Al Davis Has Completely Lost It, Wants To Cut DeAngelo Hall and Javon Walker
As soon as I thing that I have heard of everything in regards to Al Davis and how he runs the Raiders, something like this pops up --
Angered by the Oakland Raiders' 2-6 start, team owner Al Davis asked his front office staff to explore the possibility of releasing several players, including cornerback DeAngelo Hall, according to multiple sources.
The Raiders are expected to release Hall on Wednesday, sources told ESPN's Michael Smith.
The process started on Monday, a day after the Raiders' embarrassing 24-0 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Davis, looking ahead to rest of the season and to 2009, asked his staff to study a list of potential players who could be let go before the end of the week or after the season, sources said.
One source said the list included more than a dozen names. The Raiders' front-office staff studied the cap consequences of releasing high-priced veteran players. He also wanted his staff to see if other teams might claim any of these players on waivers.
The team was planning on making the move to release Hall on Tuesday before holding off, according to NFL.com. The Raiders have paid Hall $8 million for eight games, and also gave Atlanta a second-round pick for his services.
NFL.com reported the move to waive him now helps the Raiders avoid paying Hall $16 million worth of injury-guaranteed bonuses in his contract.
Hall has 48 tackles and three interceptions for the Raiders, including a season-high eight tackles last week against the Falcons.
Hall isn't the only Raider under consideration for release. Wide receiver Javon Walker received an $11 million signing bonus and a $1 million base salary this year, but he has only 13 catches in his first seven games with the Raiders. The other players on Davis' list are unknown.
At his Monday press conference, interim Raiders coach Tom Cable said he was thinking of making more changes in the starting lineup. Since taking over for Lane Kiffin, Cable has benched wide receiver Ronald Curry and safety Michael Huff. If Davis gets his way, some changes might be permanent.
It is now complete meltdown mode in Oakland. So much so that had I not disowned the Raiders as a real rival to the Broncos, and as an NFL franchise at all, I might feel bad for the fans.
If you are a Raiders fan, or know one, tell them to abandon ship NOW. We will welcome you over here with open arms!

Is it just me...
Or should we pick up Hall if we can make it work in the cap? It seems players who get pissed at one franchise in this rivalry often end up with the other. And Lord knows he’d be better than Paymah.

I would definately bring Hall in, especially since Champ is hurt. He has a lot of talent. It’s just not showing in Oakland. I wonder why?

Hall couldnt cover anyone with a bucket of paint so far this season. Granted he may be as good as bly, but IMO Hall is a cancer. At least Bly is a team player. I would rather struggle with Bly and have a good locker room than have Hall and a bad locker rookm

Right.
The best way out of the mess is to keep them, and try to make a trade in the offseason (or keep them, trade away the high picks for future picks, and try to save as much money as possible). Either way, the team is heading for financial disaster. But cutting these guys in the first year of their contracts is salary cap suicide.

You get those guys, and only are responsible for the base salary. You don’t have to pay any of the bonuses (which is sizable).

Actually...
Hall’s deal isn’t that cap unfriendly. He was paid $8 million dollars for playing 8 games. His salary was only $1 million, so he’d cost about $470k for the rest of this year. The big kicker is the injury guarantee – $16.5 million – that Hall would be paid should he get seriously injured.

however now they are short a corner and lost two draft picks…….nice.
I don’t think they will be quite lucky should they get rid of Walker though. If they do then Shanny should call Davis and say “I told you so.”

I think we should look at Hall.
He is young and talented. Champ wouldnt put up with any of his attitude and maybe that would be a good thing for Hall. He is as good a cover corner as Bly and is a much better tackler. He would do alot for us to make up the slack until Champ is back and maybe even take the starting job from Bly. I hope we make this happen.

How Delightful
Believe it or not I have not given up on the Broncos, but let’s be clear – they’re a thoroughly average team right now, if that.
But as someone mentioned, it is always good to know that there’s no way possible Denver can finish any worse than second place in the AFC West under any circumstances.
Thanks Al, for giving us all in Denver something to enjoy and mock. By the way, you’d better start thinking how you’re going to get out of paying Tom Cable what you owe him after you run him out of town.

I would take Hall for the rest of this year only.
He has a $1 million base salary (and maybe some incentives). The Broncos could cut him after the season without taking a cap hit.
Of course the reason that Al Davis would wait to cut Hall is to make sure that he will not not have cleared waivers before the Broncos have to set their lineup for the Browns game on Thursday.

That sounds like the best option to me
Use him for the rest of this year (especially against the faders), see how he works out, see if he’s any better than what we saw against Royal with Cheese and if nothing improves, drop him at the end of the year.

