Ask the Blogger: Dawgs By Nature

Hello everybody! This is Chris from over at Dawgs By Nature, your Cleveland Browns affiliate. This is an awkward situation this week, for both of our teams to have two games within four-five days. As I'm trying to preview the Broncos game, I'm also trying to make sure I properly review the Ravens game from Sunday!

With that said, I look forward to any of your questions about the Browns. I'm sure John has provided some savvy input already due to his Cleveland connections, but I'm guessing that won't stop him from rooting for a Broncos victory on gameday.

I have the same question.

The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.

I was a fan of Derek Anderson throughout the entire process this year. Despite his late interception against the Baltimore Ravens, there’s no way I would put the blame all on Anderson for that loss. Right now, though, facts are facts: Anderson for two years cannot get off to great starts on the road, he only completes about 50% of his passes, and he throws a high percentage of interceptions.

Right now, we’re sitting with a 3-5 record with virtually no shot at the postseason unless we run the table (give or take a loss or two). Now, whether Anderson “deserved” to be benched or not goes out the window, because Brady Quinn, through the entire process, was still considered the future of the Browns, and was our projected starter already for next season. Therefore, keeping Anderson in really doesn’t do much except increase his trade value for next season. But, Cleveland has some very passionate fans who won’t stand through that. We wanted Quinn, and we got him.

Overall, I’m fine with the switch. But I would’ve been fine with sticking with Anderson for a little bit longer as well.

Do you think someone high up

was just waiting to pounce on Anderson? The Raven’s game seems like a pretty weak excuse to bench the guy…

by styg50 on Nov 4, 2008 12:51 PM MST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Ravens game alone was not the excuse used to bench him. The given reason was that our numbers offensively for the season were below expectations. If by “someone high up” you mean pressure from people higher up in the Browns’ organization, then I’d say probably not, I doubt there was any pressure.

I think they finally just gave into the fans, in a way. When the fans started chanting BRADY BRADY BRADY for the first time this season in the Ravens game, the QB can’t look forward to home games. That X-factor can only contribute to frustration as a coach, trying to bridge the gap between what you want and what your coaches want.

Question for Broncos fans: does this sound anything similar to when Jay Cutler took over for Jake Plummer? I know Denver had a positive record at the time, but from an outside perspective, I find these situations comparable.

I hope DA doesn’t end up being the “Brees” of this situation. I love Brees.

by rufio on Nov 5, 2008 11:00 AM MST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think that situation is different.

The Brees/Rivers scenario is what we had HOPED for, with Anderson completing the whole season while still performing very well. Instead, Anderson performed nothing like Brees, and has been benched mid-season.

I remember it being more of a 50/50 split in the fans eyes

Lots of people were still backing Jake (and continued even after he was traded) and others were calling for Jay.

I don’t know if there are still people supporting Derek or if everyone is ready for the switch to Quinn.

Very similar indeed.

We did have a positive record, however our offense was stuggling to score points and while I was a fan of Plummer, I think it was a good move. It gave Culter the experience he needed going into the 2007 season and Culter is the guy for the future with Denver.

A lot of us (Browns fans) are happy with the switch.

I, for one, am just happy to get Brady some PT regardless of who is “the starter” or “the guy”. This offseason seems like the deadline to decide who the franchise QB is (or if we need to draft yet another). Simply getting rid of some of the “unknown” factor surrounding Brady is a positive for me. Even if DA was playing like last year, I would have wanted Brady to get some garbage time or something so we (and potential trade partners) could gauge his value. The backup QB is often the fan favorite in Cleveland.

Honestly, if we were going to make the switch at this point in the season, I would have preferred if we were 2-6 or something even more playoff-hopeless.

At this point if we can just eliminate the possibility of the QB controversy, I will be happy.

The best thing

about the whole Jay-Jake mess here in Denver is that when Jake was pulled and Cuts got the start, it was over. It divided the fan base and made enemies out of people who both wanted the same thing—for the broncos to be good. In fact, it was the conflict that gave birth to MHR. Fandom had become lost in partisanship.

I worry for CLE in that just because a decision has been made now, it may not squelch the controversey… How do the fans in CLE feel? Has a decision been made that will be stuck with, or does this feel like unfinished business.

For some, I am sure they think Brady is now our guy and he is the golden boy that will slay dragons on his way to 10 straight years of playoff runs.

I am not quite sold. You are right, this may not totally quiet the controversy, but it is a step that must be taken toward doing so. DA came in last year and lit it up until people got tape on him and since then he hasn’t been the same QB. I worry that Brady will have a lot of success early but then level off or even get worse in a similar fashion.

