Monday's With Shanny -- Week 17

On the injuries at the running back position

"Selvin Young had a ruptured disc and the MRI was positive. Obviously we will put him on I.R. and hopefully the disc will go back into position where he won't have to have an operation. It will take a month or so to figure out where he is at. P.J. Pope tore his hamstring, and he will be put on I.R. for six to eight weeks. Cory Boyd will come onto our active roster as well as Alex Haynes. Tatum Bell is in good shape."

On RB Selvin Young returning in the game after his injury

"He hurt it early in the first quarter, and it shows a lot about his toughness to be able to play the way he did with a ruptured disc. He knew we needed him in the game and he kept on playing. It is obviously not good news."

On if he could have imagined at the beginning of the season going through so many running backs

"I think anything is possible, but I would say you were completely nuts if you said we were going to go through seven or eight running backs."

On why the Broncos struggled in the red zone against Buffalo

"Obviously there are a number of things involved but we still have to get better. Two-for-six is not very good, but to move the ball like we did was a positive. I thought Jay (Cutler) played exceptionally well during the game. We put a lot of pressure on him, but it is always disappointing when you move the ball like that and don't score touchdowns. We had two turnovers and that didn't help as well. You always want to score enough to win, that is the bottom line. If you don't, it is disappointing. We were down there enough to win but we didn't get it done."

On losing two more running backs to injury

"The good thing about it is that we have Cory Boyd who has been with us and been activated. He is used to the game plan, so it is not like we don't have any body in there. Alex Haynes was with us for a couple weeks and he knows the system. We have Spencer Larsen back which is a positive. We also have Andrew Pinnock that we have had for a while now, so he is familiar with our terminology and system. Even though we have had a couple more guys go on I.R., we still feel like we have guys that know our system, terminology and how to execute so that is a plus."

On if he will evaluate the strength and conditioning program after the season because of injuries

"We will look at everything, especially when injuries deal with groins and hamstrings. We will evaluate all of that stuff at the end of the season, we always do."

On K Matt Prater's kickoffs

"There were a couple pooches. We kicked a couple right, a couple left. We always have a game plan. He didn't have one of his best days kicking off."

On what he says to the team after a tough loss

"I think everyone is disgusted. Anytime you have an opportunity to win the AFC West, it is very disappointing. If you don't feel that way then you are not made of the right stuff. From coaches to support staff, everybody is disappointed. The only thing you can do is look at the film and look at your mistakes. You have to look at the things you can do to get better and move onto San Diego. That is what I did. You come home and you can't eat because you are disappointed considering everything you have worked for. There is only one thing to do and that is get on to San Diego and get the job done. We can still win the AFC West. We have to play a much better game but we have done it a number of times. Hopefully we can put it together this week."

"I think everybody looks at themselves and asks, ‘What could I have done better to be the difference in the game?' If you do that, you have a chance to get better and that is what good teams do. We will do that today and go into San Diego knowing we have the same opportunity we had a week ago."

On if Chargers QB Philip Rivers belongs in the Pro Bowl

"There is no question about it. Look at his touchdown to interception ratioo and how they are throwing the football. He is playing exceptionally well. He has a great feel of defenses, pressure and how to attack the other team's strengths and weaknesses. Those are some of the reasons he has been so successful. He is a competitor."

On the Chargers getting back into the playoff race

"They have three wins in a row and if you take a look at their loses, one of them was from Pittsburgh. They played pretty good at Indy but lost in the last seconds. They are feeling pretty good about there team and they are playing a lot better."

On CB Champ Bailey

"He is fine, there were no set backs and he will be ready to go."

On the injury to CB Josh Bell

"He had a sprained ankle during the game. The MRI was negative but he was quite sore. His knee is a little bit sore as well so we will have to wait and see."

On T Ryan Clady and G Chris Kuper playing banged up

"They played great and they are warriors. For both of them to hang in there all game and play at the level they did, I was really proud of them."

On RB Tatum Bell's play against the Bills

"He did a good job. He came out and played well. He played a lot of snaps and we put a little pressure on him with a couple guys getting hurt early."

Offensive gameplan for Sunday night............

San Diego will blitz blitz and blitz some more…They remember Cutler surgically dissecting them in week 2 and knowing our running game lately is non existant the Bolts will throw everything and everybody at Cutler..Bubble screens, Cutler rolling out utilizing his athletic ability will buy him some time..Try something different and use Eddie Royal in some wildcat packages keeping the D-line honest…They know Cutler is the main artery so T Bell,Boyd, insert name hear need to run like they never have….We all are expecting a high scoring shoot out but we must be balanced to win this game….When they blitz they must pay or it will be a long night for us…With that said i would be estatic with a win at San Diego to get in feeling that the Hoculi call will be put to rest. Guru said it last week Cutler and company need to win a big game that means something…We lose we go home we win and the momentum is with us and we make some noise in the playoffs……..Memo to the Broncos coaches: Gameplan to win dont gameplan not to lose……

P.S. Cutler,Marshall,Scheffler may that training session in Atlanta pay divednds Sunday Night!!!!

IR for 6 to 8 weeks?

Note to coach, season ends in one week, playoffs (assuming we make them) start in two weeks, if he is on IR he is done, or is there some lopehole I am missing, didn’t know you could put him on IR for some selected duration.

IR for 6-8 weeks?

He probably meant it will take 6-8 weeks to recover.

To bear up under loss, to fight the bitterness of defeat and the weakness of grief, to be victor over anger, to smile when tears are close, to resist evil men and base instincts, to hate evil and to love love, to go on when it would seem good to die, to seek after the glory and the dream, to look up with unquenchable faith in something evermore about to be, that is what any man can do, and so be great.

Selvin Young has a lot of toughness, but

I wonder how long his body will hold up to the rigors of the NFL. I got his rookie card a year ago yesterday, so I hope he recovers and makes the team next year. He is a heads up football player and makes contributions in many areas, so he has a good chance to make the team.

The future looks so bright that we're going to need blue and orange sunglasses!

Most important part of that presser

Shannahan acknowledging the off-season evaluation of the training staff, particularly with so many hammy injuries.

GREAT NEWS.
