Broncos place Andre Hall and Michael Pittman on Injured Reserve
BRONCOS ALSO SIGN DT MATTHIAS ASKEW TO PRACTICE SQUAD
The Denver Broncos on Monday placed running backs Andre Hall (left hand) and Michael Pittman (neck) on their reserve/injured list, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. Both players were injured during Denver's game against Miami on Sunday.
The club also on Monday signed defensive tackle Matthias Askew to its practice squad.
Hall, a second-year running back in his second year with the Broncos, saw time in all eight games for Denver this year and registered 35 rushes for 144 yards (4.1 avg.) along with three receptions for 25 yards (8.3 avg.). He also returned a team-high 21 kickoffs for 469 yards (22.3 avg.) and tied for the Broncos' team lead with six special-teams tackles (5 kickoff, 1 punt).
Pittman, an 11th-year running back in his first year with the Broncos, appeared in all eight games (3 starts) for Denver this year and posted 76 rushes for 320 yards (4.2 avg.) with four touchdowns along with 10 receptions for 112 yards (11.2 avg.). He recorded his 11th career 100-yard rushing game with 109 yards on 20 carries (5.5 avg.) during the Broncos' game vs. Jacksonville on Oct. 12.
Askew (6-foot-5, 302 pounds) is a third-year defensive tackle who joins the Broncos' practice squad after competing in the Redskins' 2008 training camp. Selected by Cincinnati in the fourth round (114th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft from Michigan State University, Askew has appeared in six career games (all with the Bengals) and owns six tackles (2 solo) along with one forced fumble. He was a two-time all-state selection at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and was born on July 1, 1982.

This is becoming a nightmare
Over the last couple years, Dove Valley has taken on the appearance of a M*A*S*H unit.
Well, if it gets down to where there’s only one Bronco left, he’s still our Bronco . . .

maybe they'll need to call fans down from the stands
that’s how the 12th man tradition got stated at Texas A&M…called a guy from the stands to be the extra player in case anyone else went down to injury. (he used to play on the team and had quit to do basketball…he just happened to be stat guy for the football team in the press box) But now the student section stands all game to be ready to go in at any time.
Anyway, maybe they will be looking for a few good fans.

This isnt good
i guess that means if selvin cant go then torain will get the start. Although i would like to see torain carry the load i dont think he is ready for that yet. if that happens i dont see us establishing the running game again. this is definetly a cause of concern for our offense

Hall's career as a Bronco is over....
Pittman…we might keep him. Second year in a row that we have seen our Running backfield decimated by injury. Anyone think we need a premier runner in the draft next year?

I am willing to see what Torain can do first. He maybe the next elite running back. Plus I would rather Denver focus on the defense in next years draft.

Durability is a concern with all of our RB....
I suppose, by premier, I mean durable every down back.

I agree
that we need a durable back. Haven’t had that since what, Droughns?? Come to think of it, how old is he….
Realistically though, I would also rather see the next draft focus on defense (Safety then DT then MLB if need be) and try to find more of a diamond in the rough type guy. Maybe not someone who is going to be incredible, but solid enough to put 4.5 YPC for 15 carries, and he can be spelled. Perhaps Torain is this guy. Perhaps not. Selvin has showed he cannot be trusted to be durable. Fumbles McGee is likely done with the Broncos, as well as not durable. Pitman, for all intents and purposes, SHOULD be durable, but he’s no longer in the equation for this year at any rate.
Perhaps some guy like an Asiata from Utah could be drafted. He’s a junior right now so perhaps he won’t be drafted but he would probably be a steal (I am clueless when it comes to the draft however). I’ve been watching this guy run, and he is a major bruiser, shows good vision and great patience waiting for his blocks. I’ve also been surprised at how quick he can squirt upfield for 6-0 235.

Yesterday was Torain's feet wetting experience...
I expect to see him carry another 5-7 times Thursday and then 10-15 the week after that and so on. I just hope he stays healthy all year or he may not be on this team next year.

Can't throw Torain in there right now
He’s had 3 carries in the NFL, for one yard. Those are the only carries he’s had in the last year. His arm is wrapped up. Put Hillis in there, and give him some handoffs – he’ll be great. The kid’s a steal, and he’s healthy.

I am not sold on Hillis as a rb
not at least until his blocking improves. Which is surprising seeing he blocked for McFadden and Jones. But that from what I have read is the reason he hadnt been playing. But the Broncos didnt put RTon IR so he needs to play now

Hillis as RB!
I’d love to see a bruiser like Hillis coming out of our backfield. My philosophy is if you’re not going to get any yards, at least make the guy not want to hit you again.

