Here comes two big tests!
I didn't see the Carolina -Tampa game last night, but judging from the stats and the score, Carolina totally dominated. All year we have been singing the praises of Ryan Clady and Ryan Harris and with very good reason. They have been nothing short of spectacular! This coming Sunday our two star tackles will be going against a certain Mr. Julius Peppers. I'm not sure who will see more of him, Ryan or Ryan, but it will be a huge test for Ryan to pass. HT can hopefully shed some light on which Ryan will be facing Peppers the most and who is on the other side that could create some havoc.
For the past several weeks we have been singing the praises of our improved run defense and with good reason. It has definitely been getting better each week. You want to talk about a test? Oh baby, we got one Sunday in Carolina. They have a beast of an O-line and two fantastic Running Backs. I am hoping we don't come out of this game totally discouraged about our improved run defense.
The first test I am not so worried about. I truly believe the Ryans (and Co.) will take care of business as they have all year. Of course with Hillis out, I'm worried about our running game. But I've been worried about it all year and Shanny has somehow squeezed rushing yards out of running backs that, well let's be honest, most people would say "who is this f'n guy".
The second test is what I'm worried the most about. How in the world do we stop the beast that is the Carolina running game? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Hey man, good post
I watched the game last night and here is what stood out:
1. Tampa Bay was relying on its defense and has no offense. For the first time this year, their run defense was shredded by the run game.
2. Johnathon Stewart, Deangelo Hall and Jeff Otah are studs. Most yardage was taken from the right side behind Otah with help from Hooper (FB) or weer pitches and sweeps to the outside. Tampa has slow LB’s and they struggled to seal and contain the running backs.
3. Most of Tampa’s big plays came in the pass game. Carolina’s DB’s looked very suspect.
4. Peppers played well but was not domianant. he struggles with QB’s that have mobility. He was held in check for most of the night by rookie Jeremy Zuttah, and got sacks when he was switched and took advantage of a slower Jeremy Trublood.
5. Steve Smith gashed some big plays against Ronde Barber by simply out running him vertically. Damn, he can play!
In my opinion, we match up pretty well against Carolina. We have speed at LB that should help us seal and contain sweeps, tosses and pitches. We need to be aware when the line Otah and Hooper on the same side. They kick out and block well opening lanes easily. Play 8 in box on early downs, play a safety over the top against Smith, and match WW up on Muhsin. They have no other threats at TE or WR.
With the ball, set the run up with the pass. Take advantage of our TE’s over the middle. if our pass game humms, we match up REALLY well against there defense.
We need an early lead, force Delhomme to pass (2 picks last night) and pressure him.
We will need a running game, but I think we can get it done!

Thanks
I have to correct you. You said Deangelo Hall. We all know you meant Williams.
I should have included the Steve Smith factor. I have no clue how we defend against him.

"Tampa Bay was relying on its defense and has no offense."
Tampa Bay did get 298 yards in the air, plus 86 on the ground, and they did score 23 points.

Exactly
My point is they are not an offensive juggernaut and base their game around their ability to keep teams under 20 points. What is a high octane offense like ours going to against the Carolina defense???
Nice point Bradley, and I think we are on the same page!

Yes, I agree
Broncos O is much better than the Bucs, and should be able to do better than the Bucs did. It’s just that the Bucs did all right in Carolina.

Yep WIlliams...
Sorry about that.
Dont worry about Smith. We said the same thing about Braylon Edwards and Roddy White and Dre held them in check pretty well.
We just need to have safety help. I think having Barrett, with his speed and size over the top, would be the play. the kid runs a 4.38 whihc is SUPER quick.
I think we will be OK against Carolina.
They will NOT be overlooking us though……they need the win to contend for the number 1 seed. And we need the win to tie up the AFC West.
Should be a GREAT game!

