The Stuff of Legends

I already posted these idea in another thread, but my posting was near the end of the thread and I really wanted to say it one more time (with a few improvements).  I haven't included the name of the person who created the thread or those who responded or their comments because I didn't think I should without their permission, especially after having made a few changes.  Certainly, if they want to identify themselves and include their comments, they are, of course, more than welcome. But here goes.

The Magic Number Is Still One.

This bears repeating.

The magic number is still one.

We knew it was very possible, likely even, that the Chargers would win and the Broncos would lose this weekend. And that’s exactly what happened. There really shouldn’t be any talk of gloom and doom. Things will work out. This next weekend it is very possible, likely even, that the Broncos will beat the Bills AND the Chargers will lose to the Buccaneers.

So keep a steady keel. Keep the faith. The Broncos are a very young team, still learning how to win, but I think, no, I believe they are going to do it and this next weekend is when it will happen.

And even if it doesn’t, well, we still get to go head to head against the Chargers with everything on the line in their back yard. Now wouldn’t that be an exciting game to watch? These are not the Wade Phillips Broncos, the ones who went to Oakland with everything on the line and lost. These are the Mike Shanahan Broncos. And they will win. Mark my words.

I just think that it’s the moments of greatest adversity that create the biggest legends.

Do you remember what it felt like in that frozen stadium in Cleveland, when the Broncos’ returners muffed the kick and it rolled inside the two yard line? I do. I remember yelling at them to get their butts back there and at least fall on the damned thing because it looked like the Browns might just beat them there. And then, when they managed to finally recover the ball, I remember thinking, “Thank God they at least fell on it.”

But I also remember thinking, there was no way they were going to be able to drive it all the way and get the touch down. I mean, I knew it was theoretically possible but not very realistic.

And then, the first couple of plays were almost like nails in the coffin. But then, by some miracle, they managed to eek out a first down. Then, slowly at first, they began to gather momentum. Pretty soon it became evident that the Broncos actually believed they could do it. With each play it became more and more evident that the Browns were begining to believe that the Broncos could do it too. And then, one by one, the rowdy fans of the Browns fell silent as even the most dedicated and ardent began to believe no force on the field that day was going to stop the Broncos from punching it into the endzone. And then it happened, and a legend was born and the legend grew to become "The Drive", one of the greatest comebacks of NFL history, a story that fans of (almost) every team tell their children about.

But none of that would have been possible without that hopeless ball placement inside the Broncos’ own frozen two yard line.

Nostalgia is AWESOME!

Right now I would take a sense of urgency instead. I have seen it this year, and I would like it all week long. From top to bottom.

I’m a fan, what do I know.

Thanks Jack!

I was going to do something like this later today (which is a SNOW DAY! WOO!) but I hadn’t got around to it. You hit the nail on the head; we have nothing to worry about. 90% of the sports audience knew the Chargers would win and the Broncos would lose. Now that that has happened, all hell breaks loose? There is no reasoning behind that. We’re still a young team with the capacity to lay an egg. Luckily, I think this was our last egg of the season. I can feel it.

Oh I remember that

I was hoping that Denver would have enough time left on the clock to hopefully run a 2 minute offense. With Reeves I was sure it was gonna be 3 run plays into the middle and punt and hope the defense would stop the Browns. But a run and a flare to Winder and an Elway scrable and its a first down and it built from there. Overcame the sack on 2nd and 10 and corverted 3 and 18. I feel Denver has really risen to every challenge this season. With a certain loss looming in Cleveland they hung tough and showed great character and won the game, went into NY and beat the NY Bretts quite convincingly. I feel strongly denver will come out with their “A” game and beat the Bills. Will it be easy, no. I honestly cant say they will even cover the spread. But win they will. Denver has only 1 win at home this season over 3 points (KC). But I do expect a spirited effort and a victory in front of the best fans in the NFL

Great Post Jack

and rec’d.

I’ll fess up to the fact that you were responding to my call for them to get it done this week so that I can get tickets to the meaningless game in SD on the 28th and be there for the revenge of what I saw there last year.

Great post Jack

and is it also your first fanpost? Either way, terrific stuff. I had a story all written up called “Crossroads” where I wanted to talk a little about the storylines that are building for a team that literally has no history. I like my heros battle tested and scarred, equal parts perseverance and panache. The root of this team, injuries and all is no different from what it was in July: character, and from that soil grows hope.

This offseason we all tried to define what the “Quest” was going to mean, and as things are winding down, and the real battles are beginning, I am starting to think the “Quest” is about first steps down legendary roads, with no guarantees of greatness, or even of being memorable. These young Broncos have already upped the ante, one game away from a playoff appearance and all the possibilities that carries, in only their first try at this “questing” thing.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I have been waiting for THIS team for almost a decade.

And now they are here.

Concision in style, precision in thought, decision in life.

I like the hero on a quest idea.

To go even farther, I liken this team to the young hero in the first part of the book. He has pick up those batttle scars and suffer a few set backs to make the story more interesting

Thanks firstfan.

Your judgment is important to me.

and yeah, I think we got ‘em right where we want ’em. Isn’t that line just a classic?

I read an article at the beginning of the season

that said that he is now working with the DEA busting in doors of Meth Labs in Texas. Still kicking a$$ and taking names!
