Well....I have never been ashamed of our team until today!
Hi Guys,
I will keep this short and sweet.
I am ashamed our our guys, bar 2 players: Josh Barrett and PJ Pope. They played with heart and never gave in.
The defense did try, but over pursued. Run D was decent, pass D was pathetic.
List of those that played with no heart:
- Jay Cutler: Body language and lack of looking off check downs is killing me with this kid. He had the RB open as an outlet countless times and would still thread it in to 2 and 3 coevreage. Pathetic. Its a lack of coaching and a guy that trusts his arm too much.
- Bob SLowik and Jeremy Bates: I dont WANT to hear any more about these guys. To have Josh Barrett playing that far off the line of scrimmage, to ALWAYS have a safety in the box, and to not alter the game plan at half time is insane. Same with Bates. No run game. No change in game plan at half time, and no creativity. The relationship between him and Cutler is not healthy. Cutler needs a guiding force, not a guy he can yell out. Its a case of the inmates running the asylum. The RB was open lots in this game, and was not used except for PJ's TD. BAD game planning by both these guys!
- Mike Shanahan: He gave up on his team. To not call time outs when we are down shows a lack of heart and belief in his team, and an attitude of giving up. His example today was BAD! We were still in this game in the 3rd quarter, and the play calling was bad.
The Chargers stepped up, and we gave our moct pathetic, listless and HEARTLESS effort of the year.
I am SO disappointed. I can handle us losing, but I cant handle us giving up. WHAT I DEFINITELY CANT HANDLE IS THE COACHING STAFF MAILING ONE IN AND GIVING UP!!!!! ABSOLUTLELY NOT ACCEPTABLE.
We are in real danger of missing the play offs in this mind set.
Thoughts?

A bit of an over reaction...
Ok to be disappointed, but I’ve been a fan for only 2 years, and i can come up with at least 5 games that was worse… heck, 10!

"I have never been ashamed of our team until today"...haha.
Then you obviously haven’t been watching the Broncos that long.
I seem to remember some pretty humiliating SB losses in the 80’s.
We’ll bounce back with a win over TB and a new outlook for the playoffs.

True, we have to win next week......period.
I know a SD loss before our game would clinch the division, yet there is no way we should lose the the Bills.

I not ashamed at all
They were beaten by a better team. There is no shame in that at all. It happens. If anything I was more ashamed at some of the players the Broncos had in the past like Clarence Kay and that ilk. This is a young football team. They are gonna be inconsistent. Thats a given. I am glad this team is in a position to host a playoff game. This team will only get better in the future

"They were beaten by a better team"
I disagree.
Part of the reason this loss is so frustrating is because it feels like we were outcoached by a lesser coach.
I know the players made some bad plays and didn’t necessarily help the cause at every opportunity.
I think we have as much or more talent on our team.
But I feel some of the defensive AND offensive playcalling was suspect.

Carolina
is a better team. Look they controlled the game after the score was tied at 10.
Nobody can convince me otherwise. However, I do think Denver can be as good as them. Injuries is a factor. I believe if Denver has a threat at running back the game plays out different. Once Carolina knew that Denver could not and would not run they played a sound defensive game. Again there is no shame it that

Carolina is a good team....
No doubt. I said this all this week.
I dont even care about the loss.
I care about the manner in which we lost.
Just heard Tont SHefflers interview in which he admitted they did not come ready to play and were flat.
I wont jump ship, but anyone who thinks this was just a matter of getting beaten by a better team did not watch the game.
I think we were let down by factors even before the game.
Having Pinnock and Boyd in active and coming in with 3 change of pace backs was not a good idea.
Is the sky falling? No. But we have a young team as has been pointed out and now we have a pressure cooker of a situation to deal with.
A close loss would have been a boost for this team as Carolina is good, but this was a game mailed in by coaches and players a like.
My opinion, but thats what I saw.
Thanks for the poste everyone!

I agree...
What is really frustrating is that our team just didn’t show up today. From the coaches to the players. I’m sure Carolina fans will think they beat us…but they didn’t play the same team that the Broncos are capable of being.
Why do they just take a Sunday off sometimes?

