The Wrath of Shanahan -- Broncos Release S Roderick Rogers
Mike Shanahan made it very clear that he was none too happy with the performance of 2nd year safety Roderick Rogers. The Coach also made it clear that it was Rogers, not Dre Bly, that blew the coverage on the turning point play of the game -- a 51-yard completion from JaMarcus Russell to former Bronco Ashley Lelie while the game was tied at 10.
Today, Rogers felt the wrath of Shanahan when he was given his outright release form the Broncos. Does this mean the beginning of the Josh Barrett era in Denver??
The official release is below --
The Denver Broncos on Tuesday waived safety Roderick Rogers, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.
Rogers, a second-year player from the University of Wisconsin, saw time in Denver's last three games (1 start) and posted six tackles (4 solo) on defense along with two special-teams stops. He spent the first nine weeks of the season on the Broncos' practice squad before he was signed to their active roster on Nov. 4.

Wow
Good for him. Time to say enough to some of the lessor performances.
He doesn’t know anything but 100 percent

I agree--the way our defense just seemed to crumble in the 3rd quarter--I think Shanny sent a, "There will be no quit on this team!" message.

He gets mad at Rogers and not Lowry, what gives
I am sorry, but Lowry is a waste of space on this team, he can’t or won’t tackle and he couldn’t cover a snail with a garbage bag, I understand the frustration, but I must say if anyone deserves to be working at the mall and selling cell phones, it is Lowry.

Bly
First off I am coming out of hiding a day earlier than usual (a feat I credit to Indy’s beating of the Chargers). My buddy has been a long time hater of Bly and I am beginning to be swayed. Seriously! The guy hemmorages big play after big play and frankly he’s just not the player he was billed to be. Champ was inactive again for the game on Sunday and so you’d think the Raiders would avoid throwing to the man covered by our 1a stud corner… Wrong! He was exposed. I won’t go so far as to say this goob is another Roc Alexander, but I’m beginning to lean with my friend in thinking Bly is well on his way to becoming him.
Seriously!

Maybe now every one will play harder, evem Lowry, because
next time it could be them… I think Rodgers was out because it specifically against the Raiders…

Don't you guys think
That Shanahan is throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks? He is desperate at that position. I am starting to think that this postion is going to get first day attention in the draft.

That would be nice.
When’s the last time we used a first or second round pick on a safety?
Uh-oh, maybe that wasn’t such a good question.
But I know to get a Billy Thomson-Dennis Smith-Steve Atwater type, you usually need to look for him in the early rounds.

Are you serious?
If Bell was so terrible, why aren’t opposing teams targeting him? It seems that every big play that goes against our secondary since Bell has been starting is on either Bly, Paymah, Manual, or Jack.

Agreed....
Damn kwool, Bell has been prettyn good.
QWhat do you want out of an undrfated rookie.
He is performing better than Darrent Williams, Paymah, Foxworth….all those guys….while playing in a WAY wordse backfield.
Look, no excuse for the weekend….the team showed no heart on offense and Cutler is a frickin waste when things dont go his way….but our defense was OK….lots of unheralded rookies that hung in there.
Cutler, BM, Eddie and the crew need to take a leaf from Bell’s book and keep fighting…..I thoink you are way off base here!

I don't see much positives in our defense this year noob.
Bell sucks and he did get burned several times so far this season. But hey, we have one hell of an offensive line though huh? I do see the positives on our team my man.
Our defensive secondary is not one of them, and I felt Bell was being over hyped. Outside of our hideous (healthy DB’s) name another player that I’ve disparaged if I’m so negative.

Cut Bly some slack
Here is my take on Bly – granted he has given up some big plays but I think this is a result of bad luck rather than poor defensive skills on Bly’s part.
Think of the Roddy White’s 32 yard catch against Bly in the Atlanta game. Bly was draped all over him, had his arm between White’s, but White just made a hell of a catch.
Think of the other big play in that game where Bly missed the interception and White went streaking for another 25 yards to be tackled just before the goal line. Really, Bly made a hell of an effort and just barely missed that interception – there was no safety help behind him in case he missed that interception like he did.
Then he makes a gamble on the all out blitz when Ryan threw it up and came away with the interception; the one key mistake that Ryan makes is punished and rightfully so.
Even the big 51 yard catch on Sunday was just a hell of a catch – Bly was all over him. I agree with Shanny that Hazma was probably responsible.
Bly is not Bailey and people will always compare him to that because Bly is good but not great. Comparitively, people will not compare Jack Williams, Paymah, or Bell to Bailey because they are still young and no one expects them to be great.
One last comment in Bly’s defense. In his 1 1/2 years with Denver, Bly has recorded 95 tackles, 1 sack, 19 passes defensed, and 6 interceptions.
Over the same period, Bailey has 112 tackles, 0 sacks, 17 passes defensed, and 4 interceptions. Granted everyone knows that teams throw against Bly more than Bailey but Bly is not a scrub.

