Expectations from the begining... Looking at the Positives

With the exceptions of the folks in Laalaa-Land (I visited a few times myself), we all knew at the beginning of the season, that we were not a super bowl team as of yet.

Here are of couple of our goals from the start:

1. Get to the playoffs. Most of us thought this would be through a wild card spot. Who knew the Chargers would collapse like they have.

2. A lofty goal was to win the division. See above. (Reference the paper tiger)

Where are we now?

Star-divide

We are on the cusp of obtaining our high water mark for the season. While we should be smiling from ear to ear, I hear murmurings of folks speaking ill of our beloved Shanny. This post is mainly to provide perspective of our expectation at the begining of the year and seeing how far we come.

Shanny has fielded one of the most powerful offenses in the NFL. The Defense... not so much. However, we don't call Shanny the mastermind for his defensive strategy. Not saying that I always agree with all Shanny does, but there is no other coach in the whole league I would rather have running the Orange and Blue.

We all knew in our hearts at the beginning of the season, that this was a reloading year.

Here is what we know about our team now:

Offense:

1. Jay Cutler is our franchise QB. Jay has played well... and sometimes outstanding. His diabetes is not an issue.

2. We have proven ourselves stout on the O-Line.... who knew it would be so good. We had good expectations, but we are awesome and young. I won't rehash too much about each player and how we should replace or start replacing at center because of age, But we should be a force to deal with on the o-line for years to come. Can I have any more love for Ryan and Ryan?

3. Receiving Core: Marshal has matured emotionally and is settling nicely in his elite status. Eddie Royal was a steal in the draft and will only get better. Together they are one of the top tandems in the league. Add Stokely, the TE's, and the receiving RB's and Jay has lots of options.

4. Running Back. It has been very unfortunate to see our RB situation this year. HT has mentioned conditioning in a few of his latest posts. I could not agree more. However, if it were not for the injuries, we would have never had the opportunity to see Hillis step up. I have never been so excited for preseason for one position. Hillis, Torian, Pitman, Aldridge - Larsen. Power! And who knows what Bobby Turner (thanks to MHR I know his name) will find in the late rounds of the draft. However, I think we are primed for a great backfield at the RB position next year.

Defense

5. D-Line: We knew we needed help on D and that the front seven were a big question mark. That question mark remains. But everyone on the D-line is a year older and that is a good thing for us. We have Powell coming back next year and we have free agency and a draft ahead of us.

6. LB's: Where do I start? There is good and bad. Let's start with the unrealized potential. I was high on Niko. What a disappointment to me personally. Webster's style is not a good fit. Boss played well but went down early like predicted. DJ sat out because of injury. But here is what we know: WW is a player. He doesn't have a spot to play but he is a player. Larsen can play both ways. Do I think he is the most dominate MLB, no; I don't think any of us do. However, we love his sure tackling, hard hitting, and his tenacity to get to the ball. All in all... I think that we are set at weak side and both MLB and strong side upgrades maybe in order. However, Larson is the choice for backup at MLB let Niko and Webster walk. Boss is always a question mark because he can't stay healthy. But focusing on the positive here... we have DJ, WW, Larsen, and Jamie Win. I see lots of movement in the LB core during the next reloading season.

7. DB's: At CB, as I have said before I like Bly when used correctly. Champ is the Champ. We have had some pretty good "rookie" play at CB. What I don't like is our Safety situation. I don't like it at all. Many of our fellow MHR readers have said to fix the front seven before fixing safety. All I can really say about safety play is that I am positively looking at better safety play/support/scheme in the future as this topic is well hashed in other posts.

Special Teams:

8. Special Teams have been a lot more special this year. I see it as a huge improvement over last year. We have missed some "easy" field goals as of late and hopefully we are done with that. But all in all we have been much better.

The Draft:

9. Couldn't be happier. With the play and contribution of our Rookie class. May go down as one of the finest drafts in Bronco history.