Really, though, I believe that DA’s contract or Brady’s pride will resolve our QB situation by the draft. I believe DA has a roster bonus in the 5-8million range due around that time. By then we will have to decide to pay him and keep him, or to trade him and go with Brady. Brady will probably not sit quietly on the bench another year getting paid more like a 2nd or 3rd round QB so if we pay DA his roster bonus, I think Brady will start looking to get out of town. We can’t make that decision never having seen Brady play in a real game.

If one thing threatens the Browns’ fan base, its wins. Even if people think we are playing the wrong QB or that Romeo isn’t strict enough they will gladly sit on those concerns if we are winning. We’ve been though a bunch of 4-12 seasons and still sell the stadium out, though. Cleveland loves the Browns.

Dammit broncoboy, you stole my question. So I’ll go with a generic one that we always seem to ask: Who is someone that we’ve never heard of that we need to keep an eye on that will make a big impact during the game? On offense and defense?

That’s tough to say, because you probably know all of our big-name players on offense, and our defense doesn’t have one person in particular that you’ll need to watch out for except Shaun Rogers.

I’ll go with a common answer if you’re a Clevelander: backup running back Jerome Harrison. Every time we put the guy in, he makes a tremendous play either on a reverse, screen, or carry. The problem is, he is not being involved in the gameplan enough. From Week 4 to Week 7 he was finally included more often, but the coaches have basically sat him the past two weeks for God knows what reason. His main drawback is that his blocking ability is nothing worth bragging about — he’s a small guy though.

I live in Cleveland, and I can tell you they don't love us here...

It seems kind of silly to me, because all the Broncos really did was save them from 3 horrific thrashings in the Super Bowl. Browns fans don’t know this, yet, but we all do. It hurts much, much more to lose a Super Bowl than it does to lose an AFC Championship Game.

I wear a Broncos hat often around here, and I get plenty of dirty looks.

What do you consider the strengths and weaknesses of your team?

by hoosierteacher on Nov 4, 2008 11:11 AM MST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

With Quinn, offensive strengths can change now. So, on offense, I’ll be a little more general now.

Offense (Strengths)
-Throwing the ball deep down the field to Edwards
-Putting Cribbs in the Flash package (what we called it before the Wildcat)
-Getting backup TE Steve Heiden several catches over the middle
-Building a lead and running with Jamal Lewis — this only applies to below-average run defenses
-3rd-and-short handoffs to our fullback

Offense (Weaknesses)
-Third down possession receiver — we lost him in Joe Jurevicius
-Running any form of a screen pass, but again, that may have been since Anderson rockets screen passes
-Goal line offense — before last game, we were 1-of-12 from the 1-yard line over a span of two weeks. We don’t have enough to muster it in, but maybe Quinn on an option provides better options now

Dawgs By Nature - Find out why Pittsburgh still sucks.

by ChrisPokorny on Nov 4, 2008 12:30 PM MST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

For strengths I would also add several of our players are versatile guys. Vickers at FB can catch the ball and move better than a Lorenzo Neal-type FB. He played for CU, right?

Heiden can block pretty well and is a deceivingly good receiver.

Jerome Harrison can run and catch the ball. In a variety of ways.

Our receivers are generally big and physical. Cribbs played QB in college, can run, and while he doesn’t have phenomenal hands, you still need to account for him catching the ball. Winslow is another big and physical target. Martin Rucker (rookie TE from Mizzou) is also potentially another 6’5", 260lbs guy who can catch. When our OC is doing his job, the big WRs are used to block down on the opposing front 7 and we can get Joe Thomas upfield.

Our offensive line is also pretty versatile. When they are all healthy they are good pass blockers, athletic enough to run some zone/stretch plays, and can occasionally hit you in the mouth. They will also go unbalanced occasionally and move Joe Thomas to the TE’s spot on the right side with Heiden on the left in his place.

As for weaknesses like Chris said, we have been terrible on the goal line recently, but I chalk it up more due to playcalling and DA’s easy-to-guess snap count (and less to our inability to drive-block). The opposing D was getting a great jump off the ball every time down there, and you just can’t succeed when the other team has a 1/2 second head-start and they know you are running up the gut.

A BIG weakness for us is any WR outside of Braylon (and he is leading the league in drops). Its hard to stay versatile and keep throwing different looks at defenses without any NFL caliber guys behind Edwards. Stallworth is just too injury-prone to be a reliable #2, which is really what we need.

by rufio on Nov 4, 2008 8:33 PM MST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why was a high draft pick spent on Rucker, a TE?

