Bills/Broncos Q&A with Buffalo Rumblings

Hello, fine folks of MHR (my favorite non-Bills blog on SB Nation):

Brian Galliford of Buffalo Rumblings here.  Guru seems pretty anxious to move on from your loss to the Panthers yesterday, so I'll make a valiant attempt to move on from Buffalo's seventh loss in eight tries - one of the most embarrassing losses in recent memory.

Yep.  Not working.  But I'll answer your questions anyways. :)

Anything and everything is open for discussion, folks, but I'd like to politely put in a request for as many Marshawn Lynch questions as possible.  He's my one remaining link to sanity, as he's the only Buffalo Bills player that I truly enjoy watching at this point in the season.  Marshawn Lynch rules; clearly, his teammates don't.

Best of luck this weekend - but trust me, you won't need it.  If your Broncos have a problem, the Bills are the cure.  Believe it.

Talk abou the play of WR Lee Evans. What is most Bills' fans opinion of him?

He got off the a pretty good start but in the last 6 or 8 weeks, seems very inconsistent in being featured in the offense. Some games he has huge numbers (not a ton of catches but big y/catch) and then other games, he disappears. What is the cause of that?

Early in the season, Buffalo couldn’t run the ball to save their lives. We had a new offense, new line coach, and new blocking schemes, and we couldn’t run to save our lives. So we passed a lot, and that’s how we won games early. Hence, Lee was productive.

Tony Sparano ended all of that by employing 8-man coverage schemes when we went to Miami, and every team has employed some version of that scheme since. Our running game has gotten exponentially better – Marshawn’s got 490 yards over the past 5 games and is averaging over 5 yards a pop – but now we can’t throw it. Trent Edwards has struggled and J.P. Losman is, well, J.P. Losman. So Lee’s dealing with double coverage and mediocre QB play. Different year, same issue.

By the way, it’s hard for me to admit this, but the Ralphie Report buffalo is badass. I like our red Rumbling buffalo, but still… nice blog logo. :)

Always liked the bills.

The were my second favorite team growing up (grade school days) behind the broncos.

What do you think is the Bills biggest issue? Unfortunately(no disrespect intended) but they have bleak since the days of yore… (80s)

by Chuck "DeadDrunk" Breedlove on Dec 15, 2008 12:32 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

I’m 23 years old, and the Bills have missed the playoffs 9 years in a row. That’s way too close to half a lifetime for me.

It’s a gross oversimplification, but QB play is our biggest problem. It’s just not anywhere near consistent enough to have a winning football team. Trent Edwards started off hotter than most QBs in the league, but once defenses adjusted, he couldn’t counter. He’s been up and down, and now he’s hurt. J.P. Losman… ugh.

QB next week?

Will Edwards be back? I hear what you’re saying about him, but three INT’s and a fumble by Losman means you’d be better off with Edwards. IMO.

When the Gods are angry with someone, they give him what he asks for.

You’re not getting any arguments from any Bills fan in regards to your opinion on Edwards. Clearly, he’s vastly superior to Losman.

The Bills don’t practice until Wednesday; if Trent practices in any capacity on Wednesday, he’ll likely play in Denver. But I’m not counting my chickens.

Welcome Brian Galliford!!!

Any chance we could reach some kind of gentleman’s agreement and the Bills could throw this game for us? Everyone else around here wants us to ‘earn’ a playoff spot….but I’ll take it any cheap ass way we can get it (that was an attempt at humor but since my blood is still boiling from the Carolina loss I doubt it worked out too well). On a serious note, I imagine this season is a bit of a dissapointment for Bills fans, however, do you sense that the general feeling is that you have the right formula to build a successful team or is it back to the drawing board for the Bills?

GO BRONCOS!!!

by UnarmingMermaid on Dec 15, 2008 12:48 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

HAHA. No “gentleman’s agreement” is needed, because the Bills are perfectly proficient at throwing games themselves. No extracurricular activity needed.

