Who's it going to be... Denver RB vs Falcons
With the recent signing and promotions from the practice squad, the question of who the featured RB for the Broncos remains in question.
Leading off in this revolving door postion is Hillis. Can the two big brusiers Larson at full back and Hillis at half back move enough to the Falcons interior linemen and MLB to gain enough yards? Does Hillis have the speed to get around the corner? We know that Hillis can catch, as evident from 2 weeks ago. However, he still has blocking problems and that is why Larson is still a FB instead of a MLB. I ask the MHR faithful, can this be our featured back? I love Hillis and want it to work, but I questions my logic.
Second in line, I believe goes to T.Bell. Does he know our "new" play book? Is he in shape? Does he still have the speed to hit the corner and turn on the juice. We know he will be be winded after a few plays but how many carries do we think he can handle, if any? Maybe a ploy to make the Falcons D game plan for him.
Third in line, P.J. Pope, see BroncoBear's excellent write up. I think Pope sees the field. Said to have excellent hands and be a between the tackles runner. Maybe we see some Hillis and Pope in a double RB set where they both go out for a pass.
Third and one third. Alex Haynes. Don't want to hurt feelings... So I won't say anything here.
Fourth is the option of an empty back field. I see two TE sets maybe even three TE sets. Pass Blocking has been excellent and we have the targets to make it happen.
Let me know what the MHR faithful think... Happy musing.

I didn't like my vote, but I felt that this might be the route we go again this week.
I voted, “Why do we need to run the ball… We have Jay!” I don’t vote this like the homer it sounds like. I feel we will have no choice but to pass the ball 2/3’s of the time…not because we want to, but because we’ll have too. By next week, we might have Selvin Young back and Tatum Bell in…we’ll have some balance and depth. Until then, we’ll need to ride on Cutler’s back to victory this weekend!!

I wanted to vote the same--but had a moment of insanity--and voted for Tatum.....
don’t know what got into me.
The best defense is a good defense!
And last week's young players. Yes!
I think it was a sympathy or something.

I think Tatum wants to prove something--let's hope its not he fumbles.

Sorry BroncoBear... I didn't have the link correctly attached. But I fixed it now.

I voted smash mouth
Everyone seems to forget that Hillis was recruited as a RB at Arkansas, unfortunately or fortunately for Denver, there were two guys in the way of McFaden and Felxi Jones that also went to Arkansas, that being the case, Hillis still managed to have a great career as a runner as the third or forth option. As far as the blocking, again we are talking drive blocking FB versus blitz pick-up for a RB, I agree Hillis is not a great blocking FB but he can handle blitz pick-up. The game against Cleveland, he took the wrong man, but that was also a bad line call, the protection should of been shifted to the left, but they stayed right and would of allowed a free man regardless of who Hillis and Clady picked up. Do I expect Hillis to get 200 yds, no, but 80 yds and 40 yds catching is fine, I want him in there for the tough yards, when we have 3rd and 3 or 2nd and 4, that is where he is at his best.

My thoughts are Larson and Hillis go hand and Hand in this game.
Hillis wants to prove he can run and catch and Larson want to be a football player no matter where is his playing. It is time to step into the spotlight this week and see if they can get it done.
Here are my thoughts:
1. If Larson blocks well for Hillis and Hillis doesn’t run well… Hillis is out of a job.
2. If Hillis runs well and Larson doesn’t block… Larson moves back to defense and maybe into shanny’s dog house.
3. If the both do well we could see a repeat of them in the games to come.
Anyway… I think both are playing for their careers on Sunday. It may be harsh, but I don’t think it is off base. Only one of them is going to be the fullback next year.
All I am going to say is that the RB roster is pretty full of ok players right now and the draft, free agency, and spring training is going to separate the boys from the men. Pitman has been the best for us this year, however is is getting older. No one else has show true starting caliber as of yet.

I agree with Zappa
Cutler is the key. I need fantasy advice. I have to pick three receivers out of B. Marsh, E. Royal, Roddy White, T.O and D. Jackson(Eagles). The homer wants to go all Broncos but if Champ is out realistically White could go off. If Champ does play, which I think he will cuz he is tough, then Matt Ryan stays away from Champ and probably White too. So…who do I start?
With our defense...
Start White for sure and T.O.(Romo’s back) and then start BMarsh. Eddie Royal has been more consistent in recent weeks, but I have a good feeling about BMarsh coming up big this weekend. Jackson is another risk…if you want to start him, then put him in place of T.O. since I would give T.O. a 50-50 chance of having a big game with Romo’s return. That’s my opinion anyway… :)

lol...that whole paragraph had BMarsh and Royal switched....
then I changed it to have BMarsh starting. lol It appears we are definitely on the same wave length

I wanted to vote with you but had a momentary lapse into maddness and voted for Tatum
The best defense is a good defense!
And last week's young players. Yes!
I would start Marshall, Royal and Roddy White
In fact, I will be starting Marshall and Royal, along with Scheffler.
I also need fantasy advice. Who would you start at QB, Tony Romo or Matt Ryan?
Touchdowns win championships?
I go with Romo, I think they hate the Skins and really try to put it on them
but…that is a good one! I don’t know…Ryan might get tons of points for dinks and dunks that go 80 yards, sorry but Norwood and Turner scare me and if Champ is out, so does White…so maybe Ryan isn’t bad either.
romo will throw TDs...ryan might hand off for TDs

