What Denver Needs to do in the Off-Season and Why They Will be Awesome Next Year
The Denver Broncos have had a rough year on defense again. Now entering the 2008 off-season, they need to make a lot of changes on defense. Their defensive struggles have come from the front seven. In the game of football, everything starts in the trenches. The Broncos do not have enough talent on the D-Line to get pressure on the opposing quarterback or enough leverage to stop the run. So the Broncos need to consider drafting DTs and DEs. I say that Denver should draft two of each in the first four rounds. So now our D-Line is secure. Next comes the linebackers who have also had issues this season. While they possess incredible speed, they haven't been good at stopping the run. So Denver also needs two LBs to make a difference in the LB corps. That leaves Denver with one safety in the 7th round. As for a RB, pick one up in FA. I'm pretty sure Derrick Ward is a free agent after this year.

Now that the defense is set, all the offense needs to do is take care of the ball. Taking care of the football comes with maturity which, as we all know, this Denver team doesn't have much of (when I say that, I mean it from a perspective of age not of handling the media). Jay Cutler is only in his 3rd year and he has already earned himself a Pro Bowl spot. Philip Rivers may have been, as much as I hate to say it, been a Pro Bowl snub, but Jay has led this team as best as he can (especially for a 3rd year QB) and I think he deserves it more than Philip Rivers or Brett Favre. Plus, Philip Rivers is in his 4th year, so when Jay gets four years of experience, he will absolutely dominate.
Look how many times Brandon Marshall has fumbled the ball; but also look at how young he still is. As time goes on, he will take care of the football better just like Jay. I'm telling ya, if Denver has a good draft, and an even better off-season, we might have three rings. GO DENVER BRONCOS!!!!!!!!

Good post B-holic...lets think defense
I agree with DT being something we should look for but not DE. I think Moss is growing up and will find himself next year. I would rather look for a top notch Safety, A middle linebacker, and another Corner. Our weakest link right now in two areas: Preasure up the middle, a strong secondary (MLB) presence in the middle, and a true free safety. Marcus Thomas is going to be very good, will have many sacks before his career is over, but is lacking a strong MLB to move forward. No great tackle can move forward if there is nothing behind him to back him up. We need a strong Middle Linebacker. The weakest point we have right now is Safety. We need to find ( either in the draft or open up the wallet) and find a true free safety. That is our weakest point right now—we need a playmaker (to compliment Champ and Bly in the secondary) that can both cover and hit.
MLB and Safety………….but mostly MLB. A great Middle Line Backer frees up so much of the field….priceless.
A great Free and true Safety allows Bly and Bailey do what they do best……INT’S
The best defense is a good offense!

Good points Mike, and rec'd.
I really think our DE’s will mature into excellent players. A while back HT wrote a great piece on how one totally dominant DT can make the other DT outstanding as well. I thought D-Rob was that dominant DT and I was wrong, but I still think D-Rob can be the Other outstanding DT. Of course I was the jackass that thought K2 was our total answer at MLB. The problem is that it takes two or three years to develope into that dominant DT. I say go with FA for DT and work with Carlton Powell. Draft a stud MLB and a safety.
Thanks for the post broncoholic. I am sure much more will be discussed in the reloading season.

