Broncos revive pursuit of Jets' Robertson

According to ESPN, the only thing stopping DT Dewayne Robertson from being a Bronco at this point is a financial agreement.

As the NFL meetings get going, the Broncos are starting to revive their interest in Jets defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson.

The Broncos were close to dealing for Robertson in mid-March but the talks were stalled when the team suddenly fired general manager Ted Sundquist on March 12. Sundquist was the point man in the talks with the Jets.

With Sundquist now out of the picture and with Denver still needing a force in the middle of its young front four, the team has reconsidered making a deal for Robertson, a talented player who doesn't fit in the Jets' scheme.

Still, finalizing a deal will be difficult for Denver. Robertson's contract will have to be restructured and the team has been in on-again, off-again talks with his agent, Hadley Engelhard, for several weeks. Robertson is due a $3 million bonus in June and he has salary-cap number of about $11 million for this season.

Denver would have to redo the deal to make it fiscally worthwhile, especially with the Broncos in a cost-conscience mode this offseason.

The Broncos are said not to be overly concerned about an Robertson's knee problem. The issue was serious enough, however, to negatively impact a potential trade early in March that would have sent Robertson to Cincinnati for two mid-round picks.

At this point, it seems, the only hurdle standing in the way of Denver making its biggest splash of the offseason is coming to an agreement with Robertson financially

As I recall
Robertson Failed the physical and thats why Denver didnt deal for him. Not because of Sundquist

No no no!
He's still going to command a hefty salary. I'd do it for something like $2-4MM a year, but he's probably going to be in the $8-10MM range still.

Ditto
Yes, I, too, thought DeWayne failed a physical exam in Denver.  If that is so, then what exactly does "fail physical" mean?  He sounds expensive.  I hope the Broncos don't add to the list of players no longer with the team who are receiving substantial ammounts of $$.  Could that be one of the reasons Sundquist was let go?

NO!
He is a selfish "ME" player.  All he wants is money money money...he hasn't earned his contract with the Jets and I sure as hell bet that he won't earn any contract with us.  Trash the deal, let him go flounder in free agency until he realizes he is only worth the league minimum.  garbage!! garbage garbage garbage!

Gotta disagree
I think he has earned his contract with the Jets.  In fact the problem is that he hit the escalators in his contract which is why his base salaries are so high the next two years (6.8 and 4.5 million).  Had he been complete garbage he would have been due 1.45 and 1.6 million instead.  I think his real value is somewhere in between.

I guess, to me, the thought of him
earning first round money is absurd.  He hasn't been worth first round money his entire career.  The proof of that is by the fact that hardly anyone around here had even heard of the guy before this season.

Zappa says what?
Has DRob's work ethic ever been called into question? What player doesn't want to get the best deal possible? Hell what person doesn't want to get paid?

DRob negotiation: I was a draft bust and am eternally grateful to any franchise that signs me for veteran's minimum. :)

Seriously, it's called negotiation and it's to be expected. IMO, the delay in signing is more of a sign that we're holding out for the best possible deal. If we can get him for a good deal (i.e., incentive laden) then I'm all for it. Bringing him doesn't change the fact that we should still target our draft picks toward young stud DTs.

Exactly
From everything I've read about this guy, he's the kind of person you want in your locker room. So, from a character standpoint, there are no issues to me.

As far as money, you nailed it. Obviously, Denver wants this guy, but they won't break the bank for him. Esp with the knee questions.

And, I'm with you 100% in that if they DO end up with him, I hope it doesn't change their focus on DT's on draft day. Hopefully, they learned their lesson with Kennedy, et al last year. Their approach to Robertson should be as a rotational player, not the solution.

Or so I'm told.

I think
If it is a question of his talent, then theres no question the guy is talented. My only concern is will he have a Gerrard Warren type attitude, or will he want to show the team he can play regardless. His physical is a big question to me. If Greek and Co. do not label him physically fit than I would not want him. I do not believe his ethic has been called into question but if the Jets want to trade him, there has to be a reason and it may be a locker room reason.

Hard to say..
I'm not part of the DRob fan club, but when I was trying to investigate these very questions I never read anything on him being lazy or a locker-room cancer. If anything, he simply failed to live up to his draft position. Their fans readily admit he was a good DT who just didn't WOW them nor justify his large contract. I think all of us are gun-shy because of our recent FA history with DE/DT. Here's to hoping he's got more Keith Traylor in him than G. Warren. :)

I wish there was a way for us fans to get access to game tape. Then we could skim through each game and see what kind of player he was/is.

Dewayne Robertson
I don't think that the Jets are going to keep Robertson on their roster come June 1st.  He is due a $3mm roster bonus. He is 6' 1" and 317 lbs and they feel that is too small for a 3-4 nose tackle. The teams that have shown interest are Cincy, Denver, and Carolina. The other two are no longer talking, probably due to concerns about his knee. Let's wait until the Jets cut him in June and offer him an incentive-laden deal.

There is a lot of logic to that
However, if Denver can work out a contract with DRob it might be worth a 5th or 6th round pick to get everything locked up before the draft.

I also just noticed who wrote the ESPN piece.  Just hastening the downfall of the Worldwide Leader.

Relative value
After I look at the draft values posted by styg50 I agree. It looks like a sixth round pick is worth a tank full of gas for the team bus. If he will agree to restructure the contract it would save parading all over the country visiting other teams.

Did you note that one of the comments on that ESPN site questioned why the Broncos never draft a D Lineman? The poster stated Denver always waits to pick up someone else's rejects. Hmm ?

Ugh, great catch, MattR.
Always consider the source. :)

Isn't it fun to watch us all go stir-crazy as we eagerly anticipate the draft later this month? I've already got a draft party setup for the show! Any Broncos fan within spitting distance of York, PA is welcome.
