The Miami Loss Fallout
**Hat Tip to NickT84 for this post. Each Week I will promote a couple FanPosts to the Front Page that deal with the previous game. Congrats to NickT who is the first 'winner'! -- TSG
I don't know about the rest of you but I was delighted about Denver's loss to Miami. I was not necessarily happy about the loss (although it wasn't all bad and I will get to that later) but I was thrilled about the things that I did see during the game.
Seconds before the game begun, I was jumping up and down cheering. Why? Because Eddie Royal was back returning the kick. Finally let's let this kid do what we got him to do! And a mere minutes after his first return, we saw the reason we drafted him. 2 plays later, touchdown. We could be playing with Oakland's offense yesterday and have scored a touchdown with that kind of field position. That has to be one of the most overlooked things in football right now is the benefit of field position. Look at some of the best teams right now and look at the special teams. Special teams used to be just depth and backups - I am starting to see a transition to solid players being drafted to make an impact on special teams. With Royal, we have solid foundation for the next several years. Field position is crucial and with our offense only having to go 70 or 65 yards rather than 80+ will make a hell of a difference.
Ryan Torain. I'm glad I finally saw him in a uniform! I was shocked that he did get a couple carries today; did you see that huge brace on his elbow? Something should be said of his ability to carry the ball with that thing.
How about Peyton Hillis yesterday? For some reason, he has been on limited playing time and he was finally involved extensively and rewarded Shanny's blessing with outstanding play. For a guy that is supposed to be a lead blocker, did you see his athletic ability to tip toe by the sideline, his catching ability, his speed, and great awareness? Once we have an established running back in the backfield and have a double headed monster on the same formation, in the words of Matt Cassel, "Oh, goodness."
Karl Paymah played great yesterday. Granted we got thrown all over but remember how everyone was saying that Bly was going to get blown up without Champ and he hardly was thrown too all day. Instead they picked on Paymah and he did great with what he had to work with. By playing soft zone coverage and no safety help over top, all that you can do as a defensive back is make a solid tackle; I did not see Paymah make one sloppy tackle. I was literally jumping and cheering as I watched him drive his helmet into the chest, wrap his arms around the carrier, and drive him to the ground. SOMEBODY taught this kid to tackle and maybe he can show the rest of the defense. When Paymah did have safety help, he makes the gamble and comes up with a key interception and showed some great athletic ability. I feel great about having him as a nickel back or replacement for Bly.
Brandon Marshall is becoming a vocal leader on a team that lacks them. Many people don't like him airing dirty laundry to the public but I say good. In the spring, Jay called out Marshall saying, "He's not my favorite person right now" and what happened out of it? Marshall got his act together. Cutler has been the focus of media attention right now. Whether it's his laser arm, being anointed the quarterback of the future, being compared to John Elway, Shanny professing his love of being able to open up the entire playbook, or overcoming his diabetes and being a role-model. I think that all of this attention has gotten to Cutler and it has affected his play. Look at his abilities; they have not changed from the first three games of the year to the last 5. What has changed? Jay Cutler's decision making. Jay listens to the media just like the rest of us and while Shanny or Bates talking to him might not work, Marshall blasting him in front of 30 million people should. Jay is a young quarterback and it's time to get his act together. Take away the interceptions he has been throwing due to bad decisions rather than outstanding defense, many of the games we lost should be won (JAX, KC, and MIA). Now Jay is young and he will learn and the Miami game should have more of positive effect on him than any other game of his career (and I will get to that later as well).
It may be the sadomasochist in me but I think we have hit rock bottom; and good! The Monday Night loss to New England was hard to stomach and many people thought that was the low of the low. In that game we just got thrashed up and down the field, both offensively and defensively. This recent loss to Miami, we thrashed ourselves. Three turnovers, two of them inside our 40 yard line killed us. Our defense played well when they had their back against the wall with the position the offense put them in. Statistically, this was the worse game running the football we have had. We are turning the ball over like it's the coolest thing since sliced bread. Players are calling out the coaching staff, Marshall is blasting the QB of the future, and fans are pissed. Great! Think how pissed the players are.
Jay Cutler was as responsible for the loss of the Miami game as anyone; we know it, the players know it, the media knows it, and more importantly Jay Cutler knows it. It's one thing when you throw interceptions and everyone else is making mistakes; the defense, the running backs, the coaching staff. It's another thing when the when the defense is trying to do the best that they can without great players, keeps Denver in the game, but Jay Cutler gives the ball right back 3 times. The Miami game should have been won by Denver.
Marine Corps boot camp was one of the most interesting periods of my life and it changed me from a punk 18 year old kid into a responsible, self-accountable, driven man that I am today. Many people say they wouldn't want to do USMC boot camp because, "there is no way I can run that far," or "I can't deal with people screaming at me" or things of that nature. The mental games that the Drill Instructors played with us were the things that turned boys into Marines. They let everyone hit rock bottom, then stand back and watch the "S" hit the proverbial fan. I remember a specific instance when we were dog-tired and the D.I.'s were making us repeat a simple task over and over and over. As we repeated the task, we got tireder and slower and we were doomed to repeat the task. Recruits started to give up, take their time, and resign themselves to their fate of repeating the task. Then something happened; like a synchronous mind, all the recruits just snapped. Recruits were screaming at each other, yelling, calling lackadaisical attitudes out; all the while the D.I.'s just stood with their arms folded, not saying a word, watching a scene that played itself out word for word, action for action, exactly as it played out the cycle before that, and would play out the cycle after that. We as recruits held each other accountable, realized what the D.I.'s were doing, and banded together, and completed the simple task as it should have been done the first time - the D.I.'s said nothing for the rest of the night and were hardly seen as the recruits had a "come to Jesus" meeting.
This is what the Denver Broncos have encountered. We got spanked by New England on Monday Night. Everyone was praising how perfectly timed the bye week was: "we can get healthy," "we can work on our defensive woes," "we can work on stop turning the ball over." Shanny has one of the best records coming out of bye weeks and the players knew it; we all expected to upset Miami; we beat ourselves. Right now those Broncos are screaming at each other, holding each other accountable, and having player meetings with no coaches involved. Thursday night, the Bronco's will play lights out, not turn the ball over, and stomp the Browns. Why? Because the Broncos are once again the underdogs, no one predicts them to win, and everyone is stopping to look at the blood on the highway. The Broncos are on the dark side of the moon right now and are about to slingshot back to Earth...

