Better know the Jacksonville Jaguars: Question time with Big Cat Country!

Howdy and Greetings MHR!

It is I, your humble and broken Jacksonville Jaguars blogger from Big Cat Country.  If you couldn't tell, we're all a little depressed about the state of our season.  Perhaps the expectations were too big, but so far it's been a rough ride of injuries and mistakes.

Now our boys in teal head west to the site of the Jaguars greatest victory and one of their most disappointing defeats.  It's always special when we go to Denver, though it's probably not looked on nearly as fondly by the Bronco-Nation.

Anyhow, this is an open Q and A thread.  Anything you'd like to know about the Jaguars, the state of the team, injuries, I'll be glad to answer.  You can even toss a little smack, I'm down.

-Chris

O-Line

How is the health of your offensive line. My understanding was a few weeks ago the interior was pretty beat up?

Also our condolences, thoughts and prayers for Richard Collier. Hearing about that happen to him brought all the memories of Darrent Williams flooding back.

Collier is rough...

That shocked us all. You imagine what a season has in store, but you never expect one of your bright young developing players to have such a tragic thing happen to him. Thank god he’s alive, that’s for sure. Remember, we lost our Center in training camp (should return after the bye) during training camp, then lost two starting guards and Collier all in the same week. Returning to normal Jaguars football (Run, Run, Play Action) behind a rebuilt line is proving to be a challenge.

Things get better once Meester comes back because we can then move Dennis Norman, our backup center, back to Guard, which is his normal spot.

Things are improving for the line, they’re keeping Garrard on his feet. Now they just have to open the run lanes again.

David's struggles

First, we never expected him to throw only 3 interceptions this season. Unfortunately for David, he’s lost the running game to go with the Jaguars passing attack and has had to pass on 3rd and long far more often than he’s used to.

That said, his legs are the only reason the Jaguars are still alive right now, he’s able to get the yards when we need to convert on the ground, which is about the only positive in our ground attack.

Passing wise, the relationship he’s formed with Matt Jones is surprising and impressive, considering that most fans assumed Jones was done after his drug arrest.

Jags Defense?

How has the D looked this year? I mean Denver (as with most other teams) are used to seeing a smash mouth front 4 that makes even a 3 yard gain up the middle a solid run. Is that still the case in 2008? What about the pass D?

How has the Stroud thing affected the D Line?

And related: How do your rookie defensive ends look?

I'm a former Jacksonville resident (1996-2002)...

so I am wondering how the Jags are doing with the locals, in terms of a fan base. I remember it started pretty fast, but was already starting to tail off by around 2000, and the decision was made to cover seats to avoid blackouts. There was talk that particularly the Ponte Vedra Beach set generally felt like the novelty had worn off, and were over it. Have the fans bought back into the Jaguars, with their resurgence on the field over the past few years?

Your thoughts on Gregg WIlliams

Us Broncos fans can speak from experience about new DC, so what are your thoughts on him so far this year?

It's been rough...

I prefer the Jaguars ‘Del Rio/Smith’ Cover-2 base vs the Attack Scheme. I was excited as a fan to see what sort of sexy packages Williams would bring to the table, but all I’ve seen are our linebackers (a strength of our team) be out of position on a consistent basis.

I’ve a strong feeling the game this week will feature a defense like last year rather than the Gregg Williams chaotic mess of 2008.

Win here, rest for a week...

Then play the Lions, Bengals, and Browns. Yeah, a win here would be monumental for the Jaguars as far as restoring a bit of confidence before we get to the “easy” part of our schedule.

One of our members

“bradley” has been keeping track of road teams that have to travel cross country to play. I would guess that JAX to DEN must be on the fringe of a x-country trip… So far Brad’s numbers indicate that JAX, besides being a surprising underdog, will be fighting the pressures of jetlag, homesickness and airline food….

How worried are the fans about this game? It is looking like they won’t need to just upset the Broncos, but they may need to upset some historical trends regarding road teams…. What is giving you hope for this matchup?

well protected !

the jags knocked the crap out of big ben last sunday nite and pittsburgh still managed
to win the game. on the other hand jay cutlers jersey barely has any dirt on it so far
this season because in my oppinion pro bowl pass protection . how do the jags plan
to crack this fortified armor that denver has built around its QB that no other team
so far has yet to scratch ? And we already faced tough defenses .

Good Question

For this season, the worst pick has to be Trae Williams, who’s no longer with the team. The Jaguars didn’t really have many draft picks, so having a guy not even make our practice squad probably qualifies. That said, Trae is one of the highest paid players on an NFL PS (in Philly), but he couldn’t hack it.

In the year before, it was our 4th round pick, Brian Smith. He looked like he might be a good pass-rusher coming out of Missouri, but he never recovered from a college injury and was released this season.

Our 2007 Draft yielded a ton of starters, probably one of the best all around drafts for the Jaguars since 2000.

We demand more Maurice Jones Drew!!!

Well, the donkey fans around here might want you to wait a week on that. It seems like he’s taken over the feature role this year, is that fair and how has it been working so far?

Is that your score prediction?

It was the score when the BRONCOS not "donkeys"

Absolutely schooled poor faiderPete’s faiders on Monday Night Football in their own back yard. Kind of sad really, when the conquered faiders are not even relevent enough for him to stick to his own match-up, so he must come to our place and talk about ours. Of course, you can’t really blame him. I mean, he is after all, a faider with nothing good to say about his own team. How bout, faiderpete sticks to Al-Al-Land and all of that mess while the Broncos continue to turn La-La-Land into reality.

Yes, that was a friendly reminder for faderpete

I’ll remind any fader who comes in here using the word “donkeys.” 41-14… the end.

Congratulations

you’ve found out the Raiders were bad.

Anyways….

by RaiderPete on Oct 9, 2008 6:52 PM MDT up reply actions

RaiderPete was annoying when he thought the Faders were better than the Broncos!

but besides that he’s not to bad and offers some good perspecive. We should take it easy on him!

GO BRONCOS!!!

Agreed

Raider Pete’s a good guy.

by bradley on Oct 9, 2008 7:44 PM MDT up reply actions

Good guy or not...

I don’t go to SABP and call them the faders, so I expect that nobody comes here and uses the name donkeys. He can say donkeys all he wants there, among his own fader brethren, but here, I think it is over the line of decency and respect. Doing so will result in a reminder of the score from me, because it really sucks to lose 41-14 on national TV, but what is worse is when those 14 points were in garbage time, and what is even worse than that is when the most hated “donkeys” applied the whipping.

Point taken

I’m an old coot who won’t call any team anything except their real name. It’s not necessary, IMO. Regardless of place.

Keep Al on life support

FaiderPete, since Faider Nation has realized that Big Al has lost it (his ability and his mind), I guess BRONCO fans are now his biggest supporters, huh?

Playoff bound!

Yeah, long live Al Davis, may he continue to wreck the Raiders

I could think of a couple of things...

Super Bowl wins and HOF acknowledgment would rate higher than the Raiders in chaos… but those are the only things. :)

Is the Jags defense better this year or not

And do you think they should of traded for either Jared Allen or Jason Taylor?

So what is the deal with the jags

not being able to finish games. This year they have seemed to lose the lead or barely squeak by in the final minutes of games. is it conditioning, or something less fixable?
