"These guys?" the Pro Bowl quarterback asked, gesturing to the players celebrating behind him. "San Diego? No, I don’t think so. I think Indy’ll handle ‘em pretty good. We really can’t stop anybody, and that’s the bottom line."
Jay Cutler's Thoughts on San Diego
I appreciate his honesty, I really, and truly do, but it is time for Cutler and the rest of the Broncos to stop worrying about the Chargers or Raiders or Chiefs or anyone else in the NFL and start looking in the mirror...

This morning Matt Wilhelm will read this and smile a little when he thinks about his “Jay Cutler is a punk” statement last week.

I like it
Expressing true emotions is generally a shortage in modern sports.
I think it, in some ways, can be positive to have an enemy-image to focus on.
Besides looking in the mirror now, or in a week seems irrelevant to me. It’s not like Jay has a hole lot to improve on!

Area #1
Red Zone turnovers….
Can. Not. Happen. No excuses.
Jay Cutler is not above culpability here and the sooner he gets that the sooner the Broncos will take that next step.

I agree, after getting hammered by 52 points, he doesn't need to be talking trash about SD
I understand he doesn’t like Rivers, but for a blown call, he would be 0-5 versus the Chargers.

a blown call on a ridiculous, unforced
red zone turnover, no less! That fumble, had it been called properly, was bad slapstick. It was Tony Romo with lower stakes. I just hope it’s not symptomatic of a chronic problem with performance in the clutch….

Cutler has shown as good performances in the clutch as any QB
the last 2 years…
All but 2 of Denvers wins this year was clutch!

Well I agree Cutler has had good games
But he also has stunk up some games too that we should of won, Raiders, Chiefs, Jags come to mind, and we wouldn’t even been talking about this game.

You hit it right on the button.
Those have got to stop……..and I mean now.
On the Cutler/Rivers ordeal. I think the media needs to let it go. However I don’t think they will. Cutler on the other hand if asked any questions regarding Rivers, he just need to say “no comment” or something like that. I think it is time to let this thing go. Just shrug it off.

Of course there will be some things to sort out
But you can’t possibly blame him for thinking his defense cost him some playoff-action!
And yes, redzone turnovers cannot happen! But can you blame the kid for forcing it a bit when he knows that 3 points will only end up being a 4 point net loss, because his defense will let the opponent march right down the field? In meaningfull time last night, the defense, IIRC, came up with a field goal stop and 1 punt!
Besides in this particular game, the turnovers wasn’t exactly on him. Marvelous coverage on a seemingly good matchup, and a batted pass that ended up in a 300 pounders hands!

I agree, Guru
There have been several times where Cutler has actually come across as a bit of a punk. Yelling at your teammates in full view of the entire country is just not the proper way to go about things. To me, there have been two QB’s who did this regularly – Dan Marino throughout his career (where did that get him) and a young Peyton Manning. Luckily for the Colts and their fans, Manning outgrew his petulance and is now the unquestioned leader and worthy of boundless respect.
Cutler has the physical tools, he has the coach and he has the receivers. Now, he needs a running game, a bit of humility and some growing up to do. There’s nothing wrong with wearing your hat backwards, but it should be at the end of the game when you’re picking at the scraps of victory. Not in the middle of a game you’re battling through or getting smoked during. I realize it’s just his appearance, but as the clear leader of this football team, Cutler has to look the part as well. He can’t look like he’s too cool for school or doesn’t care.

Absolutely
I thought about this over the last few weeks as I listened to Cutler ramp up the trash talk about Rivers. I hate to say it but this time around Rivers was the bigger man. He just handled his business professionally, didn’t get sucked into the mud and let his play do the talking.
Cutler needs to stop worrying about Phillip Rivers, shut it and do his talking on the field. Go out there and win games, and then people can say what they want.
But the facts are the Chargers have owned the Broncos for some time now, and all the talk in the world won’t change that.

