Actually, I'm just here to answer your questions. What do you need to know about the Atlanta Falcons in order to get on with your lives? Do you desire the knowledge that will allow Jay Cutler to throw for 400 yards again? Do you just have Michael Turner on your fantasy team and want to know how he's going to do? No matter what the question, you've come to the right place.

Dave--you guys must be full of special joy with how your team has turned around--
not only Matt Ryan but the team as a whole. Being a Bronco fan that lives in Seahawk country I have two questions.
What do Atlanta fans think of Jason Elam?
What do Atlanta fans think of Jim Zorn?
Zorn was the first Seattle QB to beat the Broncos—back when they were in our division.

Confused about the Zorn part of that question
But I’ll plow ahead.
We love Elam. The guy’s missed a couple of field goals this year, but he carried us through the first couple weeks when we were still finding our offensive identity. Great signing for us.
Zorn I think is a talented coach, and the Redskins made the right move getting someone who has more talent than name recognition. His offensive philosophy is a little timid for my liking, but there’s no doubt that the team has improved under him.

Thanks Dave, maybe it was Dave Kreig to Largent that first took us out
I’m a little surprized Zorn is conservative—Seattle was known for trying evry trick play in the book back then.
Elam is just special—not only as a kicker—but as a person.

What are the Strengths and Weaknesses of the Falcons?
by RiG on Nov 9, 2008 5:29 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
Classic question
Strengths: One of the best young quarterbacks in the league (Matt Ryan), a bruising running attack led by Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood, one of the league’s best receivers (Roddy White), a competent offensive line, sackmaster John Abraham, an opportunistic secondary and a steady kicker. Oh, and there’s our rookie head coach, who probably deserves the most credit of all.
Weaknesses: We tend to fade offensively in the second half of games. The Falcons also have only a fair defense and tend to give up gobs of yardage. Hard to say what they’ll do when expectations actually catch up with their level of play, too.

Better today
We put Domonique Foxworth in our starting lineup; I believe you guys may have heard of him. He was pretty good today. We have some ballhawks at cornerback, though almost all of them are young guys who struggle against elite options.
The real anchor of our secondary so far is safety Erik Coleman, who seems to be near the play constantly. Lawyer Milloy ain’t bad, but he’s not as young as he used to be.

I think Dever fans are still a little confused about why we dumped Fox.
Especially now with Champ out…I think it was contract related.

Our linebackers are very good
Though they’ve had precious few chances to turn that into tangible results. They’re playing a little softer in this defense, and Michael Boley in particular is a beast in pass coverage. You’re going to have to air it out, but I don’t like Cutler’s chances of making it through the game without throwing at least two picks.

A draft pick? Maybe?
I think the deal was that his contract was up at the end of this year and the Broncos weren’t going to resign him. Therefore, by trading him this year we could at least get a draft pick…but if we had waited we wouldn’t get anything.

I would lock down Turner
Norwood will beat you for a couple of big gains, but that’s pretty much unavoidable if you’re going to plug up the middle against Turner. Once you’ve done that, the Falcons will be forced to throw. The only way to stop Matt Ryan effectively—especially with Champ out—is to put constant pressure on him.
In short, put a lot of guys up front and blitz unexpectedly. That’s the most effective way to do it.
by Dave the Falconer on Nov 9, 2008 5:49 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Decent
We’re hurting without rookie LT Sam Baker, who is been our best thus far. Still, young LG Justin Blalock and the group have done a good job protecting Ryan while he’s out. They struggle a little with run blocking.
by Dave the Falconer on Nov 9, 2008 7:25 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Talent at running back
Plain and simple. Michael Turner is capable of busting tackles and is a load for any defensive end in this league when he deigns to go outside. Jerious Norwood gets open space and runs forever. Our third stringer, Jason Snelling, is also a complete bull. We have a very strong rushing attack because we have very strong backs.

What were the reasons you lost the 3 games you lost?
by RiG on Nov 9, 2008 6:05 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
It was because we couldn't get the offense going
If we can’t thrive on offense, our defense isn’t quite good enough to limit the other teams. That’s especially a concern against the Broncos, who obviously have one of the league’s strongest passing attacks.