Consider it the Third Big Test
Barrett covering the deep field. If Carolina wants they can use Smith to simply take two of our defensive players out of every play. We can’t let them do this. That means the offense needs to score every chance they get, and at least a few TDs.
But our defense… ugh. We are 25th in the league against the big play pass. Carolina is 5th in the league creating the big play pass. Horible, horrible, horrible matchup. The wildcard is Barrett. The team that is 25th int he league didn’t have Barrett at safety, so we will ahve to see. HUGE test for the kid. I am really glad we waited to bring him up and I think that this is the kind of trial by fire that will amke him a better player, win or lose.
Cutler better get his arm limber and his hamstrings stretched, because they are going to be trying to destroy him, and he is going to need to rack up the yards and the points…

"We are 25th in the league against the big play pass."
Ugh. That’s our lack of a pass rush. It seems that Doom, good as he is, almost always tries to beat his man to the outside. He needs to keep his man honest by trying to beat him to the inside more often. That’ll make it easier to turn the corner. If our line can get pressure it’ll make things way easier for the secondary. I’d love to see a few weakside LB blitzes. Woodyard would be good. Too many guys come in out-of-control and the QB sidesteps them. I’ve noticed Woodyard doesn’t overcommit or overrun plays the way some other people do. He stays balanced.

DOOM talked in a recent article
that his hand has finally stopped hurting. He was being forced to be 100% speed because he couldn’t get his hands inside and power into guys. He talked about how that is the total opposite of how he likes to play, which is to power into defenders early, in order to set up the speed rush. He mentioned that no matter how many times he successfully power rushed an opponent they still are always surprised.
I hope he can get hot going into the playoffs. Some pressure from the front four would bump this defense up a full notch I think….

I wasn't thinking power so much
as a cross-over move to the inside, so blockers couldn’t just cheat to their left in order to ride him past the pocket, but I suppose that, too, depends on using his hands. It’s good that he now has all his “weapons”. Pressure from the front four would bump up the defense at leasta full notch. I’d say we’d be better without Bailey with a strong pass rush than with Bailey without a strong rush.

I miss the WLB blitz
I expected hundreds of them this year with DJ on the WILL, but it hasn’t materialized. I simply can’t imagine the conditions under which Slowik will unleash his WILLs. I hope he loosens up or finds a way to do it though…

The Carolina running game demoralized the city of Tampa Bucs
2999 is completely right that the Panther’s secondary looked suspect. And I would expand that i though Tampa’s offensive ineffectiveness stemmed more from their own lack of focus than Carolina really smothering them. Garcia couldn’t buy a completion in the second half, it felt like he’s recievers (and RB’s out of the backfield) dropped every pass sent their way. If we can force Carolina to abandon the running game and rely on their passing I think we can get the win. Delhomme threw a couple of picks last night and I’ve never really though much of him.
ps check out Antiono Bryant’s TD catch in the 4th quarter, it is absurd.

At least a Tampa Bay loss means they have more to play for in their forthcoming matchup versus the Chargers. No matter what happens to the Broncos against the Panthers, I expect the Bucs to whip Charger butt and we can celebrate before the Bills game.

Stewart + Williams
They are a very scary tandem, Williams has finally become what he was expected to be coming out of Memphis and Stewart is exactly what he was expected to be. It will be a very tough test, if we cant find a stop then we will lose badly.
Go Broncos!

The Broncos have done well against three strong running teams in a row now.
Yes, they folded a little in the final quarter against Oakland, but that was more on the offense since the inability to hang onto the ball for a while caused the defense to wear down. But in the first half, they allowed just 2.9 YPC, and even in the third quarter it was 3.4.
Against the Jets, a major bulk of the yardage against them from the rush amounted to two plays: a 59-yarder and a 29-yarder, the latter where the defense simply relaxed because they thought the play was over. But you take away those two plays, and the entire rest of the game the Jets accomplished all of a 3.2 YPC.
The Chiefs, and their truly magnificent RB Larry Johnson, managed a team total of 83 yards against the Broncos. Of those yards, 34 were the result of Thigpen’s scrambling, with LJ getting all of 36, with a long of 11.
The defense might not still be the equivalent of the Baltimore Ravens’, but I believe the days of a weak run defense are behind the Broncos.
Nonetheless, my primary concern isn’t the Panthers’ running game, but the Broncos’ running game. If they can manage a decent enough one to implement Jay’s play-actions and bootlegs, then the Panthers have a surprise coming, IMO.

