Shanahan Out

National Football Post is reporting that Shanahan has been fired. I don't really know what to add to get to the 75 word minimum except to say that I'm more than a little shocked. I've been following this team since the days of Mickey Slaughter, John McCormick (sp?), etc. and this has to rank right up there with signing Elway . . . if true. Anyone care to speculate on just who might be candidates - I don't think Cowher is an option.

I haven’t seen anything yet… If this isn’t smoke, then this is a huge story. It reminds me of when they fired Dan Reeves. I was shocked when that happened as well…

I wish Woody Paige was our coach!

Mike Lombardi writes for these guys, and he has Denver insiders

looks like this could be true

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2008/12/breaking-news-shanahan-out-in-denver/

The National Football Post has just been informed that Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan and his coaching staff have been fired. More on this story as it develops.

Cowher's salary demand just skyrocketed!

Not saying he’s our guy, but the market for him just got bigger. I wonder if Bowlen felt he had to pull the trigger now while his team was still relatively young and bring in someone who could put their stamp on this team. I just hope this was a calculated decision and not an emotional knee-jerk reaction to losing on Sunday.

I am shocked

Just completely shocked. I don’t know how you fire a guy when there aren’t clearly better options out there.

Looks like the Broncos know how to give MHR something to talk about after the season ended

Coaching Candidates

Time to start speculating! Could it be Kyle Shanahan? Just kidding (sort of). I wonder if anyone has checked to see if Shanny is simply moving up to a front office position ala Bill Parcells…

Not shocked...

If any of you lived through the Dan Reeves firing, this doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. Bowlen, if memory serves, fired Reeves after he took the Broncos to the Conference Championship and lost. I think Bowlen is trying to cut his losses now and take a chance on moving the organization in another direction.

I don't see Cowher as the answer

again, this was a Bowlen decision. He’s not some rook owner looking to make “headlines” for the sake of making headlines. He wants a leader to run this team and take advantage of our number 1 asset, Jay Cutler. Again, I see so many parallels to the Dan Reeves firing it’s not even funny. If that’s the case, then Wade Phillips is coming home (just kidding). :)

As shocked as I am, there is no way that Bowlen made this move without knowing which direction he is going after this.

Like others had said before, who do we get that is better? Bowlen must have the answer since he cut Shanny loose.

Statement from Pat Bowlen
Denver Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen today relieved Mike Shanahan from his position as Executive Vice President of Football Operations/Head Coach of the National Football League team, effective immediately.

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen issued the following statement: "After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos. This is certainly a difficult decision, but one that I feel must be made and which will ultimately be in the best interests of all concerned."

Bowlen added, "I appreciate the 21 years that Mike Shanahan has given to the organization as an assistant and head coach, and the two Super Bowl wins in that time. His contributions hold a special place in Broncos history."

Pat Bowlen will hold a press conference at the Denver Broncos’ headquarters on Wednesday at 11 a.m., and Mike Shanahan will meet the press shortly thereafter.

bowlen is a real owner with a real sense for timing...

I really think this has to do with capitalizing off of Cutler window as a rising star. I think he regrets the “lost years” Elway suffered under Reeves. Not that Cutler’s numbers aren’t great under Shanny, but our offense hasn’t been the same for quite some time.

Coaches

Mike Heimerdinger would provide some offensive continuity. Personally, I like Kubiak, but I’d like to see some real power football in Denver. But that kind of change would really set us back. We need an offensive head coach or will will lose the entire base of our program. Sen Payton might be ready to leave NO. Jason Garrett is hot but Jones won’t let him leave and will probably make him the head coach this off-season. Please no College coaches!!!

When you mentioned

college coaches, I immediately thought of Mike Leach from Texas Tech. Everyone has been wondering whether his all-out aerial attack would work in the NFL. Jay Cutler is just the guy to try it. I just HATE the idea. I hope it’s not Leach. I want running game and D to set up the throws. I don’t like Bates’ decision to go to the air for the rest of the game when one running play doesn’t work. What do I know? It may have been Shanny making the play calls the whole time.

I am nervous. I dislike inconsistency. But, I guess something has to change when you are consistently NOT winning.

This was sure ballsy of Bowlen.

Just a theory

I’m going to wildly speculate and guess that Bowlen insisted on bringing in some high level defensive coordinator/consultant or something similar to bring as much passion, and more importantly, judge of defensive football talent as Mike brings to the offensive side of things – and Mike refused. I think the time and Mike’s lack of balance with respect to the defense and especially special teams (always an afterthought IMHO) were his downfall.

It's "just" football

Broncos without Shanahan? I’m stunned. I’m shocked. Bowlen better have someone already lined up and a real plan in place.

That being said, I can understand the move…it makes sense and I think the problem is that Shanny had too much control and no backing down from his control over the defensive side of things.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

One playoff win in ten years.
Defense that has gotten worse the past five years.
No playoffs in three years.
Continued collpases by the team
Nothing against Shanahan, but this team has long ago tuned him and the coaching staff out.