Who were your two worst draft choices from the last two drafts?
by Arctic Bronco on Nov 9, 2008 6:05 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
Ah, memories
As strange as it sounds, one of our worst picks was LB Robert James in the fifth round of this last year’s draft. We didn’t need another linebacker—we arguably really needed a defensive tackle or guard—and he didn’t do much before getting hurt and placed on injured/waived. Bummer.
The 2007 draft was a toss-up. WR Laurent Robinson has been incredibly limited by injuries, but he does still have considerable potential. TE Martrez Milner was a total bust and is now practice squadding for the Giants.

Vick and Petrino were terrible storylines
but presumably they buried storylines of good players doing good things for the Falcons. Has anything good carried over from that team and helped the birds be successful this year? Anything bad carry over that you wish the team would shake off? Or was the split between that Falcons team and this Falcoms team a complete overhaul, with only insignificant carry over?
Also, before this season began, barring hedged expectations for a rookie QB, what was the fans take on the team this year? Did you suspect that it would be better than advertised?

To be honest
This is not the same team. The Falcons of last year are gone, and so are many of our entrenched starters. Even those who remain have been conditioned to adapt what Mike Smith calls the “process,” which is kind of like a secret recipe at a restaurant. You don’t know what it is, but the results are delicious.
And no, very few fans thought this was going to happen. I was among the doubters, and I have to give credit to the few of those who really thought this was possible. I love the Falcons as much as anyone. I just didn’t give them the credit.

We're a very good home team
The Georgia Dome can be extremely loud and our guys are comfortable there. I don’t think it’s any more complicated than that.
That said, there are teams that could take us at home. The Giants, Titans and Steelers spring readily to mind because of their particular blend of defense and a crushing running game. Not too many I’d say would have an easy time beyond that.

Ownership
Wasn’t great until this year. Arthur Blank finally put his pride aside and just hired a guy (NE’s Thomas Dimitroff) who he thought could run the franchise. The front office has been nothing less than magnificent this year, but I would like to see a little more attention to positions of need in the off-season. Very happy, though.

Matt Ryan
I know with Turner having a big year has certainly helped with Ryan’s passing game. Why do you think Ryan has been so successful? Is the offense scaled to fit him and his strengths or has he just been able to adapt to the NFL level very well? Just wanting to know what you think is his biggest strength. Oh, and thanks in advance for your answers and here is to a good healthy game next week.

Both
He’s got a killer arm, a deft touch and is thoroughly unshakable. The Falcons have given him a decent line and an excellent running game, and he’s just killing defense this year.
His biggest strength is his decision making, and it helps that he has Roddy White to throw to. Kid’s destined for great things.

Did you see Brady Quinn's first start on Thursday?
Seems to me that Quinn’s best traits were his quick (and correct) decisions, and his ability to hang in until the last second. Is this similar to what you are saying about Ryan? Any differences between the two of them spring to mind?
Also, True or False: Roddy White is a top 5 WR in this league…

Quinn looked good
Difficult for me to admit because I don’t care for Brady Quinn. I think the biggest difference is that Matt Ryan is always reading the defense, whereas Quinn so far looks to me as though he’s simply willing to hang on and take a hit. Still, he could be very good in time.
False. He’s been absolutely stellar this year, but I want to give him a little more time. Top 10 or Top 15? Sure looks like it.

We have a basic 4-3 defense
Most of our pressure on defense comes off the edges. The pass coverage is largely managed through effective man-to-man coverage, but our backs communicate well and the safeties help well.
On offense, we run a metric buttload of plays. We occasionally roll out the Wildcat, we’re very fond of trick runs and the shotgun is employed sporadically. You’ll see a lot of different looks this weekend.

He’s starting to audible with greater confidence, which is giving him a leg up. That unflappable nature of his has kept him in charge of any situation we’ve thrown him into, and it doesn’t hurt that he can huck it when we’re running out of time.

Our guys are good enough to play man-to-man on most TEs and RBs, and can be called upon to do so. Keith Brooking is less proficient man-to-man, but that hasn’t exactly stopped the coaching staff from using him. For your purposes, you’re likely to see more man-to-man this weekend.

Could you talk about the NFC south a little bit?
Around here we both cherish and hate our longstanding rivalries with the faders, chargers and chefs. How does the NFC south do business? Any personal distaste or admiration that you personally bring to the table for any of them?
We have already taken the saints best shot, and we played perhaps our best game of the year, from a defensive standpoint against Bucs. Can you compare the magnitude of those two matchups with what we face in ATL, and (if you feel qualified to comment) also in CAR?
Awesome responses so far, by the way! Any chance we will get to hear you live wednesday night on MHR radio?

