Brad's NFL Picks - Week Fourteen - 2008

Star-divide

Brad's Picks was 10-6 last week, right when the T's trounced Detroit 47-10 on T Day; and when Dallas trounced the Seahawks 34-9, also on T Day; and when Philly trounced the Cardinals 48-20 on T Night. And when the Broncos trounced the New York Jets in a freezing rain 34-17; when the Dolphins squeaked out a win at St. Louis 16-12; when the Giants handled Washington 23-7; when the Ravens trounced Cincinnati 34-3; when Tampa edged the Saints 23-20; when Minnesota beat the Bears 34-14 on SNF; and when Houston beat the Jags 30-17 on MNF.

Brad's Picks was not right when the Panthers won a shootout in the cold at Lambeau 35-31; when the Niners became the first west coast team to win a game on the east coast this year, beating Buffalo 10-3; when the Colts got 7 off a fumble return by DE Robert Mathis to pull out a 10-6 win over Cleveland; when the Falcons flew across the continent and beat the Chargers 22-16; when the Chiefs beat Oakland 20-13; and when the Steelers upended New England 33-10.

Brad's Picks is 121-70-1 on the season.

Home teams were just 5-11 for the second week in a row. On the season, home teams are 105-86-1, which is just a 54.9% win rate for the home team. Last year, the home team won 54.7% of the time.

There were three coast to coast games last week, and finally a west coast team won in the east, as the Niners surprised Buffalo. But the Cardinals lost in Philly, while the Falcons won at San Diego. So, coast to coast visitors were 2-1 last week, and are 10-20 on the season.

George was 7-9 last week, and is 89-100-1 on the season (47%).

NFC 2, AFC 2 last week. 23-20 NFC on the season.

Teams off a MNF game were 0-2 last week as both Green Bay and New Orleans lost. On the season, teams off a MNF game are 17-8.

    this week: the Thursday game:

Oakland (3-9) at San Diego (4-8) - Division game. Who'da thunk, last August, that come December, the Chargers would be just one game better than the Raiders? Anyway, the AFC West has been kind of screwy this year - Raiders got blown out at home by the Broncos, then returned the favor at Mile High, then lost at home to the Chiefs. Chargers have lost three in a row, by one at Pittsburgh, by three to the Colts, and by six to the Falcons. This is another game on nflhognetwork.com, so not many will be able to see it, which is too bad, because I bet it will be a good game, as division games usually are. I'll take the Chargers, but putting no money on it. George likes the Raiders.

    the 11:00 MST Sunday games:

Minnesota (7-5) at Detroit (0-12) - Division game. Vikings have lost both starting defensive tackles, Pat Williams and Kevin Williams, for the next four games, due to a league imposed suspension for use of a banned substance. The substance is found in an over the counter diuretic called Star Caps. The Williams boys and four others are crying foul because it is over the counter, etc., but the league says they were all warned about the substance, and it's up to them to know what they are putting into their bodies. Most importantly, this substance can mask the use of steroids. Anyway, the Vikings have decent backups at the position, and they should be enough to prevail over the pathetic Lions. And, this just in, it looks like the Williams guys have obtained a temporary stay of the suspension from a friendly judge, but it remains unclear whether they will play this week. George likes the Lions.

Cleveland (4-8) at Tennessee (11-1) - The Browns lost another QB for the season, as Derek Anderson was placed on IR with a torn MCL. Ken Dorsey will start. He was a 7th round pick by the Niners out of Miami in 2003, but he's been a back up with the Browns since 2005. The emergency QB will be return specialist Joshua Cribbs, who played QB at Kent State. Browns played tough against the Colts last week, and woulda won if not for the fumble return for 7 by Mathis. Still, even if they had Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson at QB, you'd pick the Titans at home. George likes the Titans at home.

Houston (5-7) at Green Bay (5-7) - Texans drubbed divisional foe Jacksonville on MNF, while Green Bay lost in a shootout in the cold to the Panthers. Weather should be decent at Lambeau (20 degrees or so, not much in the way of snow). Houston rookie RB Steve Slaton had a monster game against the Jags - 130 on 21 - while the Texans held the Jags to 116 on 21. Anyway, Packers played a good game at home last week against the 9-3 Panthers, and you gotta figure the Packers will not lose twice in a row to a south team, although their run D is pathetic. Plus, the Texans lost their long snapper to the Star Caps thing. George likes the Packers too.

Atlanta (8-4) at New Orleans (6-6) - Division game. Saints lost RB Deuce McAllister and DL's Charles Grant and Will Smith to the Star Caps thing. Ordinarily, you gotta take the home team in the NFC South. But with the losses to the Star Caps thing, I'll take the Falcons with their great running game. George likes the Saints.

Jacksonville (4-8) at Chicago (6-6) - Both teams played on prime time last week (Jags on MNF, Bears on SNF) and both got whupped good. Weather should be around 20 degrees and partly cloudy. Bears still have a shot at the playoffs, and are at home. I think the Jags have kind of given up. Take the Bears. George likes the Jags.