I agree about Paymah, Royal and Hillis
I am concerned with Cutler’s play and attitude. I hope you are right with respect to Marshall’s comments causing Cutler to pull his head out and start playing up to his capability. If that doesn’t happen Thursday, well let’s just say things won’t look good.
I was disappointed with Torain’s debut. I think it was more the Dolphins defensive scheme and the lack of decent run blocking, but I honestly expected more. I was hoping Shanny would give him a second carry down on the goal line.
Playoff bound!
I mostly agree
I think you are right that Cutler needs to “see the light.” I understand that some things you need shrug off such as INT’s but he is almost Eli Manning-esque in criticism so far as his reaction to INT’s.
I was nervous every carry Torain had; I think it was good that he only got the amount of carries he got. Get him some playing time, exposed to the NFL, and pull him out. It was a shame though because Pittman looked like his ribs still bothered him and it was obvious that Shanny doesn’t trust Hall much anymore and only put him in a couple times and then didn’t give him the ball.

I didn't understand not giving Train a second shot as well
His first carry gained three yards when there was nothing there. He just put his shoulder into it and drove a 3 yard run when any of our other RBs would have hit the pile and fallen backward!
Give the rook a chance to score!

I think it would have...
…sparked more confidence in the running game. I just got the feeling that he wasn’t going to be denied. On the other hand, there was no doubt we needed to get the TD and the play was a thing of beauty. I just think we missed an excellent opportunity to prove we can ram it down people’s throats too.

Yes, but..
…I was real happy to see Torain get into a game. Also happy that he got his feet wet and got out with no problem. Lots of football left (8 games to be exact, which is just as many as we’ve played so far, by an odd coincidence).
If there's gonna be a collison, you better start it. Larry Csonka.
My exact thought at the time.
He got 3 yards out of nothing. Give it to him again. Says a lot when that was one of the longest runs all day.
Playoff bound!
I voted yes, but I wanted to vote no.
I wonder if this team could be imploding right now. In fact, I may not pick Denver this week. Sometimes a fan must hit rock bottom before they too can begin to regain their confidence in the team. And right now, I have more confidence in the Browns ability to score(27 again the Ravens stout defense) than I do with the Broncos ability to score.
Great post though, brought me back from the edge of the abyss there….

I was at the abyss too
Last night I was pounding the beers pretty quickly as Jay was throwing picks like gifts. I started off gloomy but turned cheery once the game got going. Royal got my pumped up and so did Hillis but Jay was there to keep me grounded. I either backed away from the abyss as well or am plummeting without realizing it…