Winslow is easily a top 5 talent at TE, at least when he is healthy. Isn’t Rucker more of a receiving TE, as is Winslow? Does Cleveland expect to lose him through free agency?

by Arctic Bronco on Nov 4, 2008 9:00 PM MST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Winslow is under contract for at least 3 more years, and I believe at least though the year of impending doom where the collective bargaining agreement runs out. He has talked about wanting a new contract, but will probably quiet down about that because he is not playing up to his pro bowl potential this year.

We are worried about his injury status. He has had at least 4 surgeries on the same knee, one of them being the dreaded microfracture surgery. He has had 2 staph infections, I believe one of which was confirmed as being in that same knee. He has to go through a lot of painful treatment and warmup just to practice and plays in pain basically every time he walks on the field.

We didn’t spend a high draft pick on Rucker, we didn’t have high draft picks this past April. We traded our first for the pick to draft Quinn (incidentally at the same exact spot), and our second and third rounders (as well as Leigh Bodden) for Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams. We did trade up to get Rucker in the 4th round. Heiden is getting up in to his 30s, Winslow’s knee is at least 45 years old, and we love big guys who can catch. Plus I think it was a value pick. Here was a guy who was more productive than Kellen Winslow Sr. at a Big 12 school with good NFL potential that we could get in the 4th round.

Zero snaps on offense. Unbelievable. That’s been one of the biggest frustrations among Browns fans this year. (Note: maybe he played a snap or something, but if he did, it was definitely not noticable i.e. maybe he blocked on one play or something).

I am here in Boulder, so I have not seen all of the games. The radio announcers have not mentioned him playing and he has been inactive a lot. He did start the season on the PUP list, so it should have taken him a little bit to get in the mix, but I can’t understand why he isn’t playing now. Seriously, even the slowest man in the world could be our #2 WR right now if he could get and hold on to the ball.

Maybe he will make his debut Thursday.

Heiden is very, very reliable. But, not elite to the point where you say “let’s not play our rookie tight end a little bit”. Heiden’s been with us for a long time, so we already knew what he was capable of.

Defense (Strengths)
-Shaun Rogers in the middle. Don’t. Test. Him. Just, Don’t.
-Not giving up big plays in the passing game. This wasn’t true last week, but that appeared to be because our starting safety was playing with a bad knee.
-Stopping screen plays…not great at it, but not a weakness.
-Safety blitzes. Nice.

Defense (Weaknesses)
-Linebackers can’t tackle. Wimbley will spring around your LT all game but never reach the QB because that’s his only move. D’Qwell Jackson, our best LB, will be in position for plays but not make the Pro Bowl type of tackles.
-Blitzes up the middle from linebackers. If you see this, expect a Cutler TD on the play.
-Our corners give a cushion on certain drives.
-Line up in shotgun and run the draw play to the RB. Guaranteed 100+ yard rushing running back.

How much has the preseason injury to Edwards hurt the Browns and is Stallworth been a mistake, and last one is Winslow gone?

somethings wrong, Trying to conquer these fears i thought were gone. And it's been so long, I'm dying to live in a world i don't belong

by broncfanstuckinsd on Nov 4, 2008 11:34 AM MST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Edwards: I’d love to use that as an excuse (his preseason injury). But, I don’t see how missing three weeks of practice causes you to drop 14 critical passes. Something else is wrong with him — either eye sight of concentration; can’t blame the cut-foot injury anymore.

Stallworth: When he’s in, our offense has been better than at any other point this season. He may not have the # of catches, but he’s always in motion before the snap, and he takes away pressure from other players on their routes. However, due to his injuries, he’s probably been a mistake — then again, what other free agent receiver was available for us to spend cash on?

Winslow: I wouldn’t say he’s gone just yet. If Quinn develops a solid chemistry with him, they can’t just toss that aside. Things will be patched up. Now, if we go 4-12 or something, maybe it’ll be a different story.

Dawgs By Nature - Find out why Pittsburgh still sucks.

Edwards is just in his own head. He is projecting confidence but he doesn’t have it. Unless it is something like an eyesight thing.

Stallworth has been great when he has been healthy. Our only mistake was relying on him and not simply accepting anything he could contribute as a bonus. We need WRs.

Winslow and the Browns have said everything is behind them. He is under contract for a while and we won’t Stephon Marbury him. The fans love his play and passion even when the rest of our team seems to sulk.

No one, at least in regard to fans, has been pleased with Crennel. His head was called for at the start of last season, and the pressure was removed from him because we went 10-6. During that stretch though, at no point did anyone even remotely consider Romeo for coach of the year. He just doesn’t have the “it” factor you look for in a head coach that makes you confident the right decision will be made when the game is on the line.

If a change is made, a lot of us are dying to have Bill Cowher come in.

Cowher...