What I believe and what 95% of Bills fans believe are starkly different opinions. I think the Bills have a solid young core of talent, and with a few well-placed additions could be ready to challenge for the playoffs in 2009. Most Bills fans will tell you that the team isn’t going anywhere with Dick Jauron as head coach, and Ralph Wilson – the team owner himself – said just last weekend that this Bills team “lacked talent”. So apparently, I’m just a homer. :)

They got off to such a hot start and then simmered...

What happened? Just a soft early schedule? Injuries? Inexperience?

GO BRONCOS!!!

by UnarmingMermaid on Dec 15, 2008 12:55 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Injuries are a poor excuse, but the schedule certainly had something to do with it. The teams we’ve beaten this year are a combined 21-61. That includes your archrival Chargers (you’re welcome, and you’re welcome in advance this weekend).

But I’d say inexperience is the biggest issue. We started 5-1, and since then, the players have admitted to getting a little lackadaisical and overconfident in their pre-game preparations. Suddenly, they’d lost four in a row and gone from first to worst in the division, and they’re reeling. It snowballed very quickly, and they’re too young to have the mental mettle to turn it around this late in the season.

These are smart players. They’ll learn. Unless, of course, Ralph Wilson decides to blow it all apart and start from scratch again…

I will say that I've always kind of liked the Bills...

I think of them as sort of our ‘sister’ team (not in a deragatory way).

Both are small market, cold weather cities. Both had numerous humiliating SB losses in the 80s under great QBs and average teams. Both are mostly ignored by the national media.

Just seems like the two have a lot in common.

Jauron...

…took the blame for the pass play at the end that was fumbled by Losman and run back for 7 for the Jets to win. And Jauron should have taken the blame, the way Lynch was running.

Yeah, Lynch has been a monster the past five weeks, rushing for 490 yards and averaging over 5 a pop. He had 21 carries for 127 yards today against Kris Jenkins’ Jets D; there’s no reason he shouldn’t have gotten the ball there. Dick was right to accept blame, because it was HE that called for the pass there, not coordinator Turk Schonert.

Your Broncos deserve props, though, for laying out the blueprint on how to effectively run on the Jets. Buffalo followed your lead yesterday (save for when it counted most), and it was easily our best rushing effort of the season.

Do the Bills blitz much?

Few teams have had much success pressuring Cuter this season; however, Carolina blitzed extensively and managed to get to him a couple of times. Is that a strategy that the Bills are likely to replicate?

GO BRONCOS!!!

by UnarmingMermaid on Dec 15, 2008 1:13 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Buffalo has been forced to blitz frequently because we can’t get anything close to a pass rush with our front four alone. So yeah, we should blitz, but we did it a lot less than normal against Favre yesterday, and it worked – he was TERRIBLE in the second half. I think we’ll cut our losses and drop 7-8 into coverage more often than not and let you guys try to beat us on the ground.

I know the Bills are having a rough time his year...

…but what kind of areas on the team do you feel you can build on going forward? What is the biggest weakness?

What kind of adjustments will the team make for next year?

"Greater is an army of sheep led by a lion, than an army of lions led by a sheep" Defoe

by Steve Nichols on Dec 15, 2008 1:21 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

I think that we can build on our young QB (Edwards), our offensive line (we just need a competent center), our two outstanding running backs, and our young talent in the secondary. There are good young players in Buffalo; there just aren’t enough of them. A degree of patience is required as well.

Center has been a problem area for two years now; Alex Mack looks like an enticing first-round option no matter when we end up picking. Our pass rush is abysmal; with a solid edge rusher or two, our defense instantly goes from being average to pretty good. So we’re praying that Aaron Maybin decides to leave Penn State this year, naturally. Those are the two areas; we’ll also need a replacement for Losman, some receiver depth, a pass-catching tight end, and depth at linebacker and the interior defensive line.