True dat
Rogers was released because he quit on plays. Mistakes are one thing, but this teams biggest problem was going under when the sledding got tough. Safety is a position where the mental maturity NEEDS to be present, or you are just wasting time.
Barrett will start next week, alongside manuel. He needs to bring it, all game long.

You're right Nick
People might also ignore that Bly’s lack of pro bowl talent coincides with Bailey’s last two years of not being a real pro bowl talent (he’ll get in on his name though). In the last two years, we have had little pass rush, and taken safety out of coverage and put him in the box. This hurts both players, but Bly in particular, who plays an underneath style, is built to gamble, and requires a certain safety type (which we should be using as a team anyway, but aren’t). I’m fully in the Bly camp. If we utilized our defense properly, both Bailey and Bly would look like the talents they are.

I agree with what you say about Bailey and Bly but am wondering
do we have the players to utilize our defense properly?

I believe we do.
If we drop two safeties back, we provide cover for our DBs. If the issue is a poor run defense, then we need to fix the front seven. By pulling a safety into the box, we do a little to help the run defense, but sacrifice a lot in pass defense.
In other words, I think we should fix the run problems without adding to the pass problems.

I agree...
Bly has been forced to learn a new style of play, and we play him to his weknesses and not his strengths. He has been a pretty good team leader and never complains.
The only exception I took to him was when he was quoted as saying the Broncos are still top of AFC West and thats what counts. That made me see red afetr such a heartless effort.
But he takes his lumps, speaks to the media and plows on.
He is starting to grow on me, and he, more than any other player, is ebing let down by the scheme we are running.

Bly never complains?
How about when he got fined $30K for complaining about the officiating in the Jacksonville game?
True, he wasn’t complaining about his position on the defense and how he’s not being utilized to his abilities, but if I remember correctly, most everyone on MHR said that he should just shut up and play.

I don't recall the 32 yarder from the Atlanta game
but the 25 yarder where Bly almost made the interception is permanently ingrained in my head because he went for the interception when he was at least one step behind White on the play. He stretched out for it and didn’t even get a finger on the ball and was eliminated from the play because he went for the INT instead of the tackle. That is the part that kills me the most about him. Sure, it may be his style to be the gambler and let the safeties recover for him missing the INT, but he has to understand that our safeties aren’t going to be there to save him and he needs to make sure that if he can’t get to a ball, he needs to make sure he tackles the receiver (not that he has the skills for that, as we all know).
Finally, I don’t give him much credit for picking off that ball against Ryan. The only reason he got it was because everyone else was blitzing and he happened to be the one that was closest to the ball. If he would have been in on the blitz, then JMFW probably would have been the one to come away with the INT. The pass was so bad that he almost could have fair caught it!

An Alfa Romeo is still a great car...
…even if it is misused as an off road racer. I don’t blame the car, I blame the guy who uses the car wrongly. It isn’t Bailey and Bly’s fault that they aren’t being used as the types of CBs that they are. It’s a coaching issue. You can’t wish Bly into being something he isn’t. If Bailey doesn’t look like the pro-bowler he is supposed to in this defense, then how is Bly supposed to (especially getting the extra passes)?
Give these guys just an average pass rush, and he two deep safeties that 30 of 32 teams in the NFL run, and these guys would look as elite as they are.

This wasn’t directed at Denver, however it should after Sunday’s loss to the Raiders. He said something like you need to treat every team as if they are going to come it and whoop you. On any given Sunday anybody can beat anybody and we need to treat every game like that.

But wasn't it a too tough a signal sent to all rookies with Rodgers' release?
…that if you make a mistake you are history… That was Rodgers 1st NFL start, and he was a rookie. How can you give up on your rookies so fast, when your entire D has issues

Agreed.
The problem isn’t the safeties. The only way a lone safety has a prayer is if he is exceptional, and if he is playing in a 46 defense. Any safety in our system is going to look terrible until we pull the strong safety out of the box, and generate at least a minimal pass rush.

Only reason Bly and the rest of our DBs look bad is...
…because our safeties have sucked. Even last year Lynch was too slow. I have been saying this for so long without good safeties even the best of corners can look bad at times. I remember Champ getting burned on some play last year and there was no safety there to help and the guy scored a touchdown and everyone was saying Champ lost a step or two. Champ hasnt lost anything its our safeties that have lost everything. We have the worst safeties in the NFL and it is such an important position on defense. I have been saying this for a long time! If we had 2 elite safeties the entire team would look 10X better! Yes Safeties are that important!!!