With Larsen at FB?
or do we move Webster to WILL, put Niko at MIKE and use Woodyard and Larsen as the fourth LB (as needed).
SAM – Winborn
MIKE – Niko, Larsen
WILL – Webster, Woodyard
I think Green may have “uncovered” his shot at getting more playing time by not even making a play on the ball to Ricky Williams. That was just ridiculous!

Hell Yizza!
It sucks because we have lots of potential and on paper should be great with Torain and Alridge on two complete opposite ends of the spectrum and Young somehwere in the middle.
Unfortunately, it does no good if they can’t stay healthy!
This is an interesting question, do you think that Shanny would draft a high running back next year? I think there is general agreement that the first round pick will be spent on defense but what about a second rounder on a RB? What about a blockbuster trade for a RB?
As much the defense has been our achilles heel, look how much the running game has affected us. Can we get it done with who we have currently if they stay healthy?

We need to focus the Defensive side of the ball in the next draft, We need a DT, MLB and Safety and a shut down corner more then a running back

except it'd focus on very high percentage passes...
not the type of passes that an ineffective running game has led too (i.e. 2nd and 3rd and long). We’ll be looking at a lot more 2nd and 5 or less. And as we saw in the fist few weeks, once those passes our working then the running game starts to work (essentially the oppossite of the set up the pass with the run philosophy). I think we are obviously stronger in the passing game than the running game so we might as well emphasize that part of our offense.

Expect Hillis to see time as RB and H Back.
He is BETTER than Hall and Pittman….no doubt in my mind….
I dont think he is a bad blocker….it is he is not an iso-blocking FB.
PLEASE out Larsen in at MLB, Woodyard in for DJ and Winborn.

Shanahan isn't going to do anything risky
I doubt there will be any free agent signings to the active roster.
Hillis and maybe Larsen will both be in for FB, Young, Torain and Pope will be activated at RB.
As far as Hillis getting carries, maybe 2 in the game, typical FB stuff, not because he can’tdo it, but because we aren’t that desparate yet. Hillis has a long ways to go on his FB blocking, and that is more important right now for him.
We will have the same gameplan we had this week: try to establish the run early, even if it is a MASH unit. Young will start, Torain will get up to 10 carries, Pope will be expected to line up as a RB a few times, maybe 2-3 carries, but neither Pope nor Torain will be expected to do much, if any, pass protecting: they are not even close to being ready to protect Cutler from a blitz, and he would be killed if we took the chance.
I am expecting a lot of shotgun for Cutler, probably early in the game, with Graham and Jackson both in to block in the backfield.
The game will looks similar to the last two weeks in terms of playcalling: run, run, pass early. We NEED to convert some first downs. We don’t need to score, but we MUST get some first downs with our running game and start running the clock off from the opening snap. The shorter this game is, the better.
IF we GET some rushing first downs, the sky is the limit, because folks, that will be a balanced offense, and the playbook will be as wide open as it has been since oakland, week 1.
IF we DON’T GET some rushing first downs early, I think the Broncos go with a max protect backfield, shotgun and hurryup offenses, alternating, and try to get Cutler into a rhythm before the first half is over. They can still run screens, and some draws and playaction out of the no huddle, so they don’t need to totally abandon the run.
If they can work on Cutler’s confidence early, than we can make up for a lack of a running game, but the defense will have more than its fair share of work again. If we get some running first downs early, then the defense should get some rest and be dependable at the end of the game. What CLE does isn’t as important as those first few rushing first downs, and an efficient, mistake free Cutler through the first half.
Regardless of all but the most egregious scores, we will be in the game if we have that.
Mountains, forest, sea: these render man fierce, but yet do not destroy the man.

Hi styg
cleveland got torched yesterday by RB ray rice a rookie that is a small guy by stature but has that low
center of gravity and powerfull leg drive to bust most hand tackleing . hillis should be able to bust this
team up with timely screen plays that i hope bates can pull off .
by broncosfaninphilly on Nov 3, 2008 6:12 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
What Denver needs is to set up the screen and dump passes
Look at old SF games, basically they would run short dumps to the RB and FB as their running game, that is what we need, slows down the pass rush and forces coverage underneath, that opens up the deeper stuff and also opens up the running lanes in the middle if guys are forced to cover the edges, you saw the success Hillis had on the edge, that is where we need to focus early. If it gains four yards, then fine, accept it all day long. What defenses have done is to force Cutler to be impatient, and they are winning that battle, what we need to do is take what the defense is giving us and not worry about the bomb until the defense has been sucked up close.

I hope we screen cleveland to death this thursday . Everything else should click from there. It started

This is the time where our passing game
needs to perform and stop the turnovers (if it’s remotly possible). We are not the running team we used to be and now it looks even worse. Somebody will definatly have to step up and I think he wears #22.
Young and Torain is all we got, so I hope Young is good to go. This would be a perfect time to have Scheffler playing. I wonder how is is doing.
