Mike Shanahan Dismissed As Head Coach of the Broncos

First, Thanks to Ted for getting this up while I was spending some quality time with my daughters.  Secondly, MHR Radio will be LIVE tonight at 9PM est / 7PM mst to talk about this.  BE THERE! -- TSG

In a move which has sent shockwaves throughout the NFL, the Broncos have dismissed Mike Shanahan as Head Coach after 14 years and 2 Super Bowl wins.  Owner Pat Bowlen's statement follows.

After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos. This is certainly a difficult decision, but one that I feel must be made and which will ultimately be in the best interests of all concerned.  I appreciate the 21 years that Mike Shanahan has given to the organization as an assistant and head coach, and the two Super Bowl wins in that time.  His contributions hold a special place in Broncos history.

I'm sure everybody is as shocked as I am, and also needs to collect their thoughts.  Guru will have thoughts later, and I am sure everybody will have a lot to say after some time for reflection.

KOA is talking about a possible door being open for Elway to return to the organization

God I hope not. He’s got “Michael Jordan” kiss of death written all over him.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

I’m curious to see your opinion on this…you posted recently about how we need stability. The whole rug just got yanked out from underneath this team. Are you excited? Dissapointed?

Maybe

He was asked to step down as VP of football operations and stay as HEAD COACH…And then Shanny said no, it’s either all or nothing, and Bowlen said OK then you have to go????

My guess is this was semi-mutual. That Bowlen asked Shanny if he still has the fire or would he rather be bought out of his contract. Maybe talk about relinquishing some responsibility.

Initial reaction

I am shocked by this transgression, only because I never, in my wildest dreams thought Bowlen would fire Shannahan. I do have to say though, I am reinvigorated with excitement by this move. The Broncos have fallen into a trap of mediocrity not seen by this organization in quite some time. It seems as if Shannahan is losing his edge and has become stale to the players. Sometimes all you need is new blood to get things kick-started again. You also have to realistically sit down and look at what we are losing here. Lets face it, the Broncos have been a very, very ordinary team since 1998. We have had 1 single playoff win and now 3 straight seasons of missing the playoffs. Top that off with Shannahan’s lackluster personnel moves and his teams consistently fading and getting worse as the season wears on and I am not too sure we are not going to be in better hands as of now with someone else. People talk about us being such a great team, but, like I said, we really haven’t been. Just look at the facts.

Who is any better?

Welcome to the coaching carousel everyone where we get a new head coach every two years. This totally sucks. Goodbye to our 3rd year of a 5 year plan. Can you say starting over?

I guess I should wait to see what happens, but I think this is a very very bad move by Bowlen. I’m extremely disappointed.

I wish Shanny luck in whatever avenue his new road leads him. I think dark days are ahead for the Broncos, unless they get Cowher (who has expressed interest in the Jets, but because his daughters work and live in the area). I fear he won’t be coming to Denver.

by CalgaryFan on Dec 30, 2008 4:27 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

There is appeal here for Cowher.

He wants total control of personell decisions. Bowlen can give him the power and the money. You know you’ll have job security in Denver that’s for sure.

makes perfect sense

knowledgeable football people have said for a while that, while Shanny was a great coach, he’s been a so-so GM. My guess is Bowlen finally decided this was true. Being a decisive, successful businessman there was no reason to take half measure.

now I look for him to bring in a GM and have the GM build a coaching staff. That or he brings in seperate GM and head coach himself.

Torn In Two.

Can’t say I’m upset, let alone angered, by the move. That said, I’m certainly not thrilled. It’ll all depend on who we bring in (see: replacing Shotty with Norv in SD or Wade replacing Parcells in Dallas) but I’m oddly excited by the move. Honestly, I’m most disappointed by the fact that he didn’t resign (I’m almost sure he was asked to) and that he’ll likely land somewhere else in the AFC. I wish him all the best and hope Bowlen knows what he’s doing…

Bad move Bowlen

I understand the desire for the change after the dismal performance of the defense overall and the collapse of the team down the stretch. But the Guru was right in calling for stability. I don’t want an offensive minded coach coming in with a new system. I would be fine with Jeremy Bates continuing to run the offense. If we bring in a defensive coach that means a new system and probably getting rid of Slowick. This would be the 5th defensive system in almost as many yerars. Maybe it’ll work, but I doubt it for 2009.

