Cutler, Marshall Headed To Pro Bowl; Clady Gets the Shaft
It was a valient effort. Try as we might, we couldn't get Ryan Clady to the Pro Bowl. The two rosters, annouced at 4 PM est include Jay Cutler as one of the 3 quarterbacks(behind starter Peyton Manning and Brett Favre) and Brandon Marshall starting at receiver alongside Andre Johnson.
Clady was left off the team completely in favor of Joe Thomas(CLE), Jason Peters(BUF) and Michael Roos(TEN). I guess it was to be expected. Players and Coaches rarely vote rookies into the game as starters. Joe Thomas, as well as he played last season, was able to get to the game as a reserve. This year, it is hard to imagine how Thomas, and Peters(who missed all of training camp and the first week of the season) could be better than Clady.
Discuss your thoughts here, though I have a feeling I know what you think....

Bummer...hopefully a reserve roll will be in place for Clady...
on a good note, Rivers didn’t make it so that is a positive.

The Shaft is right
There is no Tackle in the NFL who has played anywhere near as well as Clady this season. This is a gross miscarriage of justice.

At least Jake Long didn’t make it. I wonder if Clady could get in as a reserve…

Like I said in another thread:
Clady should go to Hawaii and kick the ass of each and every pro bowl (which now does not deserve to be capitalized, like the hall of shame) tackle, and then kick the ass of every coach and player who did not vote for him.

Congrats to BMarsh
Having Jay behind Favre is just ridiculous (even though head to head we know who’s better).
Amazing that no one from the line that up until last week lead the league in not giving up sacks. Either of the Ryans should be there. I doubt any of the tackles represented have given up fewer that .5 sacks this season!

My Take:
Highlights: No Romo, T.O, Randy Moss and Rivers (ha!)
Some new players are getting put on that finally are getting some cred (Asomugha, Finnigen, Williams)
Lowlights: What is up with all the Jets players getting on the roster?!?! 7 players? East-coast bias much?
I wouldn’t worry too much about Clady not being on the roster. Remember, most players get put on the year after they should be on (i.e. Marshall). I’d put money on Clady becoming a starter next year. Don’t lose sleep over it fellas.
Really happy to see Cutler in there, but it’d be funny to see Favre drop and Rivers be put on as a replacement. That’d be an awkward locker buddy right there.. hehe.

That's very forgiving of you...
but even Randy MF Cross, who hates the Broncos like it is his job, said that Ryan Clady is the best Tackle in the League. He said the Panthers ought to move Peppers to the other side, and leave Clady alone. There is a huge gap between Clady and Roos (the second best tackle,) and this is ridiculous that he was snubbed.

jenkins? favre?
really hard to justify some of these guys. jenkins has been crap for a month now. favre is leading the league in interceptions. Cassel, rivers, pennington each have more yards than him, better qb rating, better td to int ratio. kind of silly

Yet the Dolphins go from 1-15 to 9-5 and Pennington gets the shaft over Favre? lmao Pro Bowl=J-O-K-E

Bogus
No way is Clady not as good as any one of them and better than the other two. Clady absolutely needs to go as a reserve if one of them goes down or bows out.
But what do you expect…this is an award based off opinion from three very different groups and averaged out.

Not really
Given that Warner may end up being the MVP and he’s throwing to Fitz and Boldin, I don’t have a problem that they all made it.
I’m surprised the Steve Smith wasn’t able to crack on of the starting roles, but it’s hard to argue against the Card’s wideouts.

I completely disagree with Favre being selected
That is a reputation pick, just like Shaq making the NBA all-star team this year. Every time I’ve seen the Jets play this year they have seemed to win despite Favre’s bad play and miscues.

I think Favre may have been a little overrated for this pro-bowl.
But in fairness, the Jets would be nowhere without him. On the other hand, the Jets have far too many players, and the east coast bias shows again.

Love Rivers not getting picked.....
But how can Jay be the #3 QB?? seriously if your going to include Farve because he’s “Farve” then make him the #3 QB, Lord knows he sucks!! and Peyton has looked like a deer in the headlights all season, Jay is better then both of these clown’s!!! There needs to be an impartial judge, so that Denver stops being shafted!
by Broncos64ever on Dec 16, 2008 2:57 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
No offense
but I don’t think what you’re saying is coming from an “impartial judge”. Has Cutler been better than Favre? Absolutely. Favre doesn’t deserve to be anywhere near the Pro Bowl in February, but that’s how these votes always go. My real issue with your comment comes with calling Peyton Manning a “clown” and the idea that Denver is getting shafted. While he hasn’t played at his typical HoF level, he looks to be waking up the sleeping giant that is the Colts, and he has carried that team on his back, despite his gimpy knee. In terms of Denver getting the shaft, I think Marshall has an overblown reputation in the league and I wouldn’t have had a problem with him not being selected to the Pro Bowl, so I see his inclusion canceling out the gross omission of Clady (something I knew was going to happen, but it doesn’t stop it from being terrible). Cutler really only got in this year because of Brady’s injury, as there was no way anybody was going to penetrate the Triumvirate of Overrated QB Gods in Brady, Favre, and Manning (yes, I realize I defend Manning and then call him overrated, but the work he has done this season with his underachieving team has been damned impressive in my eyes, despite the rest of his career being overrated to a degree), so we should enjoy a good season out of Cutler being greatly rewarded.
They call me Bubblegum.

Agree that Manning is no clown.
Also agree that a healthy Brady would have gotten in. Still, Favre is way past his retirement age, has received his due already, and I would put Cutler ahead of him.
I’m not really upset about Clady. Is Clady the best LT in the NFL? Absolutely; AND he’s a rookie to boot. The problem is (as I think Guru alludes to), there is kind of a hesitation to put rookies in the bowl. I voted for Clady, but I understand the traditions of the voters too.

What's worse, Clady not getting selected or Jason Peters getting selected?
No one came up to Roos and Clady. I understand there are a lot of athletes that played well enough to get there and lost out to a numbers game, but the jobbing done at offensive tackle is a crying shame.
And I agree with the implications that Rivers probably should have made it and Favre not. But I’m surely glad Phyllis is going to be watching Cutler on TV. :)

is this really surprising? I wish I could say yes, but I would be lying. I honestly figured someone from Denver would get a snub. Lo and behold it was Clady. Look not that big a deal
I am miffed, but I am sure Clady will get plenty of trips, the old saying is it usally takes one year longer than you deserve to get there and you stay two years longer than you deserve. Fact is when we are a dominate team then we will get more recognition, when you lose to the likes of the Raiders, Chiefs, and Jags, then that weighs on peoples minds. I am more worried about winning games, playoffs, and Super Bowls than pro bowls. You can have alll the pro- bowlers in the world, I want championships.

Here is the scary thing
Notice no players on defense, (not that I would expect it), but I would like to see a balance of defensive and offensive players.
I would expect next year Denver will send the following to the pro-bowl:
Cutler, Clady, Marshall, Royal, Hillis, Kern, and maybe Harris
That being said, I really don’t see any pro-bowlers on the defensive side, maybe Woodyard, but we really need some balance as far as talent on that side of the ball.

If Champ had two broken arms I would still pick him.
I think it will be great for Jay to spend some time with Favre and Manning. Favre is the starter out of respect to him, not disrespect to Jay.

Prater needs to learn how to kick from inside the 50.
Then he will be considered. His numbers are eerily comparable to Elam’s first year in Denver, though, so I’m not worried about him.