Philadelphia (6-5-1) at New York Giants (11-1) - Division game. Donovan McNabb responded to his benching the previous week with a great game as Philadelphia beat the Cards 48-20 on T Night. So that gives them a couple extra days to get ready. But the win was over the Cardinals, who have not played at all well on the east coast this year, while the Giants just keep winning, despite troubled but talented Plaxico Burress' problems. Last week Plaxico went to a bar, taking a handgun, with which he managed to shoot himself in the thigh. Giants have put him on IR for the year, but they seem to have plenty of receivers, including young Domenik Hixon, who the Broncos foolishly let go a year ago. Anyway, I'm taking the Giants until someone really beats them. George likes the Eagles.

Cincinnati (1-10-1) at Indeepus (8-4) - Colts had a slow start, as both Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison worked their way back from injuries. Colts don't have a great run D, but the Bengals aren't at all good. Take the Colts at their home Lube. George likes the Bengals.

    the 2:05 MST games:

Kansas City (2-10) at Denver (7-5) - Division game. Colorado got it's first snowstorm of the year on December 3-4, about six inches, but it should clear up in time for Sunday's game. Chiefs won at Arrowhead the first time around (Week Four or so) but the Broncos seem to have it going. They did lose to the Raiders at Mile High two weeks ago, but it seems clear (to me, at least) that they were looking ahead to the Jets game. I don't think they'll look past the Chiefs here, even though they have a big road game next week at Carolina. Broncos D has been stepping it up the last few weeks, even though a lot of starters have been out. Some of those starters (Champ Bailey, D.J. Williams) might be back. Even without them, the Broncos are not going to let the Chiefs sweep them. George likes the Broncos at Mile High.

Miami (7-5) at Buffalo (6-6) - Division game. This game is actually at Toronto, as the Bills look to expand their market. It will be played in a dome, so the Phins don't have to worry about cold weather. Bills QB Trent Edwards is looking iffy at best for the game with a sore groin, so look to J.P. Losman to get the start. Bills are like 1-5 lately, after a great start (they even managed to lose to the lowly Niners at home last week), while the Dolphins behind Chad Pennington and Ronnie Brown have been pretty solid. George likes the Dolphins also.

New York Jets (8-4) at San Francisco (4-8) - Jets lost at home in a cold hard rain to the Broncos last week, while the Niners won a 10-3 game at Buffalo. Weather should be pretty nice in the Bay area, and the Jets will appreciate that. George likes the Jets also.

New England  ((7-5) at Seattle (2-10) -   Patriots begin their second two-in-a-row series on the west coast.  They went 1-1 last time, staying out west in between games.  I don't know what they plan this time, but I bet they beat the lowly Seahawks in game one.  Seahawks are already talking about next year, including the possibility of releasing QB Matt Hasselbeck, a really dumb idea.Take the Patriots.  George likes the Patriots also.

     the 2:15 MST games:

Dallas (8-4) at Pittsburgh (9-3) - Steelers' D rocks! They just beat up on the Patriots in New England last week. Cowboys got to trounce the Seahawks on T Day so they have a few extra days to get ready. Weather should be cold and windy, maybe a little snow. I'm taking the Steelers at home. George likes the Steelers.

St. Louis (2-10) at Arizona (7-5) - Division game. Arizona had another east coast game (t's called a loss) last week, but the good news is they had a couple extra days to get ready for the hapless Rams. Take the Cardinals at home. George likes the Rams.

    the SNF game:

Washington (7-5) at Baltimore (8-4) - Reds QB Jason Campbell had no INT's in the teams' 6-2 start, but has thrown 4 (vs. just two TD's) in the last four games, a 1-3 stretch. Coach Zorn denies even thinking about making a switch to old veteran Todd Collins, who was so good in the stretch last year when Campbell got injured. But maybe a quick hook if Campbell falters? Ravens rookie QB Joe Flacco has been so good this year, especially recently, that he's getting talk about rookie of the year. Probaly won't get the ROY thing, but he does make the Ravens' O work, helped by a very good rush game. And the Ravens D is a close second to the Steelers's D in the AFC. Take the Ravens at home. George likes the Ravens also.

    the MNF game:

Tampa Bay (9-3) at Carolina (9-3) - Division game. Should be a great game - their records say it all. In the NFC South, the home team almost always wins, and I've already taken the Falcons to win at New Orleans, so gotta go with Carolina here. George likes the Bucs.

hmmm...the only two I have different from you are penciled in as I have not made my picks 100% yet.

I have Tampa Bay and New Orleans. I have a feeling one of the two NFC South match ups will have a home team that loses….but which one?!? lol

I also have the Jets penciled in. The 49ers have been playing tough football lately and might just upset the Favres’. I will make a final decision tomorrow. ;)

Ok, I changed some of my picks...I did go with Atlanta. I am hedging my bets that a road team will win in the AFC South this week. lol

No, good eye.

Sorry. I’ll try to correct it. In short, take the Patriots.

This is off topic but the curiosity is killing me. What does it mean to “rec’d” a post? Am I saying that right? Someone help me out please.

Brad............I love your post each week..........but I need to ask..........

Is ‘George’ the same ‘George’ each week—or do you spend him and get a different ‘George’ if he beats you on a given week? This is critical if you want to make yourself look better than ‘George’ each week.

The best defense is a good defense!
And last week's young players. Yes!

Same George

Same old George each week. He spends his off days in an envelope next to the computer so he can “lurk” on the MHR site and learn what he can. Besides, he’s never beaten me – even on my worst week (12) when I was 7-9, George just tied me. But at 47 %, George is just about where you’d expect him to be.

Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down the stream
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.