But since the move is made, I don’t think it will be Cowher who replaces him. As I said, I would prefer a defensive minded coach so maybe Steve Spagnulo from the Giants or Jim Johnson of the Eagles.

by MattR on Dec 30, 2008 4:37 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

+1 Johnson

I think Johnson would be a good choice, although he is a little long in the tooth (which IMHO is the only reason he’s available). He comes from a West Coast offensive team and presumably would stick with the Shanahan offense. He’s a 4-3 guy and his attacking defensive style would make better use of Bly and Baily. I think he could also use Dumerville and Moss more effectively. He totally turned around the Eagle’s defense in 1999 and has kept them there since.

Someone please explain to me

Why is this such a bad move? What greatness are we missing here? Does anyone really think the Broncos have been a great football team the last 10 years? They have pretty much defined mediocrity. I haven’t been drinking the Shannahan kool-aid for a while now. I just don’t see it anymore.

by RyanBuff on Dec 30, 2008 4:40 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

They went to the AFC championship three years ago.

Half the teams in the league haven’t been to the playoffs in the past five years. This is Miami’s first trip since 2001.

Look for Pioli (GM-Pats) and Spagnulo (D Coordinator NYG) to pop up a lot.

I know I'm talking to a dead conversation, but

Super7 hit the nail on the head. When you have an offense with this much talent, that is being called by the OC, whats the point of keeping an offensive mastermind who would rather be a GM?

This is coming from a longtime Shanny defender, but there comes a point where if you are loosing against your division, you have to fire the coach to bring something new to the 6 division games a year. We were never going to go anywhere with the way we played against the AFC West this year.

Yeah

In my mind, it’s completely out of respect that I refuse to talk about potential replacements until after his press conference. This man brought this franchise not only its greatest glory, but out of the woods and into a national spotlight that no other Denver franchise has ever achieved. Because of him, Denver was no longer thought of as a cow town in a “Where’s that?” state.

Personally, I’m completely heart-broken as I have loved no other Bronco more than Mike Shanahan. He is my guy until the end, and I hope like hell he goes to the NFC and we never have to face him.

I appreciate all of the hard work and dedication he brought the organization as his level of loyalty is extremely rare and he will forever be a Denver Bronco in my mind.

I’m honestly saddened to see so many people here ready to move on so quickly from a man who has brought us so much.

if you won’t take at least the rest of the day to mourn the loss, but I will. I seriously feel like a very close friend of mine has just died. Shanahan helped usher in my love of the Broncos when I was pretty young, and if I could have a Shanahan jersey, I would buy it immediately. Life as a Broncos fan without Shanahan already hurts. To all you that keep saying Cowher or Kubiak...

And by talking about a replacement, we aren’t disgracing him or anything were just trying to dance around our own shock.

All I can say is WOW WOW WOW!!!

I do not think any of us saw this coming. I think that Bowlen sat down with shanny and said " I want you as my HC but not as the GM" And Shanny said no thanks. Now I do not like this move because I do not think there is anyone else out there that is on the same level as Shanny( coach wise). This just shocks me.

Now moving forward. I guarantee you Bowlen brings in a GM first and then allows the GM to build a coaching staff just like Parcells did in Miami. I look at Scott Pioli from the Pats as a possiblity. That is the way to build a football team/organization. Bowlin will not bring in a head coach first and then the GM it will go the other way around.

I STILL CAN NOT BELIEVE THIS I AM IN TOTAL SHOCK

We are doomed - 2 and 14 next year

We can say good bye to having a different running back going over 1000 yards every year. Instead of playing to go to the play offs in the last game of every season, we can compete with Detroit for 1 round draft picks.
This was the worst move in Bronco history. I am sure that Shanahan will be back in the playoffs in the next 2 years. And he will be the hottest coach available this off season. I bet the Cowboys take a look at weather they really want Wade Phillips and not Shanahan.
Bowlen is a fool!!!