…played linebacker for the Eagles and Browns (then back the the Eagles). He later coached special teams and then the secondary for the Browns before going to KC as defensive coord.

He’s an incredible motivator, and (despite his defense prowess) is very well rounded in his knowledge of offense, defense, and STs. He’s a player’s coach, and has a rep for being an “in the trenches” kind of guy. Any team that doesn’t have faulty management will see consistent winning years with him as coach.

On Cowher

According to Jeff Fisher, in 1984 in a game between the EAgles and Bears Cowher tackled Fisher on a punt return and broke his leg, and ended Fishers career. But those 2 are real good friends and as fate would have it, he became a willing student to Buddy Ryan and one of the top 3 coaches in the NFL (Shanny and Bellichek)

The only way he stays in Cleveland another season is if Quinn suffers a Tom Brady type of injury and is expected to miss half of next season. For the rest of this year, Anderson needs to show that he can be a team player on the sideline. I think he did enough over the past several weeks to warrant interest from teams like the Vikings and Chiefs in the offseason, for possibly even still a second-round pick.

If we can still get that much for him, I will be quite happy.

What was the deal ?

with your TE kellen winslow and his sickness ? why was the browns front office
so mad at him ? what were they trying to hide or cover up ?

Winslow had a staph infection. It was his second, and he was at least the 5th guy on the Browns to get one. Staph played a role in LeCharles Bently’s setbacks and Joe Jurevicious’ as well. It can kill you.

The Browns hired a company who specializes in getting rid of Staph, handed out literature, and gave presentations to players before this season, based on how many of the players were contracting it.

After a loss, Winslow revealed that his injury was staph and implied that the Browns lied about the nature of the nondisclosure of the injury. He brought up some good points (such as questioning why so many Browns players get staph compared to the rest of the league).

The Browns were angry at Winslow at least for suggesting that they were not taking enough measures to get rid of the infections and by saying he felt like a piece of meat because of how the Browns traded him. They probably didn’t like looking bad; they are after all still having players contract staph infections, and they probably didn’t like him implying that there was something to cover up.

Winslow can be an emotional guy (I’m a soldier, anyone?), but since his humbling motorcycle crash he has been able to channel most of his passion and emotion in to productive avenues, especially his play on the field. Generally, most Browns fans have been happy with him on and off the field since his accident. He has been a good citizen and a good player for the most part. He will get the occasional dumb penalty, but no strip club incidents, no police, not even “atta baby” incidents.

What is different from last year

to this year with the offense since Anderson is being benched in place of Quinn?

I’m a little confused with what you’re asking…but I think you’re asking why has the offense struggled this year when it didn’t last year.

Edwards dropping so many passes has a lot to do with it. A lot of his drops would’ve been first-down catches on third down or touchdowns. I’d actually go as far as believing that if Edwards only had 7 drops this season (as opposed to 14 drops), that our record would be 5-3 or 6-2 right now.

Brady Quinn played like an NFL QB

He was cool under pressure, made good decisions, threw good passes and had good mobility in the pocket. He definitely looks like a keeper.

I don’t have the time for very much college football, but if I did I would be cheering for Notre Dame. So, I am always glad to see Fighting Irish like Quinn and our Harris do good in the NFL.

I agree AB.

It’s only one game but Quinn looked pretty solid.

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

Quinn

Quinn looked great for several reasons.

1. The coaches did a great job with playcalling. His passes were short and high percentage.

2. He showed the kind of awareness in the pocket and moves (again, in the pocket) that an elite pro-bowler would have. He showed amazing ability to avoid tackles with very little footwork, and that’s a very, very talent.

3. He was calm. Very few QBs this young have the kind of nerves that Quinn displayed.

4. With all respect to Dave (our guest from the Falcons), I thought Quinn did an amazing job of reading defenses. I was able to catch two sharp audibles to adjust for the defense, and he correctly checked down for rolling zones just about every time.

5. I’m not taking anything from Quinn with this point (and I hope the above points make that clear. Quinn is a keeper with a great future). But Quinn also benefited from playing against a banged up and average defense. Denver’s defense did well enough, but Quinn still needs to face stiffer competition.

I thought it was foolish to switch QBs in a short week. In fact, I still do. Crennel rolled the dice and ended up doing the right thing. All in all, I think the Brown’s fans can get excited about this guy.

All respect taken

To be honest, I only caught about half the game, so it’s very likely I simply missed those plays where he looked sharp in that regard. I wish Quinn luck.

The biggest respect I can pay you.

I’m probably picking the Falcons over Denver this week. It will be my first pick against Denver this season. I hope I get it wrong!

Thanks again for all of your great answers on the “Ask Dave” post.
