Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Casey Wiegmann

Perhaps the most pivotal matchup in Sunday's game against the Jets was how our backup center Casey Wiegmann, in his 13th season, would match up against someone who firstfan described as, "one of the best Nose Tackles in the entire NFL."  How would a 6'2 and 285 lbs Wiegmann match up against a 6’4” and 349 lbs Kris Jenkins?  The outcome of the game depended on it.

The answer? (drum roll please)

As Broncoman reported in his "No Respect (and I like it that way)" post,

"Stat line for Jenkins: 0 tackles 3 assists".

Or as Clark Judge from CBS Sports explained,

"...veteran center Casey Wiegmann, who in Sunday's 34-17 rout of the New York Jets did what nobody believed he -- or almost anyone, for that matter -- could, which was to handle Kris Jenkins...Wiegmann was nothing short of remarkable."  (thank you spock for the link to that article).

WOW!!!  And it's not like the Broncos necessarily went out of their way to avoid Jenkins.  Now I'll admit that there were times in the game where, as John B from Gang Green Nation described,  "Jenkins and Sione Pouha threw Wiegmann around like a rag doll."  In the end Jenkins reportedly complemented Wiegmann on his heart and tenacity.  That sounds like admitting defeat to me. ;-)

Which got me thinking (scary I know)...who has been more essential to the Broncos success this year?  Okay, I'll give you Cutler and maybe a few other offensive players.  But would the Broncos really have had any chance this year if it wasn't for Wiegmann and the amazing job that he has done coming into a new system and backing up Tom Nalen, one of the best all-time centers in the game?  Simply put...I don't think so!

Now the youngin's on the O-line have gotten all the attention this year, and they certainly deserve it. However, it's time for Broncos fans everywhere to give a HUGE pat on the back to Casey Wiegmann, not just for this game but for his contribution all season.

As Shanahan himself said about signing Wiegmann, "It was the smartest thing we've ever done."

oooops...

I didn’t see firstfan’s “Game Balls” post before I posted this. Sorry firstfan.

Still I think it’s good that Wiegmann gets some individual credit for his performance all season.

I took out the ‘game ball’ stuff to try to reduce the overlap with your own excellent “firtfan’s Game Balls” post.

Where would we be without him?

In an alternate universe Casey gets cut by the Chiefs. The Broncos think seriously about signing him but decide that Center isn’t exactly a position of need this offseason – they already have a veteran center and picked up a rookie Center in the draft.

Now when Nalen can’t make it to the regular season and is put on IR, who is the starting Center for the Broncos, who is going to make the calls and lead this talented but young an inexperienced line for the whole season?

Makes you wonder what might have been, doesn’t it?

A lot depends on the Chirs Myers trade

I looked quickly and Myers was traded to Houston on 3/17 and Denver signed Wiegmann on 3/20. I am guessing those two transactions are related and that Denver would not have made the trade if they were not about to sign Wiegmann. I don’t think the play would have suffered significantly if Hamilton slid back to center and Myers went over to LG, but I am not complaining about the way things turned out :)

by MattR on Dec 1, 2008 4:55 PM MST up reply actions

yeah...that Myers trade is still a bit of a mystery to me.

…but I’m satisfied with the way things have turned out as well.

It’ll be curious to see if KLich is the C of the future.

I read on a CBS site (via horsetracks)

That Casey’s wife won Survivor. So I looked her up. MY GOD SHE IS HOT!

So Casey is playing lights-out football for a team that looks like it should make the playoffs (and getting paid plenty of $ in the process), and his gorgeous model wife just won survivor.

If you are Casey Wiegmann, life is goooooddddd……

I wouldn't blame the guy if he just retired and went home right now!

As a fan, I’d hate it. As a male, I’d completely understand.

New bikini thread idea???

Will the WAGS of the players bring the Broncos luck??

If Mike Shanahan were a hotdog, would you eat him? I know I would. Hell, I'd eat him twice.

Wiegmann and Jenkins

Some things I thought about watching the game:

1) While Jenkins didn’t do much in the way of tackles, he did his job forcing Denver to double team him. In the end, neither the DEs or LBs of NY were able to take advantage.

2) Wiegmann did a terrific job. Yes, he was getting thrown around, but he was forcing Jenkins to engage “just” an offensive center, instead of a RB or QB. Hats off to Wiegmann!

3) Wiegmann was much, much faster than I thought. I saw him on several plays getting to the edge of the field to block before the RB was there, and even blocking on the edge of the field for receivers on pass plays! The commentators pointed it out one of the times, I think.

by Steve Nichols on Dec 2, 2008 4:36 PM MST reply actions

BTW,

the significance of Wiegmann blocking on the ede of the field on a passing play is this:

First, Wiegmann is protecting the QB. It isn’t until the ball is thrown that he can try to get down field and to the edge before the WR cuts upfield. You don’t see that from many offensive linemen, and never from a center!

HT (et. al),

From what you’ve seen from KLich, which is admittedly pretty limited, are you feeling comfortable with him as our future center…or do you think that we need to keep looking?

GO BRONCOS!!!

by UnarmingMermaid on Dec 3, 2008 3:49 PM MST up reply actions

I know that I am comfy with it

but the caveat is I need to see more of Klich himself. He enjoys contact, but outside of his goalline plays, We only have his preseason reps to go on. Based on those, however, i think we have a keeper. He moves well, he is a mauler, again he loves contact, and his college career tells me he is smart enough to be our center.

But I do think we need to bring in another interior lineman from the draft this year, or a free agent if Weigmann decides to be done and Nalen can’t return. Depth on the line is still an issue, and a guard OR center would be welcome from the draft. The guys we target can usually play both, anyways…

Hard to tell.

Most offensive linemen will take a few years to season, especially in a zone block scheme. Clady is a rare, special exception. Then again, he was a high pick.

I like what I see so far. I like his agility (footwork) and his motor (intensity and focus). I also like how sharp he seems to be. My guess is that he will work out great.

I feel ashamed for questioning his intelligence in the preseason based on his wonderlic score.

God, could you imagine if we drafted Chris Williams instead? I shudder to think.

I think we would have been okay with Hamilton as center.

But I definitely think the set up we have now is the best scenario.

Wiegmann and Hamilton are both killing it at their current positions.

Kuper gets overlooked a lot.

In the broadcast they showed the stats of the linemen, and I was surprised to see that Kuper is pretty high up there. I think he has given up less sacks than Hamilton.

by Steve Nichols on Dec 4, 2008 4:07 AM MST up reply actions

I was surprised by that, too

Kuper has given up 1.0, I believe, and Hamilton is the “weak link” with 2.5. That’s relative, of course, and might be the best for some lines.

In another thread...

…someone has written that Kuper is actually at zero sacks. One or zero, that’s awfully good!

He has zero sacks and 2 penalties

and he has only one sack in 29 starts, and only five penalties.

Just saw a mock draft

It had us taking Mack in the 1st. Didn’t make any sense to me, until later. Started thinking about Steiger at guard, Mack at center and our R2 bookends.

I want a basically defensive draft, but still….