Tatum Bell in 2006 made 1000 in 2006

And Selvin Young went for 729 last year with 231 recieving yards. I am sure the running backs where every Shanahan ends up will end up going over 1000.

This year was a fluke because of the injurys – I am sure Pitman would have broke 1000 if he started 16 games, and Hillis was amazing.

Bobby Turner didn't get fired

& I think injuries had more to do with the RB slump we’ve gone through than Shanny. I am hoping to see a stronger Offense next year when we can throw and RUN, Shanny or no Shanny.

We could have used another WR this year

Especially after all the RB’s got injured. Stokely is just too fragile to play the number of snaps we needed.

Just think how screwed this team would have been if Royal was Stokely’s backup and Darell Jackson or Keary Colbert were the starter opposite Marshall.

Big name defensive draft picks have been some of the least productive players the Broncos have had during recent years. You have to go back all the way to DJ Williams to find a high defensive pick that has worked out for us.

This is worse than Sunday night...

I am in stunned disbelief. No matter what’s happened the last few seasons, I figured Shanny would be coaching the Broncos for the next 15 years. Yes, I’m sure it came down to Bowlen giving him the ultimatum of installing a GM or an independent DC. If that’s the case, I am sad that Shanahan’s ego kept him from agreeing. Aside from John Elway, Mike Shanahan IS the Denver Broncos. I just hope Bowlen isn’t making a rash decision, and that it was brewing for quite some time. These are not the sort of choices to make on emotion.

I will be forever grateful for Mike Shanahan and what he brought to the Broncos and us, the fans. He gave us hope every single year and two brilliant championships that we will never forget. Granted, it hasn’t gone that well the last few…but as we’ve all been saying, this is a rebuilding process. It’s time to build a defense.

by Nitz on Dec 30, 2008 5:21 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

WOW

I really thought Bowlen would give him one more year. I told someone just this morning, if we’re at the same place or worse one year from now I could see Bowlen pulling the trigger.

Then again, the Broncos have most of the pieces of a truly explosive offense already in place. They have nine draft picks. They have a few players they can probably trade for more. They have plenty of cap room. They have a very challenging schedule next year. They HAVE to make a big splash this off season on defense in the draft and free agency to have a chance and one has to assume Bowlen looked at history and felt Shanahan’s philosophy in that regard simply wasn’t going to change.

I am sure we’ll hear more from Bowlen and Shanahan in the coming days, but whether this turns out to be the right move of course depends on who REPLACES Shanahan.

I agree

Would be a good fit for the team, but I don’t think it is enough to entice Cowher back. And I can’t see Bowlen shelling out the $$ to get him in addition to the money still owed Shanahan (unlike the Raiders, Denver will pay him what he is due)

At this point I am “rooting” for a defensive minded coach with no NFL head coaching experience (I do not want a retread like Denny Green)

Denver has to be the most interesting GM and HC opening out there. We have a better team together then any of the the other teams that fired their coachs and GM’s

That said...

Shanahan will have a job next year somewhere, if he chooses to. Hell, theoretically he could have another job in half an hour – but we’ll probably have to wait until after the season is over to know for sure where the chips will land.

I know I won’t be the first but I definitely want to thank him for all he’s done for the Broncos, the city of Denver, the fans here and wish him the best on whatever he chooses to do next.

Whether you agree with tis decision or not you have to admit, these are huge shoes to fill and a lot to live up to. Big challenge up ahead and they’re going to have to work hard to pick the right people to meet it.

Thanks Mike Shanahan and good luck wherever you go, and in whatever you do!

I am torn

I think Bowlen gave him an ultimatum. Bowlen wanted him to be the Head coach and only the head coach. Bowlen wanted to bring in a GM that would handle the draft and other things and let Shanny get back to what he does best. I really think he was only fired because he wanted to keep complete control of the orginazation and Pat was not having it

I agree

Very sad but this is probably the best time to do this if you’re going to. I’d rather bring in a fresh approach now when we have a team that is partially in place than the situation Tom Landry was in in 1989. As a former Cowboys fan, as much as I loved Landry he was about four or five years past needing to walk away and the team Jimmy Johnson inherited needed rebuilding from the ground up.