Great Post Nick, rec'd.
I have no gauge for this team right now. I’m not sure if they have hit rock bottom, or will slingshot like you say. Much of the mystery depends on injuries and confidence. Over the next two weeks, we’ll get some guys back and have to do without others. I believe getting Sheffler and Young back on offense should help Jay’s confidence, and losing DJ on defense could shatter the confidence of the already fragile D.
On offense, Selvin must return in the next two weeks. Pittman did not look like he had a whole lot in the tank, Torrian looked like he had not played in over a year, and Hall is not the guy. Adding Selvin to the mix will help tremendously. Sheffler is even more important. He has been Cutler’s favorite target in his short career, and his absence leaves a major hole in the offense and removes a comfortable safety blanket for Jay.
Selvin and Scheffler’s return coupled with the humility that goes along with poor performances, will help Jay in the second half. I totally agree that he was reading his press clippings, it would be hard not to. Let’s just hope he’s mature enough to read them now.
This already poor defense is now decimated by injury. However, there are signs of promise, especially the D-line. Thomas continues to improve. D Rob was causing some trouble up the middle yesterday as well. Kenny Peterson is solid depth. Ek is putting together a great year for himself. Moss made some great plays yesterday and continues to improve greatly. DOOM played to his expected level of excellence. I like what I see up front.
Linebacker and secondary must be keeping Shanny up at night. On the bright side, it will be great to get some youth out there and see what happens. As Nick pointed out, Hillis was huge yesterday, but will Larson or Woodyard step up in a similar fashion? I hope so. On the dark side, losing DJ is a massive blow. It was unsettling yesterday seeing Woodyard and Green out there as Pennington brought his team to the line on that long third down. WW blitzed and was eaten-up by a tackle, and Green gave up the huge play. Man I wish Boss was able to stay healthy. I thought he played great while in there.
The JMFW demotion is confusing to me, but I’d like to see him out there as well. I was thrilled to see Paymah make a big play. I don’t know much about x’s and o’s, but it seems to me that what Nick said was right on. It’s hard for me to blame Paymah for playing soft when that seems to be the coach’s call, but what do I know.
Bottom line is, the division is inconsistent (hell, the entire AFC is inconsistent), and barring complete implosion, this team still has a shot at the crown and the home playoff game that comes with it. The next two weeks are critical. If we lose both, I fear complete implosion and 5-11 are a real possibility. However, if we win just one of the games (I’d give this team a 25% chance in each game) and get some momentum with OAK (75% win chance), NYJ (50/50), and KC (75%) to follow, this team may survive. It shall be interesting.
I wish I didn't agree...
…but I do. Sheffler’s come back should be huge to Jay Cutler. I love Sheffler and think he is and will be a great receiving tight end. However, it’s unfortunate that it seems Jay Cutler’s success coincides with Sheffler’s presence because:
1) Sheffler get’s hurt often
and 2) Jay has so many other toys that a single injury should not limit him as much as it seems to.
I hope that it is simply growing pains and Jay will gain confidence in his other outlets such as Royal, Graham, Hillis, etc.

Actually
I’m not any more so convinced that it is Scheffler himself that brings Cutler success. I think it is the scheme and matchup problems that Scheff faces the defense with. Hillis seemed to play a very “Scheffleresque” role at times this week, and we had some good success at those times. I think it may be that Scheffler’s skilled presence is the straw that broke the camels back as far as offensive weapons go, and a defense just can’t cope. It makes it easy for Jay to find someone open when Scheff (or someone like him) is out there.
Also, Jay likely would have thrown one fewer INT and definitely thrown one more TD if the refs hadn’t absolutely blown a call. That doesn’t make it a great game, but it wasn’t quite as bad as his stats show. It’s pretty clear to me that Cutler has been told (yelled?) to LOOK AWAY FROM MARSHALL FOR A MOMENT, EVEN IF YOU ARE GOING TO THROW TO HIM many, many times over the last couple weeks, and his troubles adjusting to this advice have been very visible.

Marshall not getting thrown to
I think it’s interesting that for weeks everyone here has been saying that Cutler focuses on Marshall too much and has been trying to force it to him. From watching the game yesterday it appeared that Cutler was spreading the ball around more, but with him throwing so wildly, the first 3-4 passes that he threw to Marshall, Brandon didn’t have a chance to catch them. I don’t know if this is what led to BMarsh’s moping off the field or his apparent lack of effort when the ball wasn’t coming to him later in the game or what.
When he short armed that pass across the middle because he heard footsteps (and still flattened the defender) I was pissed! On TV they were commenting (ad nauseum) about how frustrated he was and that the Broncos should just get a quick pass to him and let him do his usual YAC and get into the game. So, Jay does just they say and Marshall makes a half-assed effort at the ball.
Maybe Jay knew knew that keeping Marshall involved in the passing game (to the detriment of all of his other talented receivers) would keep Marshall motivated and working to bust coverages but finally was told by the coaches or figured it out for himself that he was playing with fire by trying to force it to Brandon and decided to try elsewhere for this game. Unfortunately, he was throwing so poorly (or was not communicating properly with his receivers, maybe) that it didn’t matter whether he was focusing on Marshall or not.

sometimes he locks on to Marshall too much. Or he wants to go to intermediate to long routes more than taking what the defense is giving him