Good stuff Orangeblood
I’ll have more answers up for you in this week’s Chalk Talk, but to answer your question on who Pepper’s lines up against…
Peppers is a R-DE and lines up on the defense’s right. This places him across from LT Clady. As their best pass rusher (one of the best in the League), this is his best placement. He rushes the blind side of most QBs (right handers), but also hits the side that typicaly doesn’t have the TE.
It should be a wonderful match-up to watch for fans of the trenches. If I can see the game, I’ll be watching this part of the field the most.

In looking at the matchups during the season,
I don’t see where Clady has faced anyone quite the caliber of Peppers. He has no doubt faced some excellent pass rushers, but to me Peppers is the creme de la creme.

I agree Peppers is one of the best.
But Clady has faced 4-3s and 3-4s, and has faced not only some of the best RDEs in the League, but also some of the very best tandems of RDT/RDEs in the League too. And he has done it without double team support from LG.
I’m not going to say that Clady will be perfect this game. But I would go so far as to call Clady the creme de la creme of LTs in the League in only his first year. It will be a wonderful match-up to watch between two of the best at their positions.

Clady vs Peppers
Remember how in TC, Clady got beat by Doom once? But not twice. Same when the Cowboys were here. Clady is a fast learner. My Prediction? Peppers is goood enough to beat Clady once (but Cutler gets rid of the ball) and Clady wins against Peppers from then on.

Long story short...
we have three things to worry about:
1. turnovers
2. slowing the running game.
3. Steve Smith.
We come out on top of those 3 things and we win the game.
GO BRONCOS!!!

I think the key will be ball control
We don’t have a running game that will scare people, but we need those dink and dunk passes to make up for it, I think we can do fine on offense scoring, what I worry about is allowing the defense to stay on the field too long, if we control the ball and time or possession, and don’t have turnovers, we will win, but if Carolina can keep our defense on the field for long stretches and the offense goes into the all or nothing mode, long day ahead.

More worrying to me
is that the defense allows big plays and gets off the field too quickly while giving up scores! After watching the Stewart and Williams last night, I’m thinking it could be a long day for our run defense without being on the field all that much.
Of course, this would lead to a shootout where I like our chances, but it would be nice if we could just run up the score and not have to worry about what Carolina is doing on their side.

Ball control is key.
For teams to keep our offense from doing damage they need to keep Cutler and company on the sidelines. We need to do the same thing to the Panthers.
Seeing what we did against the Atlanta and Jets running game shows us that we can keep Williams and Stewert in check. The one thing we need to take advatage of is Delhome and his streak of INTs lately.

I watched the Panth-Buc game..........conclusion.........Carolina is good.
In order to win this game—we not only need to bring our A-game—we need to bring our, ‘slow-down-the-run-with-seven-in-the-box-game.’ We are not going to stop their run game—but we should be able to slow it down. If we give away a couple long free runs—like we did with The Jets—we might be in trouble.
I would feel a little comfortable if Hillis hadn’t been hurt………a lot more comfortable as a matter-of-fact…..but he’s gone so we got what we got. ((((As a side note—I also hope Champ is back—we need to shut down some of their passing game—and Champ can do that.!.)))
That being said, I also think we can win this game! Not because we are going to totally stop their offense—but because our offense can keep up with any team.
Get ready for another ‘nail-chewer’ , this is going to be another one of games that increase the sale of Rolaids.
Yet, I have a funny feelng………that this game is ours…………love these funny feelings!