At least Denver has the offensive side of the ball largely in place. We just need a complete shift in defensive approach and personnel and we probably weren’t going to get that next year. As sad as I am to see Shanahan go, this is a team that under the right leadership can win NOW.

The question is, will they find the right leadership? If they don’t, then yes this becomes a dumb decision. But it’s a little early to be trying to pass a verdict. I think we should all be patient. For better of for worse this is a done deal. I think we should continue to be supportive of the team and let things play out, and see where things fall.

Hey, many of us are shocked and terrified. But there is hope!

To bear up under loss, to fight the bitterness of defeat and the weakness of grief, to be victor over anger, to smile when tears are close, to resist evil men and base instincts, to hate evil and to love love, to go on when it would seem good to die, to seek after the glory and the dream, to look up with unquenchable faith in something evermore about to be, that is what any man can do, and so be great.

Fairly unemotional about Mike Shanahan's fate

I find myself fairly unemotional about Mike Shanahan’s fate.

The Broncos have been in a sad need of a slap in the face. Mike seems to have lost the motivational edge for this team. That’s not to say we need a rah-rah guy, as coach, but rather the Denver Broncos have been sorely in need of change, for more than a few years. And, gripe all we may, the time for change has occurred.

I didn’t really care that the Broncos lost on Sunday. But it was the way they did it: an NFL classic belly flop record. I fully expected this year’s team to lose Sunday, but the way they performed HURT MY FEELINGS. It’s no fun to be humiliated.

As a guy whose family was going to the Bronco games when they were playing at Denver University’s field, I owe Mike Shanahan BIG TIME for the most joyous day of my life. When John Mobley knocked down Bret Farve’s pass, our house erupted in joy.

THANK YOU, MR. SHANAHAN… you truly did great things for Denver.

I hope that the Broncos find a way to retain RB Coach Bobby Turner. It makes sense that he is an expert evaluator of running backs. We might have a dominant back on our roster already, in Peyton Hillis.

Shanahan did, IMO, have a bad habit of taking a chance on players, who have a past injury history. It would be an interesting research project to find out which of the seven RBs we have on IR, missed major time in college, due to injury. Hillis’ injury looked to me like a very freak accident, and I am hoping, he didn’t have injury problems in college.

Making a coaching change — now — is a signal to all the players, that there won’t been a huge degree of sentimentality involved, in you retaining your job. It is all salary and performance, and the defensive philosophy of the new HC.

Anybody know what kind of a personal relationship Pat Bowlen and Scott Pioli have?

Touchdowns win championships? Seriously, get a freakin defense!

Keep Hope Alive!

Come on guys, we’re all shocked. But look at Atlanta, Miami and Baltimore. Would anyone have guesseed on those head coaching picks? And look how far those teams had to go!

Denver needs a lot of help on defense but we have an explosive offense mostly in place! Great things can happen in a year – and this is not a team that finished 1-15 or 4-12.

It all depends on who they pick but there IS hope.

Cutler's comments:
I’m disappointed, I’m shocked, I’m not happy about it, I’m not pleased with it at all. We had zero inkling this was going to happen. I didn’t have a clue.

I hope Jay doesn’t lose faith in the organization…

Oh that's bad... That's real bad.... We should have let him "step down" it would have lessened the blow...

He's not really stepping down, more like a Mike D'antoni thing...

That is my worry

In addition to drawing in potential free agents, we have quite a few key offensive players (and Elvis) whose contracts are up after 2009 or 2010 who might not be as interested in resigning. (Obviously a lot depends on the new coach, but it is a worry)

I'm not too worried about this

Cutler always says the first thing that pops into his mind. Of course he’s shocked and angry. Give him and the team a chance to find out where the organization is going. If the direction is good, they’ll get on board.

I have a feeling that if the new leadership crafts a defense that keeps the opposition scoring down, Cutler will be signing a different tune. The Broncos are known as a first class organization, and as long as the replacement coach isn’t a complete joke, players will still want to come here.