I hate the Bucs
Can’t explain why, but I both detest and loathe them. I dislike the Saints too, and I’m relatively indifferent toward the Panthers. Except when they win. Then I hate them too.
Saints fans really don’t like the Falcons and Bucs fans aren’t generally very fond of us either. I think most Panthers fans don’t have quite enough history to feel the same way. Except when they lose. Then they hate us too.
Atlanta will give you a cross between the Bucs and the Saints. The defense is competent enough to hurt you, but it’s hardly a juggernaut. Our offense is fairly high-flying, but it’s not quite the same caliber as the Saints’. I think it’s our balance that really makes us a great team. The Panthers simply have a lot of great pieces and are still the class of the NFC South right now.
I’d love to show up on MHR Radio, but I do work a night shift. Might be tricky to finagle that unless it was pre-recorded.

ATL was running the zoneblock on the offensive line awhile back.
Alex Gibbs helped to set it up.
While every team will use a rare zoneblock play, Denver, Oakland, GB, and Hou use it all of the time, and CAR started using it last year. Other teams try it and drop it (BUF for example).
It seems to me that ATL has been moving away from the ZB. Is that correct?

That is true
We’re employing a more traditional blocking scheme that utilizes bigger, slower linemen. Guys like C Todd McClure have now been through shifts to zone blocking and back again, but some of our smaller and nimbler linemen are now playing for other teams.
Zone blocking worked very well in the Warrick Dunn and T.J. Duckett days, but our talent at running back is making it less of a necessity.

DUFFMAN CAN’T BREATHE! OH NO!
But you had a question. DeAngelo Hall has talent, but his attitude and style of play make him pretty much useless as an upper echelon cornerback. He doesn’t see why he shouldn’t freelance, he’s not much of a tackler and he will always go for the ball. That results in a lot of passes whizzing over his head to wide open wide receivers who then chug down the field for lots of yardage or touchdowns.
The Raiders simply weren’t willing to pay him, while the Falcons got rid of him because he was practically poisoning the water fountains in Atlanta. He demanded to be traded to a quality football team and then revealed himself as the money grubber we thought he was when he gladly took a huge contract from the Raiders. So to sum up, he was expensive, a loudmouth and wasn’t anywhere near a true #1 corner.

He’s gotten me about 20 points per game for me this year, though I have noticed a pattern. Every other week, he has an awesome game, and every other week he’s below average. This week, judging by that pattern, he will have an awesome game. Have you noticed that pattern, and what do you attribute it to?
Also, I would like to thank midseason pickup Roddy White for saving my WR corps (and whoever was so foolish as to cut him). I was relying on Sidney Rice and Donald Driver before. Ugh.

Is that Turner fades against quality run defenses. I think that’s something that will change with time, but for now your best bet is to find another option against the Tampa Bay Bucs and Minnesota Vikings of the world. See answer above
Against poor run defenses, Norwood gets more run. He’s a weapon in the passing game every week, but the fact that he’s mainly useful as a homerun-or-nothing back makes him frustrating for fantasy purposes. I’d definitely own him, but unless you’re using him as a flex option he shouldn’t be starting right now.

I believe
Despite the yardage-heavy evidence to the contrary, the Falcons are improving against both the pass and the run. With their current personnel, I expect they’ll stay in the 9-15th range in points allowed and get no higher than 15-20th in yardage allowed. The team doesn’t mind yardage allowed as long as they can keep y’all out of the end zone.

Do you think you can beat out the bucs for 2nd place?
of course after losing this week ;)
by RiG on Nov 11, 2008 8:11 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
If we lose this week
Fairly doubtful. I still think the Bucs are playing well over their heads with their defense and a pretty mediocre offense leading the way. I’d give us a 50/50 shot, but then again, I’m not much for predictions.

More consistent running
We run more often and we churn out constant yardage. It’s hard to understate just how reliable the passing game has been since about the 4th week of the seasons, but I’d still go with Turner, Norwood and Snelling.

If it was 3rd and 4 , how often would the falcons run?
by RiG on Nov 11, 2008 8:07 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
If we're within field goal range
Better than half the time. If we’re further away, the Falcons are pretty fearless and will often try a strike down the field. They trust Matt Ryan’s arm.
by Dave the Falconer on Nov 11, 2008 9:01 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
In fact...
I believe the Falcons are rated second in the League in running the ball (yards).

Indeed
They’re definitely better on the ground. They put up a surprisingly consistent number of yards through the air, however.