Jay doesnt care about Rivers
I suspect that if the media quit asking him questions about Rivers, Jay would never talk about him. It’s not HIS fault that the first thing any interviewer asks him RE: the Chargers is, “Do you still hate Phillip Rivers?”

Jay's comments
“While yet unspoken, you are master of the word. After it is spoken, the word is master of you.”
Okay, that said, Jay’s comments in the article weren’t as bad as Phyllis’ trashing the Patriots.
Anyway, I’m betting Favre bows out of the Pro Bowl and Phyllis goes instead, so Jay and the P will be teammates. Sound like fun?
To bear up under loss, to fight the bitterness of defeat and the weakness of grief, to be victor over anger, to smile when tears are close, to resist evil men and base instincts, to hate evil and to love love, to go on when it would seem good to die, to seek after the glory and the dream, to look up with unquenchable faith in something evermore about to be, that is what any man can do, and so be great.

Great quote, b.
I’ll have to remember that next time I post to Bolts from the Blue. LOL
Here’s my reply to a Bolt fan who asked how we can possible root for a guy like Cutler:
——
How can we root for him?
Look, I’m not going to try to defend Cutler to you guys since (a) you clearly don’t like him for perfectly valid reasons and (b) he’s clearly not helping himself by acting so serious and harboring resentments that experienced pros should just shrug off. I am NOT condoning his attitude and I don’t blame you for thinking ill of him. But he’s young and I do believe he is trying his best in a bad situation. If the Broncos owned the Bolts for as long and as humiliatingly as the Bolts have owned the Broncos in recent years, you might be forgiven for a little misplaced resentment. Wouldn’t make you a prick or an egomaniac.
Elway was a bit of a prima donna early on, as well. And sure Cut has some talent, but I’m sure I don’t need to remind you guys that there’s a difference between a leader and a Leaf. Cut fights hard for his team and rightly or wrongly speaks his mind. This was his second full year as a starter, and he has a long way to go. But we’re proud of play and his leadership so we don’t mind the outspokenness.
And until he does grow up a little, I’m sure you guys are secure enough in your fandom to handle a little drama from an opposing QB. From my perspective, I’m certainly cutting Rivers some slack in that area. (A QB who taunts another QB from the sidelines during a rout? You must admit, that’s a little bizarre.) But it’s all good. The game is over. Now go get LT a Superbowl — he deserves it!

Well...
LOL
Well you’re entitled to your opinion, which certainly may be more informed than mine. I’m just thinking back to life when LT was all they had, when we whipped them every year. He was blue collar all the way back then, never really got down on things like he did this year. He just kept fighting every year, praying SD was going to someday put an actual team around him. (Some might even draw some parallels to a certain Denver HOFer, but I will NOT — repeat, NOT — go there. I’ve taken enough licks on the Chargers message board in the past 24 hrs defending Cutler — I really don’t need to alienate myself from you guys as well for similar audaciousness. LOL)
And of course I’m not stating the league should just hand LT a trophy. Or that it’s likely he’ll get one this year. What I am saying is that it’s cool with me to see him have a fair shot at it. If he wins a ring, of course he’ll deserve it because they’ll have beaten vastly superior teams to get there. And of course if Denver was still in the mix, I’d feel much much differently. But I will say this — whatever LT did this year (cried, b*tched, moaned, complained, hissy fitted) to guilt trip his team obviously worked.
Now the Rivers for MVP chatter I’ve been hearing from them — that’s just crazy talk. : )

When exactly do football players talk about things they're not asked?
The correct response from Jay is…
“No comment.”
“Philip Rivers is a great quarterback and is playing this Sunday. Hopefully next year it will be our team in the playoffs.”
“I have no problems with Philip Rivers. Let’s talk about something else.”
“When we met up after the game, I congratulated Philip on a great game and wished him luck in the playoffs. Hopefully he and the Chargers represent the the AFC West well.”

