Tatum Bell Re-Signed By Broncos

This comes from CBS4DENVER...

Bell Back With the Broncos

Former Denver Broncos running back Tatum Bell has re-signed with the team that drafted him Tuesday, CBS4 Broncos Insider Vic Lombardi reports.  The move comes after Bell reportedly worked out for the team Tuesday morning.

Bell, 27, started this preseason with the Lions, but was cut on Sept. 2 and has been out of football since.  The Broncos picked Bell with the second-round of the 2004 draft.

Bell rushed for 921 yards in 2005 and 1,025 yards in 2006 with the Broncos.  Bell was then traded to Detroit before the 2007 season, along with right tackle George Foster, in exchange for cornerback Dre' Bly.

His return to Denver should boost a team that has seen several running backs suffer season-ending injuries.

Something with the last name bell makes a RB fumble all the time.

This guy doesn’t hit the hole, he tap-dances to it.

Michael Fabiano really knows nothing about football outside of regression analysis and stat extrapolation. If it doesn’t have to do with fantasy football, his opinion is worthless.

OMG, is Shanny lost it!

This guy was a cry baby, fumbler, no blocking, thief and we resign his sorry ass. My only hope is that they are signing him to be Spencer Larsen’s personnel tackling dummy in practice.

...yeah but he has fumblitus disease...

Cmon it won’t be too bad, we need a spark in our running game and I think he can bring it with 1-2 30-50yds runs a game, if he still has his speed. I don’t think its as bad a temporary move for us to get us by this chaos at RB position. Sure Hillis/Haynes+Young (when healthy) would be good, but until then it will be Haynes/Bell with Hillis this upcoming week @ ATL

by isiddiqi on Nov 11, 2008 11:31 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...

…I’m not too excited about this signing…I would have rather had Mike Bell than Tatum. I don’t know…I think just keep Hillis as our back and run it right up the middle…he said it himself in a lockerroom, that this week with more preparation and practice at running back, he’ll do A LOT better.

Wouldn’t Mike Bell be more of Hillis type running though? This signing gives us the speed that Hillis lacks. I bet Bell won’t even play unless Young goes down.

Broncos apparently

don’t want to lose the “change-up” ability of the running game. Tatum was a runner who needed defenses softened for him, but outside of one year with Mike Anderson, he never had that (BFSISD, remember anything special from that year?)

I think that Hillis is still the starting RB (unless Pope has been spectacular or something). Bell could be useful as a changeup guy, but only if the defense is on its heels and not able to get too many hats or hands on him. I am 50/50 on the signing, but i’m sure it doesn’t have the potential to destroy the team or anything. In other news, luggage locks are flying off the shelves in Denver…

Shanahan has an aspect to his ‘meritocracy’ that has always frustrated me, namely that he will let ONE good performance cloud his mind to what a player consistently does.

2005

He had 921 yards but he is and was more known as a outside speed guy. His average was 5.8. He was over 6 before the last game of the year. He had 8 TD’s with a long of 67. Against the Skins he had TD runs of 55 and 34, of his 8 TDs 3 were over 50 yards. In 3 games that year he did not even have a carry. Now I am not a fan of him. Now I believe Hills will be the between the tackles runner. I also believe that with him knowing the Denver system was a huge factor in being resigned. This could work.
He is not an every down back. As proved by all his fumbles in 2007.

and Anderson had 1014 yards. If I remember right it would have been the first tandem backfield to have both backs go over 1000 yards? Maybe ATL or TB were in that mix as well, i don’t really recall…

1976: Steelers: Harris 1128, Bleier 1036
1985: Browns Mack 1104, Byner 1002.

In 2006 the Falcons did and was the first tandem to do it with QB, Vick 1039, Dunn 1039. Not too mention Vick was the only QB to ever rush for 1000

Miami and Pittsburgh did this in 14 games. Only the Dolphins made it to the Super Bowl.

Count on Selvin...

by precisiontint on Nov 11, 2008 12:40 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Come on...

With Haynes Denver has a big 230 pound bruiser and with Bell they have a guy who (despite being a merely average back) has proven he can pick up yards and knows the system. Yeah he had some issues. He caught the fumble bug toward the end of his run – and because of that I was sure he was done here in Denver. Usually when Shanny ships you out of town you don’t come back.

But ask yourself this – the Broncos are in the almost unimaginable position of having lost ALL their top tailbacks. It’s going on week 11. The free agent market is slim pickings; anyone out there on the waiver wire in week 11 is not with a team for a reason. You take the best guys you can find and right now Alex Haynes and Tatum Bell are it.

Let’s try to look on the bright side of this – Haynes is going to need some time to learn the system. He’s not going to start this week. Bell already knows the system and can hit the ground running, so to speak. In a sense it was lucky there’s a relatively young back out there who has already been in Denver and did have some decent production while he was here.