I was at the Raiders @ Baltimore game...
…and watched a thouroughly defeated wife half-heartedly cheer for the Raiders. I even heard her go so far as to say, “It’s stuff like this that makes me want to be a Denver fan.” She’s closer now than she’s ever been (that’s what she said).
When I think of the Raiders organization, I think of the Star Ship Enterprise bridge with sparks flying, chairs falling over, the red-shirted Ensign dying in agony, Spock sitting calmly, and Scotty screaming in the background, “I’M GIVIN’ ’ER ALL I GOT ’APTAIN!!!!”

I wrote about getting Hall back in December.
Here were my thoughts back then.
Here’s the deal. Folks will argue about Hall, but he’s done well for the raider’s (as you can read in Guru’s excerpt), and he remains a much, much better than average CB. Here are the plusses and minuses as I see them:
Positives:
He’s very good
He has a score to settle (especially against oakland)
He’s young enough to offset the upcoming Bailey / Bly contract nightmares
Negatives:
Until we get a pass rush and 2 safeties out of the box, even Bailey would look average
There will be a bidding war for Hall’s services
Injury prone Walker (and attitude problems) would be a definite no.
~~~~~
What I love about this scenario is that, once again Al Davis has proven to the world that he spends too much money and destroys his team in the process. I wrote a couple of posts awhile back about the salary cap hell that Al was moving towards, and there are always several oakland fans that want to argue the point. Well even Al is conceeding his foolishness now.
The best part? Al will get a salary cap hit for cutting these guys in their first years. In other words, he is going to be paying these guys hefty sums after they’re gone.
These aren’t even bad business decisions. They are the moves of a man who is clearly mentaly ill (no sarcasm intended). I wonder if it will reach a point where the NFL will have to use franchise powers to remove him as an owner for the sake of the team?
dont you think
his neagative influence should be considered?
Look how much better the Atlanta locker room is now. He quit on the faders. What makes anyone think he wont if he comes to Denver. Granted is has skillz, but in all honestly is the damage he could do inside the locker room more important that what little he could provide on the field?
A lot of attitude depends on...
…where a person is. If Hall has personal issues, we shouldn’t take him. But plenty of reasonable, young players would havea hard time having a good attitude in places like oakland (which is an asylum of sorts) and ATL, where the former coach screwed the team over in a myriad of ways.
I say if there is limited risk, then why not take a shot
If he continues his act in Denver, then send him his walking papers, no big deal. As long as we don’t pick up his contract and can release him without any ramafications to our cap space, then I say let’s at least see if he wants to change his ways and attitude.
Honestly
after getting completly embarrassed during the Bronco game Hall has been playing pretty good (still not worth the amount of money paid), up until the Falcon’s game where he got burned several times. I think he wanted to play well but after that touchdown we lost him and he was done for the day. He could be a great pickup for you guys because you have a stability. Until we get that with our coaching staff we will be lucky to be mediocre. Hall has talent and can excell in the right situation but his problem was that he played with a great cornerback. Nnamdi like Champ barely see’s balls thrown his way so Hall was exposed alot more.
I think I kinda like the idea
His nickname at Va. Tech was/is MEangelo Hall. He definitely has a bad attitude. That was obvious during the first game of the year when Eddie was toasting him all game. And I am always weary off signing guys like that. But I think this may be a good idea if we could pull it off. He is young. He is really, really fast. He plays the corner position really well for the most part. It really would be sweet to have a corner threesome of Bailey, Bly, and Hall. That would rival Brown, Samuel, and Sheppard in Philly. I know what you are thinking…“it doesn’t matter how good our corners are if we can’t rush the passer”. I totally agree. Don’t look now, but our pass rush is pretty dog gone good. I just looked it up and couldn’t believe what I saw. We have 20 sacks? Good for 9th in the league? Did I read that right? Someone correct me if I’m wrong. I’m digressing, my bad. So I think it would be good to pick up Meangelo.
What about Huff at safety
Wasn’t he a former first round pick? He can’t be any worse than what we have.
I should clarify, though, that at this point he has not been mentioned as a possible cut, just that the Raiders coaches submitted a list of players to Al that could be cut. So I’m thinking, they keep benching this guy, would his name actually be off the list?
But here again...
…Does it matter who we get if we misuse them? No safety is going to look good in our “one in the box” set-up. If we built a true 46 defense, that would be different. But we aren’t running a 46, and the safeties (and CBs) are paying the price.
When does any one think we could see a decision on this? I guarntee somebody is going to pick him up. His attitude should have a factor but only if it is so bad he can’t get over himself.
