For the fourth time this season, Denver is expected to place a running back on injured reserve.

This time, rookie running back Ryan Torain has been lost with what is thought to be a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Torain will undergo more testing this weekend but the prognosis is not good.

The running back who was being asked to replace Michael Pittman and Andre Hall — who went on injured reserve last week — probably now will join them and Anthony Aldridge, who went on IR after the preseason. He hurt his left knee during the second quarter of Thursday night’s dramatic come-from-behind victory over Cleveland.

The shame of it for Denver is that Torain was effective in the first half. He had 12 rushes for 68 yards (5.7 avg., 19-yard long), with one touchdown before leaving the game.

Wow

This sucks incredibly.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

by KTJ on Nov 6, 2008 11:50 PM MST reply actions

I Feel sorry for Torain

He just got back from the elbow thing and was all excited to get out and play again. And after 12 impressive carries he gets injured. That has to hurt. This is really disappointing because he was running the ball so good in the first half. He had our running game going again and now it is done. Now we do not have any RB that we started the season with, How often does this happen. so who is available at RB. We could use Hillis who has really impressed me. He is a little bigger then Torain but his 40 time is about the same. I know 40 times dont mean anything but he is like 20 pounds bigger then Torain and runs the same 40 which is impressive.

Just some names that are still out there, Mike Bell, Tatum Bell, They know our system but fumble all the time. Ron Dayne also knows our system.

I do not know where to turn. It is too bad Alexander and Benson got signed because they would have been the best options. Its also past the trade deadline. We are going to have to rely on Hillis, Pope, maybe we can pick some guy off of someones practice squad.

This is not good at all. Cutler looked really good at the end of the game without a running back but we cannot use 4-5 WR sets and never run the ball. We cannot win all of our ball games like this.

That sucks. Just heard in on NFL Network

I am bummed, however I will give him props for stepping in and taking the load and also glad he finally got his first NFL touchdown.

I guess it’s Pope’s turn now. I am sure we’ll pick up somebody in the next few days.

Too Bad

the Jags Kept Chauncey Washington on their active roster. He would have been a steal off their practice squad

Shanny won’t have a 1000 yard rusher this year. Sad. I think we’ll still run the ball well, just not great.

Insanity is just a state of mind.

This sucks....

We have having some bad luck, but my heart goes out ot Torain. Why do some guys just get injured ALL the time?
Keep your head up Ryan, you will be good and get thru this.
On another note, perhaps a lesson learned on drafting and signing “steals” with injury historys. It’s coming back to bite us in the ass.
I say Hillis for RB.

I would like to see Cory Boyd brought in....

I was high on this kid before the draft, and i am stoked we picked him up.
He is big, strong and elusive. He has had it tough growing up, and has succeeded. He would be a great fit for our running game.
Check this clip out of a run of his:

Here is his scouting report:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2008/draft/players/30515.html

He will be a great fit for us, and we should bring him in now we have a break to get him used to the system!

by boydy2669 on Nov 7, 2008 6:48 AM MST reply actions

he stutter steps too much for our system...

great running ability, but how will he do in the one cut and go style? Although if we could get him in to “space” he would be better than the options we have now

by Sneaky Sean on Nov 7, 2008 6:59 AM MST up reply actions

Doesn't sound like he has the speed to get to the corner

but is a punishing inside runner.

(I can’t view the video at work so can’t comment on his “stutter step”)

You have hit your marks my son. Long shots do not always come in. Sometimes you need to pick the favourite. Now is the time for Denver to pick a favourite. I believe in a good days pay for a good days work. if you don’t finish the day you don’t get paid.

For the love of.

B.S. – Thank you so very much!!!!! Whats the definition of a ‘professional athlete’ ???
Obviously not someone who gets paid to play a sport. ala Brandon " I care more about my own antics than my teams objectives" Marshall. Can someone please tell me why some players on ‘defense’ stomp their feet and wave their arms in the air when they finally make a play. Save your energy please and use it on the next play as all the arm waving and stomping is making you dizzzzzzzzzzzzzy #51

by DOWNUNDRTHNDR on Nov 7, 2008 8:29 AM MST reply actions

Had this discussion last night about #51...

and I was convinced by the merman that in some respects there is a need for this…I don’t think #51 is a rah rah look at me guy, I think it is more a case of just trying to bring some energy, any energy to a defense that sorely lacks in this department.

Cory Boyd

hey boydy2669 i hope you have more footage, as that you tube thing doesn’t give me the warm and fuzzies. Don’t mean to be rude but this is the NFL. Show me him getting up after taking a hit from cle, jackso, oak, sandie, anyone. Don’t get me wrong I WANT TO BELIEVE. What did you guys think of Karl Paymahs’ performance. TJ, you think i’m out of place???

by DOWNUNDRTHNDR on Nov 7, 2008 8:42 AM MST reply actions

Paymah's stop on the goal line

showed how much better a tackler he is than Bly could ever hope to be.

In the first half I’m sure he had the most tackles on the team (not a good sign when the other team is running) but I think he did a great job!

I agree, let these young guys ava go. Get Boyd out there. Thanks for the youtube tip

by DOWNUNDRTHNDR on Nov 7, 2008 2:49 PM MST up reply actions

Boyd comes from the SEC. They play tough defense there

I am pretty sure he can take a hit and I think his style is a good match for Denver’s scheme. I mentioned this on another thread, but here is the full quote from his NFL.com draft profile

Compares To: OLANDIS GARY-ex-Denver…Boyd is an efficient north-south runner with some hip shake and lateral agility to redirect to the cutback lanes, but lacks explosion coming out of his stance, the result of getting too erect before dropping his pads at contact. He is a capable safety-valve type receiver or as a receiver on screens out of the backfield. He will never win a foot race in the open field and needs to add more bulk to his frame. He runs hot and cold as a blocker, but some teams could look to use him like Justin Griffith as a “tweener” fullback, a position he has experience playing earlier in his career.

by MattR on Nov 7, 2008 2:01 PM MST up reply actions

OK... I like that

Or at least, I could accept that for the rest of the year. So it looks like Selvin will start, with Hillis getting significant action and Pope and this Boyd guy doing what Selvin should be doing. Awesome. What is the scouting report on Pope?

THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

I was so excited watching him run in the first half and I was thinkin to myself,“This guy could accually save the running game!” I am so disappointed and frustrated with all the injuries the Broncos have had this season. I guess its just not our year to stay healthy. Well now i guess we are just going to have to rely on Peyton Hillis. He is a very punishing runner, but i think we need another body out there, too. Is there and free agents we could sign???

we will only sign scrubs…since that is all there is on the market right now.

We've got...

Hillis, Selvin, P.J. Pope, Spencer Larsen, and Cory Boyd. Hell, Jay looked good running the ball last night, let’s put him back there and Hackney at QB. Or Hackney at RB. We could even give Lichtensteiger a shot in short yardage. Hell, Mike Leach can do anything, right? He could take the snap, hand it off to himself, pass to himself, and have a rushing/passing/receiving touchdown all in one play. Imagine the fantasy value!

by bradley on Nov 7, 2008 12:37 PM MST reply actions

I wouldn't

Torain is good, but he’s not worth a win, and especially this one. We will have to wait and see how the team responds, but this win sure feels like it was Jay Cutler’s coming out party with the massive fourth quarter, ala Elway and “The Drive”, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything…