You have to realize, none of the tailbacks on the Broncos roster are going to be expected to put up 150 yards a game. If they do, great. All we need is enough of a running game to balance out offense a little bit. It’s all about making lemons out of lemonade and I think it may end up being the best possible move in a situation where there just aren’t a lot of good moves.

by TheMastermind on Nov 11, 2008 12:49 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Selvin must not be ready for action.

Selvin is the preferred change of pace, third down, speed back. But to me, this signing indicates, Selvin will not be ready for this week.

Bell does bring speed, and he knows the offense. So he can be plugged right in and he will probably get 8-10 touches this week.

This is just a temporary stop gap move. Chances are he will not last with the Broncos, unless he has become a changed man, which sometimes does happen. If his attitude has changed, he certainly has the physical ability to help the team.

by The Gun Young on Nov 11, 2008 1:11 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Outside of fumbling

My second worst thing about him was his “I want to be the man,” attitude. Getting shipped to the worst team in the league and then cut from them may have tempered that aspect.

After those two points (fumbles, attitude) my gripes were keeping his feet healthy (turftoe) and last and most fixable I wanted him to develop a little patience when they asked him to run between the tackles. He would always run into his blockers, stop, wait, then try to accelerate back through the hole which had closed back up by then. He was never in rhythm with the oline…

Good move

I’ll call it what it is. Tatum isn’t going to bring the roof down, but now we have something absolutely necessary to a football team: some semblance of depth at the RB position.

Tatum has too many upsides to worry about his slippery hands. Biggest of them being that he KNOWS THE SYSTEM ALREADY. That is a HUGE benefit.

I’m sure Shanny will have a talk with him about running “hold the friggin ball” drills all week to shore up his problem holding the ball.

Otherwise, I agree with what others have said…he is a perfect change of pace and a very dangerous weapon (don’t forget screens and underneath routes…he could totally break some big yardage for us).

…now having said that watch him fumble 2 times in the next game and lose it for us. LOL If so, you have my permission to flame me good. :)

We are now a threat with our running game, im not trying to be sarcastic either, Tatum Bell is a dynamic back who knows the system and still runs a 4.3 something.

I really am pissed, Shanahan has stressed character this year, and what do we do, bring back a this clown, who whinned while he was here and was happy to leave. I understand the depth but then get Mike Bell, he “knows the system” and had about as much success holding onto the ball as taum. At least he has been a standup guy.

agreed!

terrible move. I’d rather see Royal moved to RB (which I believe wasn’t unheard of in college). Honestly, stick to a spread single-back formation (with Hillis, Larsen, Young, or one of the other guys they just brought in). It has worked all season. Tatum Bell is a fumble waiting to happen (ignoring any ‘character’ concerns that he brings in).

Fumbles

For a bit of perspective, hasn’t Marshall fumbled quite a bit earlier this season? Yeah, but we still try to get him the ball, yes?

Now Tatum is no BMarsh, but role-wise it is a very valuable move on Shanny’s part. Maybe Tatum gets 6 – 10 carries (barring no one else getting injured). Chances are not likely that he will fumble..especially if given specific instructions to just “gain what you can, then go down and hold on to the ball”.

Were I a coach, I’d tell him something along those lines…he’s a far cry from a bruising back…run fast and get what you can, then either get out of bounds or drop to the turf to keep this offense moving.

by sadaraine on Nov 11, 2008 2:24 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Well...do expect me to say that I'm happy about BMarsh's fumbles?

But the relative ‘upside’ of the two players isn’t even remotely comparable…so you’re willing to take a chance with Marshall. I don’t think that Bell’s upside makes up for his downside…not even close.

GO BRONCOS!!!

by UnarmingMermaid on Nov 11, 2008 2:28 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree

I think the upside of having depth at RB is way worth the risk as long as this is a stop-gap solution (though my opinion would change if Tatum wowed us as I’m sure Shanny’s would too)

by sadaraine on Nov 11, 2008 2:35 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

This is a football team...

not a church youth group, so I don’t particularly care about his incident with Rudi Johnson’s bag. I care about winning football games, and if Tatum Bell can help do that, then I’m fine with this signing. I think any worries about his character are probably overblown, because he’s now a minimum wage guy who just took the only job he has been offered. If he’s a problem, you can just bounce him. I think there’s a fair chance that he has finally been humbled, and maybe he’ll be ready to just be a member of a football team that is trying to win.

As for fumbling, Tatum has fumbled on 1.7% of his career touches, which is equal to Michael Pittman’s career total. For comparison, Terrell Davis fumbled on 1.1% of his, and Selvin Young is at 0.8% in his short career. Tiki Barber fumbled on 1.9% of his career touches, and Shaun Alexander has fumbled on 1.3% of his. Obviously, we’d like our backs to be closer to TD and Selvin Young’s performance, but my point is, 1.7% isn’t THAT outlandish, for a guy you pick up out of the unemployment line.

