Lighting Up The Scoreboard -- Week 17 -- Denver at San Diego
Ordinarily, when I want to do analysis of a team and an upcoming matchup, I look at a few games. I felt like that wasn't really necessary in this case. I watched the Week 2 game between Denver and San Diego, and saw everything I needed to see.
To wit, consider these numbers: 34 First Downs, 145 Rushing Yards, 341 Passing Yards, 486 Total Yards, 34:00 Time of Possession, 39 Points, 1 Turnover. A story was told in September, one which is very easily understood. The San Diego Chargers cannot stop the Denver Broncos.
So, all of this nonsense you hear about the Chargers being superior is just that, nonsense. It is a proven fact that the Broncos can move the ball up and down the field against the Chargers. Below the fold, we'll talk about how it gets done.
What San Diego's Defense Looks Like on Video
In a word, they're pretty lousy. They do fairly well against the run, but nobody really runs on them much, because they're very vulnerable against the passing game. In Week 2, the Chargers did a lot of dropping back into soft zones, and Cutler and the Broncos shredded them. They got no pressure, which is something the Chargers can't have.
I watched some of the Week 12 Sunday night game vs. Indianapolis, because I wanted to see how the switch to Ron Rivera had affected the defensive schemes of the Chargers. The answer is, they blitz a little more than they did early on. They are still using a 30 front, but playing like a 40 front when they blitz. By that, I mean, the rush schemes aren't that exotic, and mostly consist of overloads with the OLB and ILB to one side or the other, or both ILBs. It will remind you of what the Eagles or Giants do with their blitz packages (Rivera is a Jim Johnson disciple, like Steve Spagnuolo is.)
When the Chargers blitz, they'll man up. When they don't blitz, they'll play soft zones and try to tackle the receivers. Either way, the Broncos can beat them. I feel pretty confident of that, and I would expect that the team does too.
How to Attack The Chargers
Throw the football. Specifically, I would come out in shotgun on nearly every play, and spread the Chargers out. This was the strategy in Week 2, and it was extremely effective.
You have to be very creative with running the ball, due to the personnel limitations at RB. I would feature a lot of WR screens, and treat them as a way to run the ball. I also liked the QB sweep left play which we saw a couple times last week. Antonio Cromartie is not the most willing tackler in the world, and I am sure he'd shy away from getting hit by Clady. I think you can get 10+ yard gains 3-4 times with that.
The Chargers have a really hard time with TEs and Slot WRs. Scheffler got 2 TDs against them in Week 2, and that weakness has continued throughout the season. Nothing would be better than seeing Matt Wilhelm manned up against Scheffler again. (As a side note, Wilhelm is from Cleveland, and he and I have some common acquaintances. I've been told that he's dumber than a bag of hammers.) He's definitely the weak link of their LB corps, and should be targeted.
On the back end, the Chargers have some guys who are good players individually. Particularly, Quentin Jammer is very good in coverage, but he can't catch. Antonio Cromartie and Antoine Cason are both average in coverage, but both have excellent hands. Eric Weddle is excellent at FS, and is their best all-around secondary player in my opinion. Cromartie had a nightmare game in Week 2 against Marshall, and I would go right back at that again. I also think you can get Royal deep against Jammer, and it is definitely worth a try.
In short, the underneath stuff is always there against San Diego, and they have nobody who can handle Marshall. Running will be a struggle, but moving the ball won't be. I expect Brett Kern to have a quiet day, and I expect the Broncos to move the ball with minimal problems. If they score touchdowns instead of field goals, and they don't turn the ball over, the Broncos will win the game, regardless of what the defense does. Go Broncos!!!

On beating SD
I am not a fan of the WR screens, we have had mixed results and seems like SD will be prepared for that, I really think we will have to use the TE alot, I would prefer some more traditional screens to Bell on the flanks where he can be at his best. I agree that running the ball against SD is going to have to be limited if we want to keep up with them. Maybe some draws out of the shotgun to keep them honest.

THE SPREAD
Personally I’ve never been a fan of the spread O. If The Broncos don’t start a FB (A. Pinnock would be awesome!) then I think The Broncos should’nt even put a RB in the game either. I say put B.Marshall in the backfield and send him in motion to empty the backfield. That’s a match up Wet Dream, a linebacker on Marshall!? Any thoughts?