The biggest adjustment, however, might come at the head coaching position. If that happens, we can only guess what will happen this off-season…

I'm sorry to say that I've always hated the Bills

Although that hate has been muted over the years. It had nothing to do with the team, honest. :D

Growing up a Bronco fan in Toronto, I was habitually disappointed to know that the ‘national’ 4pm game (normally the Broncos) was pre empted by the local Buffalo affiliate so that they could crow about the Bills latest win. This was back when Jim Kelly led the team. It got to be that I started to hate the team, through no fault of their own. But nothing is logical when you love another football team. :D

Speaking of Toronto, I think it’s a bad precedent to play some games there. They should sell the team to the public, like in Green Bay. Except that the NFL outlawed that sort of thing in the 60’s. Do you think the team will have to move?

by CalgaryFan on Dec 15, 2008 2:13 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

No, honestly, I don’t think the team will have to move. The whole Toronto thing was overblown, in my opinion, and the games we’re playing there double our usual per-game revenue, whether those games sell out or not. That’s why it was done; anything else insinuated about the decision to play games up there was just the media trying to connect dots.

Money. Rogers Communications paid the Bills $78 million for eight games in five years; as the Bills generally gross a little over $5 million per home game, Wilson is literally doubling his money by exporting games.

Thanks for the blogging

Just my two cents: I have a great appreciation for the Bills…they took the crown from the Broncos for “The worst Afc superbowl record” in my mind back in the 90s…4 losses in a row. That made me feel a little better about our guys.

Now back to current time: I’m looking forward to a good game from both teams. I think our biggest focus on defense should be stopping Lynch…he’s a fantastic runner!

Offensively: Get a run game of some sort going so we can get our offensive groove back.

Are you happy that the head coach got a three year extension

And what do you think of Marv Levy as a GM, does he still have an eye for talent?

"Me fail english, that unpossible" - Ralph Wiggum

by Broncoman on Dec 15, 2008 2:58 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Marv Levy resigned as our GM just a few hours after the season finale in 2007. We currently have no GM; we have a COO (Russ Brandon, not a football guy) and VPs of Pro Personnel (John Guy) and College Scouting (Tom Modrak). In short, it’s the most convoluted and strange front office structure in the NFL.

Again, my opinion is starkly different from most Bills fans on Jauron. I think he’s a quality coach and am glad he’s got the extension, although I’m hearing it’s still 50-50 on whether or not he’ll be back next season. Most Bills fans vehemently disagree with me.

I think starting 5-1 and (possibly) finishing 6-10 might have something to do with that. If you owned a team whose coach finished 1-9 in his third season, wouldn’t you fire him? :)

Not if it is going to cost me a lot of money

I am not sure what the buy-out clause is, but I will always put the arguement up there before you fire a coach, who is better that you can get to replace him. The problem is that I don’t think Buffalo is that attractive to most coaches, so I wonder who they think they could get that is better that would come there.

Speaking of coaches

Bills former OC Steve Fairchild left for Colorado State a year ago. Good for the Bills? Bad for the Bills? In between?

To bear up under loss, to fight the bitterness of defeat and the weakness of grief, to be victor over anger, to smile when tears are close, to resist evil men and base instincts, to hate evil and to love love, to go on when it would seem good to die, to seek after the glory and the dream, to look up with unquenchable faith in something evermore about to be, that is what any man can do, and so be great.

I've got to say, Brian

(thanks for stopping by, BTW) that we have a real knack for losing to terrible teams. (SEE: Our efforts against the raiders and the chefs). But while I hope that your Bills are the panacea for my Broncos’ woes, I must be realistic in acknowledging that it could easily be the other way around. Hell, JP Losman could look like a pro bowler if the D did what they did last week, and which is stare at everything Marshawn Lynch does, doesn’t bother to cover WRs, and basically lets Losman throw to whoever he likes.

Now, as a Broncos fan, I will be hoping that this does not happen. But all I’m saying is, don’t be so certain that it won’t. ;)

Trent Edwards

Last year Trent Edwards seemed like one of the steals of the draft; plus there was all they hype about Bill Walsh’s comments about him.