It strikes me that I can’t think of a better RB than Tatum Bell who was unemployed at the start of today. There’s very little downside here, and some potential for upside. If he blows this chance, his career is probably over, and nothing was really lost by our team.

by Ted Bartlett on Nov 11, 2008 3:06 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Funny how things come around

my first thought on the signing was “I wonder how long this will last?”

I mean, in my 13-3 dreams I can totally picture the return of a better man in Tatum Bell, taking the role he was always meant to have with the Broncos (chang of pace back) and being happy and good at it.

I also agree that there is a good chance that he has been humbled, and can fit with this team’s attitude, and also that our perspective of him as a fumbler is tainted by his “final days” as a Bronco.

I remember when he came out of college, I thought we were lucky to have him. This wouldn’t be my favorite sport if there weren’t these kinds of storylines to keep us riveted to not only the action, but to the context for it all…

Still fuming, I really don’t get this move, again if we wnat depth, why not sign Mike Bell, isn’t he the guy who made Tatum Bell expendable in the first place by taking his job?

Not after training camp

Mike Bell just isn’t an impact player and he’s not a bruiser either…he’s some sort of vanilla in between. Depth is what make Tatum Bell expendable. I think it is very interesting how depth has made him valuable again.

I do get your anger Broncoman, but we have big bruisers as it stands….it is our change of pace or fast back that lack right now. I sure hope you see the benefit as Tatum contributes (even if it is no more than cheering the team on and being there just “in case”).

The Seahawks gave up a fifth-round pick to get Colbert from the Broncos when they were desperate for healthy bodies at receiver, but he caught just seven passes in seven games and fell behind Koren Robinson on the depth chart. Colbert showed promise as a rookie in 2004, but is now clinging to NFL life.

And in other news . . .

Brandon Marshall has reported his wallet and his black and white glove missing . . .

Mixed feelings.

Good

Fumbles? Yeah. But also a lot of yards. A humbled guy who seems to want some redemption.

Bad

We’re really getting to the bottom of the barrel to call the guy up.

I’m going to reserve my opinion until I see him play. It’s an opportunity for Bell to play again, and Shanahan’s grace may pay off or not. We have little to lose at the point that we’ve run out of RBs.

Aye

I doubt that Bell will do any stealing in Denver. The question is, will he gain yards or fumble a lot. In his two years, despite the fumbles, he put up pretty good yards for a guy in a committee system.

We have little to lose; we’re out of RBs.

We should, but not against Atlanta.

They have a fast defense, and I think they’re the wrong team to do much screens against. Screens are great against slow defenses, or fast defenses that swarm / overpursue.

Against several other teams, yes. We have perfect RBs (including FBs) for screens, and very elite pass blocking at TE and OTs to make them work.

Hillis was needed more as a HB than a FB.

Also, with the unexpected RB injuries, we needed to play more aggressively in the air.

It may sound counter-intuitive with our RB injuries...

But ATL is a team I want to hit the gut against with a running game. They are small and fast (like us), and you beat a defense like that with running up the middle. I don’t see Denver doing this though.

because we can't

that is exactly why i have been asking for some size/strength in the running game, and in the middle of the field in general, both sides of the ball. we lose the interior battles to way too many teams. we brought in some size, now we are trying to bolster our speed that is all on the sideline. as far as tatum goes, this move just reinforces my opinion that young is done, or soon to be done. yes, we’re licking the bottom of the bowl here, but i believe we are fortunate there is any talent out there at this point in the season. and he does know the system, another huge plus. in fact, i see more pluses than minuses, here. the fumbling element to his game is also somewhat overrated. consider this: at this point, we traded george foster for dre bly, and bell is just a backup on the depth chart. sound better? cross your fingers, this may just work out

I think we can

Our O-Line is actually bigger and just as fast/quick as their D Front Seven. Our Run Zone Block not only works against this front seven, it will pound for 5-8 yards per rush and then spring the occasional long gain. We could have Zappa back there and gain 5 yards per carry.

What we cannot do is fall behind early and let them run against us the same way. We can win this game, but we can’t turn the ball over and we can’t be stupid.

Screens good...underneath routes better this week

I agree with others here…screens are a good match for our talents, but a bad match against the Falcons. But I really think underneath routes could be very game changing against them…with all the time Cutler gets to throw and let plays develop Hillis or Bell could be very very dangerous underneath.

inspired

apparently they are not playing an unmotivated cleveland team this week:

"On a day off we had 40 of our players in today," Smith said. "Again, I think that speaks volumes of where our football team is to have 40 to come in and work out on a day off.

i dont think we can count on sloppy play. it speaks volumes that we are hoping for the other team to play sloppy so we have a chance to win.

Shanny talked about Tater in his presser just a few minutes ago . . .

He said he didn’t care about the accusations outside his club. If he didn’t know Bell, then Bell wouldn’t be here, Shanny added, but because he does know him as a person and values him, he signed him because he knows what Bell can do on the field.

Actually, I’m pulling for Tater, and I hope he really picks it up this time around . . .