I mean, cmon, red and black?? Bad Azz!

Wicked awesome
Those are my two favorite colors, as well. It gave me an excuse as a humble young New Englander to wear those colors in a sea of Patriots blue and silver.

Who deserves to go to the pro bowl from the falcons this season ?
by broncosfaninphilly on Nov 11, 2008 6:58 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
That'd be
Possibly Matt Ryan, if he keeps going on his current pace. A guy with over 3,000 yards, 22 TDs and 10 INTs for one of the better teams in the NFC deserves a spot.
Michael Turner has to go, as does Roddy White. Those guys have been monstrous for us. On the defensive side of things, young linebacker Curtis Lofton deserves consideration alongside safety Erik Coleman.
Of course, John Abraham will probably go, given that he has more than 10 sacks. Dude’s a beast.

Who do you think deserves to go to the probowl from the broncos ?
by RiG on Nov 11, 2008 7:02 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
Jay--if he stops the 'ints'
Clady, Royal, Harris, and Marshall.
The best defense is a good defense!
And last week's young players. Yes!
by Mike Clark on Nov 11, 2008 7:04 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I'd go with
Cutler, one way or the other. Eddie Royal is an obvious choice. Ryan Clady is a beast and must go. Marshall has better numbers than Royal and probably should go, but I’m a fierce Royal supporter.
by Dave the Falconer on Nov 11, 2008 8:00 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
We absolutely love Royal.
Not only is he a superb route runner with excellent hands, he is also a team leader and a positive influence off the field. He’s intelligent, witty, and has the savvy of an 11 year vet. To be honest, I think we have Rod Smith, Part 2. The only difference is that Rod was undrafted and had to work his way from the practice squad, and Eddie was a second round pick who was in the starting lineup for his first career game.
Do the Falcons have any young guys like that?

Matt Ryan
He’s the obvious choice for his poise, quiet leadership and obvious talent on the field. I think Curtis Lofton is also a quiet locker room guy who will eventually emerge as a leader. The kid looks to be a great linebacker and a budding Pro Bowler.

What would you say the strenghts and weaknesses of the broncos are?
by RiG on Nov 11, 2008 8:15 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
I'd say
Their strengths are their passing game and it seems to me special teams is high-quality, as well. Until all your injuries at running back, I would’ve just said offense in general.
I’d definitely chalk your defense up as a weak point.

Rowdy Roddy White
I have been a big fan of Roddy White these last two years. He is starting to truly emerge as one of the best WRs in the game. He looks to be on his way to have a better 2008 than 2007. How excited are Falcons fans to have a White-Ryan connection for years to come? Make people stop wishing for Terrence Mathis to come back( ha I’m not sure if they were, but he was good)?
"People ask me, 'What did you think about the draft picks?' I said, 'Dude, I don't watch.' I'm still kind of bitter," Smith said. "Some guys got drafted and they ain't played football in 15 years and I'm still waiting to get drafted. I'm still waiting to hear my name." -Rod Smith
by The Heat on Nov 11, 2008 10:55 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
We're very excited
And they must keep him around for the long term. I never knew the kid was going to be this good, but he’s producing like crazy and even blocks extremely well for a wide receiver. I’ll never stop wishing for Terence Mathis, but this is a good start!

Sorry if somebody already asked this question, but...
How important is this game to Atlanta? Is this a must win for the Falcons?
GO BRONCOS!!!

If they want a playoff berth
More or less every game is a must-win. Against a team without a stellar defense, I’d say that need becomes a little more urgent.

Off topic question...
How ’bout them Hawks? Are you a basketball fan too? What are the expectations surrounding that team this year?
GO BRONCOS!!!
by UnarmingMermaid on Nov 12, 2008 9:53 AM MST reply actions 0 recs
You won't believe this
I’m actually a Boston Celtics fan. Weird childhood, I guess.
Still, I can tell you that the Hawks are and should be reasonably expected to grab the 7th or 8th spot in the East this year. They’ve got considerable talent and play a very aggressive brand of basketball, which I enjoy watching.

Slightly back on topic
Can you tell me about the hostility of Falcon fans (or lack thereof hopefully).
How can my friends and I expect to be treated at the Georgia Dome adorned in our Broncos gear this Sunday.

We're not unreasonable
If you rile us up, you might be in trouble, but simply showing up in a Broncos jersey shouldn’t cause you any problems. Unless we’re drunk. Then we get mean.