Because they are YOUNG!!
They haven’t been around to develop the tenacity of the grizzled vets. I’ve said that this team probably had another stinker in them before it was all said and done this year, and here it is! This loss means nothing in terms of playoff seeding, tiebreakers, anything like that. We will still make the playoffs. We will definitely have a home playoff game. We might lose that game. But you know what? We’re going to get there. No freakin way we lose to Buffalo next week. No freakin way. Not at home with a playoff spot to clinch.
And we are doing this with no run game, terrible defensive playcaling (put me on the Fire Slowik bandwagon— WTF was he thinking today!?!?) inconsistent kicking (and everything else) and the entire national media against us.
Don’t jump ship because of this loss. That would be stupid. Once our guys get playoff experience and develop that veteran moxie, we will go places. It’s 1995 again. That team was inconsistent. But it was the calm before the storm.
We WILL go places with this team and with these players. Just not this year. We were never going to win the Super Bowl this year. Most of us predicted 10-6. We’re right on track for that. Keep it up and get into the playoffs. That’s what it’s all about.

That is not cool in any sport…ever.
As I said, I will be cheering loudly (like I do every week) but I will aslo call out a BS effort when I see it….and we saw it today!

I live in NC, and it’s people like you (or at least people with an attitude similar to yours) that sometimes make me wish I didn’t. Well that and the tarheels, but thats a whole other issue. Just try to remember that, while you are not in any way associated with the team you follow, people still judge all fans of that team by your behavior. the 2007 Broncos warranted being ashamed
the loss to the niners in the superbowl was shameful, in its own way. This loss and this team in no way illicits a feeling of shame from me. We all knew that Carolina was a good team. We all knew that 4-0 against the NFC south was going to be exceptionally difficult, and perhaps the toughest task all year. And we knew how good Steve Smith was/is. And if we didn’t know any of those things before, well we know them now.
The flip side of this is that we knew what our running game was going to be. MHR is one of the few places in the world where you won’t hear that “anyone can be plugged in” to our running game, because we know that the front office and assistant coaches just make it look that way. We may have talked ourselves into believing that Boyd, Pope, Tatum etc. could get it done, but deep down we all know that it will be a miracle if the running game can bring balance at this point. Its ok to believe in miracles. It is not ok to RELY on them. We also know what kind of QB we have in Jay, and believe it or not, you don’t want this to change. For Jay to check down to a RB is for him not to be Jay any longer. When he is going into his ninth year in the league, MAYBE he will become a conservative “game manager”, but only after his considerable talent starts to wane. Realize that 90% of the plays that he makes that everyone loves, are barely an iota difference from the plays that we groan about.
Would we all feel better if the game were closer? Damn straight. But we DID get off to a good start, against a Panthers team that got off to an AWESOME start. This was a game of key missed plays and blown opportunity, but it isn’t the end of the world or cause for shame. Do yourselves a favor and lay off the ESPN and MSM for a few days, all week if you think you need to, but also do yourselves a favor and try not to ignore the truths that this game exposes, such as our unbalanced offense and the fact that RB will be a problem going forward, that will truly need a heroic effort from somewhere, someone.
BUF at Mile High will be our next opportunity to accomplish the first goal we set out to get this season, win the division. And rest assured that the Broncos are on their heels, just like the Bills, so this game won’t be easy. Right now the Bills are the only thing that matters. Not the Panthers who have their own concerns in a tough situation within their own divison, not Steve Smith who has hsi own concerns with earning the right to see his name among the all time greats at his position, and not the classy Carolina fans, 99% of whom have been nothing but courteous and respectful, and who have made this one of the better cross blogging weeks we have had the opportunity to engage in so far this year.
The sooner you turn your attention to the Bills, the sooner you will get back to doing something productive.

Good post Styg...
I agree with many points, and I will be cheering as loud as i have for the past 9 years next Sunday.
I am a coach myself, and heres my biggest disappointment with this game.
I tell my kids to always finish what they started. If that means leading a race and winning it, then cool. If that means falling down, getting up and losing by miles, then so be it, but AT LEAST finish the race: finish what you started.
ALl I wanted is for our team to play hard, and for the coaches to coach hard, until games end. This did not happen, and these guys are better than that.
I am ashamed of their effort, and more, I am REALY ashamed of the coaches. This game was devoid of passion and heart.
NO WAY is this team 20 points worse than the Panthers.
I hope (and I think we will) bring it against the Bills. Bit this is not the kind of game that instills confidence in anyone.
Enjoy the week man, and look forward to your posts this week.