I don't think Champ will play
That being said, I really like how Dre Bly has played in coverage since Champ’s injury, he has been playing mor press coverage and seems to be shutting down opposing recievers. So I would go with TO over White this week (IMO)
"Me fail english, that unpossible" - Ralph Wiggum
B-man, I am thinking T.O, B Marsh and R.White... Do you like Royal over White this week?
T.O. and BM are locks I am playing them. The question is Royal vs Foxworth or White vs Bly?
Steve, you know I didn't think of that, Eddie vs Foxy....
What a fun thing to watch.
The best defense is a good defense!
And last week's young players. Yes!
Foxworth is a good man
I had the chance to talk with him briefly and was blown away by his manners. I really wish him all the best but… Down down down, you are going down, down down down, you are going down!
I like Royal over White the reason being as follows
Royal will be drawing less attention, especially with Marshall and Schefler on the field, which means a lot of one on one with Foxworth, I like that match up. White will be the focus of Bly and probably a sfaety over the top, much like they did with Edwards last week, plus I think Atlanta will be content to try to pound the ball and not look to pass a lot, basically try to keep the ball out of Jay’s hands and keep it in Turner. I am starting B. Marshall and Royal on my team.
"Me fail english, that unpossible" - Ralph Wiggum
All my man
I am taking your advice, I am going with Royal. So my wide outs are Marshall, TO and Royal. Man I hope Denver puts up a 40 burger!!
fantasy
i have the same options- minus white. so my choice is easy, ill take Royal over jackson anytime. in your case i think roddy is a good pick for any easy 10+. but if Marsh is shut down, and royal carries the bulk,. you would be better off with Royal/ Marsh.
i love having Denver in my ffl because it gives me something to to cheer about even if we are getting beat.

I'm hoping we go with power at RB over speed.
ATL has small fast guys like we do (on def). You defeat that with power up the gut.
"Greater is an army of sheep led by a lion, than an army of lions led by a sheep" Defoe
I agree--personally I think Hillis and Graham are going to have big games this weekend.
With Eddie excelling for all the small guys in the world.
The best defense is a good defense!

HT, I really think Shanny fills up the air with footballs.
So many reasons why:
Foxworth vs Royal – Royal will kill him on double moves due to his eagerness for a pick six.
The Atlanta offense is keyed around running the ball, so you get up early and make it a throwing contest for three quarters and know Cutler is the better of the two. W-Cutler W Broncos.
If you try to make it a power running game it can be 3-0 for a while, Denver is hanging in there, hanging in there, then the home crowd gets into it and BAM an 80 yarder and then it’s a New England, KC, on the road landslide of momentum. Cutler presses and boom. Dunskies.
I hope to see a lot of middle of the field passing, skinny posts, double moves, TE deep down the middle, mix in an occasional screen to Tatum, and short yardarge you use Hillis and throw in the playaction as well.
but nothing kills a home crowd
like smashing the ball straight into their defense on the ground

Right.
I think we need balance. Run the ball effectively for, say, 4-5 yards a carry, and have Cutler burn them with play action. I think our TE’s will be heavily involved in this one, and I could see a lot of 2 TE, 1 RB sets. Bottom line, it always comes down to the offensive line. If they can open up holes for Hillis, he has deceptive speed and is much bigger than Atlanta’s linebackers.
It was once said that a million monkeys typing at a million computers could reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the internet, we know that is not true.
I think Shanny will mix it up with all of them
and whoever has the hot hand and starts running well will get the majority of the carries. I don’t care who it is, I just want to go the remainder of the season without anymore RB injuries.
"It doesn't dissipate" ~ Mike Shanahan
Cutler's 4th qtr/OT game winning drives: 5
My theory
is that Shanny’s hand is forced. Tatum Bell was picked up because he is familiar with Denver playbook and zone block scheme and proved he could operate in it. However, it is unlikely, even with the long week, that he can be in good enough condition to be the starter, unless he has been running stairs on his breaks from the cell phone store. PJ Pope has not had enough real experience as either a Bronco or an NFL RB to start. Hillis knows the playbook, has proved he can catch, and should be able to run well against Atlanta.

The Hanging Curve
Hillis
Tatum is out of football shape – we’re snake-bit enough without him coming on and getting hurt too. I’m sure that he’ll get some carries, but it’s going to be mostly Hillis and, perhaps a prayer for some Pope.
Thanks to the MHR I was watching some highlights of Hillis. After learning that he has about the same speed as TD, I found it interesting that he shares the refusal to go down on first contact as well. Maybe Shanahan is right – Larsen will be our fullback and Hillis will be the thunder to go with ’whoever’s’ lightning. If Larsen can catch, which I don’t know about, he and Hillis together would be a very tough backfield to defense and a very good short yardage duo.
MHR...the best football site on the web
Another component
To complement that duo of power runners, we would need very good interior power blocking. Weigmann is an excellent puller and a more than competent zone blocker, but is he strong enough to take on guys like Kris Jenkins or Albert Haynesworth? What about Kuper and Hamilton? They’re lighter, shiftier linemen, and are far better suited for pass blocking and zone schemes than short yardage. We’re better suited on the O-line for a back like Selvin Young or Ryan Torain than we are Hillis’s bruising style.

I cheated
and voted for a “big mix of these guys and maybe others…” because that’s what happened yesterday!