Great post
I totally agree, I just wish that the injury bug went away. As every week i will still think my Broncos will dominate. They have it in them to be a great team. .. Wow, watching hillis was insane. What an athlete.. There was a lot in that game to very happy about, I just hate loosing.
For the love of the animals. 24
There were positives
Despite some sloppy play by the offense and the questionable defensive coverage schemes we continue to employ, there were positives from this ugly, ugly game.
Eddie Royal was clutch. The offensive line did another good job of blocking on passing downs (although run blocking remains an issue), Peyton Hillis is looking awfully good for a seventh round pick, and the defense did hold up their end for most of the game.
I think the Fins stand as a good contrast to the Broncos. They’re a 4-4 team that was 1-15 last year so almost anything they accomplish this year is an improvement. They are in full rebuilding mode but they know it. They play hard, they take nothing for granted and although they are still in my view a very average team, they take advantage of opportunities more often than not and that’s what gets them wins.
They take care of business, plain and simple.
The Broncos are a team still in rebuilding mode that continues to have delusions of playoff contention. Perhaps they can and will be a contender this year but in my view Denver needs to shelve talk of playoffs, of Super Bowl runs and focus on the little things. Fundamentals. Make tackles, checkdowns, hit your gaps, do the little things individually that contribute to the team effort and take care of business.
Right now the Broncos seem to be looking down the road at what they hope to accomplish overall and not at what is in front of them which is the individual task at hand, one play at a time.
There’s enough talent on this team to be above average this year, but not with the lack of focus and execution we’re seeing right now. Denver is a couple of drafts away from being a serious contender but as the Dolphins have shown us, regardless of the level of talent on your team what it all comes down to is execution.
An average or poor team that executes has a better chance to win every week than a good team that doesn’t.
Good Points
I agree that they / we need to stop thinking about the playoffs this year. We have to admit that if we do get in, it’s because of a very weak AFC West and unusual AFC this season. Perhaps that is part of Denver’s problems right now; they think that an appearance in the playoffs will be given to them on a silver platter.
Instead we need to focus week to week and win games.

Great Post Nick...,
I hope you are right about rock bottom. I thought our defense did a great job yesterday. When you think about it, without Royal’s return, we could have easily been down 28-zip rather than 13-3.
I hope Jay gets his act straightened out—his tendancy to focus on one reciever is disturbing—maybe a shaded eye guard would help—no easy answer here.
Its about time we got Hillis involved—what a great performance.
and once again—Great Post!!
The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.
Thanks for the compliment
I agree about Jay. I think looking off receivers is something that he will / must learn. This is a skill that all the great quarterbacks today and in the past posses – the ability to control the defense with their eyes.

I'd like to see Larsen moved back to LB
But if he’s going to stay at FB, let’s put Hillis at RB.
If there's gonna be a collison, you better start it. Larry Csonka.
Bradley
Excellent comment. Hillis has always had the (too often overlooked) ability to become a vast receiving threat. He dropped a couple early in the season and I think that they overreacted, but the promotion of Larsen did, apparently, get Hillis back on track.
Given what I saw of Webster yesterday, I’d love to see Larsen bring his hits to MLB. Sadly, it’s unlikely to happen. That being said, bradley, you’ve nailed it – we don’t have enough RBs and Hillis and Larsen would give us the power running game that we really need.
One caveat – too often, MIA was in the backfield almost before the handoff. Whether scheme or hamilton getting doused, we need to fix that quickly. It’s happened too often this year.
Fullbacks Rule
Hamilton got beat...
…on two successive plays, but did the right thing by protecting Cutler by taking a holding call and then a face mask call. Otherwise we might have seen Hackney for the rest of the game.
My big question is why no run game? Is it the line or the RB’s? Or the coaching? Also, you have to give Miami credit – both teams went into the game intent on stopping the run, and both were very good at it.
I’d have liked to see Hillis get a few handoffs.
If there's gonna be a collison, you better start it. Larry Csonka.

Just curious – what was the “simple task” your DI’s kept making you do over again?

Going from formation outside to inside the barracks...
…We had just gotten off of a hump and had heavy packs and were all tired. The DIs had us out in formation afterwards, and were calling “fall-out” and we had to run inside. We weren’t doing it in a timely fashion and a few were dragging affecting the entire group.