I have been reading your thoughts scattered around in two posts
and I know exactly where you are coming from now. At the begining of the “Quest”, one of my measuring sticks for this team was whether they would be a 60 minute football team. Correct me if I’m wrong, but this game may be the first this year where we just rolled over when the going got tough. I called my Dad, a bronco lifer, and he said it looked to him like the Broncos just wanted the game to be over, and to get out alive and without showing anymore of their “zero-runningback playbook” than they had to…
For what it is worth, the silverlining of one of the worst sins in pro football (lack of effort), will take Denver COMPLETELY off the radar (we were barely on before this game). I am with you in hoping that this wasn’t an indication of how the Broncos plan on closing out this season, and more just a confluence of missed plays, bad days, and a team in Carolina that wasn’t going to take no for an answer….

bet/beat
Just wanted to help you out with this english language thing. A bet is like when you are having unprotected sex with your sister. You are betting on the odds that she wont get pregnant and produce another mentally challenged child, like yourself. I think the word you are looking for is beat. Notice the ‘a’ between the ‘e’ and the ‘t’? A beating is like what your daddy gives you when you wet your bed, or put your shoes on the opposite foot. There is another variation of this word using two e’s, but that is a lesson for another day. I don’t want to confuse you.

I made this same comment at another post--and I really think it
That being said—getting a top-notch free safety on this team is of upmost importance. I did not like Woodyard at strong safety tonight—Barrett is a strong safety—we had no free safety on the field. I am one of those that would like to see us go after a top-notch corner—and move Bailey to free safety—won’t happen…but it should.
On the positive side we really did shut down their run. On the negative side we let another long run hurt.
Other negatives, Selvin’s fumble..should never have happened—because that play should never have been called.
Other negative—play calling. This should have been a ‘Classic’ West Coast offense game. This should have been, short pass, short pass, run, short pass, run, run ……….. and everything in front of us moving forward. We spent way too much time looking sideways, going sideways………instead of looking forward…going forward. Everything should have been quick—but it was not. Too many times Jay sat back in the pocket—for unreal time—looking for something deep. This should have been a fast-paced-plan. Short pass, short pass, run, short pass, run, run—and that never happened.
Let’s hope we beat the Bills next week—how many of you would like to see phyllis and his merry men make it into the play-offs at 8 and 8?

Say that again
LOL mike clark are you blnd are something. Despite that one long run carolina still had a good runnin day. Shuting down the run means keeping a team runnin game under a 100 yards for the whole game. Which didn’t happen. For a team to claim they shut down the opsing team run game means? 1 keep that team from braking a big long run for a touchdown which didn’t happen.2 also keeping that team under a100 yards in rushing the whole game. Which between stewert and willaims combined they was well over a 100 yards by the end of the game. So denver never came close to shuting down carolina runnin game the day. Yes denver slowed down carolina runnin game at times thats all. Hell denver counld,n’t even get close to jake all day. So mike you and the denver fans keep dreaming.

Panther, you bring up good points. We did stop your run, what we were missing is our pro-bowl corner, and a true free safety. We squashed your run actually
yet had no-one to answer for Steve Smith. The mistake, however wasn’t our defense, it was our offense looking for big plays when the 5 to 8 yard ‘West Coast’ style is what we do best. We DID stuff your run and will do it again if we meet. You better hope if you make the Super Bowl that it isn’t us you are facing.

The only people I every respect on this denver team has been John elway, Rod Smith, and TD. Those guys was good i’ll admit that. But denver will never have players like that again. Jay cutler is in his 9th year and he is getting old. The door for denver hopes at a super bowl run is closing real quick. And also Carolina superbowl chances are fading aswell well because jake is getting towards his retiring time. But carolina still be the broncos. GO CAROLINA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Butttttttttt?
I will admit Jay culter is a dam fine QB agaist weaker D’s but not carolina D.Also someone on your site said eddie royal and marshall is the best combo recievers in the league. Wrong try again. The cardnials recievers bolden and larry are better then them 2. But steve smith is better then all 4 of them any day of the week. Yes smith will have his off games like he did agaist the raiders D. But every great WR has his off games. even randy moss and TO has their off games. But I got to hand it to the broncos. They tried in a losing effert. But I loved harrassing you bronco fans and I know you will be happy to see me leave your site. But I will be back some day when you least expect it.