This year he seems to be struggling. Now all quarterbacks go through there little slumps. However, I do not believe that there can be any kind of ‘quarterback-by-commitee’ for a team to be solid on offense. There needs to be an established quarterback that the offense can hang their hat on. That’s all in my opinion.

With that being said, is Trent Edwards the solution at quarterback or do the fans look at this as just a slump? There have been teams who have screwed around with quarterbacks recently and they are worse for it – CHI, KC, MIN, DET, (funny how the NFC North dominates that short list) and I wonder if Bill’s fans think they are on that list at all. This has more to do with emotion from poor play rather than common sense – I can’t think of any other teams that may be feeling that way right now.

by nickt84 on Dec 15, 2008 5:30 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

I look at it as a slump for Edwards. The kid was a third-round pick, and Walsh pedigree aside, he was making a BIG step from crappy old Stanford to the NFL. After 6 games this season, his QB rating was 98, and people were talking about a Pro Bowl bid. I don’t care who it was against, he’s got the goods. He just needs more experience. We’re not talking about a guy in the class of a Cutler here, but if he can achieve consistency, he has the tools to be just as efficient – yet more athletic – than, say, Chad Pennington. We can win with that type of QB.

Losman’s in because Edwards is hurt. Edwards is Dick Jauron’s guy, and that’ll be true if Dick is around for the 2009 season. If he’s not, well then it’s anyone’s guess.

Yes, we run a zone blocking scheme. Which makes no sense to me, considering the Bills have the biggest line in the league. But maybe that’s just me.

Our linebackers are pretty slow, especially considering the fact that we run a base Cover 2. It’s why opposing QBs are so proficient in the short passing game against us, and it’s why Jay Cutler’s going to explode on Sunday.

As I said earlier in the thread, playing in Canada was all about doubling our per-game income ($9.75 million as opposed to $5 million) as well as furthering our fan base. Site monitoring

The NFL monitors most football sites that get a lot of traffic and deal with the NFL. They take their brand very seriously. The Broncos have a good relationship with Guru, because MHR is the biggest fan driven outreach to fans not living in Colorado (incuding the international scene).

I don’t know of any players or staff posting. But word about what’s on MHR gets around with the players (you may recall a member of Torain’s family chiming in; a fact that was verified by Guru).

Crowell is terrible in coverage. He’s constantly out of position. He has, however, shown some flash as a blitzer, and he tends to be a pretty solid playmaker.

What kind of scheme?

We have no idea. We put eight in the box on every play and have our corners play 9 yards off. We start linebackers at safety. When we do have a traditional safety, we play him 20 yards off the ball and take him completely out of the play. We get no pressure from the front four, yet we rarely blitz. Sometimes we play 2 safeties like any sane coach would play 2 safeties, and we run a 4-3 alignment that seems to be pretty effective against both the run and the pass. Then the coaches realize we are doing well and they make an adjustment back to boneheadedness. Sometimes we even run a 3-4, despite not having a true nose. We have great jamming corners in Dre’ Bly, Josh Bell, and Jack (muthaf####n) Williams, and they are effective when we let them play bump and run, but 95% of the time, Bob Slowik has them play so far off the ball that they may as well be punt returners.

Would Crowell fit in that kind of defense?

Sure would. That’s the scheme the Bills run, except it’s a base Tampa 2. One of our readers likes to call it the “Tampon 2”.

I want to thank you guys over at Buffalo rumblings.

You’re honest and straight shooters. I hope both teams have good games. I would say let it be injury free but the last time I did that, before the game last year, well you know.

He was at Ralph Wilson Stadium earlier this year; he spoke to the fans at halftime of our win over the Raiders (again, you’re welcome – we’re 3-0 against the AFC West). He’s walking and rehabbing every day; he just got married; the only issues he continues to struggle with are weakness and balance. But even with those issues, he’s a pretty miraculous story.

But also, thanks for beating the raiders. That always makes my day a little brighter, lol. And no offense but I hope we stop your winning streak against the AFC West this Sunday.