Awesome stuff Nick
I disagree only on two points:
1) This isn’t exactly rock bottom, but it IS a moment of truth. From a gamePLAY perspective, this offense needs to get really simple really fast. We can’t run, and we won’t start winning until we can. Bottom line. The moment of truth is that the rest of the league knows this now, unlike the first 3-4 weeks, and now Shanny can’t hide it anymore. Somehow, somebody needs to get it done in the Broncos backfield. Whether that is playing through an injury or setting a record for learning how to contribute, this is on the shoulders of whoever lines up behind Cutler. From a gamePLANNING perspective, this team needs to reach new levels of creativity on offense, because they need to create opportunities for the running game from the most unlikely set of circumstances. Also on defense, they will probably end up getting away from the big cushions by the corners, since DJs injury means that they won’t have the speed and recognition underneath for it to work (and yes, it did work, but only at the beginning of games).
2)Cutler regressing. Cutler is doing fine, when you consider two points: the first is that he no longer has a running game, so even if the the defense isn’t bringing pressure (like MIA selling out to stop the run) the DBs don’t have to worry about run support. He is getting tons of looks from secondaries who only have to gameplan one thing, confusing Cutler. The second point to keep in mind is that at the beginning of the year teams feared the POSSIBILITY of a running game (even though one never materialized) and as a result of creative scheming (such as only requiring Cutler to read half the field) Cutler looked awesome. Remember how surprised we were in teh oakland game that he was THAT good? I mean, we knew he was getting better, but that performance seemed like too much to ask for. Well, it was. It was a result of scheming. Now that teams aren’t fooled by our pseudo-running game, Cutler has been asked to do more with less, and as a result he is forcing things, misreading coverages, locking in on receivers… basically the things that a second year player will do. He still has a couple of weeks before he is “officially” in year three under Shanahan, and that number isn’t a perfect number, but I expect that by the end of the year the things that are going on in the secondary will start becoming old hat to him. Remember that he is seeing things he has never seen before each week. That won’t last forever, and is the biggest reason it takes a few years for QBs to mature in the NFL.
So, as games go on this year, INTs will decrease and the running game will get more effective (hard not to be better than 14 total yards.) The more conservatively the offense plays right now the better, because Cutler simply needs to be protected while this is happening.
Mountains, forest, sea: these render man fierce, but yet do not destroy the man.

RBs or O-Line?
It looked to me that the RBs did not have a chance yesterday. Is this line good enough to run the ball consistently? It used to be— throw anyone back there, holes open up, and the RBs got downfield. I got the feeling Walter Payton would have been ineffective back there yesterday.
It also seemed to me that MIA was stacking the line to stop the run and Jay should have been more productive. This fact was the basis of Marshall’s comments. I agree that Cutler is not necessarily regressing and his mistakes yesterday were the result of confusion, but if a team is putting eight in the box you should have a match up somewhere, no? This is probably more of a coaching problem than a Cutler problem
I didn't see Cutler having any control
at the beginning of the game when he threw the first two picks. It appeared that he was either way off or there was some kind of communication gap between where he thought the receiver should be and where the receiver thought that he should be.
There were WAY too many times where he was throwing to no one (except for the 4 times he hit the Dolphins in the hands – there was one that should have easily been a pick by Yeremiah Bell that he dropped)!

I think you hit the nail on the head with Cutler.
I would also like to see him not get so caught up in all the attention the media gave him, but I think he has learned that lesson now as they will likely desert him and throw him under the bus. Also, don’t buy into him ‘regressing.’ How many picks did John Elway throw in his first three years? How about Brett Favre? Even Peyton Manning? I think he set the record for picks in his first year. He started something like 28, 19, 23, 19, 19. Cutler’s doing better than that.
13-3 next year! Baby!
Speaking of the MSM Deserting Cutler
This is the only mention Peter “I have a man crush on anyone in a patriots uniform” King made about the Broncos in his MMQB write up this morning. This is under is “10 things I didn’t like” section
“e. I guess we anointed Jay Cutler too soon.”
And so the desertion begins…

I saw that too.
I thought about FanShotting it. Peter King is a tool. That’s the first Broncos item in his MMQB in three weeks.
I just hope that once Cutler gets his act back together, he will ignore all the MSM idiots and just focus on football. No more PTI, Best Damn. No more Elway comparisons or publicly calling out players. And no more crying and throwing towels at the officials. Just focus on playing quarterback for the Denver Broncos and winning football games.
13-3 next year! Baby!
I agree to a point
Boot camp was a hard time, mine was a little shorter than yours, but it still instilled whart I am today. Glad it worked for you, my son was changed after he left MCRD SD.
Now please tell me where Marshall called out JC. I have not heard that.
IMO JC’s problem is he is focusing on #15 too much. He heeds to look for the Eddies more and ever Graham, who should be used more. The run game is hurting because of the fumbles and picks. I am still hopefull on this team. The Defense stepped up yesterday and I hope they can keep it up. I would like Sahnny to take over the playcalling. Looks like teams have figured out bates. Also we have to remember JC has not even started 32 games yet. He is still learning. Sure I am upset about the picks, but it will drop as the running game improves. No great QB has ever been overly successfull without some sort of running game to offset the pressure without one. Dan Fouts last 3-4 seasons he was not very good because SD hhad not running game. Phyllis right now is having a good season cuz the threat of LT, who in Denver;s backfield scares other teams right now. I hope it becomes RT, but we will see. Well the 1st half is over. 4-4 is good. Maybe the realistally 4-4 is right on track. There are still 8 games to go. It starts Thursday. Denver controls its fate. On paper the schedule could be daunting. But they have to play sound football. This team is not good enough right now to overcome -3 in the turnover dept, soon they will be,
Sorry for being allover the place. I feel a lot better about this team today than I did 2 weeks ago.
BTW: Did anyone hear Joey Porter call out Marshall, calling him a quitter. I didnt see the game and listened to in on KOA, Porter claimed they got into Marshalls kitchen and he quit. If anyone who watched the game can tell me if it Porter being the POS he is, or is there truth to it?