It would be really nice to add a durable running back . . .
. . . but will one of those come in the draft, or via free agent signing? I’ve loved this system of plugging in running backs and just hoping one rushes for a hundred yards per game, but at some point you have to think about picking up a feature back that is certainly going to carry the load through a whole season. Clinton Portis had the most potential of being exactly that for us, but the Orange and Blue definitely needed a corner at the point when they traded him, which made that trade such a good one at the time.
Yes, I am concerned about the defensive side of the ball too. But Steve O’ brings up a good point (which I’ll embellish on) . . . NOTHING helps a defense more than an effective running attack. I think we have the offensive line pieces to lead a good rushing attack. I know we have a quarterback conducive to aiding an effective rushing attack. And I’m pretty sure we have the receivers (sorry, RECEIVER) to help neutralize teams that key on an effective running game.
Also, I’m going to disagree with broncoholic’s assessment of Philip Rivers as a Pro Bowl snub. Philip Rivers will NEVER be a Pro Bowl snub. Face it – if Eli Manning had not requested (and received – on ‘04 Draft Day) a trade to the Giants (ironically enough, my brother’s favorite team), San Diego would have had at least one Super Bowl title if not two with the collective of talent (Tomlinson, Gates, Jackson, etc.) that would have surrounded him. Hell, if you replace Rivers with Eli in ’06, San Diego might have gone 16-0 and completed a perfect season in Super Bowl XLII instead of going 14-2 and flaming out against the New England “Flying Elvii”.
At no point have I ever seen Rivers make his team better with effective decision-making or leadership skills. I might also add that Rivers is, by all accounts, a complete jackass (then again, others say the same about Cutler). Put him on a team with talent, and he just might do enough to help you win. Put him on a team like, say, the Rams . . . and you get an 0-16 squad. And that’s why he will never (and SHOULD never) be a Pro Bowl candidate . . . much less a snub.
Alright, I’m off my soap box. God do I hope this team does not lose in San Diego this Sunday . . . on national television, no less. GET IT DONE, BRONCOS!

If Denver wants a power running back from the draft, think about drafting the Florida State running back Antoine Smith

Just watching the Champs Sports Bowl
And PJ Hill looks like a pretty good blend of power and speed (looks about as fast as TD) and appears to be a one-cut runner.

Nice post....
But a couple of things I would like to see:
1/ I think we might have our MLB is Larsen. We need a strong side backer more than a MLB. I like Cushing from USC as he has had rushing DE experience in a 3/4 as well. He is a beats, will play thru injuries. We would also have the option of moving DJ back to MLB, WW at weakside and Cushing at SS.
2/ Josh Barrett will be good and will keep developing, and he will be one of our safetys. We have 2 options as I see it. Barrett becomes free safety (he has the speed to it) and we put WW at strong safety. I relly think that the Broncos will look long and hard at Woodyard there. If we go option 1. we will look at Taylor Mays. For speed and hitting, with Mays and Barrett, we will be over the top and set for years to come. Another option would be Patrick Chung from O regon in the 2nd round.
3/ We need a good corner. I think this is almost our biggest need. I would like to see us take a crack at Nmandi, but dont be surprused if we go corner 1st round.
4/ We need Albert Haynesworth. PERIOD. A rotation of him, D Rob and Marcus would be AWESOME and free up Doom and Moss. Moss will come on next year and has been pretty good this season.
5/ We may take a RB in mid rounds but we dont need to go one in the first couple of rounds. We have a RB’s I think in Torain, Hillis and Alridge (and watch out to see if Cory Boyd could step up). If Boyd is good, then we will see Hillis develop into a Pro Bowl H Back like Dallas Clark.
This team would have a great look and be dominant.
What do you guys think?

What positions lack young talent?
Looking over the Broncos current defensive roster to see which position need a youth movement.
At Safety only Josh Barrett is young while the other three McCree, Manual, and Fox are all about 30.
At CB we have Paymah, Williams and Bell being young, while the starters Bailey and Bly are already in their 30’s.
At Linebacker Woodyard and Larsen are rookies and Bailey, Winborn and Webster will be 30+ next year.
The DE’s have Moss, Crowder, and Dumervil with Engelberger and Ekuban both looking at 33 next year.
The DT’s are young with Powell and Thomas with Peterson and Shaw about 30.
So who of the 30+ player should be replaced on the roster with youth? Also which of the younger player do we give up on and replace?
With 12 player looking at 30+ next year may guess is that at least half will not be Broncos next year. I would look to draft one each of DE,DT,ILB, OLB, FS,SS, CB and put first day priority on MLB, Safety and DE.