I mean...

this decision indicates that Bowlen couldn’t look at the big Bronocs picture as think that they were clearly heading in the right direction. They completely rebuilt the offense and are set for years and only need to rebuild a defense to middle of the pack in a 2-3 year period before we are legit SB contenders. I think this move could set us back indefinitely.

I am afraid you are right.

However, change can be good. It depends on a lot of things. But I know Shanahan has run a consistent team for the most part, and this is one of the most well-run teams in the NFL. I just hope Bowlen knows what he’s doing.

I was VERY upset when I first heard, but the thought of getting better is exciting. But the fear of getting worse or treading water for a decade scares the hell out of me.

It really depends what your looking for as a coach...

But you would have to ay the Jet’s and Denver would be on top of the current openings. From there is just depends on the coach, personality and what’s most important to them…in short there are very obvious differences in those two jobs.

If this (whatever it is) works, I’ll give a lot of credit to Bowlen for having incredible timing. I would be inclined to give Shanahan many more chances since he is the only coach in franchise history to be able to bring Lombardi trophies to Denver. But to give him enough time and loyalty, but not too much, to change and adjust requires some skills.

oops...let me try again.

We haven’t “managed to move on” as evidenced by the sheer number of Elway jersies at a game…much more than Cutler or any other player.

I don't own any jerseys, just team shirts

I guess there will be Shanahan jerseys now.

moved on doesn't mean forgotten...

but when was the last time MHR’s were wishing elway was still around? We’ve moved on in that we think our team can compete now without elway, TD, etc… We have new faces to root for and support is all I’m saying.

Last time I checked it was the "Denver" Broncos not the Shanahan or Elway Broncos

How many times have you heard the phrase “Mike Shanahan’s Denver Broncos”?

sorry pal...

coaches and players are what make the team and give it an identity. You didn’t start liking the broncos because you were really into horses, there was somebody sometime you identified with and made you a fan.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

Elway did that for me...

but now I’m loyal to the team, good or bad.

I realize that but I guess what I mean is there are probably people...

you identified your time with and struggled to see go and there are those that teams don’t recover from. No one person does make a team but having a 14 year coach is a pretty rare and special thing in the NFL.

seem to have the same thing going as Shanahan – were great in their prime, but haven;t been able to get it done since.

Cool

Then he can come be GM or something of that nature…but no as a coach

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

talent evaluator is one thing, but has he been tracking college/NFL players recently?

no. and because of that, we’d have to suffer while he got back up to speed. Remember, he had all that insight when he coached the cowgirls because he was a coach at Miami

Cowher wants 'complete control' of an organization.

…and Bowlen may be very willing to give him that.

That's an interesting dilemma for Bowlen...

being that is the very reason he may have had to make this current move.

Just speculating here...

but as I said before I wonder if Bowlen presented Shanahan with the option of giving up some control and he wasn’t willing to do it. That said you wonder if Bowlen, as many owners do, might be gun shy at giving a guy full control again.

Can we please

look at someone for whom the HC job is a PROMOTION, not anyone who has been FIRED previously for lack of results.

No, he was fired for the past three years.

I am less inclined

to think this was over the San Diego game. I think this is about the KC loss, the Raiders loss, and the Buffalo loss. The 3 game lead we gave up, the losing record last year, and the decision to go for offensive draft after an abysmal defensive showing in 2007 may have more to do with it than one game.

Would Shanahan still have a job with the Broncos next season if they had won in SD?

by PosterNutbag on Dec 30, 2008 5:10 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Who knows

I would say probably. But that would have meant a return to the playoffs, not blowing a 3 game division lead with 3 games to go. It was one game, with MANY more implications.

by HarvJNep2n on Dec 30, 2008 5:12 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

sure the implication were greater...

But the bottom line is he was ultimately fired for losing one game when he would still have a job had he won.

If it was just one game,

he could have been fired after the Oakland game, or the Detroit game last year, or the San Francisco game at the end of the 2006 season.

Take A Deep Breath...

We are all goin to miss shanny. Personally, as a broncos fan I cannot wait to see where Pat Bowlen is going to go with this, fellas pat bowlen is probably one of the best owners in the bussiness and the BRONCOS are a first class orginization. We have a young, talented offense and if we can put up numbers in the 20’s and 30’s on the bored and have a good defense this team will be great for a long time to come. Im excited. Pat Bowlen probably already has a guy he’s talking to and I am positive it is probably someone that we are not expecting. He said in his statement that it took a little of time and thinking. Where’s the passion? The Definiton of Broncos Football is not giving up 52 points in a football game and expect your offense to put up 56. All I can say is WATCH OUT. With a new, inspired football coach this team could be great for years to come.

We will miss you Shanny!

I would like

to be the first on record to demand that Coach ____(insert next coach’s name here)____ be fired immediately. The guy hasn’t won a SINGLE game since he’s been in Denver. He has drafted absolutely NO talent, hasn’t made ANY good play calls, and he hasn’t been able to develop or keep a single good player on either side of the ball. He needs to be fired NOW, before he’s hired.

LOL