Good work. I thought that 41-7 would be somewhat of a “bottom” for this team. We obviously had one more layer to go. I hope there are not too many. The poor drafts of the early part of the century are really starting to hurt us.
That’s ok with me. We’re playing for wins, not media publicity....HT 9/11/08
CHARGERS 21
here comes the bolts surviv and win the AFC WEST
after week 9
broncos 4-5 loss to browns 28-20
chargers 4-5 win blow out 35-10
Let's not get ahead of ourselves
The Bolts are AWFUL.
Getting cocky about winning the AFC west is like saying you’re the tallest midget. Unimpressive.
Difference here is that Denver was expected to finish somewhere close to .500 and potentially challenge for a wildcard spot whereas the Bolts were expected to win the west in a landslide and challenge for the Super Bowl.
Who should be more disappointed here?
Bolts are the same thing as the Cowgirls.....

Look, I am the biggest optimist ever when it comes to the Broncos, but let them be what they are. They are an immature, young team with no depth. The Broncos suddenly reek of a team that is unprepared and overmatched on a very consistent basis. I think the coach is going to take some serious heat if he can’t get his players to change the way they are playing. There is a serious attitude issue on both sides of the ball, but moreso on offense. Brandon Marshall was seen as complaining about the defense (specifically Paymah’s alignment), and rightly so, but he’s acting like what people that don’t want to see him succeed expect him to act like, no matter how dead-on correct he was about Paymah. Cutler needs to take responsibility and play and act like the best paid guy on the team. He’s acting like a petulant child. He is acting like a “kid” when the team neads a him to act like a “man”. The offensive line (that isn’t a run-blocking line) combined with the general lack of talent at running back is trulky killing the offense and isn’t helping the passing game at all. Because the opposing defense dosn’t have to worry about giving up big runs, they simply sit back and wait for Kid Cutler to get impatient. Like the past few seasons, Denver has started the “slow-fade” process, but this time I think that the ramifications fo such a poor finish will be far more servere. This team and their attitude has become a running joke to their opponents. Looking at the schedule, I see 2 wins: Oakland and KC. 6-10 is realistic. 10-6 or even 9-7 is not. 8-8 is the best case scenario and that’s a strectch.
I dont think 10-6
is outta the question, but might not be attainable. the push for whatever they want to be starts on Thurday night. I am not totally disagreeing with your assesment but I do feel they can salvage this year still. But tge Broncos HAVE to cut down on the turnovers. They are -11 and have allowed 67 points of those, (i think thats around 30th in the NFL). Denver is not good enough to win that way. I actually feel good about Thursday evening

I don't agree...
The Broncos were at the ‘dark side of the moon" after the JAX and NE game and if they were going to ’slingshot back’ should have already done it.
At least the Nuggets made a blockbuster trade today to give me something else to think about. However as an announcer said during the Nugs playoff run last year, “if it’s this time of year and we’re still talking about how the Nuggets need to step it up on defense then at some point you have to acknowledge that that’s probably not going to happen”. Unfortunately I’m starting to feel that way about the Broncos this season.
GO BRONCOS!!!
and by 'playoff run' I mean of course their zero win throttling at the hands of the Lakers.

COmpletely agree
The definition of insane is: doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result.
The Broncos are insane.
I’m at a loss.
DO we need a new coach?
DO we need some seasoned free agents?
DO we need some higher draft picks?
DO we need better depth?
It feels like there are enough things wrong with the team that we are further out from competing than I had initially though. In the offseason, I thought we would compete for the AFC West in 2009 and AFC CHampionship by 2010.
I don’t think its reasonable to expect a playoff win until 2010.
On the other hand,
before the season started I stated that if we were 4-4 at the halfway point then I thought we’d be set up well for a playoff spot. However, I didn’t think we’d be playing like this and with this many injuries.
GO BRONCOS!!!

One other point....
As far as Tony Scheffler making the impact difference to turn things around, I don’t think so. This has less to do with Cutler not having enough weapons and more to do with the fact that Cutler is having a Sophomore slump. Cutler can, at times, give you the impression of a wily old veteran but the fact remains, he is a 24 year old kid who is learning to play football in the National Football League. Jay Cutler is going to be great in this league, but we must all suffer with him through these early years of struggle. He will succeed and he will be a better quarterback because of these early years. Other than that, the fortunes of this team rests squarely on the shoulders of Jay Cutler. We go only as far as his learning curve.
Here is some interesting stats for you:
Through John Elway’s first 29 games, he was 19-10 behind one of the most vaunted defenses in the NFL. Cutler is a wholly average 13-16 behind one of the most porous defenses statistically in NFL history. That is ultimately the stat that hurts the most, but there are some bright spots to look at. In Elway’s first 29 games, his completion percentage was a JaMarcus Russell-like 52, while Cutler gunslinging at 62. Elway only had THREE seasons in which he completed over 60% of his passes, Cutler finished last season over 60% and is on pace to do so again this season. Not only that, Cutler’s TD to INT ratio after 29 games is 44-29. Not bad. Elway was loose with ball security with a TD to INT ratio of 37-37. This includes yesterdays 3 INT debacle. The bright side is Cutler is managing the game better than Elway did in his first 29 games. Though, after Elway finished 4-6 as a starter in 1983, he did not have a losing record as a starter again until 1990. I would hope to see the same kind of consistency in the future for Cutler.