Running game sputtered...
because we had no active FB on the roster today. Larsen and Pinnock were both scratches…that, no doubt had a pretty significant impact. A few things that did bother me today were 3 of their 3rd down calls. To me they were just being too cute…especially on that third and one. For that play they could have at least put Graham in as a FB. Oh, well! Shift the focus to the Bills…GO BRONCOS!!!

Completly Seconded
Boydy – I agree with everything you have said so far in this post, with one minor exception. I would substitute disappointed for ashamed. So far this season we have had some rocky patches, but I understood that we were a young team, and that we would have some brain farts. That was enough to stay me even after the atrocious raiders game, but the way that they gave up in the second half was very disappointing.
Otherwise, I completely agree with your thoughts… Rec’d.

I will trash talk all I want wheather you are any other person like are not. dude get with the program. you either with the panthers all the way are your agaist them. when the NFC south is at hand for the taking and soon the top seed will be at hand also. Next week is going to be golden key for carolina way to home field through out the playoffs and also a bye week for some rest.Next week win will give the panther the nfc south title, playoff spot, hold field through the playoffs , and a bye week for some well deserved rest. So what dude you going to kiss giants ass next when they loss next week aswell. Theres no room for half bait fans in this league dude. Either your with us are agaist us true fans. LOL like I said broncos did a good job in a losing cause. Ain’t that good enough for them are they want more. So dude you want to run your mouth then I will shout it up for you. Haha, ass-kissing?
Just a quick glance at my profile would reveal that my NFL team is, in fact, the Broncos (hint: click on my name). Nowhere does it say anything about the Panthers. I have no beef with them, but I’m a Denver native and a die-hard Bronco’s fan, I just currently live in NC. Don’t worry, though, I’ll be leaving your beloved state as soon as I graduate. The beaches are nice, but the rest of NC isn’t that great. The weather sucks, and unfortunately a disproportionate percentage of the people, such as yourself, are idiots.
PS: Learn how to spell (some paragraph breaks would be nice as well). I feel sorry for my father, who grew up in NC, that his home state is stereotyped as being a bunch of dumb rednecks. It’s easy to see why, though, when the most vocal examples of North Carolinians are as ignorant and belligerent as yourself. Go crawl back into whatever hole you call home.

Yeah, I let him get under my skin...
Even though I am a native Coloradan, I would consider myself atleast an honorary North Carolinian as I’ve lived in Raleigh for a slim majority of my life and I am currently going to college in NC. It just frustrates me that people stereotype North Carolinians as rednecks – and its people like him that are the cause of it.
Trust me, there are a lot of great people in NC, and a lot of very smart and successful ones as well (Charlotte is the 2nd largest banking city in the US, plus the RDU area has 2 of the largest research universities in the nation). It’s just a shame that morons like Pantherman give everyone a bad name.

Look, this isn't a big deal
Is this loss worst than the Raiders, Chiefs, Miami, New England, or Jags? Not really, of all the losses, this one was to a very good team, Miami and New England are good teams but aren’t going to do anything this year, KC and Oakland were way worse in my mind. We need to give Carolina credit, they are a very good team, and that was in their house where they play very well. We obviously are young, and I had posted if we were able to beat Carolina then I thought we would have a shot at the Super Bowl, we didn’t, but we will still mae the playoffs and win the west. What this shows is we still need some more talent in the D-line and safety postions, and a good RB would be great. We still will be 10-6, which is probably about right for this team, but our window is just opening, San Diego’s is shutting fast. So take heart, season didn’tend, and this team will rebound, I expect a close game against Buffalo, but we should prevail, and then stomp San Diego out since they will have nothing to play for. Then lets see what we can do in the playoffs, maybe we win, maybe we don’t, still looks like this season will be a step forward.
Do we need some changes, yes, but lets wait till the end of the season before we make a true assessment of where the team needs to go to go forward. Have faith, the ride isn’t over and there will be some more thrills.