Nobody would cover Marshall with a LB
regardless of where he lined up. If a guy like that were in the backfield, I’d audible to zone, pre-snap. I expect to see a lot of zone from the Chargers today, because they can’t cover the Broncos down the field.

I think Denver wins and the reason is...
You need to win one game, just one, and you can go with Norv Turner and Philip Rivers or Mike Shanahan and Jay Cutler….Exactly!

They've been somewhat better, but only when they've gotten pressure
and I don’t think they can get pressure against the Broncos

It's on JC this time
This game comes down to an offensive track meet going both ways, and could very well be one of those “last guy with the ball wins” kind of games. I think this game goes a long way in defining Jay Cutler as a winner. He’s got the sexy stats and numbers – but I’m still not sold on the intangible will to win. No overthrowing open receivers when it counts most. No throwing tantrems when things aren’t going just right. We know that our defense is suspect, our special teams are suspect, and our running game is just too beat up to be effective. Cutler has a wealth of weapons in Marshall, Royal, and Stokely at WR and in Scheffler and Graham at TE. Line ‘em up, send ’em out, and find the open receiver, because against the Chargers pass D there will be open receivers. And enough of the Superman impersonations, Jay. We know that you can throw the ball hard… but at some point you have to rely on your head to find the open guy – instead of trying to throw a laser through the defense every time. Win or lose, I’m excited for the future of this young Broncos offense – and it will be interesting to see if Cutler can take that next step Sunday night.

What a Year
Here are some of my take aways from this year.
- I have never seen running backs go down like this. condition coach.
- Moss and Crowder busts. Time to move on.
-Clady,Royal,Hillis Nice. No only if we could get defensive draft choices right
-Cutler has made some big mistakes and has been forcing the ball to Marshall
-Our safeties suck. All 15 of them?
-We are a little to conservative on defense. Lets blitz
-I never thought we would win the division, but to be up 3 games and not be able to win another game is priceless. It is not easy being a broncos fan
-Marshall is not showing the speed I thought he had on deep passes
-Offensive line has been great. Nice job
-There is no way we win tomorrow. Great way to end the year….. Not
- Who would have said we would loose to KC and Oakland this year

IDEA
I guess no one liked my idea….. neither did I. Start a FB, run the ball on first down !

I like the idea!
I think the SD 3-4 is vulnerable to our zone block and we can control the time of possesion. I don’t know if Pinnock is the answer, but I would sure like to see us run the ball.

YEP
we’ve needed a FB on the field for the last four games if you ask me. Run the ball on first down, play action second down, and then and Only then do you use shotgun formation. Plus I think shotgun in the red zone is the reason they sputter in that erea. Control the ball, control the clock, control the game, thats how you win in the NFL.

LIKE THE COLTS
I think The Broncos have been trying to be like the colts but even the colts have faultered in the red zone this year.

Watching the Colts game this morning
They said that the Colts lead the league in red zone efficiency (70+ percent TDs).

The Spread O sucks
The spread O is spectacular to watch when it works on all cylinders but even then it does’nt set anythng up and does’nt control the clock. One missed pass and your TEAM is behind and your D is back on the field. 90% of The Broncos 3&outs start with an incomplete pass on first down! The Broncos need to get back to what got them to the Super Bowl and thats running on first down, and play action. (If only Jay could sell the play action better he does it like it’s a burden) Doing this controls the Linbackers and safeties, once you control them you controlthe game.

You are right on the running part
however, nobody fears our running game anymore so it is hard to fake the run and go for the pass. SD had been blitzing more since Rivera became the D-coordinator so we need to take advatage and get some screens. The Broncos beat SD’s defense in week 2 by having Culter dink and dunk down the field. No need for the big play just take what is given and that is how can win this game.

Here is the thing...
I don’t advocate running spread stuff every week, but there is little choice today. For one thing, it’s the best way to attack the Chargers. The Broncos will have to score nearly every time they have the ball to keep up with San Diego today. The bigger deal is that the RB personnel is so thin that it’s really unlikely that running the ball with FB and Tatum Bell will be effective. As the Broncos have been doing on defense, they have to make the best of the personnel situation today on offense.

I have to agree there is limited options Sunday
Based on our RB situation, I don’t see us running much power plays with any success, but who knows, maybe the coaching staff goes for the changeup and decides to go to a power running game