That's true!
And you can tell that we all at least subconsciously acknowledge that because Cutler gets pretty mush a free pass after a horrendous game. Few people have reemed him despite another multiple INT performance (and I’m not saying they should)!
However, I am ready to reem a very young play caller in Bates. Marshall was right in the fact that Miami was selling out to stop the run and Bates called very few plays to capitalize on that.

If God is not a Bronco fan, then WHY are sunsets Blue and Orange? - Jon Tollerud 5/22/08
Elway and Cutler have some similarities and some differences
The biggest difference I see is Cutler’s inability to deal with poor performace and lack of cool when times get hairy.
I think he’ll improve.
I think he’s the most talented starting QB in the AFC on a week to week basis, but he is having a tough time mentally progressing, being patient, and showing leadership ability.
You can’t really compare the two players. I know that’s our frame of reference as Broncos fans, but we must stop comparing everyone to an ex-Broncos players. These Broncos are nothing like those Broncos.
Those Broncos were a very conservative, run-first, tough, gritty, team with an aggressive and tough defense. The Broncos were somewhat consistent. These Broncos are very inconsistent and show a complete lack of leadership and direction. They cannot control the ball on offense or defense, and unless Denver gets up early, they lose and typically fall behind quickly.
Like Rick Pitino said in Boston…“Larry Bird isn’t walking through that door…Kevin McHale’s not walking through that door”
I’ll say this, we have to stop hoping for “the next” anyone. We’re never gonna have another Elway. We have Jay Cutler. He has different metrics in a different (an more talented) offense that plays in a different league (especially economically) with different rules geared towards the passing game.
Cutler, in this league, in his 3rd year, has a long way to go to be considered anyting more than “an up and comer”.
That is the glaring difference I pointed out...Elway was a winner from the get go...19-10 after 29 games is awesome...
Cutler has to learn how to win ball games when only he can pull things together to get the job done….so far, 13-17…hasn’t happened.
If God is not a Bronco fan, then WHY are sunsets Blue and Orange? - Jon Tollerud 5/22/08
yep, exactly
I don’t think that you can characterize Cutler as a guy who’s not a “winner”, but he definitely needs to lear how to mitigate risk on a broken play.
I keep hoping that he’ll run more often. He tries to do too much w/ his arm sometimes and I know the coaches disagree, but I’d like to seemore scrambling from him.
But, didn't you point out....
…that
Through John Elway’s first 29 games, he was 19-10 behind one of the most vaunted defenses in the NFL.
while
Cutler is a wholly average 13-16 behind one of the most porous defenses statistically in NFL history.
If there's gonna be a collison, you better start it. Larry Csonka.
True....
And Elway did only .500 when the defense sucked during the Wade Phillips’ era…then again those two years under Wade Phillips, he completed 62% of his passes. I wonder if there is a connection between high completion % and .500 seasons. lol
If God is not a Bronco fan, then WHY are sunsets Blue and Orange? - Jon Tollerud 5/22/08
no
In those 2 season denver had a horrible running game. Lets Rod Bernstein, Robert Delpnino, Leonard Russel, Derrick Clark, Reggie Rivers all averaged less than 3.4 ypc. Elway in those 2 seasons was the only person to average over 4 ypc. Thats why denver sucked under wade

I truly believe
the Broncos biggest problem is the turnovers. A team generally gets 8-11 possesions a game. See Denver is givig roughly 3 of those away. So lets say Denver is averaging 10 possesions a game, and they lose 3, so thats 7 chances to score. If they only average 2 punts per game they are now down to 5 scoing possesions. Now if they quit giving the rock away they will be able to score on (lets say) 6-7 of those and then Denver is dropping 30 again. But turnovers ruin the flow.

However, a lot of those turnovers result from 2nd and 3rd and long situations which is a playcalling and execution issue. Also, it indicates a general out-of-syncness (it’s in the dictionary…trust me) of the offense.

I love the optimism but,
I really am worried about us winning another game. The way we have played has been so disappointing. We WILL lose to the Raiders if we keep up this level of play. I have this sinking feeling that the teams on our schedule are actually looking forward to playing us.

