The Chiefs are using the Pistol formation to increase Thigpen's efficiency. Developed by Chris Ault of the Nevada Wolfpack, the Pistol is a mini-shotgun in which the quarterback stands about three yards behind center, waiting for the snap, while the tailback stands another three yards directly behind him (Fig. 1 shows a typical example of the formation the Chiefs use, with the addition of rookie fullback Mike Cox in an H-back look). It's a nice hybrid of the spread offense that most young quarterbacks find easier to run, and the power-running success that the NFL requires. Tight end Tony Gonzalez has been the main man in the Kansas City Pistol, finding open zones against defenses that are playing the Chiefs honest.

Tony Gonzalez
has been on fire in this system, 33 catches and four touchdowns since they started running it. Keep your eyes peeled…

I'm not worried...we have Nate Webster starting.

My arch nemesis in fantasy this week is starting him. Frankly that doesn’t bode well for me, methinks….

If Mike Shanahan were a hotdog, would you eat him? I know I would. Hell, I'd eat him twice.

I particularly liked reading about
how he has taken Thigpen under his wing. In and of itself it is pretty cool (especially the part about how he didn’t exactly give Thigpen a choice), but then to hear that other offensive players have wanted to be a part of the specialized film study…
It is no wonder you guys have gotten better, and frankly, if this is the way TG is going to finish up his career in KC, then I think it is LOTS better than whatever you could have gotten out of a trade. What he can “hand down” seems loads better than what someone would “hand over” for him….

plaxico would fit right in!(had to do it)
they’ve been ripping him here on the east coast, and i’m luvin’ it(shotgun, run-and-shoot,…). seriously, though, the te’s have been a problem for us all season, and te coverage doesn’t seem to be a strength of the backup lb’s. who gets to cover him, winborn? with any help? are we in a zone, with basically noone on him?

If the SAM can't cover the TE...
..most teams will put the SS on him. If the TE goes out, the SAM gets a good lane to blitz. If you keep the SS back a bit, you might give up some passes underneath, but the SAM might be in the lane to pick off (or even the LDE), and the QB might tire of the pressure on the stong side. If the SS is a heavy hitter, he can sit back on the lane and crack the TE pretty good every time.
I’m not too familiar with the pistol, but it looks like a pretty nifty set up.

I like how your running game has the potential to be well represented
with quick handoffs and such, while the QB gets the benefit of surveying the field, if not the deep pocket of the shotgun.
I think nifty is a good word for it! :)
