Broncos Sign QB Darrell Hackney To Active Roster
The Denver Broncos on Saturday signed quarterback Darrell Hackney to their active roster from their practice squad, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.
The Broncos also on Saturday waived tackle Matt Murphy, whom they signed on Monday.
Hackney (6-foot-0, 248 pounds) is a second-year player who spent the first eight weeks of the 2008 season on Denver's practice squad. He was on the Broncos' active roster for their final eight games of the 2007 campaign after beginning that season on their practice squad but has yet to appear in an NFL regular-season game.
In four games (1 start) with the Broncos during the 2008 preseason, Hackney completed 24-of-38 (63.2%) passes for 285 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions for a 94.7 passer rating.
A first-team All-Conference USA selection as a senior at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Hackney entered the NFL with Cleveland as a college free agent on May 5, 2006.
He attended Douglass High School in Atlanta and was born on Aug. 7, 1983.

Am I the only one who is happier than a clam about this? Ramsey is out for the season right? Hackney isn’t prototypical, but he keeps things alive. Reminds me a lot of that other guy, Bradlee van Pelt. I wish we had kept him around…

I'm happy about it!
I just really hope that it doesn’t become relevant.
GO BRONCOS!!!

I'm happy because...
…we don’t have to worry about Ramsey anymore. Do you recall during the MNF thread when Cutler went out a series and Ramsey came in. Everyone’s attitude was “here we go…fumble or interception” and it happened.
Maybe it was all the bad energy we sent out from our laptops :)
Hackney did seem a lot more confident and capable in the pre-season. But you’re right he doesn’t look like the prototypical QB; more like the Hefty-Lefty.

I love it
Ramsey had a bad habbit called ‘ints’…..not that Ramsey is a bad QB—he just needs to be a starter or out of football. He never had the mental wherewithall to come into a game at a moments notice and perform. Hackney reminds me a lot of someone, I just don’t know who, I just like him.
The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.

I'm also happy, he looks like a tough NFL football player
Who knows, maybe we can have two QBs in the backfield at once? Doing that several times a game would definitely keep defenses honest.

Interesting read on release of Murphy....
May this see us go after KGB after his release from Green Bay?

I doubt it
MattR indicated when we signed “Guitar” that he was being brought in for the week to be a body for practice, little more. The Broncos now have someone they can call off the street if they get into injury troubles with the oline, since Pears is out for the year.
I am not saying that this rules out the Broncos targeting KGB (I haven’t really looked into that issue yet), just that the two ideas probably don’t have anything to do with eachother.

KGB
I’m not sure if we want KGB. Granted he is extremely taleneted and a great passrusher. But I think that a passrusher is all he is and he is not at all good against the run.
While we desperately lack a pass rush right now, we also lack a run stopping defense. Concering KGB, I don’t know if the juice is worth the squeeze – he would have to be purely situational (like in GB) and with the kind of money he would want, I don’t know if that’s worth it.

I talked with a guy who is a scout with th eBC lions yesterday and said thhat there is some truth to Denver's interest in DE/LB Cameron Wake.

What have we to lose....
If KGB brings ANY pressure at all that is a bonus, and might free up Dumervil and allow our DT’s to be more effective.
With Champ out we need help on the pass rush…and help fast or we are going to get killed.
Champs injury is a KILLER….the difference between 11-5 and 8-8 IMHO.
Thanks!

KGB
I think we should sign KGB, He may be 31 but he is a better option then Ekuban and Engleberger. The guy has 74 1/2 sacks in the last 9 years. That is damn good. I agree with boydy2669 that we need all the pass rush possible because without champ our DB are going to get thrown on all day. Also KGB could be a legit pass rush opposite of dumervile. The team can not double team DOOM and KGB. I think we have nothing to lose and we should give him a shot. If he does not work out we could release him. We need all the help we can get on the Dline

I Don't think Eck is doing all that bad. He's got some sacks this year.

Agreed
Ek is supposed to be a run stuffer, but he uses his size well to pass rush when he sees pass. Too bad he’s getting older; he’s a solid player.

Upgrade
I think Hackney is an upgrade at the back-up QB position. His height is an issue but if there is a suite of plays designed to give him passing lanes or to roll out he can deliver the same type of laser pass as Cutler. I knew he was stocky from training camp but I did not realize he is nearly 250 lbs!. That is a load for a QB!. In the practices I saw he took more snaps with the first team than Ramsey.

I say let the kidd try to be the "back up" that we obviously thought that he could be.
Who knows, if JC goes down, then his athletisism(sp?) may just be enough to make him shine?! what do you think?

I don't see him
as a control the game type QB. He seems like a chang-of-pace come-from-behind guy who could energize the team with his athleticism (my spelling is no better than yours) and energy. I think he is a great back up.