Im fine with players stating how they feel....
but just dogging a team after they just embarrassed you just makes no sense. I hate the chargers more than any other team in the league, and even i had to give them credit for playing a great game. jay is obviously frustrated with the defense and with all that has happened in the last few weeks. jay just needs to mature a little bit more. I love it!
Yes leadership and all that, but let’s call a spade a spade – that’s the worst defence in the NFL and has been for two years. Imagine how it feels to have go ahead scores CONSTANTLY answered with opposition TD drives.. every frickin time.. not field goals, certainly not three and outs.. I imagine it to be really disheartening and while the national media shows our QB constantly waiting on the sideline, often perplexed, it’s just not fair to not say ‘if Denver had even a hint of a morsel of a defence they’d be in every game.’ Did the Chargers even punt in that game? This will be the biggest off season in the Shanahan era and all the money in Bowlen’s wallet won’t make a difference if we don’t get a sharp mind in there to draft, aquire, teach and implement a new defence.

D-fence or DEFENSE
A quick spelling lesson for horsebrain, like the Broncos need tackling instruction and repitition. All of Slowik’s state of the art teaching tools are softly interesting to padded players. The D needs some guys who love to hit, and to have full contact in practice so they can find the true killers. These practices would also weed out the backs who wilt and get injured.
It has to be frustrating to Shanahan, because he cannot keep a running back healthy. He tries to let them keep fresh legs. Where is the line between fresh and soft. Maybe he needs to find tougher guys who LIKE CONTACT and not just wide-open spaces made available through MASTERMIND STRATEGY and chop blocks. Atwater, Smith and Wright have covered their heads with the throwback orange jerseys, and somewhere Larry Canada weeps.

My opinion
We all rip players when they are not honest. So Jay was asked a question and he answered it truthfully. I wont begrudge him for it. Maybe he should have skipped the answer, but after seeing the act here in SD, I am soooo rooting for the Colts. (Never thought I would do that) These clowns here acted as if they won a SB, not won a division with 8 effing wins.

I heard about the more I thought. Well his season was over and was asked a question and he answered it. I applaud him. He said what I think. My opnion is I like Jay being Jay, and not some drone who wont say what he feels. Look if this guy will say he has a stronger arm than Elway, what makes anyone anywhere think he wont say what he thinks when ASKED. Plus the last I checked he wasnt on the other side of the ball that allowed 7 td’s in 10 possesions. (1 punt, 1 fg, and 1 end of half)

Totally agree, especially as to New England. Broncos had a lot of RB injuries, and that certainly affected things, but the Pats had as many injuries on defense and just kept coming. It’s gotta be the coaching, when you’re bringing in old guys like Seau and Colvin.

Well we have all vented our feelings about Jay
and I don’t agree he should be flapping his lips in frustration after the total beating they took last night but I do understand the frustration. Hopefully he will grow up and just lead this team and lead by example. Hell he has had a lot piled on him, don’t know of any team that could win without a defense. So suck it up and take one more for the team and the fans and show some class. When you get puked on as bad as you did last night there isn’t enough fingers to go around to point at all the holes and mistakes of that game.
I do agree with him on this defense not having the ability to stop my great grand mother from getting constant 20 yard gains in her wheelchair but that is the defense we had to work with.
NOW lets change it, rebuild the rebuilding. LOTs of work to do so shut up, stop whinning, at move on. So you got your butt kicked but good, so you got embarrassed on national tv, so you as a team played like a pee wee team without the heart and fun of the game….move on, it shouldn’t surprise you. Did you really think you were going to the SB?
We have the makings of a good team and self destructing with frustration is not going to help at all…… Be a leader and learn from this, it is only your second year, man up, grow up and start over again.
And hopefully this franchise will pull their head out and give us a defense to once again be proud of……Go Bronco’s 2009……. Happy New Year all……..

Folks, don't forget what job the media fulfills...
It is the media’s JOB to ask these questions about rivalries and Jay and Philip and the Broncos and Chargers. Their job. The players have to either answer or say “no comment.” There is a way to do so with class and respect, and also a way to do so while pretty much saying nothing. Cutler is only 25, so he will learn these things as he goes along. But please, please don’t blame the media for asking the questions. That is just a silly excuse.