Running Game

In an earlier response…. You talked about Lee Evans getting good stats because the running game was so slow to get going. A few questions about that. Do you think the running game improved because teams started to play different D against Lee? Or the line started to break open bigger holes for Lynch to run through? Or what exactly do you attribute the phenomenal output of your running game over the past few weeks?

I ask cause we need help in this area…. I know it was sort of answered… but any more info you could provide would be great.

It’s both D scheme of our opponents and better line play. Our crappy center, Duke Preston, borderline man-handled the Jets’ Kris Jenkins last week (though he had help). We’ve been running REALLY well lately. Our only issue is that we continue to put the ball in the hands of J.P. Losman. Put me in at QB and let me hand off to Marshawn and Fred Jackson 45 times, and we win.

I will back Brian for this weeks game.

Wait…. Maybe. How old are you 45? – I assume because you are a computer geek that you are over weight, you are a football fan so you drink too much….. Nahha, I think I still back Losman. I think it gives us a better chance of winning.

I’m 23, indeed a computer geek, and I wouldn’t consider myself “overweight”, but certainly “soft around the edges”. Oh, and a better NFL quarterback than J.P. Losman. So good choice.

Thank the football gods that JP is #3 now…

That’s a tough one. REALLY tough. I like Brandon Marshall a lot, if only because he’s the type of receiver the Bills have never had – tall and nasty. He and Lee Evans would be an incredible tandem. But QB is easily the most important position on the field, so I’m going with Cutler.

Where did J.P. Losman come from?

He just kind of came out of nowhere a couple of years ago and was labeled by the MSM as the Bills’ “QB of the future.” And I just heard a story from ESPN that said he came from goat farmers from the Andes Mountains and has webbed feet. Any truth to that?

In all seriousness, did you ever really expect him to be the “QB of the future?” And do you think Trent Edwards is that QB?

I was never completely sold on J.P., though I lobbied hard for him to get playing time, because I’ve seen this franchise run through enough young QBs too quickly. Alas, that wasn’t meant to be, thanks to Vince Wilfork’s elbow and Trent Edwards’ solid rookie season as J.P.’s replacement.

As for rumors about goats and webbed feet… well, the goats would explain his facial hair, and we’d always heard rumors that he was raised by ducks. That was just a rumor though; ESPN doesn’t touch those. Wait…

And yeah, I think Edwards has the goods to be a very solid, Chad Pennington-esque quarterback in this league. Again, not sold though. He needs to play, and Bills fans (and the Bills themselves) need to be patient with him. That said, I’d jump at the chance to land a guy like McNabb in the off-season.

Yes and no. Trent Edwards practiced today, and signs are great that he’ll make his first start this Sunday since hurting his groin in our loss to SF. If Edwards ends up not going, however, Gibran will start – relegating J.P. Losman to #3 status.

Gibran is a 27-year-old, five-year vet (I think) out of Indiana that has thrown two NFL passes. So if I’m you guys, I’m crossing my fingers that Edwards has a groinular setback this week.

What would be the point of starting Edwards this week?

Granted I know you want to win, but in all seriousness, with nothing but pride to play for, is there a reason to have Edwards play and possibly further damage himself?

The point in playing Edwards is that he unequivocally remains the QB of the future for this franchise, and he’s only got 21 starts under his belt. He needs experience wherever he can get it. That’s really the long and short of it.

Who were the worst draft picks of 2007 & 2008?

The future looks so bright that we're going to need blue and orange sunglasses!

by Arctic Bronco on Dec 18, 2008 2:51 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

If you’re talking about Buffalo’s worst draft picks, 2007 would be fourth-round RB Dwayne Wright and 2008 would be third-round DE Chris Ellis.

If you’re talking about general NFL draft picks, 2007 would be Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell and 2008 would be, to this point, Lions OT Gosder Cherilus.

But it’s too early to judge any draft picks from these two classes. Just my opinion.