Free Agency:

10. Hasn't be a strong point for the Broncos in a long time. But getting Wig from the Chiefs to back up Nails is a highlight. Boss got hurt to early. Niko who? D. Rob is soso. Safeties ... no. WR... Royal made all expendible. Our trade of Colbert for a draft pick (don't know the details) could be seen as a positive for FA.

Summary:

We are not done with this season and may prove to be a force during the playoffs. This is still to be determined. The purpose for this post was not to say the season is over or anything of that nature. If we win it all this year it will not be because we are the best team in the league. However, I won't complain if we pull it off. To prove my point, look at the Giants last year.

What I am saying is that we are a much better team with some outstanding rookie play and some aging of our core younger players. The purpose is to shed light on the healthy expectations we had at the beginning of the year and say we are almost there. We have had some great developmental things happen this year.

It has long been a belief of mine that the Broncos could win the Super Bowl any year we fielded a team. I still believe that. However, with the improvement and development we have seen this year my expectation for such will only increase in the coming years.

I apriciate the effort

But I’m still not entirely pleased with the season so far. I’ve written this over and over again, “lucky” teams will come crashing back to the mean, if not something radical happens.

Lets be honest, if SD played anywhere near like they did last year we would be almost out of the playoff-picture. Failure of a rival doesn’t mean your own season has been a succes.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of areas of this team I think are destined for years of dominance (I mean we can’t possibly get this many RB-injuries next year), but other areas are absolutely mind-numbingly bad.

We are a .500 team, that has been blessed with the second weakest division since the merger, and a little luck, thus being in the front-seat for the playoffs.

One's own perceptions is one's own reality.

Yeah, I agree that SD has really been a failure of their expectations. And I think we did benefit from their failings.

However, I think we are a good team. As most of our loses are to teams I think we should have beat and most of our wins I was scared to lose. I think see some the the fantastic moments in the winning games over good teams has shown me that we are a good team. The only reason in my opinion that we are as you said a “.500” team is because we are young and emotional. I think we are working some of those things out.

Now if we continue to lose games we should win next year …. I will be more worried.

As to our division… SD will be better next year with the return of "Roid"man. He is the face of their D. And the Chiefs will be better with more experience and another draft. In fact I seem them as the best of the worst teams. They will return to glory. We will be better too. faiders… ah not so much. I expect them to be worse. I feel sorry for all of those top draft picks that are stiffed in chokeland. If I was a top 5 draft pick, I would pray every night not to be drafted by the defeated fader nation.

Very good point.. Touché! That has, at least, the same probabillity of being true, as my theory.

The raider-point: I agree – If i were drafted by them, I would pull an “Elway” on them. I mean – the Lions have, at least, hope!

I have to agree that this has been a step forward

My biggest frustartion has been the inconsistency week in and week out, does that boil down to young players or coaching, or a mixture of both, I don’t know. Obviously there are many areas where this team can improve, I am extremely happy that the team has appeared to hit gold with the offensive line, I really think championship teams start with dominate lines on both sides of the ball, so when I look at the D-line, it annoys me that we don’t seem to be able to get talent in there. I think if we had a d line like NY Giants, this team would be in line for multiple Super Bowl championships. I think regardless of the end of this season, we have generally gotten better, next season will be a focus on getting more talent on the defensive side of the ball and consistency throughout the year. We do that, and this team should be very good for a long time.

Forecasting

Several posters, Ht in particular, went into the season noting that with a team that young (and those projected than are ancient, creaky men compared to the team we fielded) that we would have great victories and frustrating loses. Guess what? Yep.

I salute the team we have, the progress we have made and look forward the the next chapters as they are written.

Nice post Yellowstone. rec'd

This season has definitely been a roller coaster. In fact I cannot remember any season where the ‘highs and lows’ had such a monsterous gap between them.

I just hope we win this weekend. I do not want to have to go into San Diego on the last week in a must win situation—our team is too young.

I also don’t want to go into the playofffs with an 8-8 record.

The best defense is a good defense!
And last week's young players. Yes!

We won't go into the playoffs with an 8-8 record.

