-20 carries and spell him with Hall on every third series. He will wear the Jags down and make them susceptible to Marshall all over the field.
Playoff bound!

Don't misunderstand my opinion of Pittman
I think Pittman has really surprised many Denver fans, myself included, with how strong he has come on since joining in the offseason. He has been a great asset to the team. I just remember him being much more of a grind-it-out style back rather then an electrifying back like I think Hall can be. I lived in Tampa for 3 years and so I have had the chance to see both backs play (Pittman in Tampa and Hall in USF where he was a hero).

BTW...
I agree we should give Hall a look.
Let’s not forget his performance against Chicago last year when he replace an injured Young. He runs with alot of moxy (seems to be the word of the week).

I don't think we should increase Pittman's reps...
I think he is most effective exactly how we’re using him.
I’m also worried that an older player is going to be injury prone if we start giving him too many touches.
If we need more power running on 1st and 2nd downs I think the Larsen/Hillis backfield might be an interesting option.
GO BRONCOS!!!

Royal should be good to go
From what I understand, it was an ankle sprain. It could limit production, but it sounds like Royal will play.
Quick Stats: Jacksonville is ranked: 26th in total Offense / 21st in total Defense
I’d like to address the Denver D in this game. I remember a few weeks ago, the O-Line of the Jags was down to one starter. Thus far the Jags have allowed 13 sacks and Denver only 2 for the season. (Wow, whens the last time the Denver O-line held against so few sacks) While the Jags are the 8th worst in the League, Denver is tied with Tennessee with the fewest sacks allowed.
On Defense, Denver has made 9 sacks, and the Jags 8 sacks for the season. Denver wins in the trenches on both sides of the ball when looking at sacks. I have no stats for “hurry ups” and “pressure”.
So to me the “armchair QB”, I believe Denver will be able to take advantage in pressuring Garrard. Garrard has only thrown for 3 td’s and 4 int’s all season, and with a weaker O-line, their running game is suffering.
My take is look for Denver to have a good game on both sides of the ball.

Thus far the Jags have allowed 13 sacks and Denver only21 for the season.
Fixed. :)

Sacks
And I think that Garrard is one tough man to get to the ground. This number could be worse.

Solid thinking. I was musing over the Larsen/Hillis thing this am – You guys know that I’m a big fan of both. I saw Larsen just level someone (lousy TV – didn’t get the number) on one of Pittman’s runs and realized that if Hillis, as a solid receiver who can block well, loses his job to a man whose calling card has been monster hits on ST, we have the best tandem as FB that I can recall in the history of the Broncos. Firstfan and a few others can correct me here, but I don’t recall two players this kind of talent simultaneously at that position. Big kudos to Shanahan and the Goodmans on this.

I agree Hillis and Graham will play bigger factors this week in the passing game
I would also look for some more screen passes to Pittman in order to limit the pass rush but also to force the sfeties up, and then look for depper balls to Marshall and Stokely.

I think
That Stokley is gonna have a HUGE game. Maybe Dlax also. Cuz I have heard that Royal could be out up to 2 weeks. IMO I would rather sit Eddie until after the bye so the Broncos can have him good for the end of the season. I saw Pitt abuse the Jax secondary so I feel good about Denver abusing them. Plus Cutler is a better QB than Big Ben (i am sooooo biased) and Denver does a better OL

I thing Cutler is better than BenBerger too!
Ben holds the ball way too long (part of the reason he takes so many sacks)…and makes more bad decisions than Cutler.
The great plays you see from Ben typically involve him breaking three tackles rolling our and finding a receiver downfield; however, if he’d just throw the ball when he should then those plays wouldn’t be necessary.

I think we have great depth on offense and am not overwhelmingly concerned about any of these injuries!
I don’t think that Nate Jack is that big of a dropoff from Scheff (Nate was the starter at the beginning of the year)…
and I don’t think that Hall is that big of a dropoff from Young (remember many of us at MHR were advocating for Hall to be the starter in preseason).
Royal is the biggest loss; however, with BMarsh, Stokley, Martinez, and DJack I think we’ll be okay for a couple of games.
Nevertheless, Jacksonville has always been a tough team for us…this should be a good game.

Thanks for the kudos.
I am really enjoying being on this board…some great information and discussions.

1st) Garrard CAN beat you. He just lead two game winning drives at crunch time vs Indy and Houston. Don’t underestimate one of the game’s best new QB’s.
2nd) Of course you like your chances, you’re a Broncos fan
3rd) This will be a good game. Our lines and Secondary is banged up, which doesn’t bode well against a Jay Cutler & Co.

What is the deal with Garrard?
Last year he did look like one of the best new QBs!
This year? 3 TDs & 4 INTs? 79.3 QBR?
What the hell happened?
I know the Offensive line has had some issues…but so have half offensive lines in the league.
What’s going on?
GO BRONCOS!!!

what happened on Sunday then?????????????
Garrard is so overrated it isnt even funny. Plus against Indy the jags were the beneficiaries of a BS interference call.

I like Garrard
The guy is a beast and I think this year poor play is more due to lack of weapons and a banged up line, I definately would not underestimate the man.

There just seems to be an incredible difference between Garrard last year and Garrard this year. I’m curious what harveyismyboy attributes that to!

I dont
maybe I am hard on him, but he is nothing more than a stop gap. He cant lead a team to a Super Bowl. Thta was proved in the playoffs against the Pats. When given a chance to score a TD he led them to FG’s. Plus this year their WR’s are no better than last years IMO.

to be fair...
last year was his first year as a starter (I think). It’s pretty impressive that he led them to the playoffs in the first place! I don’t think there are very many QBs that have led their team to a SB in their first season starting. His stats throughout the season were incredible. I think he should be a good QB for some time to come; however, he does seem to be having a significant sophomore slump.
In terms of WRs…I think a great QB makes receivers better. I think that’s true with Cutler (not that the receivers aren’t good…but he makes them better). I don’t know if that’s true with Garrard!
GO BRONCOS!!!

solution to offensive problems !
Buckle down and bring the same defensive game that we used against tampa.
garrard will and has in the past made fatal mistakes when the D has put the heat on .
blitz this boy silly ! make it so he has 0 margin for errors . If we can do that we will
A shot at 5-1

I hate injuries, in terms of how badly they can hurt a team.
However, when a team is so good that injuries don’t make a difference, then you’re in good shape. Scheffler is likely out, and Royal and Young may play hurt, but I’m not worried about the offense in the slightest. Injuries to the defense worry me, but the offense is just overloaded with fantastic talent right now.