General Question

Is it more frustrating having gone through the four Super Bowl losses, or seeing the team not being able to compete consistently year in and year out since the losses. Also with New England and the Jets in your division, do you feel Buffalo gets shafted by the msm because of those two teams.

"Me fail english, that unpossible" - Ralph Wiggum

The past decade of futility is definitely far more frustrating than four Super Bowl losses – to me, at least. I’m only 23, so I was 5, 6, 7 and 8 years old as the Bills were losing those Super Bowls. I remember being saddened by those losses, but wasn’t emotionally invested in the team at those tender ages as I am today. Now that I’m what you like to call a “real man”, I can say that when I was a kid, at least we were winning something.

Where do you rank Kelly among all time QBs?

And no, I’m not looking for a stroke job for Elway. I’m curious about how buffalo fans view the entirety of his career,a nd how he carried himself off the field….

Jim Kelly is nothing short of a cult hero in Buffalo. I thought he was always kind of a doofus, but he’s a lovable doofus. He was an outstanding quarterback – unflappable, tough, relentless. Obviously he was very prolific, and led some of the most explosive offenses in NFL history. You can’t go wrong when your QB ends up being a first-ballot Hall of Fame player.

I’d rank Kelly Top 10 all-time, but obviously, there are some quarterbacks – retired and current (and no, I’m not talking about Brett Favre) – that rank higher. Dan Marino doesn’t count.

Also,

what is the most important offseason move for the Bills? Solid first round pick? Get the front office looking a little more tradiitonal? Signing key players?

Another: How has Posluszny been faring? I really liked him coming out of the draft, but I lose track of most players who aren’t playing for Denver, or getting pimped by the MSM…

One More: What kind of draft priorities are the Bills going to have?

Concision in style, precision in thought, decision in life.

by Jeremy Bolander on Dec 19, 2008 6:35 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Three answers…

- In my noodle, their most important off-season move would be getting far bigger and more physical in the front seven. I want two 350+ defensive tackles on this team, and I want schematic flexibility in terms of having edge rushers that can put their hand in the dirt or rush from a standing position. In the team’s noodle, they’ll probably work on re-signing some key free agents (Jabari Greer is a big one) and then getting bigger in the trenches.

- Poz has been OK. He’s the team leader in tackles, but our defense is highly average, and he hasn’t made a lot of big plays (1 pick, 1 fumble recovery). He’s a good football player, but he’s not a guy you can build a defense around.

- Getting bigger in the front seven, once again, will be a draft priority. DTs B.J. Raji and Terrence Cody are already my two favorite prospects. DE (our pass rush is AWFUL) and C (our centers are AWFUL) will be priorities too, as well as depth at LB and perhaps, if we’re lucky, a starting free safety.

wow

sounds a lot like us. We need DT #1, DEs, SAM or MIKE LBs, a center (or guard, usually the guys we draft on interior oline can play both), and like you guys, it would be nice to pick up a FS, and we may even target a high value early round guy, though the debate is hot as to whether backing our safeties out of the box would make the talent we have there now look better. Bottom line is we have a ton of questions at safety, and the way to hedge against that is bring some talen in through the draft….

Would Buffalo consider signing Alex Haynesworth?

Concision in style, precision in thought, decision in life.

by Jeremy Bolander on Dec 20, 2008 10:11 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m sure Big Al would be a consideration of ours, but the chances are extremely remote. There’s just going to be too much competition for the guy, and the Bills rarely get into bidding wars. We prefer to build through the draft.

And BJ Raji is looking like a pretty polished prospect

when the rumor was going around that he was going to declare for the draft last year I thought Denver should target him…

En Garde!

by Jeremy Bolander on Dec 20, 2008 10:12 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I like Raji a lot, though I’m concerned about his football intelligence. He makes a lot of plays based on talent alone. I think I prefer Cody to this point (and obviously he has yet to declare), but either way, I think that if either of those two are available when the Bills pick, they have to be considerations alongside our big needs (C, DE).