We either go into the playoffs at 9-7 or 10-6. If we hit 8-8 SD does…

Actually.. As I was typing this i figured out I was wrong. If SD loses to TB and we lose the next 2, we could goto the playoffs @ 8-8 because SD would be 7-9… Man that would be horrible…

Screw it.

Lets just win the next 2. go into the playoffs @ 10-6, and leave SD in the dust @ 6-10

Thanks for emphasizing the positives

Too many bloggers focus on negatives, looking at the positives helps. For instance, we should be thankful that less than 10 RBs have been injured :)

Seriously, I hate to see anyone get injured, but it has been interesting to find out what WW, Larsen and Josh Bell could do as starters.

The future looks so bright that we're going to need blue and orange sunglasses!

Yeah this makes signing/trading/releasing/drafting decisions a little easier. That is know what the talent level is on the bench. And we are getting there. We are building a better team.

Free agency was a success because they avoided expensive, long-term busts

Look, the returns on the field to the free agents are mixed. But what’s nice here is that they made no risky long-term commitments. Niko has disappointed. But he plays well on special teams, he’s got only two more years on his deal, and his cap number is relatively small. Boss also has a short deal (do injuries affect future cap numbers). Wiegman has been great, especially for the price.

My argument here is that free agency has been successful because it has helped the team in a few places without causing long-term cap problems. If you look at the lessons of the past, this is a huge and important improvement. It means there will be more money to lock up the kids long-term, and more left over for future draft picks and free agents after that’s done.

After the expensive free agent busts that have come in over the years, this is a very important development.

Solid Points
After the expensive free agent busts that have come in over the years, this is a very important development.

Free Agency is much improved, not in terms of players really acquired, but in strategy and long term benefit. Again I say solid

Overall

the talent level of the team was so low that they could cast the net wide and far and reel in lots of small time contributors, hoping to reap enough starting and backup man-games to justify the low spending. Weigmann alone made it a successful strategy (a benefit of this “far and wide” approach to free agency is you only need a very small% of return on investment to have a successful haul.) while guys like Niko, Manuel, MCCree, Pittman, Boss and DJax all will provide a solid pool of backups from which a respectable and effective number of man-games can be drawn in 2009. Colbert was the only flop, and he was turned into gold by the front office by nabbing a draft pick for him. A number of even lesser players have come and gone, which should happen every year as part of a leaguwide evaluation scheme.

One drawback to any free agency strategy is that it has a fundmental flaw not inherent in the draft: long term forecasting. Free agents tend to be on the second half of their careers or later. As the overall talent level of this team rises through the draft, the Goodman front office will be challenged even more to make their free agent signings effective, and being able to cast the net “far and wide” will be a much less viable solution. They will have to retract the number of overall signings, but not sacrifice the number of man-games they acquire through free agency, no easy task, and a task that has separated the men from the boys in front offices around the league.

I love the way they approached free agency in 08, because it was true to the nature of a rebuilding team, with no crippling contradictions that would hurt the team long term. But 09 free agency should look slightly different, and if successful, with no set backs, 2010 free agency should look a lot different.

At each step of the rebuilding phase it is important to see the Broncos accurately and honestly assessing the talent level of the team, and addressing its free agent signings accordingly. And from a fan’s point of view, it should look like higher quality free agents are being targeted in subsequent years.

Concision in style, precision in thought, decision in life.

or draft picks

i am major into trading up next season for at least 1 impact player at all 3 levels of the d. if we could just nail a dt, mlb, and safety on the first day, i think we are on our way. we need to nail them, though. i’m not opposed to a free-agent d-lineman either, even a proven de to pair with doom. but we need a dt first, to pair with thomas or ? laurinitus and a free-agent dt would do wonders, in my opinion.

great post, yellowstone. i had the broncs at 11-5, and the 6th seed in the playoffs, and a loss at indy. a playoff berth is considered a successful season by me, that’s all i asked for. one-and-done, the rest is gravy. especially with the struggles the last two seasons, it is that much sweeter. champagne in 2 days?
