A temporary lapse of reason

Hi all… my first fan post is prompted by a casual look at the NFL standings. Now this isn’t something I look at too often strangely enough. I’ve had it in my head most of middle of the season that the Broncos have no shot at a wild card and the only chance we have of the playoffs is to win the division and hold the Chargers off. So the standings were academic if I knew how many games ahead of San Diego we were.

This season I’ve resisted getting too la-la-landy in my mind to stave off the highly probable disappointment that a largely rookie team carries with it. However tonight I noticed something that landed me in La-La-Land, flying first class (getting to use the La-La-Land Air lounges is awesome of course.. free internet and Coke Zero) and touching down for a perfect landing.

How did I get these sweet airline tickets I hear you ask? Well firstly I noticed that the Division leaders ahead of the 6-4 Broncos in the AFC division standings are the untouchable Tennessee Titans at 10-0, the NY Brett Value Jets (very cramped seats and no food service) at 7-3 and the 7-3 Steelers.

Then I quickly realised that the fast improving Broncos can catch the Jets just by actually beating them. That’s the tie breaker. Denver also has to beat KC, the Faders, SD, Buffalo and Carolina. I think, assuming we beat the Jets them 5-1 is possible with a possible loss to the Panthers and maybe Buffalo.

Pittsburgh on the other hand has NE, Dallas, Baltimore, Tennessee and Cleveland ahead of them. Looking at the strength of this home stretch, you could forgive the average Steeler fan for cringing in a corner. One could say it’s just as likely that Pittsburgh could go 0-5 as 1-4 as 2-3 as 3-2 as 4-1. If they go 5-0 down the stretch against these teams then they deserve their bye!

The Jets have Tennessee, Denver, SF, Buffalo, Seattle and Miami. I think this is a reasonably easy home stretch besides the next two games and Buffalo.

My point is that if Denver can take care of business and drop only 1 or even 2 games then they control their own destiny and the chance to get a wild card round bye is not pie in the sky. I feel that they have as good a chance as any of the other current Division leaders apart from Tennessee.

I know this is all speculation and it’s important to look at one game at a time but with the last two games lifting spirits, I’ve not actually heard any talk about this possibility. It’s a strong one and I for one have my fingers crossed a little less tightly than I would have two weeks ago.

Thanks for hearing me out and excusing my overly optimistic post!!

Great hearing from another Aussie...

I noticed that too.
Even if we were 2nd in our division at 6-4 we would still be VERY entrenched in the wild card race.
We can beat the jets, and I can see us doing the sweep of the NFC South.
If our defense keeps improving, and our running game improves too (I like our back field now and womnder how Selvin even fits in now?) we can beat a LOT of teams.
Great post mate!

Wouldn't that be something?

I haven’t even considered seeing a first round bye. lmao I forget that Indianapolis won’t be a threat for that other spot, so we only really have to worry about Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Jets, and Patriots…if we beat the Jets we would still have to contend with the Patriots there since they beat us and also the Ravens and Steelers could go either way…I still wonder if we have too difficult of a schedule ahead of us to worry about that first round bye. Let’s head in Carolina on a 5 game winning streak…then we’ll talk first round bye. :D

Very nice post, but I agree with Zappa's last line, and I'll add

this is the same Denver team that lost to KC, and was embarrassed by NE and beaten by Miami. When you look at a schedule and say, “we should win this one and that one” that is when you get burned. Denver plays well when they know they need to execute to win because it is a tough opponent. They seem to have brain farts during games they should easily win. So, lets just focus on the Raiders, one game at a time.

totally agree Steve O'

but you know… it’s possibility now. One that two weeks ago wasn’t even considered…. and it only takes an unexpected loss to blow this whole theory out the window. But for now that’s the same for every team. Our destiny is in our own hands and that’s the way the Broncos should want it…

Look at like this... if Denver goes 3-3 for the remaining 6 games

Than San Diego will have to go 6-0 to win the division. So I am hoping for 4-2 down the stretch…who am I kidding I am hoping for 6-0 down the stretch!!!

by Steve O' on Nov 17, 2008 6:22 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Agree with some points Steve O....

We need to focus on one game at the time, but they are far different in make up and character from the pretenders we saw play at Kansas.
This team has a different look and feel.
Just my opinion, but NO way would the team that showed up on the weekend would have lost to Kansas or Jacksonville.

After thinking about it

Jets play the Titans this weekend.

Take care of business and beat Oakland, we may be up 3 games in the division and tied with the Jets for the 3rd seed.

The Jets game is prime for the picking.