My problem with the way we played
is that it seemed that even though we all knew that the Panthers were a better team and would probably win, the Broncos players seemed to get that vibe and decided it wasn’t worth the effort to play for the full 60 minutes.
I agree that Carolina deserves the credit for fielding a superior team, but after the first quarter (when we were still in it and playing competitively) we just seemed to lose all of our fight and just kind of went through the motions so that they game would end. I believe that is what boydy is saying when he says that he was disappointed and I have to agree with him. Even if we lost by the same score but we saw some emotion out of the offense (specifically) and a little bit of hustle to the line of scrimmage (as pointed out by the announcers there was no lack of urgency) when the game was still within reach.
I guess this all goes along with a young team. After all, I was one of those that said that we would go 10-6 this year and if we can pull our heads out, that is still attainable (though I don’t like our chances in the playoffs, especially in the second round).

Dude you are just a pissed off fan. Your team got owned by one of the best teams in the nfl right now. My spelling might be off some what. But your denver mcnuggets was way off today. Dude your just mad so get over it. To the betting from me like your broncos did from the panthers. I am glad to a carolina man and proud of itIf the broncos should make it the play offs which the way it looks it might not happen. If chargers when this comin week agaist the bucs and broncos loss to a very good ravens team. Then denver losses to chargers in the last game of the season then the denver is staying home for the new year and the rest of next year. LOL But if by some way of them making it to the playoffs then denver wouldn’t make it very far in the playoffs anyway. I could care less bout the broncos. They suck all together. You say carolina all full idiots. IF that was the case then carolina wouldn’t have some the best schools in the US are produce some of the best althetes in sports history, Like micheal jordon, torry holt, phillp rivers, dry bly, and so on. No its just we carolina people love to speak our minds and take no bullshit from any other person are people like you. Plain and simple carolina is one of the best states in the US. And hell they even go a song abot carolina. It goes nothing finer then been in carolina. Dude you have been living up in mile high for so long you brain has lost a lot of oxegyen over the years, And yea my spelling might not be be good all the time but I don’t give a fuck. Dude I got a master degree in computers from ECU years ago and make 100,000$ a year. When you make that kind of money then let me know son. But your still a crying little bitch of a bronco fan who lost. So get over it leave my dam state you little hoe and never come back.

Good for you...
Gimme your contact info so I can send you a pay stub in about 5 years. I definitely support the schooling portion, why else do you think i’m still here? In-state tuition to one of the best engineering schools in the country (at least in my field) is not a bad deal. I apologize for omitting that earlier.
Also, full of idiots is not what I said. If you had any reading comprehension you would know that what I said was that there seems to be a larger percentage of idiots here than elsewhere. Also, your argument against that really doesn’t hold any weight since athletic ability doesn’t necessarily require brains.
And don’t worry… I won’t hold this against you anymore, the fact that the Wolfpack had the pleasure of ruining the poor little EZU pirates season is enough to assuage my conscience. By the way, I can’t imagine that you are that great a computer guy if you can’t spell. All the programming that I have done requires very precise syntax and spelling…
PS: They’ve written songs about Colorado as well… Imagine that… (“Rocky Mountain High” anyone?)

A degree and 100,000$ a year?
If that is the case, I am guessing that a ECU degree is like toilet paper. But I seriously doubt either of your statements are true. My guess is that you really hail from South Carolina and are really have nothing to be happy with in your own life, and lets face it, South Carolina is the same as West Virgina minus the overt inbredding. I considered relocating to Concord a few years back and I met tons of great people from North Carolina, and outside of the humidity, I probably would of moved there. So I don’t want to bash NC or the people that live there because they seemed very nice to me. But you need to realize that winning a game against the Broncos isn’t the Super Bowl, does Carolina have a very good team, yes, did you get the better of a young and battered team this week, yes, congrats, you won a game you were supposed to win. But save the hurrahs when you actually accomplish something.