I am just bitter and broken
The loss to KC was ok. We never win there anyway. The loss to Jax was hard to take, but ok. They have historically owned us. The loss to NE, I was crushed. We have historically owned them and they don’t have Tom Brady. We should have trounced them and we got trounced. Then we have a bye, and Shanny is always really good coming off the bye, and an average Miami team comes to our house and beats us by 9. What’s worse is I feel like WE beat us. I thought a little optimism would help me but it hasn’t thus far.
Please just keep the positive thoughts coming. I’ll take my meds and hopefully by tomorrow I’ll be back to normal.

Look!
Sometimes a little humility and dose of reality is just what the doctor ordered (for us and the team).
I think this team got very high on themselves and us fans got very high on them too.
It’s time for everyone to settle down…and realize that it’s a long season. We’re still holding onto first place…need to get some things ironed out.
The offensive playcalling has changed. We started the season as a pass first, NE style spread offense and are now an very poor power-I offense. It seems pretty obvious to me that we need to go back to the spread. Honestly, I’ll agree with some folks that the defense has improved somewhat significantly since week one and if they start playing tight on WR could start to make some plays. In other words, in my mind the changes that need to be made are scheme issues and can be fixed immediatedly if the coaches can pull their heads out of the arses. BMarsh may have been wrong to lash out publicly like he did…but his points were dead on. It’s time that the coaches took the responsiblity. Yes…they are not causing the turnovers…however, bad playcalling is putting the offense in a position that is making INTs more likely (i.e. 2nd and 3rd and longs).

I hope you're right
about the dose of reality being a good thing for us. I was definitely in need of it. Heck my signature plainly states “success is a lousy teacher”. As far as the play calling, I will trust that to the coaches. I disagree their heads are in their buttocks. Whenever someone talks about play calling, I will always point to execution. If the players execute the plays, the play calling is great.

I somewhat agree!
However, if the other team is putting 9 guys in the box to stop the run and stopping us for a loss or very short gain every time then you need to adjust. Call some plays to force them out of the box. It seemed like Bates had some kind of ego thing going on where he wanted to prove they could run anyway…well they can’t. ADJUST!!!

Hate to disagree
First off, I agree Hillis and Royal each excelled and it was great to see a FB that was used as a weapon. To me, when it is all said and done in ten years, I think we will look back at the 2008 draft and Hillis will be the steal of that draft, this guy has skills that I haven’t seen since Tom Rathman. That being said, I predeicted a loss because of the simple fact our coaching stinks and that is what is dooming this team. Simple fact, much like the New England game, man to man, position to position, this team has as much if not more talent than New England, or Miami, Yes I know our defense doesn’t have the star power, but outside of Porter and Bell, who on the Miami team do you think is better than our guys? The fact is Shannan and this coaching staff is not getting the talent on this team to play to their abilities. Some may blame it on youth, and maybe there is something to that. But for a supposed QB coach and offenseive “mastermind” this offense has been playing so poorly we really have to question if anyone is actually listening to Shannan or if this team has become tired of the same old. On Defense, once again, we went soft zone and got decimated in the 4th quarter. Why Slowvik and company can’t see what works and what doesn’t is another failing.

Now it is half empty, and the pour on this particular season has just started, I’m afraid. 3-0 start. They have lost 4 of their last 5, and looked pretty horrible for the most part in doing so. Now they’ve even lost their yearly staple, the running game. And DJ Williams is out too? Holy cow, circle the wagons, if there are any left.
I see some building blocks for the future. But this season is toast. San Diego couldn’t possibly match the Bronco’s sucktitude the rest of the way, could they?

Well, If I still lived in Denver then i wouldn’t have to put up with all this, but then, I would have to listen to a lot more Denver fans who are “down in the mouth.” At least around here there seems to be a realy positive attitude, for some reason. I totally agree with you. I voted yes because over the past three games I have not seen any improvement from the offense.
It is interesting that before the season started the question mark was on the defense and now it is on the offense. Something needs to be done to shake this team up. As Guru said in his show on gimick plays. Maybe we need to try a couple on Thursday if we find ourselves in a position to just the Browns for a loop. I am not expecting it all the time just every now and then.

What I see
with Cutler is eagerness. He is dying to show off his “stronger than Elway, hands down” arm and he wants to show how good he is. He is pressing the envelope with his talent, sort of getting ahead of himself. He needs to slow it down and just go over the little things like getting on page with your recievers. Bates Jr. needs to stay away from the down and out, the film on Denver is obvious when they are going to throw that and it is getting jumped often.
royal
agreed we drafted him for the return game, and the play in the last game was huge. but remember why eddie was hurt for a few games, and we had no #2 receiver? he had his clock cleaned on a punt return. knocked him out of the game. several games, really. so do you put him in at returner, or try to keep him healthy at receiver for the next 8+ games? difficult decision. i say you put him back there only when we trail or really need a big return. i don’t see him staying healthy any other way. down the stretch, use him everywhere if we need the game to make the playoffs. my take, anyway