The Broncos will come into the game looking for a 4 game win streak, and 4 is their lucky number. The Jets will be coming off a big win against the Titans, and everyone will be talking all week about how great the Jets are. And the game has been moved back to an afternoon game, which helps the Broncos with their time zone adjustment. So the Broncos will beat the Jets, and take the tie-breaker for playoff seeding, which could be huge. Because no, I Guarantee you all, the Patriots will not win their division, the Jets will.

However, considering the Broncos are such a young team, I would rather they not have a bye, but instead to into the playoffs with a win streak, and relatively healthy. I also think the two wildcards will probably be two teams we would love to play again – the Pats and Dolphins. What a better way to start the playoffs than to pay back those guys!

In order to get a revenge tour

I’m thinking Denver will need to get in as the #3 Division Winner, behind TEN and the winner of the East, most likely. I disagree with you on the Pats not winning that division, but the difference I think is that I have TEN beating the Jets this week. If both teams finish witht eh same record, chances are the division goes to the Jets, but for now, I have Pats finishing one game ahead of NYJ.

Regardless, the other divison winning seed will be either PIT or BAL, leaning towards PIT but noting that BAL can finish with the same record as PIT by beating them in week 15, which will give them a 2 game division record lead (unless CIN messes up either team, or CLE upsets PIT in the final game of the year).

IND, the runner up in the north (PIT or BAL) and the third guy in the East (NE, NYJ, or MIA) will duke it out for the final two wild card spots. IND has an insanely easy schedule coming up. THey could finish10-6 or 11-5 pretty easily, and if TEN isn’t trying for a perfect season in week 17, they have a good chance of taking that game at the Lube, and finishing as high as 12-4. They will almost for sure be the #1 wildcard, and will be playing the #4 division winner (DEN or PIT/BAL).

That means that MIA/NE/JETS/BAL/PIT will be the #2 wildcard team, playing the #3 Division winner. All things being equal, a first round bye and a home game is always a good thing, but being the #3 division winner has the best chance of drawing a revenge card and getting NE/MIA/NYJ in the first round at home.

The #3 Division winner will also get the #2 division winner if they win in the wildcard round, which, by the reasoning above, is most likely to be the winner of the AFC East, meaning we will get either NE or NYJ most likely.

All in all it is not likely to get a two game revenge tour this year (divisional record in the east will see to that, since MIA beating NE for a shot at a wildcard would reduce NE’s chance of beating out the NYJ for the Division lead).

Also, all in all, it is way to early to be figuring this stuff out. :)

Chargers

Right now they’re playing down to their abilities. rivers is making strange mistakes, seems to be coming kind of unraveled. Still happy and loose on camera, but screwing up on the field. No TD’s for him this weekend. Still losing games in the final series, ala Pittsburgh, Carlina, us, etc.

Their D played better this week, but some of that was a struggling Pitt QB and a crappy field. No matter what, I’m not sure but what zappa was right all along – they’re unravelling, past their prime and falling. Might well be.

Chargers continued...

The Chargers schedule looks like this

Vs Indy – Good game. Manning has been playing well lately and Indy is looking more like their old selves.

vs Atl – Should be another good game. You better believe that Michael Turner is gonna come strong

vs Oakland – …..whatever, you never know…..

@ KC – ……see Oakland comment…..

@Tampa – a good, smash-mouth football team. They show the type of grit and physicality SD has always struggled against. Also an East Coast game.

vs. Denver – SD will be coming back from Florida after playing a physical game.

There is a strong chance that we win the AFC west. That’s enough for me. I’m not sure I want the wild-card bye. Gun Young made a valid point about that.

SD @ KC

Kansas City is always a tough place to play, but when they have a chance to mess with a team’s playoff chances, they also seem to play that much harder. I know in the past they have always made it difficult for the Broncos toward the end of the season when the playoffs are on the line.

I’ve got the chefs to beat the Bills this week and am looking forward to them getting their third victory against San Diego.

Great minds think alike!

I wrote my post (Denver in the Driver’s Seat) yesterday afternoon, and scheduled it for tonight (though Guru moved it up to 11:00am). We must have been writing at about the same time, and half a world away, but we have both grasped that, despite Denver’s shaky start, they could possibly be as high as a 2nd seed by the time the playoffs roll around. A first round bye isn’t out of the question.

Others starting to believe!

This article:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/dom_bonvissuto/11/18/playoff.projections/index.html
is projecting Denver to go 5-1 from here and end up with the No. 2 seed.

Finally getting some recognition after weeks of reading how SD were still going to take out the AFC west, it was only a matter of time, blah, blah, blah.