Honestly,
I prefer Pantherman’s straight shit-talking and totally incoherent style to Southtunnel’s gloating under the guise of “here I was trying to say that I respect the Broncos have injuries”. That’s BS…he’s here to gloat. If you’re going to be a shit talker…don’t do it under a “whoah is me…I’m trying to be the ‘good guy’” facade. He’s not even man enough to straight shit talk. Week to Week
This season is so week to week. One week you feel high, the next low. You don’t know what will happen every week with the Broncos. But, I do expect a win against Buffalo, and I also think that the Bucs will beat the Chargers. They didn’t look that good today, but KC handed them the game. Thank goodness the Bucs have something to play for and control their own destiny.

Take it easy denver faithful it's not his fault...
I currently live in NC, a friend of ours was a teacher here for a year before she couldn’t take it anymore. They have a really poor public education system here in NC. Pantherman stop eating the crayons or there won’t be any left for anyone else.
I had a bad feeling when I saw Champ at the top of the tunnel in his jacket while the Defense was doing their pre-warmup huddle. I think one of two players could have changed the out come of this game. Champ or Hillis, either one. If we had both, we would have crushed.
I already said this on another post but, I was at the game and I saw no sense of urgency on the sidelines.

Its one thing
for a clown like pantherwhatever her name is to come in here and gloat after a home win. Thats ok, just realize what comes around goes around. Next week when the Panthers lose at NY, and then lose in the playoffs it will be all good. I love the fact he has stirred up the pot. But I dont us faithfull fans here at MHR to sink down to his level. Let the crap stay in the sewer, its not worth the aggravation. I admire all the smack from a “fan” on a team who rarely can sell out their own games and once in a blue moon when they are good goes to other sites to try and show the lack of intelligence. I understand what your saying.
But don’t hate the other team because of some douche. I myself like the panthers. I went for them against TB, and I’ll root for them against the Giants, but thats because I always root against the giants, probably because MSM has already crowned the Giants the best football team in the NFL, (or maybe because my sister-in-law is a giants fan).
But anyways to get back on track, Even in spite of the idiot, I wouldn’t be opposed to the panthers going all the way this year. I mean it’s pretty obvious our Broncs aren’t gonna make it that far, which is OK.
I mean, if someone told you at the beginning of the year that for a period of 4 games, that all 3 linebackers would be injured and there backups in, and no running back on the roster will be healthy enough for more than 2 games, which 5 of them would be placed on IR, and the broncos will make the playoffs and win there division…
Well you would of told me to share….

Ok ok.... calm down.
Ease up on the redneck, sleeping with your sister, uneducated north carolinian comments. To be completely honest NC’s public school system ranks around 23rd in the country (higher than colorodo’s). I believe we can all agree pantherman is an idiot. No need to result to aimless name calling. I imagine any state abundant with rural inhabitants, is going to have a few moron’s. I don’t think you’ll find too many ppl at CSR making such comments. I believe showing restraint and a tougher resolve shows higher intelligence than jumping in the mud with such ppl.
That being said, it was a very tight game in the first half. Denver was moving the ball a lot faster than the panthers wanted, and had it been in Denver it definitely could of been a different game. However, 7-0 at home builds a lot of confidence for a home team.

Pantherman
If his team won, he has the right to brag. Most fans just do it with much more class. In the grand scheme of things the Panthers are not that signifciant of a team overall as far as whether (sorry Pantherman, weather) or not we become consistent winners. I am completely indifferent toward them.
As far as my team, the Broncos are an enigma. I can’t figure them out. One week they can beat anyone, and the next week lose to anyone. The Panthers are a good team (most likely better team than us at this point) but it did seem as if the team gave up toward the end. I thought they should have at least tried to score at the end for pride if nothing else.
Hopefully, the inconsistency and perceived lack of effort is just the result of youth. This team has much potential. I’m gonna choose to hang in there with them, as frustrating as that may be.

Just because I was disappointed yesterday
doesn’t mean that I’ve given up on them. I can see them beating Bills then finishing the sweep in SD to finish the season and possibly when their first playoff game (though I’m not so confident after that).
I’ve been a fan too long to let things like the Carolina game cause me to give up hope (the closest I have come was when Wade’s team went 8-8). They are right on track with where I thought they would be this year and I see great things for them in the coming years when they get their RBs back and a good defensive draft in ’09.
